In 1927, an advertising agency hired Charles Sheeler to photograph the Ford Motor Company’s new River Rouge plant, a vast complex ten miles outside Detroit, Michigan. Covering 2,000 acres and employing 75,000 people, River Rouge was the world’s largest factory and the first to fully manufacture cars on site. After finishing the photography assignment, Sheeler produced a series of paintings of the factory complex, including River Rouge Plant.

Why does imbalance bother me so much? The water and building in the left foreground look fairly realistic, but the background buildings look cartoonish to me. The perceived mismatch takes me right out of possible enjoyment of the piece. *sigh*

I can admire the talent to accurately capture the lines of the buildings, the shadows, even the reflections in the river. But there is no soul. It feels empty and sterile. Even the water is barely moving judging by how little distortion is in the reflection. Can't imagine where it could be displayed except, maybe, in the hallway of the business.

. . . he realized that he would not be able to make a living with Modernist painting. Instead, he took up commercial photography, focusing particularly on architectural subjects. He was a self-taught photographer, learning his trade on a five dollar Brownie. Early in his career, he was dramatically impacted by the death of his close friend Morton Livingston Schamberg in the influenza epidemic of 1918. Schamberg's painting had focused heavily on machinery and technology, a theme which would come to feature prominently in Sheeler's own work.

Researchers say Russian government hackers were behind attempted Poland power outage A failed December effort to bring down parts of Poland’s energy grid was the work of Russian government hackers known for causing past energy disruptions, according to a security research firm that investigated the incident. Last week, Polish Energy Minister Milosz Motyka told reporters that the attempted cyberattack on December 29 and 30 saw hackers targeting two heat and power plants, as well as trying to disrupt the communication links between renewable installations, such as wind turbines and power distribution operators. Motyka called the incident the “strongest attack” on Poland’s energy infrastructure in years, with the Polish government blaming Moscow for the attempt. Local media reported that the attacks could have knocked out heat and power for at least half a million homes across the country. https://is.gd/6P3tPa Posted by: Archimedes at January 26, 2026 09:54 AM (Riz8t) 110

Seem to recall at peak production they were cranking out a couple dozen B-24s every day or every hour or whatever. At the time River Rouge was the largest or longest assembly line operation in the world. Something like 26,000 Army Air Force personnel were killed, the odds were not good on bombing missions. Not as well known, something like 10,000 planes and personnel were killed in the US, just in training. What we are seeing in Minneapolis is the opening kinetic battle between the leftist "feminine" power and the American "masculine" power.
Trump only has to stay in to win. Their power is indirect, coercive, deception, etc. Feminine power can never defeat masculine face-to-face. That's one of the reasons they hate Trump so much--all of their usual tactics and ploys just ... don't work. "you're mean, shame, people hate you!" But, they still work on others. Bed-wetting pussies like Errock Errorickson. Also, this is a war of attrition. Trump is grinding away their voters and their money. 170 “The Arsenal of Democracy”
They would send guys up, and if you made it back in one piece, why, you’re suitable for further training! Posted by: Common Tater at January 26, 2026 10:05 AM Those people loved America. On another forum someone was complaining they were offered $50 for a silver dollar.
Bullion coins are .999 ; US coinage is 90 per cent. Worn out silver dollars - “slicks” have very little to no numismatic value. They will he purchased at a discount to spot price. Not that much, however. Dealers don’t want to get stuck if the price declines, the refineries are backed up. Silver dollars in better condition don’t get sent for melting. In fact they should trade at a slight premium over spot because they are well over 100 years old. Know what you have, and what they should trade for. .999 gold or silver bullion coins should be bought and sold within 2 or 3 percent of the spot price. That’s his profit. They don’t care whether the price is going up or down. They make money on the spread. Posted by: Common Tater at January 26, 2026 10:14 AM (uQjsv) 227

