It requires changing the pH of the lens temporarily and trickling a charge across it using a metal form that fits like a contact lens. Unfortunately, last I heard it was something only done on rabbit eyes and after they had been removed from the dead rabbits. I wonder if it could be used to clear up cataracts as well.

I told my wife's eye surgeon about it and he seemed pretty amped by the possibility, though he had not seen the paper.

My late barber was in the Air Force right after WWII on Japan's northernmost island. Had pictures of electric lines and poles at ground level because the snow was 15 or 20 feet deep. You might want to go in the Summer.

My ex got lasik surgery just a few years after it was available. The doctor asked me to come into the room cause he believed it was calming since she was going to be awake during the procedure. Wasn't calming for me. Then he gave us a VHS tape of the procedure like we were going to ever want to see that again.

Hard pass on lasik.

My eyes changed shape significantly in my 20s-30s making it hard to fit contacts. I ruled out laser because no doctor ever said why this could happen without a disease.

My wife was concerned that there was something wrong with the skin on my arms when we were putting her in the car after the surgery, she kept saying my skin was all bumpy. I thought it was the anesthetic talking, but she told me when she woke up from 5 hours of sleeping it off that it was the freckles.

94 One time I was traveling West mostly through I40 during the winter in the snow and I probably saw dozens of wrecks occur right by me like that first video. When I finally got to a hotel I, for real, peeled my hands off the steering wheel because I had it in a death grip.

The worst was traveling up I75 to work and two separate times a contractor truck had ladders fly off. The first time a ladder came at me, it popped into sliding a-frame mode, I just barely get away, then the idiot in the truck starts careening over, and I just slip between him and the sliding ladder. The second time an aluminum step ladder flies off, a car in front of me clips it, the ladder flies up and is hovering/spinning and I drive my car keanu/matrix style under/around the metal vortex of death.

Mine aren't quite ready for it yet, but the eye doc says probably within five years.

Everyone I know who's had modern cataract surgery (and, being an old bastard, I know quite a few of them) is extremely happy with it.

My late mother got the first eye done about 20 years ago, and immediately began badgering the doc to do the other one (they only do one eye at a time just in case something DOES go wrong).

Eye doctors try to get you to delay the procedure as long as possible. They will come up with everything. Hey you'll need to get cataracts fixed later might as well wait. Hey you'll have stigmatism, might as well wait. Just so they can keep you on the yearly complete replacement of everything, hand over all your money, scam train. I despise everyone involved in the eyeglass industry from the doctors on up.

I tried to save money by getting these aholes to put new lenses in their $$$$$ frames I got the year before. I get a call from the doctor, "hey dummy, the lab called, they decided to break your frames", ... what? IOLs..Intra Ocular Lens. They can correct two out of three conditions. They can accomplish both spherical and cylindrical correction (near/farsightedness and astigmatism) but you're out of luck on presbyopia. If you have no astigmatism, there are IOLs that "fold" in response to the muscles of your eye, just like your young eyes did, allowing you to both see far and close clearly.
I wore glasses from a young age (another story) so I don't find it a burden to have plain glass lenses with the bifocals "spots" on them. Putting glasses on and off was a no go, and I didn't want to sport that Schmuckie Choomer glasses on the end of my nose.
My eyes were both 20/200 - only because I knew] that there was a "E" at the top of the chart. 20/15 today, except for book reading.

This past year I went back because KY requires a vision test to renew the driver's license. Prescription had not changed in the 7 years in between. So I thought, hey, lemme get some progressive bifocal. Mother fucker. With insurance, nothing else bought $800. Dear Lord.

My daughter wanted mom in the room, and sort of reluctantly offered me the opportunity to watch my first grandson being born - so I wouldn't feel left out, I suppose. I politely refused.
In both cases, I probably would have passed out.
In every case where it's been my blood and pain, I am.eternally grateful.for moderm.anesthesia.

The cost is the main thing, and sleeping with a clear patch over your eye. Mom got her first cataract done in 1968 and the surgeon did it free hand and she had to be on her back for a week, my wife's was outpatient and the worst part was her sleeping off the anesthetic and then insisting she could do things. My wife got the multi-focus lens and she is delighted, she can see the jets and birds when I point them out and she was delighted by the colors she had forgotten.
She said, "this is what heaven must look like!"

My eye sight is at the edge of what lenses can correct. I have to get high index of refraction polymers $$, then special grinding because they're still thick $$$, some AR coating to help with the weird chromatic aberrations that high index polymers cause $$$$, and then I'm 29 going on 60 so progressive lenses $$$$$. It all adds up. And then they will only put those lenses in certain frames. I pay upwards of $1500 / year. Much more if they talk me into the near/reading glasses plus far all day glasses. It's crazy. And the cheap online places, when I checked them 5-10 years ago were also expensive for the lenses I need.

But it's the frames the piss me off. Why can't I reuse them?? Because that cuts off their $$$$. I'm just their mark.

My eye doctor keeps telling me that would be the best thing that ever happened to me (I'm a bit on the nearsighted side would you believe). I know some people that have done it and love that they no longer needed glasses and someone here recently said pay for the extra acuity lenses. It's not a terrible process, I think it's just the day after each that's kind of uncomfortable. Good luck!
