Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report — 1/7/26Good morning kids. The removal of Maduro from Venezuela certainly has our enemies and rivals around the globe siting up and taking notice. I would hope that both the President and his national security and foreign policy team including Hegseth and Rubio would have gamed out the aftermath of who would step into the breach to fill the void once we had taken down Maduro. While it's great that the Venezuelan people are cheering his removal, there is still this to contend with Plain-clothes gunmen deployed by Venezuela’s leaders are walking the streets and stopping vehicles as they crack down on dissent and pro-American sentiment in the wake of the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces. The paramilitary members, known as Colectivos, were out in full force on Tuesday as the pro-Maduro regime seeks to maintain control of the country following the surprise U.S. strikes over the weekend, The Guardian reported. Men armed with rifles set up checkpoints in the capital city of Caracas, where they stopped drivers to search their vehicles, phones, and personal belongings, looking for any evidence of support for the United States capturing Maduro, according to The Telegraph. Police, meanwhile, were instructed to “immediately begin the national search and capture of everyone involved in the promotion or support for the armed attack by the United States.”For better or worse, it will be up to the interim leader of Venezuela to disarm these militias assuming that he or she has the power and support of the nation's armed forces that until last weekend were under the control of Maduro and quite likely are still loyal to him. So, we now own this mess. A classified U.S. intelligence assessment concluded that top figures within Nicolás Maduro’s regime would be best positioned to maintain short-term stability in Venezuela in the immediate aftermath of the dictator’s removal, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analysis, which was briefed to President Donald Trump and shared with a small circle of senior administration officials, reportedly shaped Trump’s decision to back Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, rather than opposition leader María Corina Machado as an interim leader, WSJ reported. “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader if she doesn’t have the support within, or the respect within the country,” Trump said during a Saturday press conference after U.S. forces captured Maduro to face federal narco-terrorism charges in New York. “She’s a very nice woman, but she doesn’t have the respect.” (RELATED: Venezuelan Oil Could Make America ‘Master Of The Hemisphere’ If Trump’s Domination Continues)So, if all we did here was a little bit of Titanic deck chair rearrangement on the Lido Deck, then have we really accomplished anything? If we're concerned about maintaining the support of the military and ruling elites then I fear the question is rhetorical. Rodriguez has made some very nice pronouncements of looking forward to working with President Trump and forging a new relationship, for whatever that's worth. Meanwhile, halfway across the globe this is happening to one of Maduro's biggest backers and boosters, Iran. While the usual thugs in the IRGC and others are cracking down on the protesters and there have been reports of the Mullahs getting set to take it on the lam to Russia, here's a little bit of encouraging news: The Iranian Police in Ilam have now joined the revolution. People are seen celebrating as police officers have put down their weapons and are cheering on the protestors. While the combined Israeli and USAF strike that took out the Iranian nuclear weapons sites as well as the collapsing Iranian currency and a catastrophic water crisis among the dissatisfaction with the regime that has been brewing for years might at long last bring it down. Of course considering the power of Iran's IRGC and that since 1979 it has become among the most repressive security states on the planet, to expect them to just give up power, especially to any non-Islamic forces of moderation, modernity and more western/secular oriented parties is wish-casting in the extreme. I hope and pray that the Persian and the Venezuelan people can somehow wrest control of their respective governments and prevent a collapsing of their societies back into tyranny and despotism. I certainly also hope we have a plan to help them that does not include the kind of intervention and adventurism that were the hallmarks of the disastrous globalist fever dream of Democracy Projects and nation-building. Closer to home, President Trump is looking ahead to the midterms, and with the sudden passing of California GOP congressman Doug LaMalfa at age 65, the GOP's House majority got that much slimmer, putting the MAGA legislative agenda in jeopardy. But that said, This is kind of disappointing. The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funds from being used for abortion. Trump told GOP House members during the retreat at the Trump-Kennedy Center that they should work to take the issue of health care away from Democrats. “We don’t have that as one of our issues. It’s the only thing they have. They’re lousy at it. They came up with Obamacare. We tried to fight it. We almost had it won, but we didn’t get three votes,” he said.Well, since when is infanticide "healthcare?" Yeah, I get it, healthcare and this "affordability" madness is an albatross being hung around the GOP's neck by the Dems and their propagandist cheerleaders. And I do agree about Obamacare, but certainly the Hyde Amendment and abortion in general must be be non-starters, or am I missing something? Have a great day. And lastly, a quick shout-out and a huge thank you for your continued support in hitting our tip jar. It truly is appreciated more than you can know.

