You Can Book a Room at the World’s First Moon Hotel for a $1 Million Down-Payment

doof-moon-hotel.jpg

GRU Space, a startup founded by 21-year-old Skylar Chan, hopes to open the world’s first moon hotel by 2032, and is already accepting down-payments from space enthusiasts with very deep pockets. The final cost of the rooms is still unknown, but Chan says it will exceed $10 million. The good news is that you don’t need to pay it all up front. The company is currently taking deposits of $250,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the options selected.

You'd have to be a lunartic to do this.

Pennsylvania Man Charged in Chilling Grave Robbing Case Involving Over 100 Human Remains

Authorities in Pennsylvania have charged a man with multiple crimes after uncovering what they describe as one of the most disturbing cases of grave robbing in the state’s history.

Jonathan Gerlach, 34, of Ephrata, is facing more than two dozen charges after police allegedly caught him robbing a grave at Mount Moriah Cemetery, a historic site located on Kingsessing Avenue spanning Southwest Philadelphia and Yeadon, Delaware County.

Virginia Woman Gains Attention for Snorting Food as Daily Diet Habit

A Virginia woman is drawing national attention after revealing an unusual eating habit: snorting food through her nose. Kathryn, a woman in her 30s, showcased her behavior on the Season 7 premiere of TLC’s My Strange Addiction, where she demonstrated how she blends her meals and consumes them nasally.

The habit, which Kathryn says began five years ago during community college on a dare, involves liquefying entire meals — from omelets to guacamole — and inhaling them through a straw. “It started with a flavored fruit drink. I got a head rush and it tasted even fruitier than drinking it. I was hooked,” she said on the episode.

Chicago Man Addicted to Eating Live Bugs Cuts Back After Health Warnings

Carlos, a 26-year-old from Chicago, has a unique habit—he regularly eats live bugs like mealworms, cockroaches, and crickets. His unusual eating behavior is featured in an episode of TLC’s “My Strange Addiction,” where he describes the taste of mealworms as similar to buttered popcorn and compares crickets to vegetables. He even claims the insides of cockroaches taste like custard.

Carlos says he enjoys the sensation of live bugs squirming in his mouth, calling it a satisfying and primal experience. He admits he’s been fascinated with eating bugs since childhood, and now consumes up to 100 live bugs a day. According to the show’s producers, that adds up to around 30,000 insects a year—roughly the weight of a turkey.

The Pitti Peacocks

Every January and June, the ancient walls of Florence’s Fortezza da Basso transform into something more than a fashion trade show. Welcome to Pitti Uomo, pronounced “Pete-y Whoa-mo”, the biannual menswear fair launched in 1972. It was originally housed in Palazzo Pitti, hence the name, and has long been the beating heart of international menswear business. Over the past 15+ years, it has also become famous for something else entirely: the Pitti Peacocks.*

These larger-than-life attendees — fashion buyers, influencers, stylists, editors, tailors, and self-styled dandies — treat the event’s courtyard as their personal runway. They strut in slow motion, pause dramatically for street-style photographers, and layer outfits with the confidence of creatures whose very purpose is to be seen.

Florence just wrapped Pitti Uomo 109 (Jan 13–16, 2026) and the street style delivered. Some of these pictures may require the use of a paper fan, you have been warned fellow ‘ettes.

Pitti Peacocks remind us menswear doesn't have to be boring. Show up, turn up the volume, and own every cobblestone. Who's ready to strut?

*Filmmaker Aaron Christian humorously captures the scene in his 2016 mockumentary The Life of Pitti Peacocks, narrated in classic David Attenborough style. It portrays the courtyard as a mating ground where “peacocks” jostle for camera proximity, preen, and perform elaborate rituals — all in the hope of landing that one viral shot

I'm far more interested in the details on how GRU Space will staff it for keeping it running, fresh sheets on the bed, room service, groundskeeping - you know someone is going to want to play golf like Alan Shepard or ride around in NASA-like dune buggies, who is going to caddy and operate the motor pool?

But... my neighbor, a 75+ year old widower who can dance, and attract the babes, and not with money but with his dancing, dressing and demeanor is at this club.

So the receivers need to be superconductors. That's usually done by keeping them near absolute zero. MRI-machine superconductors run at about -450 F.

So it's just the small problem of supplying enough power to keep the superconductors cold, then.

This may be closer than Cold Fusion Power, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

124 Men's fashion is just classic fashion. Not complicated. Requires proper fit and not being color-blind, not much more. If we're talking business clothes.

