Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 21, 2026 [TRex]

20260121-bridge.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

Official 2026 Wednesday ONT Prediction Challenge Update

14 contestants submitted guesses for the numbers challenge.
27 contestants submitted guesses for the events challenge.

Perhaps we will do a mid-year status update.

Thank you for playing!

Random trivia - IKEA estimates that on average, it sells one Billy bookcase every five seconds. Other than Perfessor Squirrel and the book thread participants, I'm impressed that so many people have so many books that they need shelves to store them in an easily accessible manner. (BTW, the interweb says today is Squirrel Appreciation Day. Perfessor - we appreciate you!)

The Billy bookcase was named after an IKEA advertising manager,Billy Likjedhal. It was first developed by IKEA in the 1970s.

20260120-billy-bookcase-white1.jpg

IKEA is an acronym. It stands for Ingvar (founder's first name), Kamprad (founder's surname), Elmtaryd (his family's farm) and Agunnaryd (the village in Smaland where he grew up).

Finnish finger wrestler breaks deadlift record by hoisting over 330 lbs with middle digit

20260121-Fingerpulling.jpg

On 31 December, the Finnish strongman [Juha Andersson] challenged the popular record for the heaviest deadlift with one finger, a title which has changed hands (or fingers) three times within 2025 alone. Yet Juha was more than confident that he could take the crown due to his championship background in competitive finger pulling, and on the last day of the year, the ultimate showdown began to see who has the toughest middle digit in the world.

And turns out, Juha was right - because on his second attempt, he easily yanked 336.42 lbs (152.60 kg) off the ground with just one finger, narrowly beating Egmond Molina's (Aruba) best of 334 lbs (151.5 kg) from four months prior.

"Competitive finger pulling"? Apparently so. In Germany it's called "fingerhakeln" and the Finnish version is named "sormikoukku."

Cue the "pull my finger" fart jokes (for the record, fart jokes are still funny).

The Wednesday ONT respects the Horde enough not to waste precious virtual ink on anything said by Gavin Newsom. However, an exception must be made this one time for his comments from Davos:

This is diplomacy with Donald Trump. He's a T-Rex. You mate with him, or he devours you, one or the other. The Europeans could be (devoured) if they continue down this path and process. They need to stand tall, stand firm, stand united.

Others can debate the geopolitics but if you had "mating with a T-Rex" on your political bingo card for 2026, congratulations! I look forward to other dinosaur references in the vocabulary of public policy.

Maine factory that makes Lincoln Logs to close, setting off frantic search for new manufacturer

20260122-Logs.jpg

Lincoln Logs are among a handful of classic toys made in the USA with American trees, but that's likely to change in a matter of weeks.

Pride Manufacturing - the Maine factory that makes Lincoln Logs and other wood products - is closing in April after losing its biggest contract, to make cigar tips for another company.

That leaves toymaker Basic Fun scrambling to find a new factory to manufacture the century-old brand that was founded by Frank Lloyd Wright's son, John, and has been a staple in families' toy chests for decades.

Production of the $10 million brand will likely move overseas and cost consumers about 10% more, according to Jay Foreman, chief executive of Boca Raton, Fla.- based Basic Fun.

Basic Fun, which makes other classic toys - including Lite Brite, Care Bears and Tonka Trucks - has initiated a 45-day search for a US supplier but it is also preparing a back-up plan in China to make sure it can produce enough toys for the holidays, Foreman said.

The plastic pieces that come with Lincoln Log sets - including roofs and other accessories like farm animals and farmers - are made in China. They are shipped in bulk to the US and packed into the boxes and tins of wood parts that were made by Pride Manufacturing.

The Burnham, Maine, factory made the sets starting in 2014. "After our largest customer made the decision to relocate their sourcing for cigar tips, our highest volume product, the facility became financially unviable," the firm said in a statement.

Because some of you are likely more interested in the cigar angle to this story:

The customer, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, is John Middleton, a downmarket cigar maker and subsidiary of tobacco conglomerate Altria Company.

Altria did not immediately respond to a request for comment about about why it yanked its business from Pride, which is the only cigar tip operation in the US, according to sources.

The tips are made from birch wood and are sold as part of John Middleton's Black and Mild cigars, which come with FDA-approved flavored wood tips.

Some FYI:
'One feature of Tyrannosaurus rex that everyone makes fun of is its arms, which seem disproportionately tiny compared to the rest of its massive body. T. rex's arms were over three feet long, however, and may have been capable of bench pressing 400 pounds each. In any event, T. rex didn't have the smallest arm-to-body ratio among carnivorous dinosaurs; that was the Carnotaurus, whose arms looked like tiny nubs.'

38 This fag needs to be called out every.single.time.

He just did this:

Deranged leftist activists illegally invaded a church service, interrupting worship and shutting down the church because the pastor has alleged ties to ICE. Don Lemon was there, livestreaming his participation in the event too. “This is what the First Amendment is about, the freedom to protest,” Don Lemon said as he and his comrades harassed families with children. “I’m sure people here don’t like it, but protests are not comfortable.”

