Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Trump Announces US Withdrawal from 66 International Organizations and TreatiesDid he decide to do this as a sop to the hard-core Paulites angry about him using American force to vindicate American interests? To balance out his "neocon" capture of Maduro? Maybe, but it's a win-win for me.President Trump has ordered the United States to withdraw from 66 international organizations and treaties, delivering one of the most sweeping breaks yet from what his administration views as a bloated globalist bureaucracy siphoning American taxpayer dollars with little accountability or return. At the center of the move is the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, the umbrella treaty that underpins nearly every major international climate agreement and hosts the annual U.N. climate summits. The decision prompted immediate outrage from European officials, with EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra lamenting that the world's largest economy was "retreating" from what he called the backbone of global climate action, adding that Europe would press on regardless. Trump, by contrast, has been blunt that he sees no reason for Americans to bankroll institutions premised on what he has long dismissed as exaggerated or fraudulent claims about man-made climate catastrophe, especially while U.S. energy producers are being asked to shoulder the cost.At Hot Air, Ed Morrissey noted that the Senate had actually ratified the gay Climate Change treaty, but he also points out it's only a "framework" without any definite commitments so even without a formal withdrawal, Trump can just completely ignore it. @BabakTaghvaee1 · 3h #Breaking: it is estimated that nearly 1 million people are out in the streets of #Mashhad, the second-largest city of #Iran, tonight. The number of protesters is unprecedented, and the regime’s security forces have withdrawn from the city out of fear. They are nowhere to be seen, knowing these angry crowds will punish them. The Islamic regime is closer than ever to its fall. The engagement rate of Iranians in anti-regime protests has exceeded 4%, marking the beginning of the end for the regime, with defections from Iran’s regular armed forces now expected. #IranProtests Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at January 08, 2026 06:46 PM (t/2Uw) 19

Rubio's letter about this ends very, very well:
As this list begins to demonstrate, what started as a pragmatic framework of international organizations for peace and cooperation has morphed into a sprawling architecture of global governance, often dominated by progressive ideology and detached from national interests. From DEI mandates to "gender equity" campaigns to climate orthodoxy, many international organizations now serve a globalist project rooted in the discredited fantasy of the "End of History." These organizations actively seek to constrain American sovereignty. Their work is advanced by the same elite networks--the multilateral "NGO-plex"-- that we have begun dismantling through the closure of USAID. We will not continue expending resources, diplomatic capital, and the legitimizing weight of our participation in institutions that are irrelevant to or in conflict with our interests. We reject inertia and ideology in favor of prudence and purpose. We seek cooperation where it serves our people and will stand firm where it does not. I also promise you this - most of these organizations have provisions saying, in effect, that the organizations must have "equal representation" for all members. Meaning they were packed with developing world types, educated in the U.S.
The U.S. would get one vote on these organizations, while 130 countries would get equal say, we picked up the bill but had no power over the organization. That is the problem. It's why so many of these organizations were useless - they were basically the same as Somali day cares, except for developing world bureaucrats. Statement from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident. Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot and injured by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood. We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a "training ground" for militarized agents, and the "full force" threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed. Federal militarization undermines effective, community‑based public safety, and it runs counter to the values that define our region. I will use every legal and legislative tool available to protect our residents' civil and human rights. Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at January 08, 2026 07:32 PM (9aVck) 338

Mostly local planes and enthusiasts, but somebody knew somebody and got Barksdale to send over an A-10 to entertain the locals - that pilot was awesome, he was the star of the show. What I remember most was him doing a big loop - forested area btw - and on the bottom of the loop, not far from the runway, he dropped below the tree line and out of sight! For a moment we’re all wondering is this it? Are we gonna see a big boom? And then he pops back above the trees, full throttle, skimming the tree tops as he headed back towards us. Awesome display.

Posted by: Puddleglum at work at January 08, 2026 07:31 PM (G1ktt) There is a big traffic circle there on the far side of the pool. Perfect place. Posted by: Kindltot Where? The only traffic circle I know about is across the bridge, near Arlington Nat Cemetery. Maybe somewhere between Washington Monument and the Capitol, but even that's iffy. yeah, I had her on Twitter many years ago, and then I abandoned Twitter for years, but still have her followed on X. 422 Always assumed Starlink would be postured to provide service in Iran for a situation like this, but wondered about the ground station part. So one does need a base station of some sort. Awfully thoughtful of Mossad to have smuggled them in.
Posted by: rhomboid at January 08, 2026 07:50 PM (U/Byj) I *think* (not sure) that one thing Elon can do is "unlock" Starlink in certain regions, so that not only is it available, but basically any modern satellite reciever can access it, not just Starlink recievers. I don't know any details, but I do remember hearing somewhere that that was a thing. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 08, 2026 07:51 PM (06Hmj) 432

