Greenland, NATO, The EU...The Clownshow Continues

Whether Greenland is a vitally important strategic island that absolutely requires American possession is a question for the ages, but it is a militarily-important bulwark in the North Atlantic. It is an excellent point from which to defend the Atlantic from the Arctic Ocean and the Barents Sea. Does it have enough rare earth elements and other resources to make it even more important? Yeah...probably not. We have plenty of that sort of stuff in America, it's just that we have an insane regulatory state that makes using our own resources a massive undertaking.

Because it is a territory of Denmark, the few people who live there are treated as vassals, when they are treated at all. That is entirely unsurprising, because the track record of European colonialism is mixed at best.

Greenlanders Blast Danish Rule: 'They Stole Our Future'

This shouldn't be taken as a sign that Greenland natives are anxious to come over to the United States. Denmark is trying to make amends to the natives who were thusly mistreated, to the tune of roughly $46,000 each in reparations. That's just; unlike the calls for reparations in the United States, these payments are being made to the living people who suffered under an unjust policy, which is quite a different kettle of fish.

Many Greenland natives would rather the island be an independent nation. But that's not a tenable solution, especially in today's tense geopolitical atmosphere, where the Arctic is increasingly a vital strategic area, with all the major nations - the United States, Russia, and China in particular - looking to that region's resources. Greenland has to be under someone's defensive envelope, and even as a Danish possession, they fall under the protection of NATO, as it would as a possession of the United States.

President's Trump's saber rattling with respect to "taking Greenland" is entirely unnecessary, and could have been neatly avoided by playing up the miserable living conditions of the people of Greenland, and the equally miserable way they have been treated by the Danes. America could have been their knight in shining armor, bringing equality and prosperity to their shores. Making some offer to purchase or in some other way take possession of Greenland as a reasonable transaction between allies would have disarmed the reflexive nationalism that is bubbling up in Denmark and Greenland. Is the President's threat of military action a serious one? I doubt it. It is more of his unpredictability, which serves him quite well in many ways. But with Greenland I think it is bolstering the enemies of America.

On the other side of the equation, the idea that the EU will rush in with military force to protect Greenland is clownish in the extreme. Force projection is a joke in the EU. They can barely keep their few planes flying, much less maintain any sort of heavy lift capability. In fact, in a recent military exercise, Germany sent 13 soldiers to Greenland, and they had to use a Polish airline to get them there. And less than two days later they were ordered out, presumably because of President Trump's comments.

And the ridiculousness doesn't end there. Threats to throw America out of Europe if we take Greenland? Sure...that would mean an almost instant Russian victory in Ukraine, the loss of many billions of dollars of American spending in Europe, and the very real threat of an expansionist Russia, because there is simply no real military on the continent.

So...everyone calm down. Greeenlanders? Take nice big checks written by America, and maybe some good high-paying jobs in our expanding military infrastructure and mining efforts. Denmark? Smile, cash the check, and relax now that you don't have to deal with Greenland. And the EU? Just sit down and shut up. Nobody cares what you think.

On the other hand, it’s an effective way to grab the EU by the back of their head and rub their noses in the poo on the carpet, just to show them that from now on they’re going to do what they’re told and LIKE IT.

And if this instead leads to a final blow up of NATO, well that’s far more their loss than ours.

Posted by: LinusVanPelt at January 18, 2026 12:10 PM

Upon returning to Iceland after his exile ended (around 985 CE), Erik the Red (Erik Thorvaldsson) promoted the land to attract settlers. According to medieval Icelandic sagas (primary sources like the Saga of Erik the Red and references in the Book of Icelanders), he named it Greenland because, as he reportedly said, "people would be more eager to go there if the land had an attractive name." This was essentially a marketing tactic to draw colonists, contrasting with Iceland's name (which emphasized ice to perhaps deter others or reflect features). [ ... ]

While some suggest the southern coasts were genuinely greener then (due to warmer climate allowing vegetation), historical accounts consistently point to Erik's promotional intent as the key reason for the name.

My sentiments as well when reading that. LA Dodgers signing Tucker just makes the vast majority of MLB fans hate the Dodgers more and hate what MLB has become. And driving more people away from MLB, because it's obvious their teams have no shot in a ridiculously unfair league.

I think you exactly nailed why Trump is behaving this way. The Euros behave a lot like China. The EU face is profoundly anti American as their leadership views America as a strategic competitor--the NATO face is a supplicant because Euros do not want to pay for their own self defense nor build the militaries necessary to do so.

Ukraine is where the rubber meets the road and the ridiculous undermining US in trying to institute peace is a sign that the Euros essentially want to take hundreds of billions of Russian frozen foreign assets to plug their own decaying banks and finances. To keep the war going, they 'borrowed' billions against those assets to make up for massive decline in US support under Trump.

Canada has been in bed with China for decades. They have been a transit point for Chinese steel and other products that got passed through Canada with a "Product of Canada" tag to evade trade deals while closing their markets to US farm products.

Canada made their choice and now they can learn to live as a vassal state of China. Trump chose wisely.

