A happy ending came for 12-year-old Ryan “RJ” Davis, who was recently found safe in Oklahoma thanks to the efforts of the United Cajun Navy. Nine days after being reported missing by his mother and stepfather, RJ was found safe indoors, unharmed, and warmly embraced by his rescuers. The county has prepared all snow removal/management equipment for the expected storm:

The models for here are too far out to truly get worried but right now, they are calling for at least 10 inches of snow. Honestly, if that happens, we'll be cut off from the rest of the country until May or so.

personally, i found that making a typo while punching a card made me mess up the next two or three cards as well.

Mixed emotions about that story. Glad he's okay, of course.
At not quite that boy's age, I "ran away" for an hour or so one day. I was frustrated by something, I forget what exactly, but I was teased and tormented frequently by siblings, and didn't get a lot of help from parents. Seemed like nobody understood.
I didn't go far, and came back fairly soon. Got the belt. Never ran away again, with that kind of welcome-back.
You don't know your family dynamic is not healthy when you're growing up in it; you just think it's all like that. Even when you have Leave It To Beaver for contrast.

I do. I took a Fortran course at The Ohio State University back in the day. One compiler error meant a helluva lot of searching through the deck, and if you had to make little piles of cards to find the error(s), then you had better put the new, corrected cards in the right pile and then restack the piles in the correct order.

The whole town (and the airport) are built on a river delta island composed of peat and sand, fully water-saturated. When the next big earthquake hits, all that stuff will become fluid, and buildings will simply topple over, or sink into the muck. That land was once incredibly productive farmland. Damned shame to see it covered by condos full of foreigners. Considering there is a vast amount of hilly, but accessible land in the North Shore mountains and around the coastline of Indian Arm. Burrard Inlet carries on for 30 miles past Vancouver up the branch inlet called Indian Arm, and nearly all of it is uninhabited.

Our classes were in PL/I. The language of the future! There was one whole session on Fortran just in case we had to handle legacy code. I’m not even sure if we had to do even one exercise in it, although I vaguely recall we did.

Another poster wrote that maybe the electrical issue is a cover story for something worse at the destination...since I would expect AF1 to land at first available opportunity if ANY sign of mechanical or electrical malfunction. But I guess they're transferring to other plane and continuing on.

There are a huge number of "winter visitors" here in the Central Valley of Arizona. Mile after mile of RV parks, or mobile home parks, mostly seasonally occupied. Many from snowbelt States, but plenty from Canada, too.
BTW, I think Blue Oyster Cult is going to appear at one of the big Indian casinos next month. There is a spare room here if that interests you. And there is a big Harley dealer about 8 blocks from here.

My house in Alberta? I turn off the well pump, and house water pressure system, leave the gas furnace on low heat, and have a 300 watt electric fan heater in the basement, set to come on if the temperature drops below 50 or so. And a neighbor stops in twice a week to feed the cat, who in turn catches mices.

Thats so damn tempting. Maybe I can steal some Death Star plans and keep us, uh...occupied. lol I need to get this '56 panhead I'm building done before I could go anywhere. Its a slow grind. Every damn thing we need seems to be back ordered. There has to be a dozen things we can't get. It should have been done by now. I went to one of the other shops over the weekend and built a motor that we took apart in november, so thats done. If it wasn't for this frigging panhead I would have had a few weeks of nothing major to do.

To "summerize" the place here in AJ, I pour a little baby oil into the toilet bowls, to stop the water from evaporating out of them, and allwoing sewer gases to come up through the traps. Have the water turned off at the meter, and shut off most breakers in the panel.

AF1 sure isn't in the air all the time, either. If an airline owns a 747, it's not making money on the ground. So they fly those planes until the wings fall off. An airliner 747 probably gets more airframe hours on it in one year than AF1 has had since it was built.

That's one of my concerns now that we're free to come and go as we please - leaving the house for an extended period of time. I'd like to shut the water off but the landscaping needs to be watered.

I agree, it is magical. A 500 gallon buried propane tank is pretty sweet too, I betcha.
Have a wall tent and kni-co stove. The flip vent lets a little bit of the flames & light dance on the walls of the tent, it’s peaceful and contemplative.
When that fucker burns down though, and goes out, it starts ticking and gets cold in the tent almost instantly. LOL
I noticed old school Perfection kerosene wick heaters project a pleasing light pattern on the ceiling.

If it's the guy I remember reading about, his parachute burned, and he fell into a pine forest in Bavaria, heavilly loaded with snow. He hit the upper branches of a pine tree, and sort of filtered down through it, breaking his fall. Still suffered some broken bones.

Hitting the rear stabilizer, getting munched by other planes in the formation wasn’t unusual. One B-17 ended up with just the headless torso of a guy from another plane on the navigators desk. They figured out who it was eventually from laundry marks on the clothes.
I still can’t figure out how those guys got up in those planes over and over. Completely crazy.

I recall when we had our beloved Hound neutered. He was a stray and would not come into the house. He would not get in the car. He had been abused and was terrified.
We were finally able to get him to the vet for surgery. He came home wobbly. Hubby picked him up and carried him into the house. We and our cats sat around him that night and comforted him in the living room.

They have the wood splitter from Hell in the Reynolds Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Some farmer took an old steel tractor wheel, and welded a big-ass wedge to the rim of it. Wheel was mounted in a frame, with a very solid anvil, that had a gap for the wedge to pass through. Wheel was driven by a flat belt from the side PTO on an old tractor. It just went round and round constantly. User would place an end of the log on the anvil, and tip it into the patch of the wedge as it came around. Sounds like a great way to lose fingers or a whole arm.

I remember when my brother's wife brought home a cat. She's the kind that would give an aspirin a headache. The cat was home about 3 days and off it went. It got fixed, and also some silly lion cut and god knows what else. Pretty much the standard design nowadays. 27 tons of pressure will do a number on a finger. Ask me how I know. They used to make auger type splitters but those had safety issues. Neighbor, years ago had one that he ran off his tractor PTO. A strap from his bibs got caught by the auger and pulled him into the auger. He lost his leg.

My card story - in '69, I wrote a Fortran program to calculate LCR values for an equalizer network for differing lengths of coax, all on cards. The deck was about 7 inches.
15 years and two companies later, at a conference, I run into my old boss, who tells me that they got an order for more of that product, they dug out the cards, had some contract company run them through a reader onto an 8" floppy, and it worked fine on Fortran77.

A chunk of the big players holdings are paper. They're having a harder time moving it because buyers want physical silver now. The supply squeeze isn't going away anytime soon. There was a rumor that Musk's level of concern has him looking at investing in the production end.

I haven't seen The Producers, but I saw Bugsy. Mr. Siegel sold the same shares to multiple people never dreaming he would not be able to pyramid it back to them. (Actually, that's not a pyramid scheme, but it's some sort of scheme.)

Hmm. If I understand the other science correctly, areas over the deep sea don't have that many fish at one time since there's not much to eat and nowhere to hide. The Sargassum Belt may provide such a place, but that's speculation on my part based upon my imperfect interpretation of other things that I have read.
