ICYMI: Cat really takes a routine shaming hard.

As the weather turns bad, try to be like this dog and just enjoy it.

When they think no one is watching...

A "smart menu."

No relationship is ever completely equal.

Old pups are best pups. More evidence.

Backing down a bully.

Pit bull used for dog fights, then abandoned by a dumpster, is rescued and turns out to be a loving boy.

Similarly, a pittie puppie was literally thrown into a dumpster (while still in its kennel, so it couldn't escape). I'm sure that we all have So Much to Learn from the Solid Citizen who did that.

Someone heard the little guy crying and now he has the best life.

Bears: A National Concern.

10 What a lovely photo of the thatched English cottage, Ace, my love. I love the UK and am glad I saw it before the total invasion of barbarians and woke. I have what I call English gardens, but they are mostly a bunch of David Austin roses and flowering plants that survive on their own. I pretend a lot to live graciously.

I always wonder about thatched roofs. Do they have bugs and mice living in them? Who comes to tend them now that the barbarians invaded? They would burn them, lacking skills.

I am peeved we are not in a winter storm watch. I also did not see ALL YEAR the Northern Lights (and never have). I don't ask for much, just inches of snow in my yard and many feet in the mountains for our water this summer. It's not fair!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ace!

It was neon green, oblong, about the size of a football field and landed silently below us in a field.

Obviously did not report this to my parents or the police.

29 Weather folks say Sunday, Monday, Tuesday will be our worst days coming up. Snow, lce, freezing rain are on the menu. Low temperatures teens and single digits. Do not get out unless it's a have to situation. Power outage possible.
I got out today to get together more supplies. And some back up kerosene for heat if it comes to that. But I do have plenty of propane for my heater. Ice on the power lines is my main worry. So we will see what happens. Everyone going through this be careful and best of luck. Will try to post if I can.

49 I insulated the valve of the water line at the road today. The valve and the line itself are only 12 inches down into the dirt. The Magic 8 Ball prognosticators are currently saying we'll get down to single digits so we should be okay there. The real problem is if we get as much ice as is predicted. Our entire community is in a heavily wooded area with most of our power lines above ground.

One thing is for certain - we'll find out soon enough.

Most of my local taxes are used to preserve open space - which keeps the rural flavor of the township in a sea of overly dense corporate parks and new 'luxury' apartment complexes. The downside is public works are...lacking. Meh, I have a whole house generator, plenty of booze and the better part of a cord of firewood.

I asked my son to pull up the photo of the attendees at the 1927 Solvay Conference at our Cub Scout den meeting this week. Our conversation (these were third and fourth graders) had steered over to Marie Curie.

The kids picked out Marie and Albert Einstein in the picture, of course. I told them that every person in that picture played either major or substantial roles in advancing chemistry and physics one hundred years ago and that, at some point, they will become familiar with more of them.

This got me to asking myself why are there not pictures of such assemblies of notable and great scientists today? Have we lost the capability to pose simple questions whose answers reveal profound i sights into nature? Is it possible that too many scientists today have been sent off to pursue will-o-the-wisps such as My String-a-Ling Theory or Klimate Katastrophe? And who funds such wasted pursuits? The world wonders.

Have we lost the capability to pose simple questions whose answers reveal profound i sights into nature? I've been doomscrolling the GFS and Euro model runs for the past two days. It's "fun" watching them evolve. I'm pulling for the Euro now. Was pulling for GFS, but it evolved into mostly freezing rain over me("ZR" in the lingo).

I used to hear my late cousin and the other weather guys go about "warm noses". Well, I see exactly what that it with those model run point sounding graphs (skew-T logP, if interested) you can generate. A warm nose (basically a mid level layer of air above freezing) is what determines sleet or ZR. To big a nose, and it's ZR.

On the Skew-T it looks exactly a nose from a side profile.

163 One overlooked item to keep on hand is a Coleman lantern, and a supply of mantles.

They work just fine on regular gasoline (don’t store them with car gas for long periods) and put out a nice amount of heat. Very useful for keeping a crawlspace warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing. They don’t give off objectionable odors, surprisingly. Ventilation is necessary but they are not going to kill anybody with CO.

2 burner stoves, same thing. Work fine with automotive gasoline. No collector value, these are almost free for the asking. They will save your ass in a power outage or emergency.

169 Rep Comer has sent how many people to jail? How many has he held accountable? He’s a waste of skin! If it wasn’t for a 23 year old YouTuber, fraud wouldn’t even be in the news. Without a congresswoman like Harriet Hageman and congressman Gill who knows if any relevant legal questions would’ve been asked in another useless congressional hearing.

C&E News is doing some of that, with its turn into People Magazine of the woke chemists. ACS in general does not.

I think the Gordon Conferences have pictures as well.

But todays' media is silent on real science. And only features the pseudo scientists.

That Solvay picture is a famous one.
Posted by: NaCly Dog

I attended two or three Gordon Conferences of the Applications of Multivariate Statistics in Chemistry in the late '90s. I guess there were group pictures, but I am hard pressed to remember where I might have them.

