Road in Utah's west desert
Preston Photography

Dolphin and dog hang out.

Now seals are out of control.

Fat cat has only one kind of exercise he likes.

Frozen puppy saved from the side of the road is now the handsomest boy.

Sliding into Friday like Kramer bursting in through Jerry's door.

Pandas in a furpile.

Dog and baby share a joint appreciation of getting dirty.

ICYMI: Dog invades a cat's intimate spaces.

Cat lady, meet dog lady.

Learning by imitating, 1. Learning by imitating, 2.

5 Willowed: On another topic, you have to be watching China's current events with bemusement. Competence versus demanding absolute loyalty to Xi makes a helluva mess of armed forces when they are supposed to be reading in a year to invade Taiwan.

I held forth on Tuesday night at great length. I'm following closely, and I agree that gutting the CMC is a crazy move if Taiwan is still something they want to do. The point of the CMC is to provide a single command node but under divided control. Now Xi has to personally direct all movements.

It's stupid, inefficient, and it makes the other generals nervous.

I did see that Taiwan is now doing large-scale anti-invasion drills with US advisors helping them use new equipment like HIMARS. They're looking at a phased invasion and are registering their rocket artillery (so to speak) on stepping stone islands China could use as staging areas.

A bunch of drones are bad enough for surface warfare like in Ukraine. I am not sure that ship tactics have advanced enough especially crowded and slow invasion ships to prevent truly horrendous losses at sea and on beach heads.

Apparently the Chicoms also don't have much quality control on their warships either and that can be a major issue in a fight. Exocets came as a nasty surprise to the Royal Navy during the Falklands and drones promise to be at least that bad in terms of sinking ships.

NASA is planning to start the wet dress rehearsal test for the Artemis II rocket tonight around 11PM EST or so. This will take about 48+ hours, and is full wet run of the countdown to a little before T - 0. They're going to load up the thing with the LH2 and LOX and all that and go through all the motions. And see what problems pop up. No astronauts on board.

They're starting a bit earlier because of that cold blast that will hit Feb 1. It's forecast to get to maybe 26F at the Cape. By starting earlier, they'll keep it within the temp minimums for tanking.

"The deal (with PDT) reflects what senators in both parties had floated just a day earlier: passing a short-term funding bill for DHS, while the two parties negotiate changes to the department and ICE, which it oversees, along with bills to fund the rest of the government through Sept. 30.

The final outstanding issue in the negotiations was how long the stopgap bill, known as a continuing resolution or CR, would fund DHS. The two sides agreed to a two-week CR that would keep DHS running through Feb. 13, just before both chambers depart for a weeklong recess, the sources told NBC News."

I said , "That's cool, that's why I asked. No problem at all." She then said in a hushed tone "But I will give you a 2nd bottle of vodka to make up the difference."

China's last naval battle was more than a century ago. They lost.

The key question is finding a commander. There has to be an overall commander with control over land, sea, air and space domains. Anyone Xi picks would be able to depose him. As anyone who has wisely read Walls of Men knows, this is how dynasties can change. It is how the Ch'ing were overthrown.

Once had one right next to my row right in the middle of taking drink orders when her pen ran out. The aisle was jam packed in both directions and she looked panicked. I offered her my pen. She looked so relieved, and whispered "were you going to order a drink? It's on the house." I whispered back, "can I get a couple beers?"

She brought me two beers and a whole box of assorted snacks and told me to take whatever I wanted. And returned my pen.

The minimum launch temperature varies from 38F to 49F depending on other variables. High RH and higher wind (up to a cutoff) counterintuitively allows for cooler launch minimums. Dry and calm means the upper end minimum.

The Israelis took out all of Irans SAMs. Whatever air defenses the IRG can cobble together won't last more than a few minutes once the shooting begins. I would expect the IRG to launch fairly large salvo of ballistic missiles with the ensuing counter salvo to be devastating to whatever remaining offensive capability the IRG has left. Then the real attack on the IRG will begin.

I'd also say the military is almost entirely Islamjc while the population is more of a mix. That is one thing that has been mentioned about the immigrant crisis (foreign army!) But that is historically true.

Yep, sure was. I was there.

A building a few doors down from my dad's accounting office in Niagara Falls caught fire and there was a fear that the fire department wasn't going to be able to put it out before the whole block burned down. His buddy across the street got out his snowmobile as did my dad and he and my dad, with me clinging crammed on back, defied the travel ban to snowmobile all the way into the city and rescue some important file boxes. In the end, they did get the fire out with no damage to adjoining buildings. And we didn't get busted by the fuzz.

251 234 We do tend to forget that the 70's was a bit of the wild west when it came to advertising. I wore tight cutoffs and so did every girl I knew. We weren't doing it because it was comfortable. Just looking at an old Cosmo creeps me out.

My two oldest granddaughters happened upon some pics of the lovely Mrs. from the 70's. Yeah, hot pants and some see-thru top that DID NOT come close to containing those bad boys.

The girls were horrified. Their Mimi got a kick out of it.

People can complain about the 70s all they want. At least women wanted men and wanted to be desired by them back then. I'll take that over today's septum-ring, green hair, baggy clothing, "I'd rather encounter a bear" man-hating bullshit.

252 I used to wear White Linen.

I later wore Jessica McClintock that smelled floral. They stopped making it, but people liked it and asked what it was. One nurse director said it gave her a headache. I didn't like her and thought, "Good!" as she was not my boss. The only problem was that bees and yellow jackets (allergic to them) would chase me.

I now wear Dior J'adore because it's floral and not super strong. Many perfumes are too strong for me or smell like men's cologne.

253 That top photo is gorgeous, Ace.

The stars and Milky Way are pretty on my parent's farm, too.

I remain mad that I did not see the Northern Lights like everybody. Now I am irritated over the lack of snow for the West. Praying for a White Valentine's, St. Patrick's and Easter. Maybe a White Memorial Day. Or rain would be nice. Either/or/both.

All-time record low for downtown LA is 28F. However, LAX record low was 23F, set in Jan 1937.

It was the best of times.

I'm rather shocked at photos of what I wore at times, and no doubt my family was. However, I rocked it and if no one said anything I was oblivious.

At one of my second cousin's weddings I served punch. I was wearing a plum velvet mini dress with lace on the long sleeves. In the family photo it is very short and probably blew my grandmother, aunt, parents, and family of the bride's minds. Behind the tablecloth you couldn't tell. But, oh, boy, it was short.

At a summer family reunion, after church, I am wearing a tee shirt & my Daisy Duke's with about 50 relatives. If my mother and grandmothers had said anything I would have changed, as I was not ornery and rebellious, just clueless as to how much leg I was showing.

Years prior my mother did tell me to hit an uncle of hers if he touched my back to see if I was wearing a bra (training bra, training 'em for something). He didn't. It would have been a spicy reunion if I knocked him off the porch! She had to explain later, that he felt up her sister as a teen.So she was on alert for the perv.

258 That's interesting. Off the top of my head, I would've guessed the record low would've been a little colder than that.

Being on a coast really moderates a cities temp range, up and down. It’s the continental interiors that always go to extremes.

The Citay is at the tip of the *tah-dah* San Francisco Peninsula, where it really narrows down. It's got salt water on three sides. I don't think there is a location with the city limits that's more than 5 miles from the water.

259 I've been wearing mostly Halston Z-14 since the 80s. My wife liked it then and still does.
