The Climate Question -The Climate Question Topline: Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander claims one of the city’s health insurance funds has “no path to solvency” after labor unions used it to cover pay raises, Weight Watchers and more. Key facts: New York’s taxpayer-funded Health Insurance Stabilization Fund owes $3.1 billion to outside vendors and the city that it’s unable to pay. The actual amount is likely much higher because expenses from 2024 and 2025 have not been totaled yet, according to Lander’s Dec. 30 audit. The fund was created in 1985 to help employees afford the city’s Group Health Insurance (GHI) plan, a more costly alternative to the older Health Insurance Plan (HIP). I think it was an organized nurse day of mourning the hero who either was working or wasn't (rumors are around) in MN. Regardless, he spit rudely & kicked a car& then broke a rib being a jackass. Oddly, in the article, I saw a weird "group" of old school (which I am apparently, but without the cape) nurses in white uniforms and blue capes. I thought wth is this? Looked them up and they do funerals for nurses, like the Marines. I am unsure if they sing, as I was not that interested. To belong to the wackos, you pay a small one time fee, provide your own white uniforms and white hose, and sew your cape from a Simplicity pattern. Which would automatically put me at odds because I ain't sewing that and going to funerals. I just thought y'all needed to know this. This trend will probably not spread. How much of the airframe, and the plane components, what is original to these B-52?
The airframe is the original with repairs and updates as required over the decades. We only have B-52H models now, built between 1960 and 1963 (essentially); the engines are TF-33s just as delivered. The aircraft should get new engines in the next few years. The avionics are almost all later, better systems and the wiring is almost all changed during modifications. The basic design is nearly a WW2 fuselage with swept wings to allow slightly faster speeds. These things aren't fast! If the AF wants to fly them another 40 years it could be done. My late brother would haul me to concerts often & I am grateful. He had great taste in music, and long lasting memories. That LH2 leak was apparently fixed. Liquid hydrogen, at -423F is tricky, dangerous stuff. Tiny little molecules that leak through just about anything. I was just reading. A leaking LH2 valve on the S-IVB (3rd stage) replenish circuit nearly scrubbed the Apollo 11 launch. It started leaking just as Neil Armstrong and the others were headed to the pad to get onboard. They set a "Red team" (these are the hydrogen boys) out to tighten some bonnet bolts. That didn't work and it kept leaking. So, they ended up improvising. They poured water on the valve to heat it up (and said water froze instantly, but warmed up the valve), blocking it completely, and then manually feathered the main fill valve to replenish it, allowing the launch to go forward. That was tricky with the main fill valve, because it's normal flow rate was 1200 GPM. Replenish flow is only about 100 GPM. it seems like the B-52 shouldn't need eight engines this time.
The AF went through a couple of earlier new engine exercises years ago. The problem with adding larger fan engines is ground clearance. The secondary problem, even now, is the basic airspeed limitation of the aircraft. New engines will provide greater reliability (the TF-33 is ancient) and much greater fuel efficiency. So you get 8 whether you want 'em or not!! Posted by: LRob in OK at February 02, 2026 11:11 PM (47diA) 171

Had an unexpected blessing today. Short version. We've had some significant cash outflows over the last year. This weekend, Mrs. Sock and I were reviewing our budget. During that discussion Mrs. Sock pulled out her retirement folder. There was a letter from the state retirement system that I had received two years ago that said I had funds in the retirement system. I had never called because I knew I had pulled out all of my 403b funds in 2021. My wife asked me to check. I was right, I had taken all of the funds, but, but...
Normally, in the state system you have work ten years to qualify for a pension. I knew that. There was one exception. If you were 44 or older during your employment and you worked at least one year past the 5 year vesting schedule, in other words 6 years, you qualified for a monthly pension. I worked 6 years and 1 day. So now I've got an extra $128/month and I'm going to receive a retroactive check for the 24 months from when I turned 65. God is good and my wife gets alot of credit too. My Scoutmaster always said he never went hungry when RickZ's patrol was around. We just didn't do weinies on a stick. For the time, we ate well, spaghetti with meat sauce, e.g.. Supplemented with some surplus C-Rats. Our little campsite we used, now a subdivision in northeastern NC, had a little shooting range. In the summer, we swam in the blackwater small river onto which our campsite abutted; just had to throw rocks/sticks in the water first to scare away the cottonmouths. Never went across the 15 yard wide (?) river as it was salt marsh for another good 15 plus yards with no visible shore. Not so nice critters in that. I did Cub Scouts and then about a year of Boy Scouts. I was the only one of my friends that went on to Boy Scouts. Their absence and the implosion of my home life during that timeframe more or less prompted me to stop participating.
I doubt BSA can make a real comeback. The society that produced it doesn't exist anymore. The involvement of gays and girls, the way in which independence and self-reliance have been chipped away at for young adults (a term that isn't really even used much anymore with respect to older teens apart from referring to things like YA fiction). We did things as Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts that would send modern helicopter parents into a spin. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at February 03, 2026 12:13 AM (4/BuS) 245

WRT ice melt, some years ago I read a Scandi alternative to salt. Tried it and it worked so well I never went back to salt. Mini pine bark nuggets! They provide good traction. Whenever the ice thaws, they float to the top and continue to work during subsequent freeze/thaw cycles. Come springtime, just sweep them aside and they eventually get chopped up by the mower and /or decompose. Not a huge enviro-weenie, but when a common-sense alternative shows up, I tend tend to latch onto it. Posted by: EyeTest at February 03, 2026 12:33 AM (Z7In9) 258

He sincerely believed that “America’s incorporation of all adjacent lands was the virtually inevitable fulfillment of a moral mission delegated to the nation by Providence itself.” In 1902, as president, Roosevelt threatened to fire on German warships when they blockaded Venezuela after a debt default. In 1903 he fomented a secessionist revolt against the Colombian government to give America control of Panama.
