Moose Encounters of the Third Kind Cafe

yorkshiredalesenglandfoundviavisualtherapy0.jpg
Yorkshire Dale, England
from @VisualTherapy0

Hand-raising an orphaned baby anteater so it can survive on its own and just be weirdly adorable.

Friendly skunk swarm.

Old but cute: Duck runs a race. (Well I think he just ran a hundred yards at the end but that's still very good for a duck.)

Natural pesticide: Thousands of ducks are released to eat all the insects out of a plot of farmland after the harvest.

This is turning into a very duck-heavy cafe.

Baby elephant tries to use his trunk.

Baby polar bear chases off a rude raven.

I'm a peacock, captain! You've gotta let me fly!

Sea lion gets territorial with a marine iguana. Tourists go home.

Helicopter mom lioness.

40 If you haven't been to Yorkshire, Ace, you need to go before the invaders ruin it. That's where my father's ancestors lived and had a sheep farm a couple of centuries ago. Apparently on a windy hill.

I had two duckies for Easter when I was about 3yrs old. There are photos of me with heart-shaped sunglasses and pig tails admiring them. I remember them being a bit stinky (this was in my grandmother's back yard). When they were grown my father took them to his lake where they did not survive. We guess due to foxes (who apparently never wanted the crazy rooster who chased us years later, but killed the hens).

I was at an Easter egg hunt once and there were baby chicks. One girl loved hers so much she killed it right there during the hunt.

I don't have good bird memories. We had a parakeet named Ricky (from Ricky Ricardo) who hated us, because we stuck our fingers in his cage as little kids and he pecked us.

The turkeys love it when I do early spring burns at the farm.

The subsequently exposed black top soil always warms up much faster than the adjacent ground that has 3' of prairie grass insulation on it.

The bugs hatch much earlier in the warm ground and I have seen lines of turkeys marching across to sweep up the bugs.

It almost looks like a military operation. I think they deliberately drive the bugs in front of them.

Once the kinks were resolved, the Mk. 14 was *the* torpedo in submarines up until the mid-70's or so, because it was the only combat-proven torpedo in the inventory.

The Navy wanted more, and put the blueprints out for bid. The lowest bid was $2mil+/copy. The Navy declined.

100 Yes, but they had so many problems with them, they had difficulty determining what to do.

Consider too, once you actually fire torpedos, the gig is up. They know where you are, and the convoy escorts and such are not happy with you, and start dropping depth charges, widely considered unpleasant.

They just got done sailing 6000 miles, burning thousands of gallons of diesel, getting lined up to take a shot, and the fuckers are duds, or might even circle around and blow yer ass up. And it took a lot of persuasion to get the brass to admit the torpedos were defective.

108 97 Delurker, I got to counting how long physical interactions last because of the John Wick movies.

The best advice I've ever heard about street fights is, most guys, especially drunks, will completely wear themselves out within a minute. Just dodge and weave and let them punch away till they're exhausted, it won't take long, and then you can take almost anyone. How big they are doesn't even matter. Many people know how to throw a proper punch or kick. Very few can keep it up for long.

Boxing workouts kick your butt for a reason!

The torp problem was huge and they hated the bureaucratic bullshit they got from the Navy about them. Bad shots, poor commanders, poor training. He said more than once they could hear the thing hit the ships, but no explosion.
They worked the exploder problem hard at Pearl. He was awarded for devising a way to retrieve test shots so they weren't wasted, or lost.

175 ScaryMary, we've found this very effective:

Texas A&M-Recommended Orange Oil and Dish Soap Ant Killer

The most effective organic method for killing fire ants, validated by Texas A&M University research, uses 1.5 ounces of orange oil (such as Medina Orange Oil) and 3 ounces of Dawn dish soap mixed into 1 gallon of water. This solution is applied as a mound drench during early morning or late afternoon when ants are most active inside their nests.

How it works: The d-limonene in orange oil breaks down the ants' exoskeletons, causing suffocation. The dish soap helps the solution penetrate the mound and stick to the ants.

Application: Pour the mixture directly onto the fire ant mound. The treatment typically kills about 90% of ants on the first application.

Follow-up: Repeat the treatment once a week for three total applications to eliminate nearly all ants (99.99% effectiveness). This is because surviving ants may be deep in the nest, and multiple applications ensure the queen and colony are eradicated.

Source: This method is based on controlled studies by Texas A&M University entomologists and is also referenced in publications like Mother Earth News and The Dirt Doctor.

Same brand had food grade and pest control. Common question was "what is the difference". Brand supplier basically said exact same product on the bag. Usage instructions depend on application.
I think at the time "food grade" was like 1/4 the price. Price / pound goes down fast with larger packages too. Got about a 15 lb bag that may last for years.

Remember that in her previous outing, Commie Lay had to withdraw from *her own party's primary* without winning a single delegate. Her own party.

