Things are heating up in Iran - on both sides.
On the one hand, regime forces on motorcycles are firing indiscriminately on protesters (similar to Venezuela). On the other hand: https://tinyurl.com/2v77crz8 Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at January 08, 2026 04:04 AM (gK5jz) 6

Evening and morning to all the late toilers and early risers! And insomaniacals, I should say. I went off to sleepy-bye early last night, and (as I should have expected) woke early as well. Grrrr.
Well. There is coffee. It's warmish and unpleasant for the time of year here, but that means I don't have to bundle up for a brisk walk later. And the furry thugs are galloping around as always. Posted by: pookysgirl, obviously struggling to sleep at January 08, 2026 *** Morning, Pooksygirl, Well, aside from the detail that I haven't seen anybody here (let alone a white man) wearing a three-piece suit and fedora in decades, it does look like they filmed it in the French Quarter. The white building at the far end behind the action suggests that they were shooting on one of the two one-block-long streets in the Quarter. The streets don't dead-end, but they run for one block only. The trumpet player does look like Louis Armstrong, and Scatman John calls him "Satch" (short for "Satchmo") and "Louis." But I have no idea what or where the night shots are supposed to be. What are "Fried Ergs"? I's fun and energetic, anyway. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 08, 2026 04:51 AM (wzUl9) 15
I looked up Scatman John. He was from El Monte, CA, and became an unlikely pop star, especially in Japan. The Wiki article says about the 1996 album Everybody Jam!: "In October, John prepared a new single called 'Everybody Jam!', inspired by jazz, his love, and a tribute to his childhood idol Louis Armstrong. In a 1996 interview, John explains why he was inspired by Louis:
'Louis was the first and strongest influence on my musical existence. There have been many masters of music, of soul, but for me Louis is the father of them all.' " Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 08, 2026 04:58 AM (wzUl9) 16

Today is Noir Day on Movies! At five am my time, they are running an early (1937) Henry Fonda flick where he co-stars with Sylvia Sidney, called, get this, You Only Live Once. "An ex-convict tries to live on the straight-and-narrow but finds disaster waiting." I'm tempted to settle down with my coffee and watch the whole thing.

So yesterday I had to go to the car shop. This was off a very busy major road, but here's what I saw outside-a beautiful winterberry holly plant:
https://tinyurl.com/2s8wc8zc In the shop was a very nice men wearing a large cross. It had some words around the cross. I didn't ask him what they were, ( maybe John 3:16) but I did thank him for his witness. So everyday if we ask I do believe God will show us something of himself/ his love, his creatively in nature, his presence, his work through other people. I am grateful to God for that. Just to babble in general about policing, not this specific case, the root cause of a lot of friction between police and and the people they do their policing at is the erosion and rot of the justice system as a whole.
There should be no real motivator to get violent with a cop who's arresting you, because you'll simply have your day in court and everything will be fine. If the courts are going to railroad you anyway just to make a buck and flex their power, suddenly it's a problem. (And if you are just a straight up criminal trying to get away with something by merking a cop, then you get your ass shot and the world is a better place, which is a victory condition.) If you're a cop, there should be no real motivator to shake down people who aren't doing anything wrong, because if you do bring in innocent people, and create friction in the community, the DA and the chief of police ought to be firing you, and possibly fining you for it too if it's egregious enough. This is all super Pollyanna/Pangloss kind of stuff. But fanciful or not, i have to figure it's at least the Platonic Ideal for the foundations of a not effed up society. Part of the "trust" in "high trust society". Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 08, 2026 06:15 AM (06Hmj) 51

I'm hoping they are checking into who's funding these anti ICE protests, because I doubt they're organic. However, some woman shot in MN after antagonizing ICE will probably not have the same resonance with black folks as George Floyd and "Black Lives Matter", which as we all know was a fraudulent group ( funded by Soros, I expect) and only enriched the founders of Big Large Mansions.

If you frame that story as "just a lady in her car getting shot by federal agents", none of it makes sense. If you frame it as "professional agitator spends entire day using her car like some kind of cow catcher on the front of the retard train and finally gets stopped by federal agents", it makes a lot more sense.

He explained you are subject to detention and arrest, right? That you are required to comply with lawful orders, and further blocking the road is not a legitimate or lawful means of protest or free speech. Right? Modern “leaders” are derelict in their duty. The sad thing is that Minnesota is largely good, solid squareheads who don't happen to live in the Twin Cities. Trump lost the state by 4, so there must have been a lot of people voting for him. Likely he lost the state due to the non-people who "voted" for Kamala. Speaking of dogs, my golden was hacking like she had something caught in her throat so I took her to the vet. Turns out she has kennel cough, even though she was vaccinated for it. I think she caught it a few weeks ago when I boarded her. I am leaving for vacation today so I couldn't board her. Luckily found other arrangements. The vet told me that shot is the least effective of all vaccines for dogs. Also they put her on hydrocodone for cough. I only gave her one of those and pitched the rest. I don't like that kind of stuff in my house

https://tinyurl.com/6w4wkh5m I'll have to see that at home. Rescue boy? Greyhounds are very good house dogs because they're a) lazy and b) graceful. He's a rescue that's being returned. And he's been a guest of ours through my wife's babysitting service so there won't be too much of a transition. And yes, lazy. I like a breed where "Check that he's breathing" is a normal thing to say. I'll try to get pictures of him on the Saturday Pet Thread. Posted by: NR Pax at January 08, 2026 07:15 AM (jjoN6) 118

I generally dislike re-naming things for political reasons, but if the mullahs fall, I'd be happy to see Iran get called something else.
Even if it just changed to Eran. Doesn't need to be called Persia. Just something to say definitively "we're not that anymore". Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 08, 2026 07:19 AM (06Hmj) 126

"Persia" was a xenonym -- from the Greeks, I think. "Eran" which morphed into Iran was always the endonym. It was the Shah's father who started insisting it be called Iran externally. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 08, 2026 07:24 AM (w6EFb) 129

Bose has released technical documentation for the SoundTouch APIs, allowing hackers to create open source solutions.
----- Kudos to Bose. INMSHO, they're overpriced and overhyped, slightly above middlin' quality gear, but this, this they done good. The reflex, of course, is to demand that "the government" do something. Write regs, create commissions etc. No, what we need is a couple of class action suits with multi-million payouts against the likes of John Deere.