I got to fly the simulator just before the aircraft went away. Very cool. Actual cockpit, surrounded by screens, and when you bank and the horizon and your instruments move, you really feel like you are inverted.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 08, 2026 07:50 PM (U/Byj) Well like your internet connection you need a modem to the network. With Starlink, that connects to the satellites in the air instead of a phone system. Posted by: Oldcat at January 08, 2026 07:52 PM (8avO+) 436
Also, can't most new cell phones act as a Starlink receiver, too? And then be used as a hotspot to connect other devices?

Your Kurdish Conflicts Tonight:
Some PKK affiliate reportedly is fighting with local thugs in western Iran, to be expected, but still welcome. Historically Iranian Kurds have not been as much into serious separatist activities as their Iraqi, Turkish, and Syrian brethren, but all hands on deck here could help. Speaking of Syrian Kurds, the SDF is involved in some serious fighting with "Syrian" military elements in/near Aleppo. Helpfully, today Turkey indicated its forces could enter the fray if requested. SDF's biggest partner has been the US. Good times! No word if the joint Israeli-Syrian ski resort on Mt Hermon - managed by a multinational team of Druze - might compensate for "Syria"'s ongoing difficulties. Andy Ngo @MrAndyNgo Breaking: Two people have just been shot by Border Patrol during an immigration operation in Portland, Ore. Anti-ICE accounts have circulated screenshots alleging that a 911 dispatcher leaked to them information about a call for police assistance. The call log also shows a 911 call from Border Patrol stated that a husband and wife who were shot almost ran the agent(s) over. ABC News is reporting that the shooting occurred near East Burnside and 141st Avenue. Last edited 3:55 PM · Jan 8, 2026 Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at January 08, 2026 07:58 PM (9aVck) 452

Posted by: rhomboid at January 08, 2026 07:50 PM (U/Byj) Starlink uses a small dish and small control box on the ground to hook your tablet/laptop/desktop to. Signals go to a satellite overhead, which relays them to a ground station that is connected to the internet. The ground station can be hundreds, or even thousands of miles away if the signals are bounced from satellite to satellite. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at January 08, 2026 07:59 PM (cEHXL) 453

Posted by: pookysgirl Feel sorry for them like the Army now. Our worst air bases were nicer in most cases than the main army bases I have been at. Enlisted housing is one area where a bunch of officers need to be courtmartialed and a bunch of wicked contractors need to be permanent fired and prosecuted under the false claims act. Same thing with meal services on a lot of Army bases. Posted by: whig at January 08, 2026 08:01 PM (WDjG6) 454
I will say though, this was back a ways, the nicest air bases I have ever been to were Canadian. At Comox AB, we had made to order omelets with fresh seafood as fillers in the enlisted mess.
It was apparent though in the enlisted mess as the French speakers sat in a group, the English speakers sat in another group, and the Newfies were like the dogs, wanting to be friends with everyone and thus circling between groups. Funny really. Posted by: whig at January 08, 2026 08:03 PM (WDjG6) 455
If carp are so silent, why are they always bitching about stuff?
Posted by: Bulg at January 08, 2026 07:39 PM (77rzZ) They aren't all that silent. I remember feeding popcorn to carp at a marina on Lake Mead. Big white bastards, maybe a foot long. They went into a regular feeding frenzy; a dense mass of fish, and new ones would swim up on top of the mob and come right out of the water, and champ their jaws, going "glup, glup, glup". Could have made a horror movie scene of it. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 08, 2026 08:06 PM (8zz6B) 456

I am sure my friends on the Atlantic Coast of FL have hair on fire over this by President Trump. They have a friend (whom we met and he was quite odd) from the UK who used to work for UNESCO.
He was quite odd because he wore white socks with sandals to the beach when he came to FL. Probably other odd stuff but that's all I remember. Somehow I never ghosted them during the Barky or Biden Errors, but they seem to be doing a good job of it during Trump II. You find out who your true friends are these days, and I do love them, but am flying under the radar til the next time I am there. It's time to get out of the UN altogether. It is basically run by dysfunctional criminal countries.
There may be one reason to remain in the UN: to veto dangerous actions by the UN Security Council. But that is the only reason for remaining. Posted by: Ralph at January 08, 2026 09:37 PM (8WZD4) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0853 seconds. |
