The slice of urban landscape over on the left has a very Hopper-esque vibe. So does the red brick building and the window frame . . . but at that point any resemblance to Hopper's style disappears.
He and Hopper were contemporaries for a number of years. I wonder if they met, or knew each other socially, and if Hopper's work influenced Evergood's. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 09, 2026 09:39 AM (wzUl9) 46

Not to get all architecturally picky or anything, but the number of courses of bricks between the two windows isn't enough for the height between one floor and another.
Posted by: Pedantic Pete at January 09, 2026 10:04 AM (2Ez/1) 159
I like the way he captured the movement of the birds and even how the bricks are painted. But the windows are dark and the interior feels empty despite the brighter colors in the painting. The birds are the only signs of life against the hard lines of the city. Even the tree branches are dead. What could have been a charming image of a little girl taking delight in the birds' antics has a sense of isolation, perhaps innocent desperation to connect with a living world. And her hands, in contrast to her face, belong to an old woman, not a child. Perhaps this interaction with life is as good as it will ever get for her.
Maybe I need more coffee but the overall sense of the painting is lonely and depressing. I looked at some of his other works. He seems to be trying to channel, badly, van Gogh but without any of the liveliness. Posted by: JTB at January 09, 2026 10:04 AM (yTvNw) 160

Posted by: one hour sober Bowe v. United States addresses the legal challenges of Michael Bowe regarding his conviction under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c) for using a firearm during a crime of violence, focusing on the implications of recent Supreme Court rulings. Background of the Case Michael Bowe was charged in 2008 with conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, attempted Hobbs Act robbery, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He pled guilty in 2009 and received a 288-month sentence, which included a mandatory consecutive 120-month term for the firearm conviction under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c). Starting in 2016, Bowe sought to challenge his § 924(c) conviction, arguing that changes in Supreme Court precedent, particularly the rulings in Johnson v. United States and United States v. Davis, meant that his underlying crimes no longer qualified as “crimes of violence” that could support the firearm conviction. Posted by: rickb223 at January 09, 2026 10:14 AM (KC3Wn) 193

ICE is not the victim
MAGA lies can’t hide the real damage done to people like Renee Nicole Good By Amanda Marcotte the true courage on display in this country is plenty visible in the video of Good’s killing. Not from the cowardly ICE agents that swarmed her car and shot at her as she appears to be driving away. But from the 37-year-old Good, her wife and the other ordinary citizens in the video who are yelling “shame” and standing up to masked, armed ICE agents in their streets. Like so many of us, Good could have stayed tucked safely away in her house, looking the other way while a bunch of hastily hired wannabe warriors terrorized her neighbors. But while much needs to be learned about what happened, it appears that Good died doing what so many other ordinary Americans have in recent months: standing up to the bullies that Trump unleashed on their communities. When interfacing with the public, however, ICE and their supporters inevitably come across as whiny babies playing dress-up...Heaven forbid any of these people stub a toe. We’ll never stop hearing about how it was like their entire leg was amputated. BREAKING: An “AUTONOMOUS ZONE” has been declared by leftists in Minneapolis, and is being referred to as a “NO-GO ZONE” for police
This zone spans for SEVERAL BLOCKS, and residents are BARRED from driving to their homes. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST END THIS. Makeshift barricades using trash and stolen materials are at ALL intersections, and “guards” are present at each. This looks almost IDENTICAL to CHAZ, or the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” in Seattle in 2020, where the city SURRENDERED a neighborhood to anarchists who made their own “laws.” CHAZ was famous for failed communism, death, theft, and vandalism, and as you’d imagine, they were commonplace in the zone. @KevinPosobiec and I went in undercover to take a look. If we had been discovered, we’d have been violently run out. It’s not as “friendly” as it seems. WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN. George Floyd went from violent drug dealer to saint.
Good is having the same journey it seems. Posted by: Really?? at January 09, 2026 10:31 AM (kgFPv) I don't think it's going to work. While Floyd dies of an over-dose (as the first autopsy report found -- later changed under pressure), the image of Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's back smirking at the camera was pretty powerful for those who didn't know or lied about the circumstances of Floyd's death. The video of the incident shows that Renee Good pointed her car directly at the ICE officer, and then struck him with the car. Additionally, she had been following ICE around all morning and was blocking the road before she got herself shot. I was just on the Tube of Ewes and the algorithm thought I would be interested in a CBS News clip -- easily over 75% of the comments were to the effect that Good had put herself in harm's way and the ICE officer was justified in defending himself. This in going to end up being an 80/20 issue with the Democrats supporting the minority position. Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at January 09, 2026 10:53 AM (pJWtt) 360

>>Just saw a clip on Trish Regan with a security guard outside a McDonald's with a sign on the door saying No ICE Agents allowed.
It's sh#tty, but better than being served food that's been tampered with. The owner/staff is giving them a heads-up they will not be well served. Also: Possible illegals onsite! Posted by: Lizzy at January 09, 2026 11:01 AM (NuV6c) 386

Oh and before I run away to do real life things...
Everyone in legacy media, even the New York post, are using old pics of her where she has long hair and looks sane. If they used the newer pics where she shaved her head and has the scary woke eyes and aging face, everyone would just take one look and go yeah, I'm sad she's dead but she clearly also has issues. But they choose these pics of their angel martyrs on purpose. But even the post fell for it! Posted by: LizLem at January 09, 2026 11:01 AM (gWBY1) 390
>>Most of that legal boilerplate is stuff that isn't immediately relevant, and may never be, but it's there to cover any foreseeable contingency if things don't go as planned
Right. That's my situation and why the lawyer who drafted the trust said not to worry about it as most of it doesn't matter going forward. Posted by: one hour sober at January 09, 2026 11:02 AM (Y1sOo) 391

351 The plot of Vertigo is just too implausible for me.
Love the setting, though. Sanu Juan Bautista was one of my favorite places in California that wasn't on the Monterey Peninsula. Sorry. They better pray there is no CWII.
Posted by: rickb223 at January 09, 2026 10:42 AM (KC3Wn) We better hope there's no CWII. The left is willing to sacrifice. The right isn't. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at January 09, 2026 11:06 AM (g8Ew8) 397

Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at January 09, 2026 11:02 AM (QGaXH) There's hardly a classic mystery, drama, or thriller that wouldn't be totally ruined by the insertion of a cellphone into the shenanigans.