From the link in #229.
It is well known that ICE and the Border Patrol are leery of informing Minneapolis police of their whereabouts now because every time they do, somebody in the Department leaks the information. A Minneapolis City Councilwoman is organizing members of the mob and administering a Signal channel directing protesters. Other councilmembers are participating in the disruption of law enforcement efforts. Hennepin County prosecutors are participating in felonious protests. And the chaos is not organic. It is well-funded, well-planned, and is the product of a coordination between outside activists (many of whom get government funding) and government officials. Recent developments in China overshadow everything else in the news. Xi has purged the #2 man (in addition to every other to military man, save one) in a replay of what Mao did towards the end of his life. Artists associated with the movement fused a planar geometry developed from European Cubism with an interest in uniquely American subjects, often celebrating industry and a Machine Age aesthetic. --- This painting also looks a bit like the old Inland Fisher Guide plant, West Trenton, NJ The Inland Fisher Guide Plant was a General Motors facility located in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, New Jersey, that opened in 1938 as one of its most modern plants and was operated by the firm for 60 years. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at January 26, 2026 10:50 AM (ExV1e) --- Not really. The argument for Nazis being "right" is that they weren't doctrinaire Marxists. Their doctrine resisted the idea that goal of socialist takeover was to create government-less communes worldwide. Thus they did not follow Marx's theory of History, and they impeded the step to the "End of History". All that is true, but you're a Marxist if you claim that fascist are "on the right". A doctrinaire Marxist affirms that a really oppressive government has to come in, controlling all production, but, as above, it has to strip people down to prepare for the world without government. You see, all socialisms have been national, in practice. Some of them have kinda-sorta yearned for a state-less world, and others don't see any need further than total "collective" power. What they do really can't be called "thinking" anymore. It's an entirely different process, with entirely different algorithms for going from one thing to another and judging validity. Posted by: I used to have a different nic I did a little bit of investigation (not dealing with law enforcement) with/for the gov. years ago and it often involved filming and weights/measurements, but such analysis (time, distance, etc.) would need to go to very specialized individuals, contractors for final analysis and report in matters of great importance such as severe injuries or illnesses and/or deaths. Yes, just seconds might pass when it comes to doing the job of ICE agent. (Any law enforcement.) What a burden. But that's the desired outcome - run out Greg Bovino and his groups, and stop others from applying for those positions with he government. 387 Any science types here that could articulate the basic stumbling block with fusion reactors. Speak as if you were talking to a child.
Posted by: tubal at January 26, 2026 10:47 AM (pDt9x) The promise is the danger: such big energy has to be contained, to be used Earthside. But then the containment itself takes energy, since we're talking magnetic bottles for plasma that would destroy any material. Theoretically, if you could use the energy created to power its own containment... To put the problem in perspective, the Sun is a fusion reactor. The pressure from all immense gravity of its large mass takes hydrogen and fuses it into helium, which generates immense amounts of energy, and... I forget what triggers the fission reaction that splits it back into hydrogen, but that happens too. (Nothing is free, the energy has to come from somewhere, so IIRC some small mass is lost in subatomic particles.) So there's both reactions in the Sun, but it's the fusion that's the really big deal; and the same numbers that get captains of industry licking their lips also mean you're basically trying to control the energy of a star, and make it safe to be on the same planet as. > Temperature.
Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at January 26, 2026 10:52 AM (g8Ew Also pressure and time... the so-called "triple product". To some degree these can be played off against each other. The problem is that generating the necessary conditions of temperature, pressure, and time, *thus far* requires more energy input than you get out. We know that that fusion power isn't impossible because we have both hydrogen bombs and the sun that demonstrate otherwise. It's just very difficult to do, in a controlled way, with the equipment than we Mere Mortals have developed to date. I've seen proposals to use hydrogen bombs as a sort of hybrid geothermal system. You drill a really deep hole, along with conduits (or rock fractures) so you can put water down and get steam back out. Then you set off a hydrogen bomb at the bottom of the hole. When things start to cool off, you chuck another bomb down the hole. Lather, rinse, repeat. There are obviously some practical issues here (how do you keep the hole open or rapidly regenerate it, given that you're setting off fusion bombs at the bottom), but it would work. Hitler himself wrote that traditional, ethnic based bigotry against the Jews was not going to work. So he formulated a "Scientific antisemitism" and taught that the anti-natural behavior of Jews was the problem.
Just one example: other nations had banded together in consolidated nations to compete for supremacy of "race". The Jews, on the other hand *seemed* happy to live among the other nations. Then he mixed back in Messianic prophesies of the Messiah ruling all nations, and decided that this dream they had of ruling all nations in that way was a summit of anti-naturalism. So even his hatred of the Jews was not *traditional*, although it could have been propagated by older hatreds just as equally. Posted by: Axeman at January 26, 2026 11:08 AM (krQz2) 481
352 Reportedly - kids were separated, by force, from parents for hours...
Posted by: man at January 26, 2026 10:37 AM (XuXeR) That certainly changes things, but it's up to the parents there to make the calculation if their kid is really in danger, or if it's just a situational nuisance. If the kid is separated, but still with trusted other members of their community, they would be a lot less likely to consider it an emergency I suppose. Now, i'm not saying those shitheads didn't *deserve* a bloodbath, mind you. I'm just venting that it's not fair to think these people were pussies and cowards just because they didn't go full Brawl in Cell Block 99 on said shitheads. My catharsis is not their liability. They don’t want to hear that Mussolini and Goebbels were Marxists. Marxist that became a Nazi because Marxism didn’t hate Jews enough or a Fascist because Marxism wasn’t aggressive enough. Posted by: Opinion fact at January 26, 2026 11:00 AM (KDPiq) --- Gentile is the Italian philosopher that worked with Mussolini to formulate fascism. Gentile said that fascism is necessarily socialist. Now, keep in mind Marx's embrace of socialism was only as a way to communism, literally living in non-governed communes. And as the Scottish industrialist Robert Owen coined the term "socialism" for what he implemented at his commune in upstate NY, "socialism" is not a subset of Marxism. But I perceive that the fundamental difference between fascism and Marxism, is that Marxism believes in a "withering away of the state" and fascism is fully invested in the state and sees no reason for this--or possibly likelihood. Perhaps, if you specify production of each and every component on that site. The assembly distinction belongs to the Studebaker South Bend plant, remodeled extensively in 1921-22 out of the previous largest wagon works, ironically to accept transfer of car-building from their Detroit facility, which had begun as Henry Ford's first Model T plant, on Piquette Avenue.
