Source of Fire review. Since when did 'Murica get so sissified in making matches? I have always preferred to light my cigars with the standard 'ol basic wooden match. It (used to be anyway) would light the first time, provide a sufficient flame, and had enough stick to make sure you got the cigar well started. One seldom had to light a second one. But today, that just doesn't happen. The matches you see here came from one of my favorite Brick & Mortar cigar shops and they, well... they just suck. I have found that I must use two and sometimes three at a time to get a flame sufficient to even get the cigar started. And as you can see, they are short and burn quickly. End result, very unsatisfactory, with a lot of broken unlit matches on the patio which pissed off Mrs D and makes the cigar experience less fun. Now the Zippo lighter is a gift from my Army days and it is useful even today for many fire starting things. But, it is not very good for lighting cigars. And this may be just me, but I find any cigar I light with this lighter brings a lighter fluid taste to the tobacco. It will ruin even the best cigar. I recommend you avoid using one. One interesting thing I read about Zippos though; it is the first device made in America that offered a lifetime warranty. I'm not surprised. This one is 40 years old and is still going strong. Finally the Butane lighter. These range from cheap plastic ones to this fine example that Santa brought me 'cause I'm such a good and fine fellow! It is sleek, provides a great flame even in wind and rain, and one filling can last quite a while. The butane version has eliminated the fluid taste that comes with the Zippo, and I like mine. A lot. But damn! Be careful on sunny days because it is hard to see the flame. This is particularly important for any man or woman with a moustache. So light up and enjoy a fine cigar today and sip some great whiskey.Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you!

Nicks Cigar World New! A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. Be very thankful for that...we've had snow overnight (~5inches) and then sleet from 8am and still coming down...supposed to end around 9pm. Should be an absolute joy to deal with that in tomorrow's 14 degree weather.

Diogenes I bought some big ol' wooden "kitchen matches" at Chynah-mart a while back, still haven't used them. But they're big and probably would deliver what you're looking for from matches.
For lighters I have a Jetline Lightning single-flame butane torch which I use most of the time. Wind-resistant, adjustable. Good for touch-ups, fine-point single flame.
For larger ring gauges, and when the wind's not an issue, have a nice Lotus T3 table-top lighter, some heft, simple classic styling, triple-flame.
Also have a $5 torch lighter from Chy-nah, bought at a vape shop (actually place has a humidor too), which I use for my "travel" cigar kit (cigar store, range, etc). Refillable, works great. Single flame.

Continuing proof that even experienced firearm owners need to be cautious, aware and vigilant about potential for unintended consequences: a neighbor of mine on the hill had a 1911 which suffered a clogged live round down-breach while out shooting with the grandkiddies, and immediately packed up the gun while saying "I'll get to this later." 3 weeks later, he gets it out and looks it over and says to self "this is easy; I'll just get a poker road and push it backwards." Oh, but to make it real, guess what happened? It was lodged pretty tight and instead of disassembling or putting the pistol in a clamp, he just pushed hard. It got clumsy, dropped on the floor, dislodged the round into the right position and the pin came in. Bam. nice big hole goes through the wife's favorite bay window and lodges into the new expensive safety camera on the detached garage. The Jeff Cooper list of rules is inviolable.

Evening all, no range report.
Received the bi-pod for the new rifle and installed.
Also the folks at Ken Farrell responded to my query as to what rings I should have ordered for the rifle. They have been ordered.
I did get a backup set of rings from NightForce itself and the scope is temporarily mounted. It is looking good. :-)
But I want to get the rings from Farrell before the final installation. Pictures will follow.
As far as the storm is concerned, I think the end of it is near.
I went outside around 11am when we had 2 inches on the ground and was able to sweep it off my car and the walk as it was a light powder.
But a couple of hours ago it got more icy and we had at least 5-6 more inches.
Thankfully I do not have to go into the office until Wednesday.

Evening, Weasel, and Gun Thread Horde. Went to a flea market today, saw some interesting guns; did not buy any. Got few tools. Buddy bought an H&R "Topper" 410 shotgun, very pretty it is, too. I looked at an ancient .22 short "Boston Bulldog" revolver, but passed on it. Cylinder does not lock up as it should.

Hello, Weasel! I cleared a path out of the garage for the car in the AM before the sleet accumulation got too bad. Even then, I could still feel the weight by the time I was done w/ the snow the plows shoved into the driveway entrance.

