Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 28, 2026 [TRex] Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional, but only if you are in very warm surroundings. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. [Top photo: Winter in Yosemite. Photo credit unknown.]Porsche engineer Peter Falk joined the company in 1959 and rose quickly to head various testing programs, including the first road going and racing 911 cars. He served as navigator in the first international race for the 911, the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. Racing was competitive R&D and run out of the passenger car business. In the 1960s, Falk managed the racing program. In the mid-1960s and 1970s, the factory built pure racers like the 917 to challenge for wins at the biggest races. In 1981, the racing program was formally moved from under the passenger car business and Falk became Porsche's racing director. In the 1970s and 1980s, Porsche moved from chasing others to having everyone else chase Porsche. Porsche did not just win - it dominated. Falk lead an amazing group of people that accomplished amazing things. It was a right place, right time, right people scenario. The engineers were not flashy and let the cars and drivers take the spotlight. It was a time before everything became electronic and driven by computers. Trial and error, intelligence, willpower, and on-the-fly engineering pushed progress. Porsche claimed motorsport success in the 1980s across many forms of motorsport (including LeMans and Dakar), remarkable for a racing department that was tiny by modern standards. Most people have never heard of Peter Falk or the people in his orbit but Porsche as a company and motorsport in general would not be the same without their involvement and Herr Falk's leadership. Peter Falk's earthy race saw the checkered flag on January 23. He was 93. No, Porsche Peter Falk is not the same as the Columbo Peter Falk. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Street parking in the snow.
My town doesn't plow residential streets unless there is more than 5" of snow. Several years ago we had a foot and a half fall overnight. The city plow came through, a road grader actually, buried my car. I was just setting out to dig it out when a city employee arrived with a snowblower and dug me out. He also blew my sidewalk. Ferdinand Porsche spent a couple years in the slammer after WWII for working with the Nazis and using slave labor during the war to build vehicles. His son Ferry was also imprisoned, but released after six months. It was a miracle the company survived.

This is where they load up the rocket with fuel and LOX and got through a simulated countdown to about 30 secs before ignition. That hard freeze in the forecast Jan 31 - Feb 1 may mess that up, don't know. With Artemis I, they had a time with some liquid H2 leaks and had to roll the whole thing back to the VAB for repairs. When VW was trying to start up after the war, workmen were living in the rubble and trying to assemble cars. Henry Ford sent someone to see what they were doing and to see if he should invest, as Europe would need millions of cars pretty quickly. His representative said that it was a mess not worth getting involved in. Bad mistake. Of course, Ford eventually built factories in Germany, Britain, elsewhere, but owning VW would have been cheap way to corner the market.

I one time look into that "charity". Terrible. Something like 60+% of donations go to marketing, which leaves only ~35% for anything charitable. Each state has its own K4K organization. That state org passes out cash to kid charities in that state, which averaged about 13% of donations they receive ( a little less than half of their charity stuff). Carburetors were and are supplied WAY rich, to prevent burnt exhaust valves, holed pistons.
Detroit purposely kept valve spring height (tension) a little on the weak side for production models. This acts as a natural rev limiter, preventing warranty returns from “overenthusiastic” drivers. Careful tuning will get you about 20 mpg on the highway, 25 in a car. Very similar to what modern V8 achieves now, with fuel injection. The catalytic converter was a “tell”. They detuned the engines to such a degree raw fuel was spewing out the exhaust. What to do? Let’s burn it! Turns out at highest engine performance efficiency, HC and CO are minimized. But NOX spikes. That’s the stuff that, when exposed to sunlight, creates smog. So they basically cut fuel mileage in half, to eliminate NOX. They did that by reducing compression, retarded ignition timing, and retarded valve timing, and other stupid engineering band-aids. Engines ran hot and prone to going chernobyl. Posted by: LRob in OK at January 28, 2026 10:35 PM (47diA) The one I had was mechanical secondaries, and was a double pumper. I had put it on a 1971 roadrunner with a 340. When I stuck the holley on it it became frigging silly. It was powerful enough that I semi exploded the clutch within the next few rides. I couldn't believe the power it had. "It's dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good." That's crazy you might think, bump it up to the very day. They got average temp guidelines. Tanking operations can't be done if the average temp is less than 41.4F for 24 hours. By starting earlier, they can keep it above that average. Forecast low for the space coast there is about 26F that night. When my number 4 boy was about 11, racing junior dragsters, a TF guy named Scott Palmer came to our track to do some testing. Way before race time, he let my son get in the TF cockpit, telling him to NOT pull the chute lever. When he got ready to make his first pass, I took my son up about 25 feet to the side of the startup area. He jumped behind me when it started and I laughed. Washed-up 1980s actress Molly Ringwald has declared the Trump administration a full-blown “fascist government” and warned that anyone supporting the president’s policies, especially on immigration, will be branded as traitors and face punishment once Democrats gain power. The former teen star, best known for films like Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, posted a four-minute video on social media where she compared Trump supporters to Nazi collaborators in World War II France. “I feel like I can’t stay silent, and neither should you,” Ringwald said. “There’s something horrible going on in our country right now — we had one of the greatest countries in the world — but right now, this is a fascist government.” “It’s not becoming a fascist government, it is a fascist government,” Ringwald continued. “ICE is brutalizing people.” Posted by: Crusader at January 28, 2026 11:26 PM (Cjcf6) 183