I ditched the American Chemical Society in the mid Oughts after having been a member for over thirty years. There was a particularly nasty and controlling Editor-in-Chief of C&E News named Rudy Baum who issued and enforced a diktat that there would be absolutely NO DISCUSSION in its pages about alternate theories to Anthropogenic Global Warning. He acted like a real dick about it.

Your membership did not lapse by not paying dues, you had to write a letter of resignation to the President of the ACS. I wrote that (Baum) having declared alternatives to AGW as being off limits, I would no longer be a member of an ascientific and duplicitous body. Ta-ta!

Here's the NWS regional office map:
https://is.gd/EtsNSW

Go the office page for your area there, and you can see what all they say. The maddening thing is all the regional websites look very similar but yet can be very different. It's sort of a national template, but each office does its own thing. I'm use to GSP, but I go to some other region, and nothing is where I think it is.

Anyway, get a point local forecast map up and you can see exactly what they forecasting for temp/DP, rain/snow/sleet/ice accumulation.

Anti-freeze is Your Friend. More properly called “Coolant”, a lot of people think they don’t need it. They are wrong. Anyway, A 50/50 solution mixed with water is good to -30°F below zero, easy.

I read somewhere that engine rebuilders ordinarily don’t want anything to do with “southern” engine blocks for this reason. Rust city.

Engine overheats - remove T-stat. Now the engine never even reaches normal temperature. If it no longer overheats, now it’s sludge city.

Remember a half inch of ice adds 500 pounds of weight to a single span of a power line. Through the day tomorrow freezing rain is looking likely at this point. Also, had the worst ice storm I've ever seen there. My car had a headbolt heater, so no prob, but other folks' cars were frozen shut and couldn't move.

I prefer living here, where we are reasonable about winter. We had 22 inches of snow overnight last week, but the snowblower worked fine and off we went. Winter happens. Cope or don't.

Yes, and no. If you continue to burn wood fires, the smoke keeps the pests at bay. If not, you have to treat it routinely. And there are still thatchers in the UK. They are overbooked by a year, last I heard. Lots of YouScrewb vids on thatchers plying their trade.

Years ago my folks had a place outside or West Palm Beach. It was in one of those carved out of Florida glades areas with canals all over to drain the water. Condo backed right up to one of the canals and the grass sloped right down to the canal, no wall.

I took the dogs out for a morning pee break one morning when I was visiting and one my mom's Jacks froze a couple feet from the canal and was barking its ass off. About 10 feet away in the water were two eyeballs just above the surface.

Grabbed the little land gator and took the other dogs and went inside and called the number they tell you to call when a fucking alligator is in your backyard. Guys were there in a blink and took a big ass gator like they were catching a mouse. They drop them off in the swamp a few miles away. A swamp connected to the canals.

269 The Southern part of the country will get a bad winter maybe once in 20 years. When temperatures fall into single digits for days it's not good. We are just not use to it. Our states do not put a lot of money into equipment to deal with bad winters because we get so few of them. I know it seems kinda funny to people in the north but we have to be careful when this crap hits. It's not like we haven't been through it before, we just dread going through it again. So we stress the fact we have to prepare and be careful.

My entire county has only 6 trucks that can be fitted with snowplows and that is for over 1,000 miles of roads. Most of them are narrow and full of curves up and down mountain sides. They ice quickly and are treacherous with any amount of snow or ice. With any amt of snow or ice at all, they close the schools county wide.

To be fair though, last year we had more school closure days on account of bear sightings than that of snow days.

My very elderly mother's house now has a generator, as does my brother. So I guess they will be ok if trees fall all around on the farm.

Oh, wait: I am fascinated by that. Always have been.

It's just surprising that there are so many of these videos. Is it a current trend or something?

321 sometimes the fittings will break instead of the pex, so it is good to keep the tap dripping.

I definitely learned my lesson. The bike had been in storage for the winter and I was anxious to ride again.

324 We're supposed to be getting a foot of snow. I find it hard to believe, but the radar looks convincing. What kills me is that nowhere in the hour by hour forecast does it say 100 percent chance of snow. It's a range of 35-95%, over 36 hours, and yet they say it'll add up to a foot.

No worries, I've got 10 cases of diet redbull, 5 cases of Dos Equis Amber for Thor, and plenty of meat. I dont mind losing power in the Winter, because you can still keep food cold, and there are any number of ways to keep warm. 😁
My only complaint is having to keep water dripping, and that's just because I worry about the well going dry.
Losing power in the Summer is far worse.

325 Disappointed to see Arizona added to the list of states with crazies in charge. AG Kris Mayes reminds citizens that Arizona is a "stand your ground" state, so it's a "recipe for disaster"when masked ICE agents go out with little or no identification.

She's just sayin'.

Yes Ma'am. If the power goes out in winter, we have a woodstove for warmth. Gas stove for food. Well bucket for water. If power goes out in summer, we have food and water, but it's 100 degrees in the house. That sucks.
