With good reason, it's a feature of many. But like most flavor notes, it usually eludes me. Finally I came across a stick where the cedar is clear and predominant. The La Palina Red Label is a nice looking medium brown cigar with an Ecuadorean sun grown wrapper around Nicaragua and Dominican fillers. Draw on these toros I smoked was perfect. Body was definitely medium, very smooth. Lots of smoke, burn line didn't require constant management. Cedar predominated throughout for me. Many reviewers find nuttiness and spice as well - I'd say subtle elements of those probably added to the overall flavor at various points. A nice thing about the Red Label is the cost. Definitely a good value proposition, with this quality. These toros can be found online for $4.50 and up, just above a bundle style price but well below most cigar prices these days, which seem finally to have jumped a bit after holding fairly steady through our recent, ruinous Inflation-o-rama.Excellent, rhomboid! Ok, no range report.
I received the new rings that were suggested by Farrell along with the base they said would fit on my rifle. So since my car is still plowed in a week after the storm I went to install everything to mount the scope to find..........it does not work. The scope still cannot be mounted as the objective bell hits the top of the rifle before it can be seated in the rings. And the base cannot be attached to my rifle. So I am glad I purchased back up rings that were made by NightForce. With those I was able to mount the scope. I will take some pics and send them into Weasel so you can see the finished product. I am still waiting to get the magazines from the gun store. The mags that came with the rifle hold 10 rounds. NYC has set a limit of only 5 rounds for a rifle, even a bolt action. So I have to wait for the magazines to be pinned to only hold 5 rounds. Of course, once the snow clears and the weather improves I will take the rifle to the range to zero the scope. Can't wait to take it up to NH to see how well it shoots. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at February 01, 2026 07:09 PM (ldgW6) 14

New design for safe revolver dry firing. Safesnap is a plastic disk that goes between the back of the cylinder and the cylinder shroud at the back of the revolver. Designed for dry firing without having to have snap caps. (Those are still useful for practicing reloads) which the Safesnap is only designed for dry firing protection of the firing pin. Cheap enough.

Posted by: Pete Bog ====== Specialty cartridge prices are always high which is why, in part, we have so many of them. Better margin for the ammo makers and a new cartridge always creates some demand for a new rifle to shoot it in. That dynamic is why I quit subscribing to gun mags as I got tired of the emphasis on new cartridges and firearms and much less on training and fundamentals (and reloading). You're talking about me, aren't you?
Posted by: .30 Super Carry ====== Good example. The other is a 327 Magnum. A downloaded 9mm has about the same recoil as a 30 Super Carry, and the 327 Magnum has most of the recoil and noise of a 357 without the cheaper ammo (and easy to load 357 down as well). If there was a lever action widely available for 327 Magnum, that would be a useful replacement for the old 32-40 rifle rounds. And the 327 should do fine in longer barrels for hunting. Yet, most of the revolvers sold in 327 magnum were short barrels which wastes much of the goodness of a magnum in the first place. Posted by: whig at February 01, 2026 07:42 PM (2swu2) 49

Posted by: Ed L ====== I resolutely avoided the 300 Blackout as it is a good short range cartridge. Sort of like an upgraded 30 Carbine with a better bullet and AR frame. But I already have the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel in uppers. And most importantly, I reloaded for pretty large number of cartridges and you start to worry about some cartridges like the 300 Blackout being able to be chambered in a 5.56 and doing a rapid disassembly. So, I buy only cartridges that cannot unsafely be chambered in a rifle chambered for another cartridge. If you dig around on the internets, there is actually a list floating around of beware these particular cartridges and chambers. The classic example is the 38 Super and the 38 ACP. Ruger has a Mini-14 with a folding stock in 300 BO. Seems like that would be a good candidate for a double-stamp build. Shorten it to 10 or 11 inches and add a supressor. You might have to monkey with the gas system a bit. Posted by: Oddbob at February 01, 2026 07:58 PM (Fs0KI) 68
Only cold shooting I have done was when I took a day off winter sports in the Sierras and shot my Mosins at the very nice Washoe County range north of Reno. Steel gongs. Snow covered hills, cold ((RSO has heated booth! from which be rules the range). Mosins fell at home, though the gongs were a lame substitute for kraut invaders.

