the chubby first douche in the prankster video is the nitwit who got shot for being an asshole in Loudoun County.
The guy who shot him got off on the minimum (had to get him for discharging a firearm indoors, but a great deal of local sentiment (of the non-AWFL type) was "good for the guy who shot him". (shooter was some guy doing food delivery, and the kid getting in his face kept shoving his phone up playing a recording of something like "you smell". Guy backed up and told him to leave him alone several times, tried to leave, and then shot him when he kept coming on. Rich daddy tried to defend prankdouche as someone who just brings people joy with his videos. He has a whole channel on youtube doing some really stupid and often illegal things) Posted by: barbarausa at February 06, 2026 07:22 PM (enw9G) 14

I made an observation during an errand. There's a very good local income tax service that shares the office or maybe is in partnership with a used car dealer. The dealer keeps a fair inventory throughout the year and seems to specialize in under $10K. Tax refund season is coming up and he is really stocked up, maybe three times his usual inventory. Anticipation/prediction of healthy refunds under the Big Beautiful Bill?

(Home of trans rape in school bathrooms, and the latest brouhaha is that the day a school employee ran over a student last month--who died--the school board held a closed session with hired actors to simulate crazed parents attacking the board meeting, for "training purposes". One of the "crazed parents" was a character named "Mr. Smith" in the simulation, which happens to be the name of the father of the girl raped, who was arrested by the Soros county atty when he went to a board meeting to complain about the coverup, when the trans kid tried to rape another girl when they just transferred him between schools)

I was reading in one of my sci fi novels about the LESS, or Lunar Escape System, a method of emergency escape should the lunar module malfunction. It was to be attached underneath the module like a spare. It ultimately wasn't used.
The thing looks like a two-seater lawn chair! https://tinyurl.com/2zvb4jdw That would be a wild ride back to the command module. Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes. at February 06, 2026 09:06 PM (kpS4V) 194
Japan is giving the US 250 Cherry Blossom trees for our 250th birthday. Nice gesture but now we have to get them a present.
The US should ship them a Godzilla statue the size of the Statue of Liberty complete with large genitals with a poem at the base to anyone who wants to immigrate to Japan that says: Keep your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses who smell, The wretched refuse of your teeming shores. Send them, the homeless, tempest-tost to hell, I lift my tail and fart in your direction as well! Posted by: Godzilla at February 06, 2026 09:07 PM (92bIn) 195

The Coliseum was built in 72AD. I would bet anything built in the last 200 years will last last that long.
Posted by: Ben Had at February 06, 2026 09:05 PM (0KSrI) We remember the bad emperors but Emperor Vespasian (69-79 A.D.), of the Flavian family, deserves his historical credit: The Flavian Amphitheater. Was surprised to find out RoboCop went back and got a PH.D in Italian Renaissance Art History in 2014. Along the way, while getting his Masters, he taught Ancient History at Syracuse University. Saw him on a history tv show explaining the hypogeum while standing in it. Thought that kind of cool and good for Prof. Weller. Posted by: RickZ at February 06, 2026 09:15 PM (gKDq2) 199

When I was stationed over there on some tour we heard the tale about a castle that had a very old sealed trunk with the inscription “Only to be opened when the castle is in great danger”.

——- What’s that big dome in Rome? It’s made of concrete, one of the largest single castings ever, something like that. Romans knew their concrete. For bridges, and things like that, they required the architect to stand underneath while the final piece of stone was installed. Will it collapse, or not? Quality control was built in, over-engineered that way. Posted by: Common Tater at February 06, 2026 09:23 PM (65afW) 203

I was amazed to learn that during some repair work, engineers found that the concrete was full of small sealed ceramic bottles, creating many small sealed void spaces. This did not significantly weaken the structure, but it did cut the weight of the dome in half from what you’d calculate by just looking at the specs. A big reason it’s still up after 2000 years. Tonypete, didn't know such things were at Oak Ridge. Some day will have to make that part of my nation-wide nukyler tour.
Friend was hosted by Japanese foreign ministry to give trade policy lectures in Japan in the 90s. When he emerged from the Hiroshima "peace museum" with his foreign ministry guide, the guide asked him what he thought of the museum. "I guess you'll never attack us again". Guide smiled weakly and they moved on. Best answer I've ever heard. My official statement leaving the museum when I was there was "not as bad as I expected". "Colie had been acquitted in September of aggravated malicious wounding in the shooting of Tanner Cook, 21, who runs the "Classified Goons" YouTube channel.. The jury was split though on two lesser firearms counts. They decided to convict him on the charge of discharging a firearm within a building and acquit him on the charge of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Colie pleaded not guilty to all the charges and said he was acting in self-defense. .. Colie was sentenced to time served, and his concealed carry permit was to be revoked." Bullshit.. I would suggest that he was applying his 'concealed carry permit ' exactly as intended when he dispensed that pill.. Posted by: General Turgidson at February 06, 2026 09:34 PM (koFAO) 214

Thanks Tonypete. I had family at Los Alamos, sadly never got to talk to him much (I'm only one in entire family with an interest in the subject). Have been to the lab for work a few times in the past, but haven't been to the museum. That, and going to the Trinity site on one of the public access days are on the list. That's just NM of course.
There are all sorts of remaining WWII items around the San Diego area unsurprisingly, though some have in recent years finally been erased by current development (large coastal artillery bunker, I think, finally was removed for construction - at last - of a modern indoor shooting range/training facility for the SEALs on the Silver Strand south of Coronado). Thankfully the WWII "temporary" buildings on Pt. Loma (Fort Rosecrans) have been preserved and are still used). 152 133 In my rust belt home town in Ohio there are more than a few old time mansions, from the Gilded Age, that have been chopped up into apartments. Most have a turret or two. A friend rented an apartment after the wife kicked him out and it had access to one of the turrets. Very cool. Narrow stairway and then a 360 view. He got a real comfortable office swivel chair up there and it became his mostly drinkin' space.
Posted by: bill in arkansas New Castle, PA is full of those kind of homes. Most are in various states of dis-repair, sadly. Some have been preserved, mostly on the north side of town but even there, it's fading. Sad really. Posted by: Puddleglum at work at February 06, 2026 09:44 PM (byWhc) 218
