Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Something serious, courtesy of Biden's Dog:

We have personal experience with this topic here in the wild and wooly Central Valley of California, where even smaller dogs can be dangerous when they run in packs. VDH alluded to this in Mexifornia,

Most recently, our little blind kitten (who got over at least part of his blindness) escaped from the garage and was killed along with one of the old garden kitties he had befriended.

A few years ago, our precious little Shaggy the Dog was killed by a gang of pit bulls which ripped down part of our fence. See his photo with the PetMorons below. The dogs who killed Shaggy were kicked out of town by the sheriff, along with their owners (who had their own problems). The dogs had shown early signs of chasing a man on a bicycle, too.

I also know someone who has raised a much-loved champion Pit Bull. He kept her on leash in public.

Meet The PetMorons

This is our dear departed Shaggy. Hard to believe that he was given to us by a neighbor because he was causing family conflict. Probably involving urine.

I think he was about ten years old at the time of this photo. He was as sweet as he looked. Had some quirks.

We had a new baby bird enter this world this morning (Jan 7). As some of you will recall I did a lot of posts from the last brood, but this time I’ll just be posting milestones.

He/she will get their first feeding this evening, and every 3-4 hours for the next 2 weeks.

We are expecting another hatching in the next few days.

Regards,
David

A few pics of our dragon - she’s been featured before. Our son rescued her 7 years ago, and she was in such poor health that she was not expected to survive. This January she’ll be 12…
>>> She likes our enclosed porch on sunny days and has been very well behaved around the Christmas trees.

Later:

n eveninng.jpg

She was awake for a while this afternoon and evening, and this is what we’ll see for next few days to a week. She’s lying on her favorite heated rock and quite snug

Fun photos of Nayro! Thanks for sending them in.

Staffordshire Terriers are another breed of pitbull that's supposed to be so kind and gentle (and protective) around children that in Old Blighty it's nicknamed "The Nanny Dog".

But, I wonder if that reputation is deserved or are they just as bitey and vicious and unpredictable as your average pitfall seems to be.

9 We have had to watch for packs of street dogs, and around town there have been other troublesome dogs, including a chow.

There were a couple of rottweillers across the street which were not confined before the neighborhood was real developed and one day the male started to get a funny look in his eye and we didn't dare approach him. He disappeared soon afterward.

Our Troy was a huge dog who had run on the street and protected us and our other dogs from street dogs by playing with approaching street dogs.

He also maneuvered an adolescent pit bull away from me once, sitting on him a couple of times like a mama dog. He backed me through the front door. The pit wouldn't give up.

10 A few years ago Boy F. was bitten by a pittie mix b"h he wasn't very seriously injured but he is still fearful of most dogs.

11 Most pit bulls I've seen are leashed and the owners are careful when in public. I'm guessing NoVA has some laws that are actually enforced. The Coven of Karens who rule the area don't want bit either. I did meet a very friendly pit bull once. At a pub in Scotland. I sat down with my beer and this PB started scampering towards me, jumped in my lap (it was REALLY heavy) and I just petted it. It seemed quite happy. A female dog I think. Not aggressive at all. Just happy and dumb. That can probably turn on a dime though.

12 In June I adopted a 10 year old ChiWeenie because the owner (a friend of my daughter's fiance) was going to send it back a shelter. I find that disgusting.

Anyway, although he's small he snarls and barks at my other dogs who are much larger. I am so far the only human that can touch him.

Does anyone have any sage advice on how to get him socialized?

We have had various kinds of pit bulls around us, and known people with pit bulls. Next door, the stocky kind, mother of the house afraid of them. One wrapped its chain around a column at our house once. I lured another back home with an ice cream cone. Never had a problem with them. But I've never dealt with more than one at a time.

Had friends with a pit bull which seemed naturally nervous and they had kids. Never felt safe around that dog.

16 A little girl I knew was bitten by a cousin's pittie because she touched it while it was eating. Her parents were having marital difficulties and she had the hospital call me to hold her hand while she got stitches.

The rule about muzzling pitties around kids may make sense.

Though touching dogs while they eat is not a good idea in general. Kids need to be taught, too.

18 I put a boot to a huge pits ass just yesterday. It was attacking a neighbor in front of my house. He was defending himself with a stun gun and trying to keep his dog from fighting it. I came across my yard at about a hundred miles and hour and tried to punt its ass to pluto. He went airborne and landed on his side and took off with a limp (which I have a slight one now) This is the second time this dog has attacked him. He went to the hospital for the first one about a year ago. Nobody knows where it comes from. Next time I see it... it is going to die. In fact I hope I caused enough internal injury to kill it.
Animal control was prowling for him the rest of the day but I don't know if they got him.

19 We had a pitbull cross mutt. Quite a sweet dog to people and other dogs and was good with our cat, but if Ole (Ole and Lena) locked in on something (rabbit in an large pipe etc) forget about getting his attention. And he was attacked by a chow once. Boy howdy after that if he saw that chow Ole took after it first, never damaged the chow. I think that OCD focus on a target is why the breed is more dangerous as street dogs or with bad owners.

20 I think I may have another cat. Really wasn't looking for one. This is a young female that showed up over a week ago. Doesn't really have a winter coat. I found that she was at a neighbors for a bit, but their dog didn't like her. Mr Trouble is not happy. I am going to have to get her in to be neutered pretty soon. Not sure if she is six months old yet. Black and white with a white tipped tail. No name yet

21 All four of the kittens introduced by the new little mama cat at our house can now be touched. The little black one was the hold-out. He (or she) finally decided to scamper over my foot at playtime. He has sniffed my finger for a while, but now I can pet him when he eats. The garage is being torn up again.

