6 Difference between a violin and a fiddle leaf?

Violin has four string and a skinny neck.

Fiddle has four strangs and a redneck.

12 I will admit, regretfully, that the painting of the sheet music is impressive.

Seems like the artist could have demonstrated technical prowess using a subject with a bit more interest, though.

14 Not sure why anyone would hang a violin and a piccolo on a door like that, but I do like the attention to detail in the twine and the wood grain of the violin.

18 National Gallery of Art-

The painting explores the theme of time's passage. Harnett illustrates this through the signs of wear on the violin and the sheet music, suggesting a connection between the past and the present. The choice of objects reflects a nostalgia for earlier times.

The King did but it was too late. The shoe was lost for want of a nail and the kingdom with it.

25 Today, for your perusal, we present a magazine illustration.

Technically very good, I mean, look at the lines, the consistency of light and shadow, it could just about be a photograph, yet, it just doesn't reach on an emotional level.

Not something I would spend too much time standing in front of at a gallery. Would not hang.

159 Still Life—Violin and Music, 1887
William Michael Harnett (1848-1892)
Medium Oil on canvas

Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts -
William Michael Harnett

Harnett first studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and later at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. Too poor to afford live models, Harnett turned to still-life painting, becoming one of the leading 'trompe l'oeil' painters in America. Between 1880 and 1886 Harnett also studied in Munich and later in Paris. When he returned to America he settled in New York City, where he resided until his premature death at the age of forty-four. This still life is characteristic of his later work in the tightness of its execution and rather luxurious collection of tabletop objects. He acquired many of these props while in Europe, and upon his return to America, used them constantly. The sheet music and violin reflect Harnett's interest in music, ...
suggest the contemporary fascination with the past and its comforting values.

His illusionism was so convincing that Harnett was arrested in 1886 on a counterfeiting charge after exhibiting one of his paintings of a five-dollar bill.

Like the painting but would likely pass hanging.

209 Does anyone notice that it seems that Democrats don't know what any words mean?
-----

They know. They just think that YOU don't know what words mean. The giveaway that they DO know how stuff works is this: The Strategic Oil Reserve. They tap it EVERY SINGLE TIME a Democrat occupies the White House, because when Democrats occupy the White House gas prices always go to hell and become outrageous.

So Democrats FOR FIVE MINUTES remember "supply and demand curves", and tap the Strategic Reserve so that "supply" will increase and prices (temporarily) go down.

Then five minutes later they return to stupidity and propose raising the minimum wage or something else equally ignorant.

224 Virginia is proposing to tax people 3.8% a year on collected assets for assets over .5 million. ...
Posted by: Axeman at January 21, 2026 10:17 AM (Q4cxx)

A 3.8% annual wealth tax is YUGE.

Assume your net worth is a million bucks and the scope is "everything." Your home equity is $500k. You have $350k in retirement. You have $100k in mutual funds and $50k in cash on hand.

The wealth tax will come to $38,000.

In year 1, you can pay that out of your cash on hand. You no longer have an emergency fund, but the tax is paid. You take down your mutual fund and buy in again at $50k to refill your emergency fund. You pay capital gains tax to do that.

In year 2, you owe a bit less. You pay the tax, leaving ~$25k in your emergency fund. That's enough for your rainy day, but not for next year's tax. Take down the mutual, leaving you with ~$77k in cash on hand. That gets you the next two years of taxes, assuming nothing goes wrong.

Starting in year 5 - or earlier, if there's an expensive problem (likely on a 5-year timeline) - you're now liquidating retirement funds or selling your house.

225 Police chief claims ICE agents drew a weapon on his officer … who hesitated to identify self

At a Tuesday press conference intended to address a church protest, Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley dropped a bombshell instead: he accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents of aggressively confronting an off-duty police officer—with guns drawn.

What happened next escalated fast.
“When she became concerned about the rhetoric and the way she was being treated, she pulled out her phone in an attempt to record the incident. The phone was knocked out of her hands, preventing her from recording it. The officers had their guns drawn during this interaction. And after the officer became so concerned, she was forced to identify herself as a Brooklyn Park police officer in hopes of slowing the incident and de-escalating the situation.

Maybe do that BEFORE grabbing your phone for a tik tok moment.
Not buying this. Smells. Goes to Bo Snerdley.

And they're mostly government employees or in affiliated enterprises - making "GTFO" a lot harder, since earning potential is going to collapse when you leave the government center and have to find work in whatever local market you're targeting. Their salaries are essentially a non-portable special circumstance and the individual's debt situation is likely to be structured around maintaining a reasonable-for-that-location salary floor that is not going to exist elsewhere.

"GTFO" is a lot harder in that scenario without a radical decline in lifestyle and very possibly bankruptcy. A lot of those frogs will choose to be boiled if VA does it.

Silicon Valley has a similar problem, though career portability is generally better.

There should be entire semesters dedicated to it because Hollywood has largely forgotten how to do it.

TJM,

While I'm disagreeing with you.

I'd don't think "Village of the Damned" is Carpenter's worst film at all.

I'd probably place it where you have "Prince of Darkness"(maybe higher) for much the same reason, Carpenter's strength as a director really shines in the set pieces, especially. the alien fetal reveal scene.

Also, the difference in the Brit original and this one is that the Brit version focusses on a country village England that no longer exists and so is more concerned with family and high trust community.

Carpenter's as per his tendencies focusses on how the government comes in a takes over the show, the villagers are a secondary thought.

The Brit version is emotionally stronger though because of this.

344 336 Carpenter's as per his tendencies focusses on how the government comes in a takes over the show, the villagers are a secondary thought.

The Brit version is emotionally stronger though because of this.

======

I can see that as a change in focus with validity, but I still don't buy any of the drama and pretty much everything about the kids is all wrong.

I just don't think the movie works, no matter Carpenter's intentions.

Goes to show that context matters. What is ambiguous in one context is clear as a bell in another.

I do love Manos. I think Hal Warren had a good idea, but he didn't flesh it out enough.

There was a crowdfunded sequel / reboot a few years back called Manos Returns, which, while replicating some of the original, ended up being even more confusing.

I still say there's a good idea in the mess. Maybe I'll take a crack at it someday.

363 Heh. Nothing to be found online in the news about the truck wreck on apache Trail. AZ511.gov, which tracks road closures, does show the road closed at the Fish Creek bridge, due to a semi trailer stuck.

I suspect it didn't make the news because it would draw unwanted attention to unqualified truckers on the road.
