Yeah, alternate choices. Such as, I got drafted or signed up for the Navy during Vietnam, but wound up studying and working with computers in Germany, then went into the field when I got out. Made a *lot* of money much earlier in my life and was able to retire earlier. Maybe moved and lived in different climates and places.

Brezhnev's mind was mush as of autumn 1979. He was Biden-tier.
The people making the decisions were KGB (Andropov), the Party, and the diplomatic corps (Gromyko). I'd say the military too but they were outmaneuvered.
I think you are probably right that the Soviets were looking at revolutionary Iran and thinking that the mullahs weren't going to last against the Tudeh and other leftist parties. The US under Carter obviously was a joke.

I do that too, toby. Of course, other times I have memory voices of people I've known, or of lines from TV shows and movies. It's amusing sometimes to pull up when I'm lying in bed and realize the various directions my thoughts have gone, one sparking another.

True, OE. If I have a character with an accent, Russian, say, who leaves out articles when he speaks English ("I went to house to get car"), I "hear" him talk, and that is definitely not my voice.

I think what they mean by "voice" in fiction is a distinctive way of putting things into words. Rex Stout's Archie Goodwin, who narrated the Nero Wolfe mysteries, certainly had a distinctive voice and way with words.

In HS and college, when it was to my waist, to get it to behave I slept with a fruit cocktail can on top of my head (pony tail on top, then wrapped around the can). Had duct tape on the edges. Classy!

This was so normal for me to try to get it straight there is a photo of me in my swimsuit with baby brother by the pool, taken by our aunt. I guess church the next day because I rarely dated.

I should blow up the photo for the gallery downstairs to confuse our sons and grands someday. Maybe photo shop a bone vs the can like Pebbles Flintstone.

Others were ironing their hair straight and my mother said no. She said no to a lot of things and I mostly behaved.

208 I never considered what it would be like to not to see vivid images in your head. I do it all the time with the harleys to diagnose problems. As soon as somebody tells me about a problem they're having my brain immediately runs the movie. If its a transmission problem I see the entire transmission in my head in real time in full operation and "see" the problem. If it's electrical I just about go into Tron mode and surf the wiring. Weird maybe, but if it takes me more than a few minutes to diagnose something its a bad day for berserker. The other dude at this one shop is different. Somebody tells him a problem and he just writes it down. Nothing going on in his head, just words on paper. "Guy said he's having a problem with his clutch, it probably needs a clutch, so I'm going to order one". Really? You sure its not one of the dozen different things that will do that? No vision, no mental image, just words on a paper. A problem to be solved with no blueprint, and he's wrong 90% of the time because of it. I never considered not being able to do that. I would be screwed.

248 Then are they talking first person narrative only? Omniscient narrator as well? Because each character should have a "voice," not just the author.
Posted by: OrangeEnt at January 09, 2026

***
I'm not sure exactly what they do mean, and I'm not sure they do either. Certainly in first person the narrator's "voice" is the first thing you notice.

Yes, ideally the other characters should have distinctive ways of speaking, maybe favorite phrases or curses or other tags. It depends on how long your story is, I guess. Something like Steinbeck's East of Eden has lots of room to explore various voices, the characters' ways of looking at the world. A short story like Hemingway's "The Killers" doesn't have that room, and you have to suggest their differences in a short space.

One of the most amazing thing about reading vintage science fiction is how optimistic most of the dystopias were. A good test or flag in early dating stages is to see how your partner-to-be treats waiters and clerks and staffers. If he or she acts like a little dictator, that's a warning. If he/she is well-mannered and appreciative of what they are doing for him/her, that's a good sign.

The mausoleum of Chavez is the Cuartel de la Montaña, which was originally built as the Military academy in the 1900's, then became a headquarters building, and in the 80's was converted into a museum.
Chavez used it as a headquarters during the 1990 coup, and it was later used both as headquarters for the "Bolivarian Militia" and as Chavez' tomb and museum.

The Bolivarian Militia was the "fifth branch" of the Venezuelan military, a sort of national guard or like Noriega's "Dignity Batallions"

To be fair, in Larry Niven's Known Space cycle, the later stages with hyperlight travel to various colony and alien planets take place several *hundred* years after the devastation of the Man-Kzin Wars, not twenty years later. Posted by: rickb223 at January 09, 2026 11:29 PM (KC3Wn)
........................................
Came back for a minute before reading before bed.

