  • Bitlocker: The encryption technology where everyone has access to your data except you. (Tom's Hardware)

Microsoft's Bitlocker is infamous for suddenly enabling itself without you explicitly going through the setup process so that neither you nor anybody else has any idea what the encryption key is, and you data is simply gone.

But if you do go through the setup process, it automatically shares your key with Microsoft so the government can ask for and receive your keys.

    Which government?

    All of them.

Tech News

  • Charge me $3000 for a box of rocks once, shame on you. Charge me $3000 for a box of rocks four times... (WCCFTech)

A Reddit user ordered a "resale" unit of an Nvidia RTX 5090 from Amazon - that is, a unit that had been return during the 30 day window - and received a box containing a towel and a bunch of rocks.

Well, scams happen. Not your fault.

Except this was the fourth time. It's Amazon's fault for not checking returns, yes, but it's also his fault for still believing that they do.

  • Of course you could order your 5090 directly from a card maker like Zotac instead of Amazon and avoid this issue and instead they'll abruptly raise prices by 20% and cancel your order at the old price while blaming a system error. (WCCFTech)

You could also just play Hytale which runs smoothly on Vega 8 laptop graphics from 2021 even at 2880x1620. Albeit on low settings, but low settings are almost identical to "epic" settings - the only visible difference is render distance.

  • Lemonade plans to half Tesla insurance rates for miles driven using the FSD - Full Self-Driving - mode, because it has fewer accidents than humans. (Reuters) (archive site)

Which, yes, means that your insurance company knows exactly when and how and how much you are driving.

It's also not quite clear what the actual reduction in your insurance rates from this would be. Half cost... But what component of the cost is directly attributable to the number of hours (or miles) driven?

  • I built more in two months with agents than in the previous year. I used almost none of it. (Mahdi Yusuf)

This guy gets it. AI coding assistants aren't useless; they range from super helpful for churning through boring repetitive tasks, to actively dangerous.
Point an agent at a vague goal - "build me a tool that helps with X" - and you'll get something that looks impressive and rots in a folder. Point an agent at a specific task - "rewrite these 200 API calls to use the new authentication pattern" - and you'll save a week.
I had to perform a task with a particular piece of unfamiliar software with painfully poor design and documentation. I used ChatGPT and after a couple of days of trial and error I got something that was slow but worked - and it would have taken me at least a week to perform the same task myself.

The it turned out that the tool I needed to interpret the results was offline, possibly permanently dead. I found an alternative, which my company already had a subscription to... And found that this alternative solved the entire problem and the two days had been completely wasted.
One is generative theatre. The other is actual leverage.

The difference is tactical versus strategic deployment.
Where, in this case, tactical deployment is solving a problem that you actually have, and strategic deployment is solving a problem that nobody has.

  • cURL no longer offers bug bounties. (Ars Technica)

Because the project is being overwhelmed with AI-generate fake bug reports.

  • Microsoft 360 went down again. (CRN)

I had a typo there. Almost left it in.

  • A new test for AI labs: Are you even trying to make money? (Tech Crunch)

Good question. Dumb article, but good question.
Think of it in these terms:

    • Level 5: We are already making millions of dollars every day, thank you very much.
    • Level 4:We have a detailed multi-stage plan to become the richest human beings on Earth.
    • Level 3:We have many promising product ideas, which will be revealed inthe fullness of time.
    • Level 2:We have the outlines of a concept of a plan.
    • Level 1:True wealth is when you love yourself.
Fine so far. At the top, actually making money. At the bottom, idiot dreamers or possibly communists.
The big names are all at Level 5: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and so on.
    Hold up.

OpenAI lost $8 billion last year, is expected to lose $14 billion this year, $40 billion next year, and as much as $74 billion in 2028 even if they meet revenue goals.

Did an AI write that article?

  • AI luminaries at Davos clash over how close human-level intelligence really is. (Yahoo Finance)

What a useful word, "luminaries". It covers equally objects that shine of their own right, and masses of stone and dust that merely reflect the brilliance of others.

On the one hand, Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, formerly of Meta, and genuine Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis of Google, who both say that current AI systems are nowhere near human levels and - at least in the case of LeCun - that current approaches can never get there and entirely new methods are needed.

On the other hand Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Sam Altman of OpenAI who say that their tools are approaching the level of Nobel Prize winners and you'll all be out of work by next week.

I think I'm going to go with the guys who didn't trash the global electronic supply chain only so they could burn a hundred billion dollars of investor money.

"Making millions of dollars a day" and "losing billions of dollars a year" aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Revenue vs profit.

Add in all the usual Wall Street chicanery ("they just write it off, Jerry!"), and I don't think we can blame the logic of the article on AI.