Now, for launch, the minimum launch temperature for the SLS is 38 - 49F, a wide range that depends on RH and wind speed. Counterintuitively, the lower temp minimum occurs with higher RH and wind speed, exactly opposite of what you'd think. When it's very dry and calm, that's when you get the 49F minimum. Regarding the Schumer Shutdown 2 threat, I'm glad that at least bloggers are pretty consistently sharp, pointing out that failure to enforce immigration law is anti-democratic. We express our constitutional self-rule through electing representatives who write bills and pass them to the elected executive to sign into law; but if it stops there, then it's just democracy theater, form without substance. Where our elected legislators are the voice of democracy, cops are its hands, making it real. To oppose law enforcement, as Democrats do, is to oppose majoritarian self-rule itself (as expected of the party of bureaucratic anarcho-tyranny).
But. Where's the plan? I'm still not hearing one from anyone but me. House Republicans need to get off their butts and internally negotiate a raft of the most MAGA bills that could barely pass with their narrow majority, a dream platform that would never get past the 60-vote cloture threshold in the Senate, and then hold them like a threat. So then, Senate Republicans can point to that arsenal held in abeyance and say, if we have to nuke the filibuster just to fund Homeland Security, then we'll pass every single one of those other bills too. Why would Luke be sugar free? Maybe because it was aimed more at Gentiles and they were more likely to be diabetic as they were not following Jewish dietary restrictions. Though none of us can obey the law perfectly, that’s why we need Christ.

According to Grok, there is an upper temp limit for launch as well, 94.5F or higher for 30 minutes. Vehicle performance does vary with all these weather variables, but within those safety ranges, it's very small, only a few percent. In colder temps, the solid fuel in the boosters burns a bit slower. Air density near the surface affects drag. Colder means denser and more drag. That requires the control system to adjust on the fly, but the variation is not enough to be a problem within the safety limits. That seems wrong to me. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are the similar gospels. John is the "one of these things is not like the others" one. He relied on the reports of others, including Matthew and/or Mark, obviously, but also, some figure, interviewing Mary herself.
“ICE is brutalizing people.” Posted by: Crusader at January 28, 2026 11:26 PM (Cjcf6) Dummy. Sad about the kids killed having snow fun. Sparked a memory I hadn't recalled in a long, long time.
We didn't get a lot of snow worth mentioning when I was a kid. That may be why Mom didn't know how to dress me for the cold. Like those cloth gloves that got soaked through as soon as they touched snow. Also, sledding hills are few and far between. Anyway, one snowy winter, out here on Rancho Webworko, there were a bunch of us kids - family & friends, on a big, long toboggan, towed around the pasture behind the old Allis tractor. It was hilarious. Even falling off of it. Real flatland fun. It was one of those things I figure they did more often when the older kids were young, but only did once in my life (like a lot of things before the family fell apart). I think the toboggan may actually still be out there in the rafters of the metal barn. The Allis is long since put out to pasture. So long ago but more memorable than breakfast. …40th anniversary of the Challenger explosion…
I can never forget the day I’d just sat down with our 4½ year old daughter to watch Mister Rogers, and when I turned on the tv, there was Dan Rather, looking grave, with a model of the launch rocket on his desk. My heart sank before he could say a word. And yesterday was the anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire. What I’ve read about the new planned moon mission concerns me. Don’t need a repeat of the errors that destroyed two shuttles. 🚀 Well, we watched the penultimate Resident Alien earlier today, and now we get to conclude the series. It's been a fun run. Never watched the conclusion of Babylon 5. Missed the last season of Trek Next Gen and Deep Space 5 both. Didn't catch the last of Warehouse 13. Life got too busy for most of those. Glad to get to the end of a series that knows it's concluding. So, I'll clock out now. 🕦 https://youtu.be/jJ4IUjjVfng G'nite, y'all. The driver, a dude in his early 20's who was always the delivery guy pulls up and the first thing out of his mouth was "did you hear about the shuttle? It blew up." My father and brother was there. Looked out the window and a Pinto had crashed into a light pole and had burst into flames. Posted by: RickZ In reverse? I thought they were only supposed to go all torchy when they got rear-ended. Posted by: mikeski at January 29, 2026 12:53 AM (VHUov) 313

