Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - January 13, 2026 [Doof]

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Tuesday night ONT. Appreciate you choosing to end your day here. There's content for those who care. Open thread as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Joke's on you!

Woman Files Complaint Against Husband Because He Concealed the Fact That He Was Bald

Lavika Gupta, a resident of Gaur City Avenue-1, in central Noida, recently filed a police complaint against her husband and four in-laws, alleging that she was deceived when she agreed to marry her spouse in 2024. Among her accusations, the woman claims that she was promised a man with lush, healthy hair, but married a bald man wearing a wig.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at Bisrakh police station, Lavika Gupta and Sanyam Jain were married on January 16, 2024. The wife claims that she was deceived at the time, with Jain and his family concealing various details about his physical appearance, education, and financial status.

Gupta added that when she agreed to marry Sanyam, she was promised a man with “thick hair”, but she later learned that her spouse was bald and wearing a patch to conceal his lack of hair.

Must have been a really good hairpiece!

Guys can always use more tools, right? I'm not really sure what the purpose of these are, though. Need someone to mansplain, please!

"Vampliers" are an engineering marvel that every homeowner needs

Vampliers come from the company Vampire Tools, a Japanese manufacturer that uses premium high-carbon steel for its professional-grade tools. It has an entire lineup of Vampliers, which refer to specifically designed pliers that can get you out of difficult situations.

Suppose you are using your electric screwdriver to screw in a long screw to hold up some curtains. As you're pressing it into the wall, your driver slips and strips the head of the screw. You try to put your screwdriver back into the head of the screw, but it can't catch any of the edges, and it won't turn the screw anymore. What are you supposed to do?

I've been in situations like this before, and the goal is to get some kind of traction on that screw so it turns. A good set of pliers can feel like a forgotten tool, but even ones that you normally have may not work with their design. At that point, you either want to just get the screw out of the wall, so you can replace it. I've tried different methods, like putting a rubber band onto the top of the screw and adding my screwdriver against that in hopes that the rubber would conform to the top of the screw and allow me to turn it.

With Vampliers, they are engineered with a patented design that has serrations not only vertically down the tip of the pliers but also horizontally. This gives you a greater chance of being able to grab the side of the screw head, rather than having to deal with the stripped head. You can latch onto the side from a downward angle or from a side angle, allowing you to potentially spin the screw and get it to come out.

Help me out, fellas. Are these really must-haves??

60 I never heard of vamplers.
Maybe 10 years ago a company -- I think it was just called "Engineer" in Japan -- started selling a line of screw grabbing pliers. I have one or two. They were new and they had displays in all the home centers with rounded screws. They are pretty good.

I already had some Knipex, which are the slotted adjustable ones with the orange handle (German) and they are essential.

This vampler thing sounds like either a rebrand, or a copy. I would check that they really are made in Japan though -- China plays all kinds of tricks, like putting the handle on, or packaging in a country and saying they are "made" there.

62 Piss coordinates aren't chosen in a vacuum. Let me explain.

All by yourself in the house? Well, then. E-5 is your assignment. HOWEVER, at a party with people right outside the door. You're, at least, going to the more quiet E-1 or E-9. The less water, the less sound. The professionals shoot for the non-water porcelain on the side for ultimate muffle. This is basic stuff. There is a caveat to this as well. If your conscientious, you're going to be concerned about a targeting error requiring clean up. Even at someone else's house. So, focus and concentrate.

If you're hammered. There's a perfectly good sink at the perfect level. Don't forget to rinse the bowl. And no funny business with other people's toothbrushes. That's over the line.

97 OK, this is the link to the company that started this screw extraction pliers thing.

I have the "Engineer PZ-55" and that should work in search engine if the link doesn't work.

I suspect vampler is a Chinese copy.

I use them occasionally. They have really sharp teeth and grip well. Good steel.

The Knipex (oddly shown at top of the link for vamplers) are essential. I have several of them and they have good steel, so sharp teeth, so they grip well. Like a new pipe wrench.

(I only type all this since you asked. gotta go.)

Mayor Zohran Mamdani fired back on social media after Trump made his comments, saying “Our values and our laws are not bargaining chips. We will always defend New Yorkers, even in the face of federal threats to withhold funding.”

Mayor Jihadi should have paid closer attention to his oath of office:

The oath of office for the New York City mayor involves a solemn promise to support the U.S. Constitution and the New York State Constitution, as well as to faithfully discharge the duties of the office.

138 Philosophical musing. I have my doubts that we will ever see true synthetic cognition, let alone in the next N years, because the limit case of the hardest problem to solve is the determination of truth, which is a contested task. There are no shortcuts, because every time one is found, it is immediately co-opted and exploited by con artists with outsized gain at stake -- and the largest is total social control, stealing everything and enslaving everyone to the ruling clique (such as under Marxism and/or Islam).