.....entirely.

17 Bitlocker: The encryption technology where everyone has access to your data except you. (Tom's Hardware)

Enough Army laptops get stolen out of cars and such that they've been using bitlocker for some time. You have to enter a long PIN every time you start up your system. Thankfully, our G6/IT department helpfully puts a sticker on every system with the PIN (which is the same one used for the entire organization)...

19 The ramp upward AI burn cycle reminds me of MoviePass. For those who never saw it, MoviePass was a business model conceived by making a diagram in feces on the walls of a padded cell. You paid an annual flat subscription fee, installed an app on your phone and kept a VISA card they sent you in their wallet. When you wanted to see a movie, you used the app to find out was was playing in the range you specified and made your selection. When you got to the theater, you used the MoviePass issued VISA to buy your ticket. (The app was a horrible power hog and would kill your phone's battery in a couple hours if you didn't shut down your phone after buying your ticket.)

I did this in 2018 and kept track of how many movies I saw to determined what my cost per movie was. "Gee," you might say, "didn't this mean they lost more money the more you used the service? BINGO! By the time the subscription was near to running out, the company was flailing with restrictions on use and access to a narrower range of releases. (They never allowed IMAX or 3D, even if you were willing to pay the difference in cost over a regular ticket.)

22 I knew the company wouldn't be around much longer and sure enough, they died around what would have been two month in if I'd renewed the subscription.

My final tally for the cost per movie was $2.25. That was the last year I went to a theater on my own dime. Everything since then has been by invitation or promotional screening like the Amazon PrimePremiere program.

Amazon knows the theater business, between digital projection and gigabit+ broadband is likely going to shift to on-demand content and tries to make their in-house productions (that house encompasses MGM) suitable for the big screen. so those were mostly pretty good experiences.

I liked the clearly 1970s stereo visible at :19, with its brushed aluminum face, VU meters, and actual toggle switches. Remember when stereos didn't all look like Darth Vader designed them? Marantz stereos for example, with their wood (?) cases . . . mmm . . .

31 Unbelievably, it's 71 F. here, with 17 mph winds out of the south. Apparently the rain will arrive here around 8 am and the temps will begin to plummet, twenty degrees in a couple of hours and so onward.

I can go work out in another hour or so -- once I find my motivation. It's been getting clever, that motivation, finding new places to hide. I suspect it's collaborating with the little Dagny kitten, who vanishes into a private hidey-hole for part of each evening.

Computers, at least PCs, are the same way. Remember when they came in beige? I don't miss the giant CRT monitors, but the entire unit seemed much . . . friendlier.

Maybe that's the point. Once upon a time, ca. 1985, PCs were exotic, alien things to consumers. Molding them in black would have subtly disturbed people. After the boxes became part of the fabric of our lives, they could be any color.

(Or maybe beige plastic costs more than plain black. Or both.)

50 And Apple computers are still in non-black configurations -- silver, white, and I think for a time there were units that came in white and green, or something like that? Even the mice are in white. It distinguishes them from PCs, of course, so the Apple fanbois can be sure other people will know they, the fanbois, are part of The Club. But maybe it's also a subtle marketing move to make the units seem friendlier.

Though of course there are PC laptops in light colors. Maybe this theory is all a fever dream from a brain (mine) casting about for something to focus on in the early morning.

I shall have more coffee.

58 OH, that's right! The local CBS outlet has reminded me that the schools will close tomorrow and maybe Tuesday thanks to the "dangerous cold." Heh. A morning temp of 24 F. is bush-league compared to what some of you have to deal with. Of course all the kids want to go to school in T-shirts.

Though, if there is ice on the roads, school buses will have troubles. As will the SUV moms who ferry their spawn to the indoctrination centers. Better all around if they stay home tomorrow.

My grandmother on my mother's side lived NW of Nashville, close enough to Clarksville for people to use that as point of reference. She had been a mail carrier during WW1 and had stories about how people handled the flu then as well as a story about a relative who had been drug to his death by a spooked mule. 80 So this was an answer to my prayer "Show me something of yourself today, Lord." Spouse and I went into Staples to get the bulletin copied for our senior center worship service . It is very long, everything is printed out so it's about 12 pages. Anyway, there was a woman there with a beautiful tee shirt with a big sunflower and butterflies and it said, "Inspired". I remarked to her "I like your tee shirt. I am a Christian and butterflies are a symbol of the resurrection". She said "Me too." and we both said "God bless you" which was kind of fitting because our worship service yesterday at the senior center was on God blessing us and our encouragement to bless others.

My family had raised cattle and horses but not sheep.

