Former President Bill Clinton appears to have defied a congressional subpoena to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday morning. Clinton was compelled to sit for a sworn closed-door deposition in the House's bipartisan probe into Jeffrey Epstein, but Fox News Digital did not see him before or after the scheduled 10 a.m. grilling. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., had threatened to begin contempt of Congress proceedings against Clinton if he did not appear Tuesday. Comer said Tuesday morning, "We will move next week in the House Oversight Committee ... to hold Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress." "I think everyone knows by now Bill Clinton did not show up. And I think it's important to note that this subpoena was voted on in a bipartisan manner by this committee," Comer told reporters after formally ending the deposition. "No one's accusing Bill Clinton of any wrongdoing. We just have questions. And that's why the Democrats voted, along with Republicans, to subpoena Bill Clinton." He said "not a single Democrat" showed up to the deposition on Tuesday. ... Hillary Clinton had also been subpoenaed to appear on Wednesday but likely will not show up. The Clintons' attorney sent Comer a letter confirming they're challenging the legality of the subpoenas issued against them. "[T]he Subpoenas issued to President and Secretary Clinton are invalid and legally unenforceable. Mindful of these defects, we trust you will engage in good faith to de-escalate this dispute," reads the letter, obtained by Fox News Digital. ... People think subpoenas are some legally powerful tool that amounts to The Power of Christ Compels You. They ain't.
I've advised clients to duck subpoenas, to object to them, to challenge them, to basically wipe their asses with them. Sure, maybe after rounds of contempt proceedings and 18 months of bullshit, maybe a judge finally orders my client to appear or produce documents. Maybe.
But until a judge formally orders compliance with a subpoena, they are basically meaningless pieces of paper.

My understanding is that the Committee that issued the subpoena votes to pursue Contempt of Congress charges. Then they have three options if it passes:
1. Send to DOJ for indictment of a Federal Misdemeanor that would include fines and up to a year in the pokey.
2. Pursue Civil Contempt charges in Federal Court which takes forever to resolve.
3. A dusty old process called Inherent Contempt which gives the Congress the ability to arrest and detain. This hasn't been applied in ages, but you can bet it will be once the Dems get back in power.

Gum up the works with meaningless drivel and processes to run out the clock on statutes of limitations as well as President Trump's term in office. Once a new POTUS is sworn in, things change. Either a Republican POTUS will have to start all over again or a Dem POTUS will make it all go away.

Yes and no. Congress has the power to issue subpoenas. But if I get served with a Congressional subpoena and say "fuck off," Congress has limited remedies to sanction or compel me to comply. For sanctions with real teeth, Congress has to go to a judge for a formal order.

Clinton's overall strategy seems a bit odd to me on this one. He's looking scared and guilty by refusing to testify. If I were him, I would voluntarily show up and testify. He could easily answer "don't recall" to almost anything.

I mentioned this earlier; several of *biden's former aids stiffed Congressional subpoenas and refused to appear to testify about the autopen debacle. None of them are in jail, AFAIK. And it wasn't like they claimed some sort of immunity or showed up and took the 5th a hundred times.

I’m pretty sure I could not just ignore a subpoena and just have my lawyer issue a letter on the matter. Nor would any judge just say “Oh, OK” to it.

He's really not a conservative except if you think that wanting to conserve sanity is some sort of niche and shouldn't be the mainstream.

Just another stupidity folk tale from the left's fever swamps. They don't think ICE can arrest citizens, don't believe they are committing a crime when obstructing ICE arrests or hitting them, trying to grab their guns, etc., or throwing shit at them.
This is because they get away with that shit all the time in blue city protests and the police rarely do jack shit to the pampered pets.
So it goes to their thinking that ICE might pepper spray us, use tasers, bean bag shotgun rounds, or hit us, but not SHOOT us with real bullets for violence against them.
ICE are not riot cops, they are there to snatch armed and dangerous criminals so of course they are armed. They are not riot police in friendly cities.

FWIW, some might know this but I was involved in Arkansas politics during the Bill and Hill years. Father was a local government official, Bill and Hill were everywhere in Arkansas at the time, and I worked for a congress critter and campaigns. So I've talked to Clinton over the phone as I ran the Congressman's decision desk if you will for the election eve parties. Clinton loved to talk politics and I would get calls (while dialing out and receiving to get the most recent voting reports in the precincts), just to compare numbers or to get the Congress critter on the phone to talk to Bill.
Arkansas was a very rural state and governors had a two year term as well as other state officers, so Billy Jeff was always campaigning to the point I think he actually talked to all the voters in Arkansas at one time or another. Arkansas only had about 1.6 million at the time and Clinton ran every two years from 1974 to 1990 for office when they changed to terms to four years.
