The "farmhouse at Waterloo" refers primarily to Hougoumont, a fortified farmhouse complex fiercely contested during the Battle of Waterloo (1815) as a key defensive anchor for Wellington's right flank, and also to La Haye Sainte, another vital farmhouse compound in the center, crucial for the Allied defense against French breakthroughs, with both locations now preserved historical sites in Belgium Posted by: Archimedes at January 14, 2026 09:40 AM (Riz8t) 69

James Talarico has demon face. Posted by: George Costanza at January 14, 2026 09:03 AM ( Ah, so you can see it, too! Everything about the guy is insidious. Very unsettling. I've always wondered about this. Whether it's Ted Bundy or a politician, a large portion of people automatically trust a young, clean-cut person with a winning smile, no matter what flashing red warning lights are going off all around them. Not to say there aren't subtle operators who get by me, I'm sure it's more than I think. But ever since I was a little boy I've been able to immediately sense when certain people are completely evil. It's just an instinct, and a lot of people have it, perhaps a majority. It's like a lot of people are simply missing a survival mechanism. I think if these people were wild animals instead of humans, most of them would die before adulthood. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 14, 2026 09:53 AM (BI5O2) 134

Vernet is very good with battle scenes: smoke, clashing bodies, and so forth. But he is also very good at showing the results of war to those involved. The horse and dog, faithful and trained, can't understand anything except loss and confusion. Why is their master unresponsive? Why is their loyalty not enough to help him? There are consequences for innocents to the 'glory' of battle.
Part of the power in the painting is the realistic appearance and poses of the wounded (fatally?) man and the animals. The scene isn't dramatic but the accurate details and colors make it very real and keep the viewer's attention while they absorb the emotional aspects. It is a sobering and effective image. 234 Half of Trump's 2020 loss was because of all the violent protests deranged Lefties did during Trump's first term. Normies don't want to see non-stop, unhinged, violent rioting. It worked before, and they're looking to do it again...and it kind of looks initially successful. Trump's poll numbers are low, ICE polls terribly.
However, I think Trump leared from his first term, and he isn’t going to passively pussyfoot around protests and leave it to the states to manage.