Human Events’ Jack Posobiec confronted Newsom about the incident at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and he just claimed to have “literally” no idea what Posobiec was talking about.

“It’s funny. Somebody mentioned Don Lemon and Trump the other day, and so I have no idea what that’s about,” Newsom said, nodding his head and shrugging his shoulders.

“Don Lemon? Into a church?” he continued, with a (fake) embarrassed chuckle.

88 Love the ONT! Being from MS, around Vicksburg way, love that song. Saw Mountain for my very first concert in '71 and the song obviously brought down the house.

The only time I saw the MS River in Memphis I harfed, one of my 3 harfings from booze. This time my introduction to te-kill-ya. No thanks! Crazy story I may have told here.

Love the map of the weather. I know y'all don't need snow but we do out in the mountains of the West, so blow it back here. I'll take the very cold temps, too.

I had very good news today, after dreading this appt for 2mo (cardiologist). My fainting in November is apparently ye olde syncope of 4yrs ago and not cardiac related. I read the tests, 1/3 of brain thought it would be ok; 1/3 of brain thought more tests and stress to maybe be ok. One third of my brain never thought the PA would tell me I don't have to see her again unless I have problems! Incredibly thankful to God that all is well. I will continue to be good and lose weight.

I also love Tina Turner! By this summer my legs are going to look like hers. They aren't bad, but I want that muscle. Won't be dancing in heels, however. She was amazing! Sang right through her cardio workouts!

90 The reason why Rosie is moving back are simple, in Ireland she's literally nobody, no one knows who she is, no one recognizes her, nobody cares.

It's like that story Kevin Bacon told about him donning a professional disguise so he could go out and not be recognized and after going out and mixing with regular people and just being one of the crowd, he said it sucked and he never did it again.

Yep! Many don't know that Greenville is famous for their hot tamales. There's even a festival. The late writer (yeah, a liberal woman) was from there and I do like her books about the Delta.

I had a chance to see BB King at a little dive there in HS. Told the guy no. Mainly because I didn't know him and also, sadly, was not into BB King. Plus my parents would not have let me go that far anyway. I wish I had now.

I love the blues, thanks to my NY husband guitarist (hobby, not a pro). My favorite song is this one by Alvin Lee that I heard with him. Love that so many Brits like Eric Clapton came to the MS Delta to learn the blues.

I love the melody and lyrics of this song...thankfully never had to feel these blues personally. Well, the first time my bf/husband broke up with me in college for no reason I was blue. The second time I was irritated. The third time I was whatever. He learned a lesson, however. What a Moron!

I’m in Boerne until tomorrow, when I’m headed back home to Round Rock (just north of Austin). I was wandering around downtown Boerne this morning and passed a Spec’s. Stopped in, and they had a whole bunch of a Texas gin I really like that’s gone out of business. It was on discontinued pricing, too, so I am well-stocked for martinis and bee’s knees for the duration.

Probably for the rest of my life given how slowly I go through gin.

‘No other option’: inside the refugee camp for trans Americans fleeing Trump

It turns out that the Dutch don't take asylum claims from "Trans-Americans" very seriously.

These people are absolutely batshit insane. This is what you get when instead of treating a psychiatric disorder as such you chop up their genitals and pump them full of artificial wrong-sex hormones. This is so psychotically fucked up it beggars belief.

253 When my niece was two or so, she had a doll that she named Sally, but that was also an alter ego she made up about herself. Her real name is Marlena, and my SIL and BIL filed a claim for some injury Marlena had at home. I don't remember what it was. Anyway an insurance adjuster came to their house to verify, and when the adjuster lady asked Marlena "What is your name, little girl", Marlena replied, "Sally".

266 My daughter never, ever, played with dolls unless you count the WWF wrestlers. She was the very first girl to play Little League in the County, could throw and hit age 2. When she hit puberty she played softball with the other girls. When she was 17, she was outside the high school waiting for a ride, and a boy in the school said, Hi, remember me? My daughter said, yeah, Odom, right? He said "Yeah, you struck me out in Little League".

I haven't listened to most of his music...but I'll bet my husband has. Fantastic guitarist.

I think it's interesting that so many from the UK would come to meet and play with BB King deep in the MS Delta: Eric Clapton, Ringo, and Steve Winwood, etc.

It's definitely another universe of poverty and soul food and good people. I only rode through once on a very bad Greyhound bus nightmare (with a hangover) from that fateful Memphis trip.

I forgot the late (liberal) author who wrote about the MS Delta from Greenville when I posted above:

Julia Reed.
Very witty and an entertaining writer. Used to have columns in Newsweek, interviewed the famous hoi polloi, and wrote of the Delta and NOLA. I liked the books, anyway, and have a cookbook she wrote.