To clear the snow from Pennsylvania Avenue for the JFK inaugural parade, the 3rd Infantry Regiment was brought in from Ft. Myer with flamethrowers to melt all of the accumulated snow and ice. You won't be seeing that again anytime soon.

Icemaggedon has pretty much petered out. Looking at how the real thing was playing out against the models, I was keeping my fingers crossed but not saying anything out loud. And that worked. Wasn't too bad at all.
As for my area, upstate SC, which is part of the GSP NWS regional area, things weren't too bad. Last I saw Mrs. Duke had about 31K power outage count at the peak, down to 21K or so. Most of that was in Northern Greenville County and up across the NC line in a spot between Asheville and Hendersonville. Some outages in NE Spartanburg. Some other smaller number scattered around.
Power never even blinked the whole time here. Knock on wood.

No range time since last duty day prior week, but one reloading thing. Was setting up to charge a bunch of primed 30-06 cases (to dirty up my M1s, about which Weasel has a rich and tasty collection of videos above).
Use the Lee AutoDrum. Never had an issue with it. This time, the TAC powder didn't leak on my test pulls - it poured out. Hmmm. Left it, figured I'd look online for tips and then call Lee. Didn't get around to calling Lee all week.
Went out yesterday and thought - maybe I just assembled it wrong? So I tried again. Now - seems to work normally (no real leakage at all, even with a fine powder like TAC). Hmm. Still a head scratcher of sorts. But as long as I can load up the M1 food, fine. Then it's back to finish off the 30 carbine and then do a c**p-ton of 9mike mike.

About three years ago was checking out at an auto parts store and they had this bin of cheap disposable torch lighters. $1.99 each. Single burner, piezoelectric, with 90 degree head. Hot one and found that they can be refilled with Ronson butane. Several times now.
The single torch works great for touching up the cigar burn line. Store sold them for electrical heat shrink and match soldier.
Was there about a month ago. They still have them but bumped price up to $2.99. Got another one as a backup. One of the best values evah!

The Churchill Crocodile was arguably the most capable flamethrower tank of WWII. With its trailer holding 400+ gallons of fuel, it had the deepest "magazine" of all the flamethrower tanks and had a range of just over 100 meters.

Range report
Took the Henry lever action .22 rifle out. Only 25 yards at the range. Wish we had planned for the woods, but weather is spotty.
I love that little rifle. You have to slow down and think about every shot. No kick. Not loud. Easy to handle. Someday Marine will want it back.

The storm is gone but the big drop in temperature has started. Going to get bad and will last about a week. Lows in the teens and maybe single digits. It's very wet outside so it will probably ice up. We haven't lost power so that's good. I'm on a mountain here in north Alabama so I have no intention to drive down it.

Shoot 5.56 NATO in a .223 rifle and you will eventually run the risk of blowing up the rifle in your face, especially if you're using some of the higher pressure rounds like M855A1.

Break them into little sticks about 1/2" across. Now, hold them up to your Zippo, or your Churchill Crocodile, whichever you have on hand. Light your cigar from the flame coming off of the cedar wick. This is the way...

With the weather report I won't be getting to the range any time soon. Winter stay in the house gun activities:
- reloading - mostly 38 special wadcutters, 45 acp, and 45 Colt.
- wipe down and inspect the BP guns, renew the lube on cylinder arbors and the threads on the percussion gun nipples.
- check my supply of black English flints for the flintlocks, should be good but they are getting harder to find recently so I keep an eye open for them.
Spring will get here eventually.

Sticks like that used to be called "spills" in the days before matches and lighters were common.

Interesting idea. You can get ferrocerium "flints" for damned near free if you buy them in bulk through the online Chicom merchants. I speculate that the cerium is basically a waste product of refining more desirable rare earth metals.

Dad would use a Bic disposable to light a sliver of fat pine, then use that to light his cigar. The handful of times i smoked a cigar, I did the same. Used that method a metric fecal tonne of times while I smoked a pipe back in the middle 80s.

Your describing what was called a wheellock several centuries ago. (I have a vague memory of one mentioned in one of the Musketeer stories.) They worked but the mechanism was too delicate for military use. The various versions of the flintlock were easier and cheaper to manufacture, easier to maintain and more robust.

And it combines three torch jets to make a blast of flame under whose onslaught even the thickest cigar must yield in short order.
It wasn't even expensive, I don't think. We live in blessed times.

Way, way back in the day I was in the M16A2 Army, and I worked with US Secret Service and their CAT team guys had CAR-15's that I thought were the coolest.