When I was there DC had a justifiable reputation - among the hordes of fed workers anyway - of dressing like schlubs.

Even before I got to the Hill, I was starting to have suits tailor made by a great old Argentine (Italian) immigrant. Place was close to my then-workplace. By the time I left the Hill, that was most of my closet. Wasn't that expensive really considering the yuuuge quality differential over off-the rack stuff even from good outfits.

Pick your ties very carefully. Same with shirts, add a few custom from Hong Kong to get exactly what you need in some cases. Voila. Not rocket science, and zero "fashion".

Why did they think that? I'm guessing someone used social media to vomit that out and the usual suspects amplified it. The entire progressive movement is just Jonestown, minus the flavor-aid. Well, so far.

Most churches I know of, have large men of action who are packing "greet" people at the door. Once the service begins, the doors are locked, the exterior cameras are monitored, and there is a responsible person near the doors for the late-comers.

For these people to barge in was a cascade of security failure, or was an inside job - that is, the pastor or someone else agreed to use the service as a global stage.

Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at January 18, 2026 10:56 PM (a4flb)

I saw the patent drawings of the Pogue (inventor's name) 100 MPG carburetor once. It was just a simple air-to-air heat exchanger made in the form of a thin ribbon wrapped in a spiral. Engine exhaust gases went through the hot side, and intake air plus drippings of liquid gasoline went in the cold side. The gasoline was completely vaporized to a dry gas, and blended with air to the proper 14:1 fuel-air ratio. An engine so equipped would run very smoothly, and also deliver very little power, because the vaporized fuel occupied combustion chamber space that otherwise could be filled with oxygen-bearing air, and a small cloud of minute droplets of liquid gasoline. So a car with a Pogue carburetor got fantastic mileage because it was very underpowered. And eventually, the hot side of the carb would become clogged with carbon.

Imagine if you will... a man who tends his flowers with meticulous care, who carries heavy cases in the dead of night, who scrubs his hands and tools as though erasing some invisible stain. A husband whose invalid wife has suddenly vanished from view, leaving only silence where arguments once echoed. To the casual observer, he is merely another tenant enduring the heat. But to the man across the way, he is something far more sinister—a puzzle of guilt, wrapped in ordinary routine, waiting for the light to expose its cracks.
What begins as idle suspicion spirals into a dangerous game of observation and revelation, where the watcher may become the watched, and the innocent facade hides a killer's heart. Tonight, in this ordinary apartment building, the boundaries between voyeur and victim blur... in the Twilight Zone.

276 I find it hard to believe that Alan Turing could have been so autisticly homo as Cumberbatch played him, even in poofter England.

I finally got around to watching it a few weeks ago. Probably the worst-written well-acted movie I’ve ever seen. There is no way the puzzle solvers they were portrayed as didn’t see the solution at the beginning of the movie when it was telegraphed to the rest of us.

Of the three movies within the movie—breaking Enigma, Young Alan, and Old Gay Alan—there was no need for Young Alan. It added nothing except the rosebud moment at the end. But the reason for the computer name was so obvious treating it as a rosebud moment was pointless.

From what I’ve read elsewhere, Turing was actually well liked by his co-workers and socially comfortable. Don’t know for sure though.

Then there was the programmers taking on strategic planning as there responsibility.

279 So the receivers need to be superconductors. That's usually done by keeping them near absolute zero. MRI-machine superconductors run at about -450 F.

So it's just the small problem of supplying enough power to keep the superconductors cold, then.

This may be closer than Cold Fusion Power, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Superconducting coils can be made to work at the temperature of boiling liquid nitrogen. Keep them in dewars and top off the liquid N2 at the end of the day. Liquid N2 costs about as much as milk, on a per gallon basis.

320 No it isn’t real. No carburetor gets 100mpg unless it’s a motorcycle or something like that
Posted by: Common Tater at January 18, 2026 11:12 PM (hF3wE)

Well, the Pogue carburetor was real. Some people claimed it made 100 MPG, but I doubt that. Might have made 50 with a light auto like a Model A Ford. But at the expense of making the car a real slug. A smooth running slug, but still a slug.

