Sailors indeed eat the livers and hearts of the penguins, which are exceedingly palatable, but the black flesh of the body is rank and oily, and has rather a perfumed taste. Around here, a couple of the counties use what they call AmbuBus which is a multi-patient transport bus to help stranded motorists in large pileups. Drivers with disabled vehicles are moved to safer locations like Convention Centers or churches as part of the county's Emergency Operations Plan. Since we have had multiple I40 closures due to shitty driving on snow this year already, the bus is getting quite a workout.

You can see them get pissed and pass me, and then I laugh and say "See you in the ditch soon." Happens quite often. I've seen two pileups up close. The first one was in front of me, I knew the stretch of highway and was tapping the brakes, clearing my tail, and easing down my speed when it happened and cars started bouncing all over the place. I was unscathed, the cars behind me had room to stop (also I was forcing them to slow down). The other one was a pickup truck acting immortal losing it, hitting the guardrail and doing a donut right on the interstate and I just held it steady and eased down, passing right by the carnage. Flights over the poles may need to be rerouted tonight, or fly at lower altitudes (requiring more fuel). That's because, for the first time since 2003, an S4 solar radiation storm is ongoing! Solar particles and protons accelerated by an approaching magnetic shockwave (CME) are bombarding Earth. The more of those energized particles, the deeper into our upper atmosphere they can burrow. Passengers and crew on polar flights may receive elevated doses of ionizing radiation, which can increase long-term health risks (including cancer). This is also causing a high frequency shortwave radio blackout, which may pose some navigational challenges. The same high-energy particles can cause problems for satellites Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at January 19, 2026 09:31 PM (zNcSj) 260

I recently experienced a white knuckle drive in the shining daylight. Sunny, but slight rain, no snow, but then the temperature dropped from 38 to 30 in the shade. Road turned into a complete sheet of clear ice. Slowed down to 55 and as I drove thru the canyon there were 5 cars and 3 trailers in the ditch. No EMTs just tow trucks.

The vid of the giant bear squeezing out the basement window last week was hilarious. I guess he immediately went looking for another basement.

In high school a bunch of us were heading to NH for a ski weekend. My buddy and I get assigned to stop for booze because his brother had lent us his van conversion. Great van, all tricked out for camping and partying but not so great in the snow and ice.
We were cutting across the Kancamagus Highway when it started coming down and the snow was we enough to freeze the road. Everyone slowed down and then just stopped. Driving was too dangerous. And then we remembered we were in a van with a kick ass stereo and a shit load booze. So opened up the side door, cranked the tunes and threw a party until the road thawed. We showed up at the house we rented with considerably less booze than we started with. Posted by: JackStraw at January 19, 2026 09:33 PM (viF8m) 265

Yeah, those propane cartridge stoves are what all the kids use. Coleman fuel is practically extinct now, and approaching $16 to $20 a gallon now, if you can find it.

All of them run on car gas, actually. I’ve used nothing but car gas in the lanterns and 2 burner colemans and the Svea constantly for years now. Eventually, have to clean the generator of tar. Takes gallons and gallons.
The advantage of Coleman fuel (Naptha) is that it does not sour or spoil. I’ve found stoves with 20 or 30 year old Coleman fuel in them and works perfectly. Stand by or emergency use. Car gas is stinky and smelly and sooty in handling however. Posted by: Common Tater at January 19, 2026 09:43 PM (aRbAR) 276

Invoking the Insurrection Act would have one highly beneficial option - using hunter killer teams means and methods used in Iraq and Afghanistan to apprehend these domestic terrorists. Basically the same methods used to get Bin Laden and Maduro. But much easier due to unrestricted movement of the hit teams. Just roll up close, set up sniper overwatch, make a new door with explosives, if anybody is not already on the floor put a few rounds into them, move on to the next room until all cleared. If anyone survived cuff and stuff. Bag and tag the rest. Gather Intel, off to the next target on the list Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at January 19, 2026 09:44 PM (/lPRQ) 277

But things are very spicy in northern "Syria". And our consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan has been mobbed (though not penetrated AFAIK) by crowds of unhappy people (they think we've abandoned their Syrian brethren, which I don't think is quite accurate). Though I have wondered about our ambo in Turkey from the outset, and overall the leeway we've given the rather reckless and ambitious Erdogan. Posted by: JackStraw at January 19, 2026 09:33 PM (viF8m) Same vehicle, different story: January 1974 Gas rationing in effect. Canton NY to Hanover NH (Dartmouth Winter Carnival). Lot's of beer and comestibles consumed by a party of 6. Running on fumes on I-89 from Burlington to Hanover, so we can't take the chance of stopping to pee for fear of running out of gas. So we slide the door back ... strap the guy in the middle seat in with extra belts, and have him hold onto whoever was willing to hang out the door to relieve themselves. We roll into Hanover, side door frozen open with an goodly accumulation of yellow ice down the passengers side. Ya gotta do what you gotta do, and those vans were champs. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is rejecting assertions that the anti-ICE protesters who stormed a church in his state over the weekend broke the federal law the Justice Department has cited as having potentially violated.
"How they are stretching either of these laws to apply to people who protested in a church over the behavior of a religious leader is beyond me," Ellison added. (FOX news) Posted by: old chick at January 19, 2026 09:57 PM (F3Dlr) 290