I have a small stash of zippo lighters. The last one I used a lot was a camo pattern zippo. Must have been a good pattern, because I lost it in the backyard and couldn't find it. Maybe the dude who has my old house will eventually find it. One of my harley customers is a huge cigar dude. Built a frigging small building in his backyard thats stocked with serious booze and a huge humidor. He's always giving me special cigars. He also gives me cigar lighters every year. The last 2 were a brand called Tomolo. Looks like it has a space shuttle engine with the 3 jets. I feel like I could gas weld with the damn thing. Don't know shit about the brand, but they work great on cigars.

Berserker before I decided to just leave it be and shift the rear sight a few clicks to compensate, I was considering using my single-flame torch lighter to heat up part of the front sight on one of my M1s. It's frozen (screw hasn't even loosened up with Kroil). It's just a tiny bit off-center.
But the rear sight clicks fixed the problem. And when I eventually sell this M1 it will be the next owner's "problem".
So yeah, those little torch lighters seem well suited to "off-label" uses. Or at least they tempt some dimmer sorts like me to try things.

CBD, IIRC, MILSPEC standard at that time for M16s was 4 MOA. Technically, that rifle would have met MILSPEC for acceptance into service, assuming that you were shooting at 100 yards.

Stock 55 - good
Stock 62 - adequate
77 - no bueno. Not enough twist to stabilize.
And, to echo Ed L., military is ok with 2 MOA for the rifle, two MOA for the shooter.
4 MOA out to 500 is about 20”. Likely a hit.

CBD, if it has the 1:7 twist (a lot of 1990s AR-15 makers were following what Colt and the Army were using back then), 62 grain ammo should (in theory) give you the best results.

RI Red, you don't chamber-check/plunk test your semi-auto pistol ammo at the bench? I do so for every 9mm and 45ACP round. Final step in the process before they go into the can. Avoids any resizing or OAL issues.

They make a gauge to see how worn the end of the barrel is. If the barrel starts opening up as you get closer to the muzzle, and if the crown by chance is fucked up, yeah, its going to be a wider group. Some barrels are just born shitty too. You might want to have the barrel checked just for shits and giggles. At least you'll know wtf is up with it. If the barrel is screwed thats easy to deal with. Kinda sucks to have an AR stuck in the land of misfit toys.

Don't forget that the Chinese have traditionally banked on land and precious metals as stores of value for centuries. Given the collapse of the real estate bubble in China, I'd be surprised if a lot of the price increases aren't being driven (at least in part) by Chinese looking for something where they can park cash "just in case."

Ri red,
I always create a dummy round, ( use none reloadable aluminum case for handguns) and use the handgun barrel for a plunk test with the bullet seating. I don't crimp the round until I get the seating oal correct.
Makes setting seating dies again easy if you use several different profiles of bullets. As you simply put the dummy in and set seating again for that profile.
Use tired brass blackened for rifles.
Micrometer seating dies also work.

Fwiw, chrome barrels on ar's are not the most accurate, better now but 2 to 3 mia was pretty typical in the day. Chroming decreases accuracy a bit in return for barrel longevity and rust resistance. Chromed ar barrels are better now. But a chrome moly usually shoots a bit more accurately. Nitrided barrels split the difference.

Those are bore erosion gages. Crown damage usually is a burr or sometimes cleaning rod damage. Both can be corrected by simply counter boring the worn rifling. Easy to lap and correct damaged minor crown damage. Counter boring or shortening barrel for major.

EdL, the chroming of ar barrels were due to going back and forth over standards. But Soviets chromed their barrels so it was viewed as important for the US to do so. Chrome molybdenum barrels do fine if you avoid mag dumps, clean your barrel, and avoid corrosive ammo.

The CMV 4150 5R barrel on the original M110 was probably one of the best I’ve ever used. You’ll find there isn’t a lot of love for the chrome lined in certain circles for all the right reasons.

Stick a piece of rubber into the hole where the primer was. That'll absorb the impact the firing pin gets from the hammer/striker when you squeeze the trigger.

It's what I do for obscure cartridges
Use either pencil eraser rubber or hot glue to fill primer pocket. Hot glue last less than plain ole rubber eraser.

That should work, assuming you have a seating die to replace the bullet. Might be worthwhile to find some kind of nylon rod or something to glue into the primer pocket. The dimpled primer won't give your firing pin much cushion.

Did get to the range but just did some .22 shooting. Bought a cheap aluminum rail for my 10/22 and a very cheap red dot optic. I probably should have spent more on the optic. The rail was a good buy though.