We might note that there are plenty of cars on the road running propane and compressed natural gas as fuel. They run smooth, and the engines last a long time, because no oil dilution, but power output is down from the gasoline-fueled cars with the same engine. When propane and CNG were crazy cheap, due to no road tax, it made a lot of sense to do the conversion if you were a high-mileage user. Back in the 1980's nearly every taxicab in Calgary ran on propane. Now there are none, AFAIK. Electronic fuel injection made gasoline engines much more fuel-efficient, and loner lasting, and increased taxes on alternate fuels destroyed the incentive to use them. Many fleets still run CNG vehicles, but rationale for that is that it sells as being "green".

Thermodynamics is a bitch.

He was fantastic in every scene (especially the last act), except when he was doing the mad scene on the heath, where he flitted around the stage like a butterfly, rather than an 80-year-old grand old warrior gone mad.

But that entrance with Cordelia in his arms--oh my God.

330 Towards the end they started using some non - Conan Doyle stories, and they were not nearly so good.

I wondered about that. It had been a long time (and still is) since I’ve read the collection, so I couldn’t be sure, but they didn’t seem at all like Doyle.

Then again, I’ve read Solar Pons, so who am I to judge.

332 It’s both. Carburetors are (can be) extremely precise, but they don’t come that way out of the box. Not even a little bit.

I messed around with an O2 sensor to fine-tune Holley’s and it was very interesting. There are a gazillion adjustments on those things. Most people have no fucking idea what they are doing, which is why the government forbade any adjustments on them right before they were replaced with fuel injection by 1985.

Every dumb shit with a screwdriver wanted to fuck with the carburetor. I mean it’s right on top, and easy to get to, so let’s fuck with that, right?

They won’t stay in tune or require annual cleaning. Modern fuel destroys power valve diaphragms, corrosion of zinc castings, etc. Excessively rich fuel mixtures “washed out” piston rings, oil dilution, fouls plugs.

I used a scope to for close tuning. An old worn out distributor wallers around like an out of balance washing machine spin cycle, bearings get egg shaped. It causes ignition traces to go goofy too. You’ll never get the point gaps to read the same twice.

I don't know how I missed the news back on December 9, but we've got a wasteland coming up in California. Apple moving lock, stock, and twig to Austin actually has me kind of shook. I've driven by the old Oracle campus many times, and it's not only vacant -- it's a ruin. Tumbleweeds on a barren parking lot and those three giant silver toilet paper rolls shivering in the sun.

Next, the Apple campus, complete with its $1.2bil 850,000 square-foot addition, completed in 2024 to much fanfare and Newscum's trumpeting what a productive state he leads! Desertion scheduled over the next seven years, starting in 2026.

They got part way there with centrifugal weights, and springs. A regular V8 from the 1950s cruises on the highway level ground at around 52° before top dead center.

The only way to achieve that was something other than weights and springs. Utilizing engine manifold vacuum was really ingenious. A guy named Kettering, worked for AC Delco. I watched a rundown of the numbers on someone's YouTube channel and it's jaw-dropping. How's this? Home prices in the area are set to fall by 18-27%. Countless small businesses will go. It ought to be very easy to use breaker points to switch an old-style GM 4-pole HEI module, and use the HEI module to drive a regular ignition coil. Breaker points would last practically forever if they were switching only a few milliamps, witn no back EMF from the collapsing field in the coil primary. Points-triggered "transistor ignition" was a brief fad in the 1960's, but the germanium power transistors used didn't stand the gaff. Then silicon transistors and magnetic triggers came along, and got us to where we are now.

I had a Triumph TR6 that I modified the distributor to use a Mopar magnetic pickup driving a GM HEI module. Ran fine.

The NOS points are fine, with platinum contacts. But they can’t make high voltage capacitors in a small package for some reason. The NOS condensors, I tested a dozen or so from the 60s I had laying around, at 600 volts they all failed, they “see” much higher voltages than that.

I messed around using modern polypropylene “orange drops” - sprague film capacitors work pretty good. Ignition is really weird stuff, high voltage. Change one component in the mix - the spark plugs, the spark plug gap, the wires, the plugs themselves, it can screw everything up.

They even changed the rotor gap, the coearwnce between the distributor terminal, in the 1970s, this will fuck everything up as well. A replacement rotor seems like a good thing, till it isn’t. Ignition coils can get shorted windings in the secondary, very hard to detect, results in attenuation of spark output.

Posted by: Ironside Lore at January 18, 2026 11:59 PM (oftw2)

Pertronix has a big following in the Studebaker world. I did a couple of the V8's using Prestolite electronic distributor parts from early 70's Mopar engines; the big-block Mopars had the correct distributor rotation to work. The supply of those in the junkyards has dried right up, but they worked well back in the day. You can now buy Chinesium HEI distributors for Studebaker V8's. And other engines, too.

