Beavers furnish a valuable substance, which is known by the name of castoreum. This substance is of a brownish oily consistence, has a disagreeable, narcotic smell, and a bitterish, acrid, and nauseous taste.
Castoreum has been long celebrated as a remedy in hysterical complaints; and has been frequently used with advantage in languid habits and constitutions. The fur of the beaver is much in request, in consequence of its having become a fashionable trimming for ladies' dresses, and a favourite article for muffs. a medieval burial in the Southern Altai may be linked to fairy tale
The Woman and the Bears: The bronze plaque was discovered in one of these graves, belonging to a woman estimated to have been between 35 and 50 years old at the time of her death. Although the burial had been disturbed in antiquity, most of the grave goods remained in place, suggesting a ritual intrusion rather than ordinary robbery. The plaque depicts three bear heads positioned vertically, each framed by forelegs folded beneath the body—a configuration archaeologists describe as a “sacrificial pose.” Similar bear plaques are well known from the taiga and forest zones of western Siberia, where bear symbolism formed the core of hunting cults and cosmological beliefs among Ugric and other northern peoples. Until now, however, such objects were virtually unknown this far south. Its presence here is therefore extraordinary—not only geographically, but culturally. It may be the final resting place of Goldilocks! Posted by: Kindltot at February 03, 2026 07:49 PM (rbvCR) 62

The Artemis II launch will be delated to at least the March launch window (windows occurs every month, roughly around full Moon). Just like Artemis I, this thing has heap big hydrogen leak problems at the tail service mast umbilical. There's a big 8" flexible hose that flows LH2 into the main tank at some high flow rate. It started leaking early in the test, but they got under control. At around T-5:30 minutes, when they started pressurizing the tank, it started leaking again big time, H2 levels increased in the space there, and they had to shut it down. Besides that, they had communication problems too, audio drops out, and some of the cameras were messing up too. They think the cold snap may have caused that. We occasionally get a "pet" beaver in our creek at the farm.
I like watching him work, and the pools he creates always concentrate the fish. Unfortunately, our creek has a huge watershed. When we get a big "frog strangler" rain, it always blows out his dam and lodge. I do not know if the flood kills him, or just washes him downstream a few miles. A year or two later, another young male shows up to start the cycle again. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at February 03, 2026 08:09 PM (HlyYF) 106

I was reading a long winded article last night detailing just what a boondoggle the SLS is. It's not even funny the stupid amount of money wasted with that thing. And to top it off, it can't even put Orion in lunar orbit. It's less powerful than the Saturn V by a good bit. That's why this mission is just a free-return whip around. The whole thing is an example of Congressional pork -- each congressman and senator wants a piece of the pie in their district and state. The current plan to get land on the Moon with Artemis III is a convoluted thing. Elon and SpaceX got the contract for a lander. And what is that lander going to be? Starship. Specifically Starship HLS (human landing system). Elon will launch that into LEO. Then it will be refueled by a Starship tanker, also launched to LEO, and filled up with propellant in orbit by a bunch of other Starships carrying fuel. It will take maybe 8 to 16 fuel launched to fill the depot up. Once filled, HLS will launch into LEO, then be refueled for the trip to the Moon. Orion will then launch via SLS, which will dock with HLS in a polar type halo orbit. Starship will then land on the Moon, for a several day stay. Starship then blasts off from the Moon, docks with Orion again, and brings the astronauts back home. Now, if Starship is going to do all that, why the hell do you need Orion? Starship could carry the astronauts to the Moon itself.... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 03, 2026 08:39 PM (w6EFb) 157