Then they tried to fix that by just not bothering to have a primary the next time. It turned out that didn't actually solve the problem. Heh.

Vogue just did a feature on him and it's to barf -- for any normal person. Which means it's scary. This is how he's going to be served up. The article is titled "Gavin Newsom Is Setting His Own Rules."

>>Let’s get this out of the way: He is embarrassingly handsome, his hair seasoned with silver, at ease with his own eminence as he delivers his final State of the State address. “In Washington, the president believes that might makes right,” pronounces California governor Gavin Newsom. “Secret police, businesses raided, windows smashed, citizens detained, citizens shot, masked men snatching people in broad daylight….” His tone is temperate, but the words echo through the State Capitol’s Assembly chamber, the august backdrop for his speech. “Lining the pockets of the rich; crony capitalism at an unimaginable scale,” he goes on. “Rolling back rights…. Rewriting history.” Newsom shakes his head, seeming more mournful than angry. Seeming, yes, presidential. “None of this is normal.”

It must drive Trump nuts....

What I resent most about California politicians is this: for a very long time the thing everyone said about California was “I’d love to live there, if I could afford it.” People who wanted to live there said it, and for people who left there it was often their only complaint. Now there are tens of millions of people who would never ever live there even when they can afford it, me and my family included. I no longer envy Californians. I hate them despise them spit upon them for utterly wrecking paradise.

And that is Gavin NewScum’s problem: he and his ilk have utterly ruined one of the most beautiful places on earth.

In a scathing opinion, Judge Reyes says DHS Secretary Kristi Noem doesn’t have the law or facts on her side, and writes that it is “substantially likely” that Noem has “hostility toward nonwhite immigrants.”

Judge Reyes writes that the plaintiffs who sued DHS aren’t “killers, leeches, or entitlement junkies,” and says that they are a neuroscientist, a lab assistant, a nurse, and an economics major who were all facing deportation.

236 229 I went to summer camp on Kenai Lake. One of the girls, apparently not used to living in the woods, came screaming into the cabin yelling about the Horney Varmint in the outhouse. Um...

Please tell me it was not a snake. I would simply die right there.

I had a phobia in FL of a python coming up the toilet, especially while using it. But anytime I thought of it was horrific. I even instructed my husband to explain in the obit why I had a sudden cardiac arrest.

240 201 One fucking rocket. The build one fucking rocket.
And it leaks.

They use the boil off to both pressurize the tanks and make sure the tanks don't rupture under pressure.
This is SOP since the von Braun brothers and Willie Ley were launching two-stick Repulsors in Berlin

Posted by: Kindltot at February 02, 2026 09:20 PM (rbvCR)

The H2 boiloff is vented down a duct away from the rocket to avoid flammable concentration near the rocket. If the seal between the boil-off exhaust port on the rocket and the ground-side duct (it disconnects and pulls away at lift-off) isn't good enough, a flammable concentration of H2 can build-up where you do not want it. The same issue occurred occasionally with the Shuttle External Tank H2 boiloff connection. H2 is damned difficult to contain at a flexible interface (the ground-side connection plate has to have some 'flex' to accommodate small rocket motion relative to the launch umbilical tower.)

Don't ask how I know, I'm trying to forget. I wasn't responsible for the design of that Shuttle interface but was on a troubleshooting team.

241 234 I would be afeared to pet a moose or any wild animal. I have decided I want a pet raven like the one in Dickens novel "Barnaby Rudge," whose conversation largely consists of saying "I'm a devil! I'm a devil! Bow wow, wow!" On second thought, it might get a little tiresome after a while and I am sure my dog would not approve.

Ravens are little assholes. They get into everything and spread it all around. I have watched three of them open the lid on a dumpster and just run amok. They are too smart to be boring, but man, do they make a mess.

They like to sit on the edge of the roof at Freddies in Fairbanks and knock snow down on people walking by. Honestly, I need that when I'm after groceries?

And if they are really bored, they just yak at everything, endlessly.

But they are kinda pretty, in a very primitive way.

243 For the record, I think Newscum looks like a greasy used car salesman. And the left's other heartthrob, murderer Mangione, looks like a friggin' caveman.

246 “it is ‘substantially likely’ that Noem has “hostility toward nonwhite immigrants.”

And what if she does? The Constitution doesn’t have a g.d. thing to say against us banning immigrants because we don’t like them.

The very first naturalization law passed by Congress limited citizenship to “free whites.” In 1882 - after all the post-Civil War amendments - Congress passed a ban on Chinese immigration that lasted for 60 years.

In 1880 the American West had 2 million people. China had 400 million. It is very quite likely that the entire western half of North America - or maybe all of it - would be speaking Mandarin right now if it weren’t for the Chinese Exclusion Act.