When the potential prize for winning is the total output of everyone forever, there is no end to what some will attempt. That's how you get the World Economic Forum. But some prizes go beyond even that to the spiritual, or so it seems, as materialism does not seem sufficient to explain the evils of Muhammed and George Soros.

So, I take the enemies of civilization seriously. I think they're often nihilistic liars who neither know nor care if their own words are true, but I think their goal (which they lie about) is serious. But I don't take AI seriously. I think that it can't even be iterated into something that can tell what's going on, since that's a category error.

150 Evening, Doof, and ONT Horde.

Not overly impressed with the Vampliers. If you are going to use them end-on to back out a screw, the serrations on the jaw tips should be cut the other way.

Pro tip: for Phillips and slot screws where the driver bit tends to cam out of the recess on the screw head, dip the tip of the screw driver into some coarse-grade valve grinding compound, and try again. It will double the grip, at least. Commonly lets you develop enough torque to snap the screw head right off, if the screw is well and truly stuck.

203 AOP, snapping off the screw head is ok if you are working on sheetrock or similar. But on my roadster or my truck or, in the old days, on an aircraft, that just leads to another problem.
Posted by: LRob in OK at January 13, 2026 11:02 PM (47diA)

Well, obviously one should take steps to free up the stuck threads before snapping the screwhead off. Just pointing out that the valve grinding compound stunt really does work amazingly well. I have other tricks for removing broken screws, too.

You can vastly improve an ordinary "flat Blade" screwdriver by grinding the tip such that, seen end-on, it looks a little like a convex lens: thick at the middle, thin at the edges. Subtle, middle maybe 20% thicker than the edges. Makes a huge increase in grip.

Decent price for Victor, which is a good brand. Don't know where they are made now, though. Harbor Freight has an "Olsen" Victor-style outfit for $349. Tote with two small tanks, regulators, hoses, torch handle, cutting and welding tips, and goggles. They have more comprehensive kits as well.

Also check Craiglist, and local swap meets and flea markets. Good welding torches last nearly forever. Hoses get old and porous, and should be replaced every 20 years or so.

250 I scored a huge win today on the weed-whacking front. Spent some hours working on the 40-dollar lawn mower I bought yesterday. Bought some new fuel hose, cleaned out the carburetor, and it runs fine. 5.5 HP Honda engine. Took off the power drive mechanism for the front wheels, bolted the wheels back on, and took 3 cuts on the front of the mower deck with a cutoff disc in my angle grinder, exposing about 15 inches of the forward arc of the blade.

Fired it up, and psuhed it into a patch of 3-foot tall mallow weeds. Slash! Splatter! Topple! I was knocking them down like a combine knocks down wheat straws. In less than an hour, I had completely nuked the entire weed crop, save for a few stragglers too close to obstacles for the blade to reach. It was shooting jets of mulched weed guts over a six foot chain link fence. And into it, too. The fence is well decorated now. My neighbor came out and shot video of the slaughter.

263 'Way back at #127, Old Yeller! said: …John saying the Beatles were more popular than Christ was a great stunt. Lots of people upset, religious folks burning records, but the whole world was talking about it.…

My recollection, my lasting impression, is that what John said about Beatles being more popular than Christ among young people was not a stunt, but sincerely meant, and despite how it was taken,* he did NOT consider that a positive thing nor was he comparing himself, or the group to Jesus. But it was (relatively) true, and the decline in Christianity (especially in England) continues.

(*I know, in this day and age, it's hard to believe the media or "interested parties" could take someone's words out of context and blow them out of proportion.🙄

"More popular than Jesus"
https://w.wiki/HSVg

Then John came out with a bumbling attempt at an apology (displaying his own lack of sound theology: "God as a thing") and that somewhat made it worse.
https://youtu.be/Fe9Z8GtB08s

By that point, it was a damned if you do or don't position, anyway. People still get p'o'd for their view of it.

I was and remain aghast at seeing all their albums burned, though. What a loss.

Jet, Band On The Run, Junior's Farm, Helen Wheels...

Paul without John easily veered into the over commercial
John without Paul easily veered into the under commercial

But if they hadn't split sooner or later there would have been many mediocre at best Beatles albums.

Naw. That's when you break out the MIG welder, and weld some sort of "handle" onto the stubborn screw. Gives you some purchase on it, and the heat-cool cycle helps break whatever bond (rust, galling, glue, etc.) that has made it seize in the hole. If "handle" breaks off, rinse and repeat. Multiple heat-cool cycles work wonders.

Don't know if peeps remember the addict friend I had saved over the summer. He passed away last Thursday, homeless and alone. The last text I got was Tues night begging for $20 for food. Which I ignored. Because it never ends. Well, now it has. And I don't feel at all guilty. His girlfriend was planning on coming back from North Carolina after her parents spent an ungodly amount of money to put her through safe detox. Love ya Chris but your death probably saved her life. Fentynyl is a very stupid drug. If you find that someone you care about is using, beat them half to death with a spoon and then get them off the sht. Even if that means replacing their Stupidity with Meth or Heroin.