Our cattle (and horses) were smart enough to shelter in our barn when things got cold without any action on our part.

I have a story about a tank gunner whose family name was Clapp who told me that was because sheep were a vector of that STD and he came from a line of sheep herders. Given that he had interacted with me enough to realize there no shock value to something as tame as that, he might have been telling me something that he believed to be true.

118 I'm researching gaming PCs for 3D scanning. Specifically, a rig that can support the full capability of a Revopoint Metro Y Pro scanner and software. The Revopoint forum members say a fast processor (Intel 275xx) or faster is a good starting point (Ryzen 9 9950HX or better is a feasible alternative).

The real kicker is RAM. For the best quality mesh after scanning a medium sized object like a vehicle engine block might require a PC with 96GB or 128GB of RAM. For onsite versatility, most users opt for a laptop.

Gaming laptops with non-Quadro GPUs seem to be the ticket. The GPU requires at least 8 GB of VRAM and for software compatibility it must be NVIDIA (sigh).

Any recommendations as to which manufacturer makes the most reliable gaming laptops?

Yes; on the vintage-oriented channels I watch most (MeTV, Grit, Movies!, Heroes & Icons), the overwhelming majority of the ads are for products for geezers. I get it, and I'm technically in their ranks; but I get really tired of spots for HurryCanes, incontinence products, "little blue pills," and landline phones with closed-captioning.

Even though I hate that Buick has ditched all of its sedans for SUVs now, a spot for that or other luxury vehicles is a breath of fresh air.

It had a 12 key pad with 0-9 along with up/down for the channels. I forget what the 12the button was for. Country's top expert in the law of self defense weighs in. The firearm matters—and the media is hiding it. At the Minneapolis Border Patrol shooting, the suspect was armed with a SIG Sauer P320 AXG Combat, a high-capacity 9mm pistol with a threaded barrel, extended 20–21 round magazine, and a SIG Romeo optic—a setup costing $1,500–$2,000. This was not a cheap carry gun.

Officers were in a physical struggle with an armed suspect when a gun was perceived and the word “gun” was shouted. Under settled self-defense law, officers are entitled to rely on fellow officers’ reasonable perceptions. They do not have to personally confirm the threat.

Once a firearm appears during active resistance, the legal standard is simple: reasonable perception of imminent deadly force. That standard was met here. Freeze-frame activism doesn’t override real-time dynamics, and the law does not require officers to wait to be shot. This was a tragic—but lawful—use of force.

197 >>Fighting to keep criminal, often felon illegal aliens form being deported seems like a strange hill to die on. These people or insane.

The Democrat Party relies on illegals for political power at both the local and national level. They allow them to come into the country, have networks to move them to desired locations and then they use tax dollars to give them healthcare, housing, food and more. In exchange they get votes and bodies for the census and House seats.

There is nothing organic about these protests. A guy on X managed to infiltrate a Signal group called ICE Watch. They are highly organized and watching ICE movements, tracking their license plates, dispatching rioters, etc.. And it's not just a bunch of loons. A woman who works for the Walz administration is part of the group and so are Democrat politicians. Renee Good was part of ICE Watch and so was Pretti.

That's why Democrats are freaking out and claiming they will shut down the government over ICE funding. This is an existential fight for the Democrat Party. No way can the Trump administration can back down now.

247 Wolfus, go to your library and get the original Herriot series. Much more true to the books and excellent in every way. I can't even watch the new ones; the first season was just after I had read the whole series and I was so annoyed I was yelling at the tv the whole time and gave up after a couple episodes.

I would probably enjoy it if I hadn't already read the books and watched the whole original series, but I had.

True, I had never read any of the books before this new show started. I recently read the second in the series, though, and to me the new cast and the tone seem to fit quite well. Samuel West in particular, as Siegfried Farnon the senior vet, is a wonder -- he *moves* like no actor since Robert Culp.

302 When I had to write code, I made everything brute force and documented the daylights out of it. If anyone but me needed to look at it, it had to be clear. If I was opening it up, I probably hadn’t looked at it in years, and I needed the comments to navigate.

The piece about the tool you needed reminded me of a program my company used for years. It was written for Microsoft basic around DOS 3. When (I think) Win 7 came out, we needed to get off the 8bit program. The problem was a decade of data written in MBF (Microsoft Binary Format). Anything newer needed to be translated into IEEE format.

I coded a translator in C to handle the bitwise manipulation line by line, but that wouldn’t work with the new code, so we had to go looking for something to handle the translation more smoothly. Eventually, the person creating the new code found a DLL on a website, totally undocumented but free. He incorporated it into a VB for Office application and away we went.