I clearly heard in my head, "Uh, oh" when my bf/future husband and I really met and talked for hours at a party. I guess it was my voice in my head...but a pretty weird thought...and the only time I thought this meeting anyone.

I was outside getting some fresh air at a large kegger, and he walked out the back door as I turned to see who it was.

I told him I had a bit of the spins, and that fresh air was the cure when he walked over to me. I'm not sure why he was out there, too.

I knew him but thought this the moment I saw him. Not in fear, but that life was fixin' to change. It did. Rather strange, eh?

Good night and have a wonderful weekend!

Never really thought about what my inner voice sounds like. It's just thoughts.

All these years, I'd just assumed they were painfully aware of my thoughts, but perhaps we have to speak them aloud for the local spirits to hear.

Still assume that the Father and the Son know everything I think. For which I constantly apologize and hope all that forgiveness stuff is for real.

362 IRGC Forces Turn on Supreme Leader as Reports of Mass Surrenders Erupt Amid Protester Revenge

Iran is facing its most serious internal crisis in decades as reports and videos circulating online claim elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have begun surrendering or refusing orders, amid nationwide protests targeting the Supreme Leader’s authority. Demonstrators, emboldened by signs of division within the security forces, have poured into the streets demanding accountability and retribution for years of repression, while clashes and defections reportedly spread across multiple cities. Although Tehran denies any breakdown in command, the growing volume of evidence and eyewitness accounts suggests a dangerous fracture at the heart of the regime, raising fears that Iran may be approaching a decisive and unpredictable turning point.

Time out for play! So I picked up a dead flower stalk & started poking it through the pickets, teasing him with it. Oh, my-- those razor-sharp claws-- better a flower stalk than my tender flesh, to get slashed by him!

It was a good afternoon & we had some fun.

401 There are some ewetubes (can't find them) that show a modified lawnmower taking on heavy weeds. The ewetube is a lot safer now, they could have pulled it.

Simply, a portion of the top front of the lawnmower was cut away allowing it to 'breathe'. Very effective.

I am FAR from having this figured out, but it sure seems as though we love institutions more than individuals. It may have zero to do with how we fund daycare and public education, but I still don't get why insurers won't cover the far-cheaper home health aides but instead force you to dump your ailing loved ones in a crummy "home." Where I worked, it was like this:

Why not a (somewhat) reduced rate for EACH person?

People with 6 children should've been paying "Employee + 7" assuming they were married...

Why do the singles or childless need to subsidize the heavily-populated families? Don't they get a big enough break from other sources?

Talking to Canadian friends, car guys, who have been there, the vintage cars are mostly junk. They have been bondo'ed up and painted over countless times, and the engines and running gear have been replaced with parts from old Ladas or Russian tractors. They basically keep them going for the tourist trade.

But there is no denying the skill of those shops that do keep them going as reasonable facsimiles of what they used to be. When the Commies finally fall, a savvy investor should buy a big shop in Havana, stock with quality tools and equipment, and hire those guys to do custom restorations on cars shipped in from North America, using quality parts and materials from the North american market.

Some days when I got home, or if I was home for the day the guitar was always in my hands. Even now, if I'm posting anything here at a rate of maybe a few times per hour, there's a guitar in my hands and I don't risk reaching over it to get to the keyboard. Posted by: JQ at January 10, 2026 01:37 AM (rdVOm)

No. Kids are cheap to insure. Adults are expensive. And I have no idea what breaks you think big families get.

468 Liberals and democrats can't seem to understand that rioting, out of control crime, and a population of welfare freeloaders sometimes drive away businesses and productive citizens. Then the tax base suffers. Who do the police think is going to pay their salaries and fund their pensions if those hotels and businesses decide not to rebuild?

469 Re aphantasia: several people in Locke's day described ideas as "mental images". Then Saussure (or someone like that) wrote "obviously there is no such thing as mental images." I don't have much power of mental images either, so when I read that I thought, "good point!" Then I learned that most people *do* have them. Huh.

Weirdly I don't think in words either. I think I think more in images . . . or I feels more like quasi-spatial relationships.

I dunno.

---------

Extra tax exemptions. School meals. SNAP/EBT if income level permits.

471 It's ok, tcn. I have nothing against large families.

473 You have a different gun for church? I stick with my old tried, true and dependable G19, but...

Sunday go to meetin’ gun, knife, watch (family heirloom pocket watch, razor in my sock, flashlight, IFAK, oakwood cane. Sitting behind door on the led of the pew at the back of the chapel.
