The State Department will pause immigrant visa processing from 75 countries whose migrants take welfare from the American people at unacceptable rates. The freeze will remain active until the U.S. can ensure that new immigrants will not extract wealth from the American people.
The pause impacts dozens of countries -- including Somalia, Haiti, Iran, and Eritrea -- whose immigrants often become public charges on the United States upon arrival.
We are working to ensure the generosity of the American people will no longer be abused.

The decision, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, places an immediate pause on visa approvals until the U.S. can verify that future immigrants will be financially self-sufficient rather than dependent on public assistance.
In a formal statement, the United States Department of State said the freeze is intended to prevent additional strain on American taxpayers and ensure the country's immigration system no longer rewards welfare dependence, stressing that the administration's priority is protecting American workers and public resources.
The pause affects dozens of countries identified by the department as consistently producing high numbers of migrants who become public charges shortly after arrival, including Somalia, Haiti, Iran, and Eritrea, with officials emphasizing that the policy will remain in place until safeguards are in place to stop what they view as systemic abuse of U.S. generosity.

House just passed such a bill under reconciliation guidelines that eliminated any federal funds for illegals. Now it is the Senate's turn. And fwiw, Senate can use reconciliation to pass a minibus for the remaining spending bills as the shutdown looms at the end of the month. Dems want to defund DHS and enforcement for deportations now and DHS funding bill is one of those moving through the Senate.

Personally, I found it telling that as soon as the lead judge in Iran issued the statement that the country's chaos must cease by any means necessary, the shootings started. Interestingly, at the time that statement was issued, he had no case in front of him. It was just a message that the IRG would not be prosecuted for outright murder of protesters.