Please send the Intermountain West some snow. It's starting to impact our moods. I don't know what this will mean soon. We were annoyed by two odd boys sitting in front of us in church, so it's getting bad out here. Maybe we should go fight the anti-ICE weirdos in MN simply to see snow and release our frustrations.

The mentally ill girl who blends and snorts her food grosses me out. I had sinus surgery age 18yrs (and a blind date in the hospital,I forgot about that til now. A dorm friend brought him in to see me in all my glory of the moustache bandage/drugs. Never saw him again).

To marry this super model you had to learn that I snort salt water to keep things open every night in the bathroom. No worse than brushing teeth sounds. I honestly don't see how she would not get infections as it is so gross, the pain of it must be horrific, and I don't why she simply doesn't have anorexia if she doesn't want to taste her food.YUCK. Get a feeding tube!

Piper:I sort of liked the top photo (without all the hair and the twee scarf). On a woman that would look grand, the mixture of a subtle wool vest, wool jacket, and layers with a blouse and scarf.

408 NGO-funded madness continues in Minneapolis, the volume on violence has been increased and it appears that activists have been given the green light to physically assault ...

...Social media is being flooded with multiple instances ... bystanders being assaulted and some nearly killed.

This includes former J6 prisoner and "controversial" Florida Senate candidate Jake Lang,

Lang was attacked following a speech he gave a the Minneapolis City Hall for his "March Against Fraud". There were no Minneapolis police to be found during the incident. Lang was struck over the head several times with various weapons, and had to be hospitalized for severe lacerations and cranial bleeding.

I agree completely! The real breaking point, as Wretchard has pointed out, will be when the military figures out they’re not going to be paid anymore. (They probably don’t realize that yet). Iran’s financial system has completely collapsed (that’s what precipitated the riots) and the last black market quote for the Iranian Rial was 1.5 million to the dollar. Their currency is worthless. Combine that with reports that regime members have been smuggling billions in foreign currency and gold out of the country recently (preparing for a getaway) it means that they’re going to try running a country with no money at all.

When the guys with the guns find out that part, I don’t think they’re going to be the least bit happy about it, and I don’t think they’re going accept that it’s just the Will of Allah, either.

Posted by: Common Tater at January 18, 2026 11:44 PM (hF3wE)

Harley went with electronic ignition in 1979. The rotor had a magnet in it. That was a 1 year thing, then they moved to the hall effect thing in 1980, then slightly upgraded it in 1982. Its been a great system. Guys would carry a point plate with points and condenser should the electronic system fail. At that point you're back up and running in 15 minutes since the mounting points for either ignition is the same. It was rare anybody had to deal with that though. Its been a great system. It lasted until 1999, then they went crank fired. Now if something goes wrong you're fucked.

Some of their diplomats already asked for asylum, defections everywhere, but the mullahs brought in arab terrorists and assorted other headchopers from Afghanistan, Iraq and other shitholes like HOuthiland to kill everyone, even when their own forces refused. 441 Yeah, the orange drops or large poly caps of sufficient voltage won’t fit inside the distributor is all, have to remote mount them.

The increased rotor/terminal gap took me a while to figure out. The part # was the same, for replacements, but it caused arcing elsewhere. The old school ignition components were good stuff, but they tried to make emissions (lean fuel mixtures) by screwing things up. Increasing spark plug gap does the same thing, the coil will reach a higher firing voltage. This is good, but only up to a point.

And then valve timing. Detroit screwed the pooch with that as well. They changed timing chains without telling anybody, basically. Retarded valve timing. Tolerances in manufacturing usually cancel each other out, but sometimes “stack up”, without degreeing a cam in, it’s just guessing.

I figured out a barnyard degree wheel using an old pie plate, and a bent coat hanger as a pointer, and installed a new timing chain with several degrees advance. It ran REALLY nice after that.

There’s just a gazillion things that got out of tune on the old school stuff. It’s all done with computers & fuel injection now, no use for guys like me any more lol.

462 Hello, horde! Sorry I'm late.

Had to *do battle* with the pellet stove today. Grrr. Had shut it down this afternoon, for its weekly cleaning. Usually wait 3 hours to let it cool off before scraping & vacuuming, but it was off for 6 before I got back home to do the work.