Posted by: Oddbob IMHO, the main reasons to get a 300 BO are if you want to fire suppressed using subsonic ammo for maximum quietness and/or you want a very short barrel as the 300 BO can function with as little as 8 or so inch barrels. The 6.5 Grendel, 5.56, 7.62x39, or the 6.8 SPC require a little longer barrels for good function and minimum blast. Posted by: whig at February 01, 2026 08:02 PM (2swu2) 71

Posted by: whig at February 01, 2026 07:51 PM (2swu2) I picked up .300 Blackout because I had an opportunity to pick up a B&T SPR 300 Pro, an integrally suppressed bolt action rifle for use out to about 200 meters max. The DMV MGC members who've had some trigger time on the rifle will say that B&T isn't kidding when they say it's one of the quietest suppressed centerfire rifles available. But all that doesn't change the fact that caliber creep was one of the downsides of that purchase. Posted by: Ed L at February 01, 2026 08:06 PM (BCwQW) 76

Several years ago, Federal give us the 9mm Federal, basically a rimmed 9mm Luger. Purpose was to give 9mm ballistics in a revolver, without having to fiddle with moon clips or bizarre extractor systems. Then somebody realized this high pressure round would easily fit into antique .38 top break revolvers. When the .30 Super Carry was announced, the first thing I checked was would it fit into 7.65 French Long autoloaders. I think it is just a little too fat to chamber. When S&W introduced .357 Magnum in 1935, they lengthened the case by 0.1 inch to prevent it from going into revolvers chambered for .38 Special. But they forgot about the still fairly numerous Colt New Army revolvers chambered in .38 Long Colt. The straight wall cylinder chambers in the Colt New Army revolver have no problem chambering .357 Magnum. I've tested this myself on a Colt New Army (using snap caps, obviously). Modern loadings would almost certainly blow up the Colt New Army in your face if you tried it with live .357 Magnums. Posted by: Ed L at February 01, 2026 08:15 PM (BCwQW) 87

Opinions are like... well you know. But since you asked... Rules of Gunfighting: Rule #1: Bring a gun. Check. Rule #2: Bring enough gun. IMO, no check. It's a small step up to a .380 (still marginal IMO but OK with careful ammo selection) and another small step to a sub-compact 9. My EDC for years was a Colt Mustang with Corbons. Now it's a Sig P290 with Hornadys. Posted by: Oddbob at February 01, 2026 08:18 PM (Fs0KI) 91

Posted by: Heavy Meta ==== Better options out there unless you want to fire suppressed, then get one with a threaded barrel. The PPK/s works well with a suppressor as it is a fixed barrel. CDNN Sports has new ones including those with threaded barrels on sale. But, the double action is a VERY heavy trigger, the sights aren't great, and it is a very old design. Had one in 380 and it was accurate at 7 yards. But better in a 32 ACP. If you want a historical pistol, try locating the slightly bigger Walther PP in 32 ACP or the VZ 70 from the Czechoslovakia of the Cold War era. And if you want a very small hidey hole 32 ACP. Keltec makes one that is probably one of the better designs in that cartridge and certainly one of the most modern. Runs a little over 200 bucks new and all Keltecs do pretty well on reliability and functionality. Just not looks.

Posted by: Heavy Meta at February 01, 2026 08:12 PM (GTqXr) Get it NOW. Do not wait any longer! Walther ended production of all PP and PPK variants at the end of last year in order to retool their factory. .32 ACP is perfect for the PPK. It's got mild recoil, easy to control, and unlike .380 ACP versions, it doesn't beat up your hands when you shoot it. It's easily managed one handed. For a couple hundred more, you can get one of "SD" variants that come with a factory threaded barrel in 1/2 by 28. I have both the threaded and unthreaded versions. The unthreaded version is easier to use, but mount the threaded version with a suppressor and you'll get the cool, iconic "007 Special" in looks. Suppressed, the PPK is a ton of fun to shoot as a range toy. Posted by: Ed L at February 01, 2026 08:22 PM (BCwQW) 96
Scuba-Dude muzzleloaders are addictive. You can get a decent shooter pretty reasonably. IIRC you’re in a gun unfriendly location - other places you can mail order them. If you have the time and inclination, there are decent kits available.
You will get gear and accessories creep though. I went with a Hawken replica in .54. Lots of fun to shoot and quite accurate. Posted by: Coelacanth at February 01, 2026 08:23 PM (vt7xw) 97

