good one, from the article:

"I feel like it's a little bit like a flickering light bulb. You are in total darkness, and then it will flicker on, and you go like, I can see everything. And then two seconds later, boom, pitch black. If you can make that light bulb stable and shine all the time, clearly that's amazing for humanity.” --DHH

I don't know what percentage of homeless have mental health issues, but I suspect the percentage is rather high.

So perhaps we could reframe this as providing government provided, affordable housing for the homeless.

38 Yes, I have shopping to do today; we're due for some sharp cold starting Sunday evening. One upside to it is that Miss Linda has had to reschedule our Monday trip to the zoo. She gets free passes from somewhere, so the only cost in $ would be gas for my car. But I'm not looking forward to traipsing around the place for three hours even if the weather is good. It's just tiring to stand and move as slowly as a sloth. The concessions are not cheap, either.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 22, 2026 05:23 AM (wzUl9)

39 It's also time to buy the oil and filter for the car's next oil change. But I can wait on that until tomorrow or Saturday, I guess. After my trip to IN, where the Buick performed so well, I thought I might splurge on a big-brand oil. But the car won't know -- and Walmart's own Supertech brand, which is in the engine now, meets the same GM specs and is vastly cheaper.

44 WRT mass layoffs being easier onsite than remote, as I recounted, my wife's friend was downsized from her job a couple of months ago, it was done over a teams call with 10 other people that were being let go.

They even muted and turned off cameras of people that were getting upset.

I thought that was wild but in retrospect, I think that way, though cold, is most efficient and reduces potential physical confrontations.

The '16 Buick has the big engine, a 3.6 L V-6 that pumps out 300 hp. (Not that I've ever come close to using it all.) The manual says to use 5W-30 oil with the Dexos certification. I know there are plenty of solid oils which don't pay for that certification; but it makes for a convenient way to compare the brands.

When I finally move farther north, perhaps I'll go to a 0W-30 to deal with starting in cold weather. But a 5W is good down as far as the -20s, something I don't plan on ever seeing.

Yesterday morning we had a spate of freezing rain, sleet and snow over about 3 hours. You'd have thought it was the "Death Storm." I-65 between Louisville and Elizabethtown, KY was shut down. Numerous spots in the area were the scene of multi-car wrecks, slide-offs and the like. Businesses shuttered before opening. Schools closed.

There was no accumulations of snow or ice. Roads that were wet, became "icy," which was expected.

Death Storm 2026 will certainly kill us all....

At my volunteer job, the owners have okayed a major renovation in our building, which when finished should be a big improvement re: sorting donations and moving merch along.
We are in what was a residence of the nursing home and use the two upstairs wings to sort and prep and then sell everything downstairs.
So, we sort and store things in the former suites, which is a mess, actually. Things get put in the bathrooms and forgotten, the lighting is not great, traffic gets snarled.
This will be better.
Although I am wearing a mask while they work on the ceiling b/c who knows what's up there.

Isaac Asimov stated in a 1986 interview on the Manhattan public access show Conversations with Harold Hudson Channer -- with guest co-host Marilyn vos Savant:

"It's a little humbling to think that, what is most likely to survive of everything I've said... After all, I've published now... I've published now at least 20 million words. I'll have to figure it out, maybe even more. But of all those millions of words that I've published, I am convinced that 100 years from now only 60 of them will survive. The 60 that make up the Three Laws of Robotics."

OTOH, maybe they'll be forgotten by some or many in less than 40 years, sir ...

They they actually assault anyone?

Posted by: no one of any consequence

I always tell people to learn YOUR state's definition of assault, because every state's definition is different. For example, Texas:

Assault
Sec. 22.01. ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:
(3) intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another when the person knows or should reasonably believe that the other will regard the contact as offensive or provocative.

A simple touch is enough for assault. Other states require more.