Most European leaders are WEF, and the WEF is far more totalitarian in its aims than Russia. If you recall Hillary and her reset button, the dems adoration of Russia abruptly ended when Putin told Obama that he should not go down the communist road as it was a failure. IMO, dems hoped to spur Putin to revive the USSR. WEF is now following suit, although their plan is to dismantle Russia and take over the land and probably fill it full of Islamists. They are not afraid of Islam, they welcome it, and put the migrants up in hotels and give them cash. Like our Boasberg types, Europe if full of judged eager to let the migrants off when it comes to rape, assault and theft of any magnitude. We should consider deporting Somalis to London or Brussels

95 Eris link at #16 is an important factor than no Leftist media outlets are reporting. (China was trying to bypass Denmark and get approval from Greenlanders to build some airfields.)

Leftists are always so feckless and weak on foreign policy that they almost never are capable of opposing a "camel's nose into the tent" strategy.

One possible scenario I see for Trump's apparent hardline stance is that we have some intelligence of China's next move. For example, China is going to build two "global warming scientific monitoring" stations in Greenland. Of course they need a harbor. Of course they need some dock cranes. Of course they need a sizeable fuel depot.

Then some Chinese fishing boat (spy trawler) signals international distress and needs to dock in the harbor.

For every single tiny step, some Euro politicians would say that is not a provocation for a reaction. Eventually the Chinese would have a military base.

Trump got the Euros to put soldiers on Greenland just over idle talk. Now the step to stop Chinese facilities is much easier for the surrender monkeys to initiate.

Pissed off the Spanish and English but the American people as noted above cheered. And thus Jefferson asked for forgiveness from Congress by putting the Louisiana Purchase in form of a treaty before the Senate vote was 24-7.

Realizing that was a losing game (if you're playing poker with a $5 chip, and your remaining opponent is sitting on $50 Million and a royal flush). So, now they're turning to China as an alternative. That's just going to result in Chinese imports undercutting the EU's domestic manufacturers, few of which still remain.

Then, the EU join in with the Ukraine and Zelenskyy to try and sabotage any potential peace deals, so Trump cuts them 100% out of the process. They whine and whine about that while simultaneously meeting with Zelenskyy to try and counter any reasonable peace agreement. All the while, they are trying to invoke their domestic censorship to outside countries like the US by financially fining social media parties a % of their worldwide revenue (without any form of enforcement).

According to polls in Texas, Talarico has a pretty clear lead over Crockett… on the GOP side Cornyn and Paxton are essentially tied… but the biggest surprise: Paxton is tied or even slightly behind both Dems.

This is a clear example of lying pollsters…. I’d be willing to bet a fair sum right now that Paxton is easily the GOP nominee and beats whatever Dem by at least 7 points… IOW it won’t be close. But the pollsters sure do portray another reality….

142 imo, Minneapolis has become somali central, but, that doesn't include all the rural areas which have attempted to use their voices/votes to stand for conservative values.

I can't speak for anyone else who comments here, but I am not in favor of giving up on any U.S. city or state. That includes CA, IL, NYC, etc. It would be national suicide to do so.

With respect to Minnesota, I am 100% in favor of deporting every last Somali, illegal or legal, who has been involved in corruption and fraud. If that's all of them, then deport them all. I am also in favor of revoking Ilhan's citizenship, kicking her out of elected office and deporting her back to Somalia.

Those actions, combined with shutting down every single last fraudulent "business" these Somalis and their partners in Minnesota government had going, would go a long way to turning Minnesota back to normal.

Greenland is far more important to US defenses than Euroland anymore. The new model of warfare are missiles and drones, not armored warfare on the European plains. We need Greenland as the polar route is the route of a lot of ICBM missiles to the US and thus Greenland is key for the new Golden Dome defenses from rancid countries like China and perhaps, not likely Russia.

Reason why we were in Greenland in the first place after WWII.

Law is pretty clear. The Dems have been trying to use the idea from Obamacare Medicaid decision that cutting off funds hurts the poors but that particular decision, which distinguished previous decisions like SD v. 165 There's often a method to Trump's madness even if not evident. He's up to several things with "Greenland"

Trump & Co recently released a report on US global strategic priorities:
1. Fortress Americas with a latter-day Monroe Doctrine
2. The Far East. We'll try to get China to play nice, but if not see #1
3. Europe. Has lost its way. If they don't find their way back, it's on them. See #1
4. Africa. Benign neglect. See #1

"Greenland" is clearly part of #1.

But it's also #3. Denmark has sovereignty over Greenland only in a nominal way for historic reasons now obscure. You'd think our NATO allies would appreciate our strategic interest and play along. But no.

By sending a token resistance force our NATO allies are proving that the Alliance is long past its expiration.

The point is that Tom immediately accepted without telling Congress and sent back instructions to buy the whole shebang via treaty. After the Treaty was inked, then Tom informed Congress presenting it with fait accompli.

If the Senate tried to vote against it, the people (and land speculating donors) would rise up and kick their asses out of office and if the House balked about the additional payment authorization, the same issue.