These are the various PPs and PPK/s sold new at CDNN Sports right now. Several models already have threaded barrels ready for a suppressor.
https://tinyurl.com/CDNN-Sports-Walther-Sale The PP is a slightly larger pistol than the PPK/s and the PPK/s is larger than the older PPK. They put a PP grip shank on a PPK slide and frame to make it pass the GCA of 1968 (the one that banned Saturday Night Specials from being imported). Smith and Wesson may have made some PPKs in the US but I am not sure about that. PP has a longer barrel and longer grip than the PPK and only the longer barrel and slide compared to the PPK/s. Posted by: Rev. Wishbone at February 01, 2026 08:38 PM (oT7pT) I hate to throw cold water on this, but 1) this is violation of the 1934 NFA in that you are making a suppressor w/o registering it w/ BATFE. Ten years at Leavenworth isn't something I'd dismiss lightly. 2) Despite what you see in the movies, this might not work w/ pistols that use the Browning tilting barrel mechanism (1911, High Power, Glocks, most SIGs, etc.). These pistols need a Nielson device in order to function. See the video from the United Health Care CEO getting assassinated for this in action. 3) If you're using a semi-auto pistol, the movement of the slide will still make audible noise. You'd need a locking device on your slide (a la the S&W Mk-22 "Hush Puppy" used by SEAL teams) to keep the slide in place or something like the WWII Welrod, which is a bolt action pistol. I noted that in the Hickok45 video, he immediately has trouble seating a fully loaded AR magazine into the rifle with a closed bolt. The full stack of cartridges plus the compressed magazine spring doesn't have enough "give" when pressed against the bottom of the bolt. Not a problem if you are on a range where the empty gun sits on the bench with the bolt open until you are given the command to lock and load. A possible problem if that is not the situation you find yourself in.

I prefer 20 round mags which were actually the original design as I have never had an issue with them. Have a lot of 30s but easier to move around with a 20 or fire from a benchrest.
Use 10 round mags on the AR-10 for the same reason if firing from a benchrest. Same with self defense topics like whether or not you should stay silent, etc. But people directly advocating what could be construed as illegal actions here often get banned, sometimes temporary or sometimes permanent by management. We have a fair number of law enforcement people here, retired or otherwise, there are certainly alphabet agencies that watch for certain key words, and the ATF in particular gets twitches when NFA violations are discussed. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ------ Yes, you can tinker with buffer weights to tune one in but that is sometimes a pain, sometimes not. A day at the range basically. But the bolt works in recoil impulse and a 115 gr standard pressure has a different recoil impulse than 124 gr. Nato. Not a gas issue but the whole bolt, feed, and recoil from teh buffer as a system issue. You can run into the same problems with semi autos as teh slide, recoil spring, barrel weight, etc. are all designed as a unit. There is some leeway but most just feed a weapon what it likes rather than trying to tweak them as some of those tweaks can degrade accuracy. Rugers P series, are an example of a firearm that feeds damn near anything but is minute of man accuracy due to tolerances baked into the cake for reliability. As long as each get what they want, they are happy and the rest of the voters can safely be ignored. Posted by: whig at February 01, 2026 09:54 PM (2swu2) 200
197 Greetings from Houston. I'm very late but I did go to the range today. First time since the MoMe, where I had a dismal showing on the range. Today was pretty good. Tried to make every shot count and slow down my trigger pull. Cow Demon had a great outing.

But don't discount the lazy state GOPs that run dismal campaigns consisting of mailers, tv and radio ads, and those awful robocalls.

SID!
Good for you! Get out there. Pull the trigger. Do your best to focus and fight the flinch. Please don’t be so hard on yourself. I have confidence in you. I’ve stood next to you while you shoot. I am confidant you would prevail in a situation. Posted by: nurse ratched at February 01, 2026 09:59 PM (IhIKR) 205

Don’t forget robo texts.
Somehow, during the time he was at UT, the TX Democrat party got my phone number with my son's name. I still get spam texts every election cycle. Usually I just ignore them but sometimes I f*ck with them. Posted by: Oddbob at February 01, 2026 10:01 PM (Fs0KI) 207
142 WTF is wrong with TX?
Losing seats in districts Trump Won by double digits? Do better. Posted by: nurse ratched at February 01, 2026 09:04 PM (IhIKR) We have our share of RINOs and Leftist Republicans. I have one representing me in the TX HR and I can’t wait to vote for his opponent. Posted by: Cow Demon at February 01, 2026 10:04 PM (PlzrS) 208
Guns.
Am late. Did go shooting, did some G17 shooting and didn't do super great. Shooting low left and we all know what that means....practice more. Get that trigger break dialed in. Also did some shooting with my .223 Henry single shot. It was fun, not tactical at all but it was good fun.