All cute, all different.

26 Afternoon, Pet Folken!

I'm none too sanguine around most dogs, and pit bulls have a fearsome reputation. Better safe, etc.

The Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are doing well. Both were sleeping with me just now, Stirling the black cat along my left side and Dagny the little gray Siberian up nar my head. When I woke up I thought she wasn't there until I sat up and saw her by the headboard.

Dagny has been a little less aloof in recent days. If she's sleeping or dozing on the table or a chair, I can scoop her up. Miss Linda puts a cushion on my lap and I set the little cat on it . . . and she stays for some minutes as we pet her. Hey, maybe one of these years she'll actually hop into my lap on her own.

We saw a couple of live Pallas's Cats at the Birmingham Zoo in 2008. They are quite a bit bigger than your usual house cat, though not as huge as a bobcat or lynx. I read about them, with an accompanying illustration, in one of my kids' encyclopedias when I was young. Never had seen one in a zoo until B'ham. They don't often show up on nature shows.

Dagny looks a tiny bit like one -- except she does not have the flat head and low ears.

43 Pitt Bull is an umbrella term for American Staffardshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and mixes of these breeds. Unfortunately, very poor breeding practices have resulted in unstable dogs - which is true for lot of breeds in many ways. Of course there are outliers who are super sweet, super friendly dogs - but it’s really difficult to know who is an outlier and who isn’t.

The issue with breeds like rotties or GSD is the standard poorly bred ones, which make the well bred ones share in bad reputations, but also people who get them and haven’t a clue how to handle or what to do with a high prey drive dog. You can’t take a dog whose sole purpose in life is to be a guard dog and then be shocked they are protective to both real and perceived (by them) threats. It is not fair to the dog to ignore training them, ignore giving them an outlet, ignore what the heck their breed is. I have had GSDs forever, I had the bestest girl Doberman. But they were all trained, and I mean trained. They were worked daily. They knew their job. And now I have this Shiba. 😂

44 I am very sorry about the loss of your dog, NEC. I should have said that as a start. It makes me so angry that people ruin dogs the way they do and it makes me angry there are people own dogs who shouldn’t have pet rocks. The consequences are felt by those who do the right things, like you. It’s heartbreaking.

45 Stirling just climbed into my lap for a few minutes. He'd have stayed longer, but he decided to close his sharp teeth on my wrist and then my robed forearm. Not a bite or snap, more like "I want to possess this." He only started doing this lately. When he does, I scruff him, say "No!" firmly, and eject him from my lap. I hope that will discourage him.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 10, 2026 04:45 PM (wzUl9)

46 Pitbulls are a handful. I rescued a couple of pitbulls off of the streets after they had been abandoned from the fight game. They tend to be aggressive and are asocial.

Not bad, just not something you want around children.

Aggressive, mostly male. Not so much female.

Because you are a responsible dog owner. Bless you. I am tired of people telling owners like you they are mean for muzzling their dogs on walks, etc etc. No, they know what they have and they are responding accordingly, and giving their dog the best life as a result. If someone breaks into your house, however, that is on them and if they are chomped by one, the other or both dogs, well bad have consequences!

48 My last GSD was a goofball, a trained goofball, but a goofball. My neighbor asked if he could borrow sugar. We told him Wolfgang was in the house, we weren’t sure if going in was a great idea, despite Wolfie knowing the neighbor very well. Neighbor went in anyway, got the sugar, Wolfgang was fine, happy to see him, walked to the kitchen with him, got a cookie, all great. Until the neighbor tried to leave with his cup of sugar. Wolfie said “nope, sorry, no can do.” He pushed the neighbor on the couch, and sat there staring at him, growling anytime the neighbor moved. My ex-husband had to come home from work and call the dog off.

59 Thanks, KT, for another fine pet thread.

Ony the old black cat and Daisy the active young Malinois say hello. The year so far has been good. Daughter and Son visiting frequently with their two dogs each. Daisy enjoys the playtime.

Lately, Ony has taken to lying on top of me whenever I'm lying down. If I fall asleep, I notice she's always gone when I awaken. FWIW.

Daisy continues to be a great family member. A couple of mornings lately, like this morning, she has awakened me to be let outside. She no longer paws at me nor barks nor does her head-shaking ear-flapping collar-jingling. She just stands at the bedroom door and whimpers slightly, just enough. Even if it's still very early for me, I don't ignore it: it's part of our partnership. Besides, she got me up in time for the coffee and prayer thread.

65 ANY dog, you do not know what is lurking in their wetware. You don't know what has happened in just the few weeks they have been alive even if you get them as a puppy. Whoever had reef managed to damage him pretty throughly in 12 weeks. I am working on it, but his age is meaning he is acting out on a ton of stuff that I don't know it will affect him.

Example. Taking him for a walk last night. Going back up the steps to the apartment we get to the top landing and there is a door right beside the stairs across the breezway from my apartment. Someone was hanging something on the door, so they were hammering nails I think. Completely terrified Reef. He did not want to come up on the landing and just went into complete terror mode.

My Chigi (Chihuahua Corgi) is the happiest dog that has owned us. She has a smile all the time.

She came from a rescue place, daughter adopted her but couldn't keep her in her apartment because she is full of energy and needs a yard.

We are crazy about her and thank God for blessing us with her.