Most of the homeless are either insane or have managed to fck over every friend or family member that cared about them. They exist on theft to exist and fund their drug fix. I think I gave this guy and his girl $10k over the summer for food, camping supplies, cell phone bills etc and STILL he was always looking for an angle to rip me off.

I credit Trump for shutting the border down. It sent a shockwave through the homeless addict community in Dallas. Everything suddenly tripled in price. Although I remember a famous quote about another drug epidemic - something about how it ended because it killed all its clients

Yep.

There's a housing situation (I forget the feel-good-lie of a name they've given to it) being built in my town. A place for the "homeless" to go and "recover" or whatever. Hopefully there will be drug-testing required for tenancy, but don't know for sure how that'll work out.

I'm not heartless, not at all. It's just that I've been burned *personally* by a couple of these fake "in recovery" a-holes.

You want to believe that somebody is gonna straighten their life out. You want to help the downtrodden. You want to know that you've done the right thing for a fellow human!

Mostly, though? They're scamming. Yet again! Yeah, just clean-up long enough to re-establish some cred, and the cycle starts again.

399 I am cold about addicts in practice. You can't fix them, and they will destroy you if you try. But from a safe distance, I can feel bad for some of them. I see a fair amount of criminal cases and cases involving termination of parental rights. The things people do to kids, you wouldn't do to test monkeys.

Too many residential journeyman electricians running romex think they can jump into the industrial world, troubleshooting live circuits without there being consequences for them touching live equipment they know nothing about. It can be humorous, also deadly.

Whatever. Roll the dice. I've seen a lot of guys get fucked up.

My last project, a small industrial plant, not even a footing in the ground and the power company was balking about not having the juice. At issue were a couple of machines which drew 1200A at 480V. Not being a power guy I held my tongue until the fifth meeting on the problem then rose my hand hand pointed out that, I am not a power guy, but do not get why you keeping talking about 1200A when the plans show 800A...

437 >> >12,470V is pretty common here,

That's the standard distribution line voltage out here with Duke, which I just call 7200V for the phase to neutral.

Duke has its particular "style" of the look of their pole wiring. Other utilities around the general area here in the SC/NC area have different styles.

I was downstate a bit one time, and noticed something looked different. It was Duke, but the "style" looked a bit different. I realized it was the insulators were bigger, and more "bells" where they used those. That was double, 14,400V to ground.

438 My dad succumbed to prostate cancer, after 12 years' battle. He had skipped his annual bone scans after a couple years of remission. Don't know if it would've mattered, really. Bone metastasis is the Big Bad Thing and little can be done but palliative treatment at that point. (???)

Uncle (dad's BiL) survived prostate cancer-- completely. Got his treatment and basically was cured & lived another 40+ years after initial dx.

A co-worker had it too, and when he got bone mets, it was so painful that he took a bottle-full of pills to escape it... Very sad!

The 1kV/mile rule of thumb is evident. If reasonably balanced, the line-to-line voltage governs, and so "7200" gets you about 13 miles, which they can push a little more than that.

Down there way out in the country where I noticed the 14400, it was much longer runs. Made perfect sense. It looked weird to me, with the bigger insulators on top of the poles and transformers.

When I moved here a few years ago I had a lawn service fertilize the lawn and give it it's treatments. The dude before me never did shit with it. He said "its a country yard", meaning it looks good enough without any effort. I should have listened, after the lawn service I had a dust bowl. 3/4 of the lawn was dead and replaced by dirt, because 3/4 of the lawn wasn't grass to start with, so the weed killer killed my weed lawn. It took 2 years to bring it back after seeding the shit out of it, but now its decent. I came to terms with it, its a country yard, don't push it. lol

Are there pests that damage or destroy your crop?

Could be poor pollination: plant some flowers nearby to encourage pollinators, or use a small brush to apply pollen from flower to flower on your pumpkin plants

Could be high heat: Maybe plant where there will be shade at midday, but good sunlight in morning/evening.

Could be overwatering: Soak well only when soil is dry to depth of an inch or two. Don't plant near where lawn-watering occurs.

Posted by: JQ at January 14, 2026 03:47 AM (rdVOm)

464 Blondie, poor pollination is highest on the list.

Posted by: JQ at January 14, 2026 03:51 AM (rdVOm)

I think it's a combo of too much heat and too much water -- I can't control it because the patch is irrigated. They're getting double doses of excess!

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at January 14, 2026 03:54 AM (Jxa0O)

466 Ugh, hit send too soon...

Pumpkins have both male and female flowers. Search for pics... Only the females will produce pumpkins, but must be pollinated by male flowers.

The female flowers are the ones with the little swelling on their stem. Male flowers usually appear first, but the plants will keep producing both as the season progresses.

Posted by: JQ at January 14, 2026 03:57 AM (rdVOm)

467 My GFF grows pumpkins every year & says she must pollinate by hand to get a good crop, even though she has a lot of other flowers.