US Hwy 50. We drove it from Delta, UT to Baker, NV. There was a bunch of nothing. It was beautiful.

Posted by: mikeski at January 29, 2026 12:53 AM (VHUov) Nope. Head-on into the light pole. Maybe the car got rear-ended first, pushing it into the light pole? Saw no other car but it could have sped off. Posted by: RickZ at January 29, 2026 12:56 AM (gKDq2) 316
311 I was in high school when the Challenger exploded. I was home because of the flu. Was going to watch 'The Price is Right' with Mom, but the space shuttle was launching instead, so of course we watched. It was surreal.

Does that Rage For The Machine idiot Tommy Morello know? (No, he doesn't). Celebrities and pro jocks are not smart people. Average, at best. They are just exceptional at ONE thing and made a LOT of money from it. That doesn't translate in others, yet they seem to think so.
Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at January 29, 2026 12:48 AM (sAmhv) This is true. The funny thing is whenever I came across musicians that were dumb as a bag of hammers it was usually not anyone from the metal tribe. Maybe it's because we didn't view ourselves as "artists". Whenever I ran across musicians who thought of themselves as artists, thats when shit got weird, and it was very very rarely metal dudes. Artist was just another way of saying I'm a narcissistic douchebag who thinks the world gives a shit about what I have to say. Us metal guys, we didn't give a shit who cared or not, its not why we were in it. I still have that attitude, I still don't give a shit, and I say it a lot. When metal started splitting into all these weird sub genres of false metal you started seeing more "artists". Douchebags against the machine is a classic example. Posted by: mikeski at January 29, 2026 12:53 AM (VHUov) Nope. Head-on into the light pole. --- Ford can be very stupid. If the Pinto had an electric fuel pump as did Buddy's ~1986 F-150, it could have kept pumping after the collision. All that excess fuel could have ignited as did the pick-up. My 02 manual has a section on, how to turn the fuel pump on after a collision. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at January 29, 2026 01:10 AM (/bEIA) 327

I went to the restaurant supply store and purchased a *whole case* of 2 oz cups before the Club Christmas Party, just like you requested! And then you got y'self banninated. Ugh. (That's when you grab on to a vehicle and get pulled along the icy/snowy road for fun) Posted by: JQ The proper term is ski jogging. On a dare I grabbed the bumper of a Spokane County Sheriff when I was a tender teen. I figured out that he knew I was back there when he got to the top of the hill and he sped up pretty quickly. I wisely let go. Scored alot of points with the gang on that one. Scored even more when he drove back by about 10 minutes later and shook his finger at me. I lived in Boston's North End some 40 years ago (wow!). Parking was miserable even in the best of times. During snow - no previously shoveled spot was ever taken by a non-shovelee.
It was known widely to do that would be a very, very poor choice. ---- I used to live in South Philadelphia. Same thing there. Well, probably worse....in true Philly fashion, people have been murdered over those parking spots. I am sooo glad to be out of there.