Then, when I re-lit & switched it on...the most awful, loud screeching from the exhaust blower motor! (yeah, it had been chirping a little the last couple of weeks, even after some spray-lube. It's a "sealed-bearing" unit but the extra lube helped for a while)

Had to let it cool down a bit more before putting new motor in. And then I hadn't installed the fins low enough on the shaft; had to take it out *again* to make adjustment. Another half hour to let it cool & smoke to clear the unit..

UGH! Meanwhile, house was down to 60 degrees. It's 30 outside, so I guess that means my life doesn't really suck as bad as I think it does.

Ya all can help y'selves to the bar-- OH, I see you already have done so-- Great! I will join you!!!!

DDS, your questions alone are smarter than my answers could be. I keep reading headlines that "iconic San Fran restaurant closes" and they're a blur. The story that caught my eye was about a restaurant with huge windows, near the Embarcadero, that I used to pass when going to work. Ahhh, how I longed to go in there! If only I could afford it.

It was smashed up in the anti-Floyd riots of 2020 because... why not?

A business trip way up the seaway ended with an overnight stay in QC for the next morning's flight. Got in around 9:30PM, only nearby food was a strip club. I had a steak and a beer, and supported single moms for about two hours after the beer - drank soda. I come out into a dark.and snow covered parking lot, and right across the street is a QC police car, watching the club. Fish where the fish are. Now comes the good part. Unfamiliar rental car, fumble keys trying to get door open, have to grope around in the dark a bit to.get the key into the ignition. I pull out, left turn right past them, 20 mph for a block and a half to the hotel, with them right in.my ass. They park behind me, and, after a shift into english, we proceed to.have a"knock and talk". Took.awhile to convince them that I wasn't drunk. Nice and polite, though

I woke up last week and the family room, which has its own zone, was 57 degrees. Went to the heater, gave the circulator pump a small whack with a hammer, and the pipes started getting hot. It must be seizing, or having hard time starting. I got a new pump just in case it really shits the bed. I would like to wait til the weather breaks to change it. I'll see how long the hammer tap lasts.

473 I carry at church but the physical set up at my church gives me nightmares from a security perspective, way too much glass, too many ingress/egress options. I'm eventually going to put up a pole barn. I'm probably going with a pellet stove. A friend of mine built a house in N carolina and uses a pellet stove. He said it only costs about $6-700 to heat the entire house during the winter using the pellet stove. It got me interested.

Now you tell.me.
This is my 5th year with this Cleveland. Replaced the igniitor after one year, and the room fan last year. I have to order parts, but they've been pretty fast. I have the propane (ghastly expensive) furnace for stove downtime.
I usually turn it off around 3, and have it cleaned and reloaded with pellets by 5. It runs over the evening, I just turned it off a half hour ago. My wife fires it up around 6:30-7 when she gets up, and it runs the rest of the day. It keeps the living areas of the house (not well insulsted) between 76 - 68. Keep the bedroom doors closed, they stay in the low 60s. Outside temps today were 45 high and supposed to go to 23 tonight.
It works fine as my primary heat source for about $6/day, as opposed to $450 a month in propane.

Firewood used to be cheap here. Then, everybody and their unemployable nephew went out to "make wood" and prices got ridiculous. Didn't know if you were going to get good wood or chopped-up, sooty slash until they showed up.

Well, that's how it was 25 years ago when I last had a fireplace and tried to BUY vs DIY cordwood.

Splitters are great for green- or softwood. A crisp, cold day is great for axe-work on seasoned stuff.

Yes. "Supposed to be" being the operative phrase. I see you have a furnace also. Nice to have backup!

I have space heaters for backup, if you can call it that-- they cannot keep this house livable, but can keep pipes from freezing.

A bag a day = about $6 a day. Can keep the house at ~70* if it's not below 20F outside, except when I shut it down for cleanings. Then, house cools to 68 or so if I get started up right away.

It's not bad, it's just more labor-intensive than I want to deal with. But I'm *stuck* with it for now and possibly for the rest of my life.

Just noticed a new weather station popped up on the map close by. These things are getting popular.

But I've got to register a complaint. He botched his barometer offset setting. I don't know why this is so difficult for people. Well, I do. The "setting your barometer for dummies" instructions in the manuals for these things is sorely lacking. They tell you just to compare your absolute reading with the nearest airport, and add the difference. No mention much about *the time* of the airport observation you're looking at.

And that's what this new guy apparently did, and he's 0.12" low.