194 The world operates on the basis of force and actual strength, like Machiavelli said. It does not operate on "fair." While fairness us a valud abd usually beneficial aspect of applied power, it is in itself an appeal to emotion, good feelings, not necessary conditions.

What on Earth do the psychopaths in Minneapolis propose as a better state if affairs? They can not and will prosper without markets for their goods and resources for their economy. Jacob Frey and Tim Walz are picking a fight that the people of their state will not win; this Renee Good was a victim - foolushly - of that regime's own addiction ti fraud and graft. Useful idiot. No, Minnesota will not be let go just because the delusional morons running the place say so. But the potential for real damage for zero gain to anyone continues to rise.

What may be seen as an "airport" in Alaska are most likely grass strips recognized by FAA as an "airport". There are many advantages to doing this with a private airfield...

Chyna is financing what the general public thinks of as an airport and hoping they can repo it. Instant Chyna AF Base build unde disguise as a civilian airport.

So they have "empathy" for illegals which means they will try to stop laws from being enforced to deport them so they can harvest their votes, pay them below a "living wage" under the table, and grift off of their welfare. And it should be noted their level of support for illegals has directly increased as the infrastructure to use them has.

While it is true that there are often multiple motivations for why people do things it sure seems like every example of leftist "empathy" is something that directly benefits them.

But yes, there is a reason that the left self medicates itself with really powerful anti depressants and anti anxiety meds--it is because the world does not work the way that they were taught.

267 My FWP is that Mrs. Wrecks is mad at me. Again. I texted her and my two daughters the blue jacketed f*ckeroffer video because I thought it was funnier than anything Jimmy Kimmel ever did. Mrs. Wrecks bawled me out for texting my daughters that kind of language. They're both in their 30s and one is a big Landman fan so I know they've never heard such language. Mrs. Wrecks says it's just another example of how Trump’s crassness has degraded the culture.

269 The Danes are totally incapabe resource wise to defend the native population of Greenland.
It behoves the U.S. to make Greenland a protectorate of the U.S. Government because Canada is totally inept.
As a U.S. protectorate, the indigenous population would continue their freedom without regulation to manage their own environment for their lifestyle. The U.S. would enhance their protection for calamity and health, not at their expence. The purpose would be not to make them into a welfare state, but an independent autonomous civilization with U.S. protection, unlike Denmark which surreptitiously enforced population control.

270 ESPN helping to spread pro-"palestine" propaganda. "Tens of thousands have been killed"? Where is that info coming from, terrorists?

Source: Azeez Al-Shaair fined for 'stop the genocide' eye black

Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has been fined $11,593 for wearing eye black that contained the message "stop the genocide" during last week's wild-card game, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Sunday.

The message was in reference to concerns over Israel's policies in Gaza, where tens of thousands have been killed in Israeli military operations following the deadly Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. Israel has adamantly rejected genocide allegations against it as an antisemitic attack.

Al-Shaair, who is Muslim, has aided Palestinians on the field by wearing cleats to support Palestinian causes through the NFL's "My Cause, My Cleats" program over the past few seasons.

"If my platform can bring even a little hope to families in Palestine, then that is what I want to use it for," he said in a statement earlier this season.

Also, this guy is a multi-multi-millionaire. If he cares about his cause so much, why isn't he either sending some of his millions to the people of Gaza or quitting football like Pat Tillman and joining the people of Gaza.

But we never really conquer we pay for what we take.

But I can't be guaranteed that so I don't the squeeze is worth the juice.

280 I think Trump's saber rattling was useful. It showed, or should have shown, the Europeons how powerless they really are. They got so mad, then sent, what, fifty soldiers total from EU countries to "protect" Greenland from Trump? Yeah, way to tell China and Russia that you're weak and ready to roll over. Pansies. Too bad for the real men and women there. If they keep us out, might as well hoist the hammer and sickle above the government buildings because China will move right in. That'll show Trump....

286 reasonable transaction between allies would have disarmed the reflexive nationalism that is bubbling up in Denmark and Greenland.

I disagree. No matter how Trump goes about pursuing his goals, it's ALWAYS wrong because Orange Man Bad. We all know the Left would shriek in rage if Trump cured cancer and try to find a way to stop people from benefiting from it.

The left does not respond to elegant manners and niceness. So why spend the extra energy trying to appease them?

=======
Medieval warming period allowed the Vikings from Iceland to go west and find Greenland. Iceland by that time was deforested from being settled for several hundred years prior. Canada's east coast was called Vinland as grapes for wine could be grown.

"Around 985, Vikings founded the Eastern and Western Settlements, both near the southern tip of Greenland. In the colony's early stages, they kept cattle, sheep, and goats, with around a quarter of their diet from seafood. After the climate became colder and stormier around 1250, their diet steadily shifted towards ocean sources. By around 1300, seal hunting provided over three quarters of their food.

By 1350, there was reduced demand for their exports, and trade with Europe fell away. The last document from the settlements dates from 1412, and over the following decades, the remaining Europeans left in what seems to have been a gradual withdrawal, which was caused mainly by economic factors such as increased availability of farms in Scandinavian countries."