I can imagine it's a bit of a jolt to the second string in Caracas to have the juggernaut superpower hegemon who just stole your president, and who you're terrified is about to invade your entire country and do Regime Change to it, say to you "So you're in charge now, then? Cool. Bye."
It reinforces the idea of this operation being a very fancy, very visible law enforcement action against one particular person. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 07, 2026 07:29 AM (06Hmj) 12

I'm sure that the options in Venezuela are complicated. But the CIA has a track record, and it's not a good one, so it's little comfort that its assessment is the basis of policy (if that's true). We could probably throw darts at a board and have as good a chance at a positive outcome as we will following CIA assessments.

If the answer is "we don't really care if you loot your people and ruthlessly oppress them, so long as you keep the Chinese and Cubans at arm's length and steer clear of our oil wells," I suppose I can live with that.
But even in that scenario, the long term outlook for the Chavista regime is bad. Without foreign money or the ability to run Colombian blow, they can't really hold up for very long - they've already stripped all the wealth out of Venezuela itself. There's no use in being the ruling junta if you have to wallow in shit and eat stray dogs like the immiserated peasants. So, my sneaking suspicion is this. We - the US taxpayers and our oil companies - will end up subsidizing the regime to maintain the status quo, which I don't think I *can* live with. If that's where we end up, I can understand the realpolitik argument for it. I'm a very pragmatic person. But that pragmatism stops at bankrolling Communist regimes. That's a bridge too far. One of the reasons it hasn't moved faster is because hundreds of the people who were not following the law have been fired or resigned and those positions take time to refill. I'm well aware of the DOJs black box nature and have been saying for months that a grand jury has been called in the southern district of Florida to hear the conspiracy case against Trump this month. But usually elicits replies like nothing is happening. Patience is not a virtue of the internet. Posted by: JackStraw at January 07, 2026 09:09 AM (viF8m) 329

No, J.J. We don't own this mess. This was a mess way before we took any action there. That's the kind of Colin Powell BS that got us stuck in Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc. Screw that...if the people of Venezuela want to remove the chains of thug dictatorship, fine, we can help them with arms, etc., but no overt American presence. Let them figure it out for themselves, with the warning "we make great friends, but the worst possible enemies...don't make us come back there again."

Trump has been in office for less than a year and has faced unprecedented resistance to even getting his team in place not to mention constant subversion from a corrupt judiciary and I challenge you to find another administration that has done anything close to what has been already been accomplished. The entire world power structure not just the US is fundamentally different today than it was on January 7, 2025. It's breathtaking how much has changed and continues to change on an almost daily basis and the pace is accelerating. The DOJ just announced they are sending more prosecutors to MN and that is just the start. CA, OH, IL and NY are in the crosshairs as well. The things that have been started aren't going away. I argue that it's become so pervasive in our time and place that it's become an insurmountable political problem, and it can't be obviated within our existing structures. One way or another this government is going to fold. Either through overthrow, or collapsing under the weight of that corruption, or some combination thereof. My guess is all the bluster will lead to better treatment of Greenland by Denmark, less Chinese and Russian investment in strip-mining Greenland of strategic materials, and more US sensors near Thule. Maybe even a quick reaction force of fighters at the airbase, but unlikely to be a ski patrol.

403 IMHO, everything the Democrats have done the past 9 years is aimed not at attracting more voters, but keeping their base on-board and fired-up to donate and to turn-out to vote en masse when the whistle blows. They rely on fraud to overcome any vote shortfalls. Sure, they work to attract more suburban women and gullible LIVs with more and more freebies. I don't know how many more of those they gain year-by-over. I doubt it is millions per year nationwide.

Paul Krugman had a short post yesterday:
" … I’m not going to talk today about how we got here and strategies for getting out. All I want to do right now is to say that we should be clear about what is happening. American fascism is on the march, and anyone who balks at saying that clearly, who makes excuses and pretends that Trump and the people he brought in aren’t monsters, is deeply unpatriotic. If we are to have a chance at saving democracy, our first duty must be clarity. No sanewashing, no bothsidesing. Only facing the horrible truth can set us free." The US has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker with links to Venezuela. The sanctioned tanker, originally the Marinera, now known as the Bella 1, is now in US custody
Runaway Venezuela-trading tanker Bella 1 painted a Russian flag on its hull, changed its name, and reflagged to Russia mid-voyage last week to avoid capture by the U.S. Coast Guard in the Atlantic Ocean The vessel is owned by Louis Marine Shipholding Enterprises in Turkey, and its crew consists mainly of individuals from Russia, India, and Ukraine. Some of the news accounts claim the ship was previously Marinera, changed to Bella 1. Others claim was previously Bella 1, now Marinera. Posted by: SMOD at January 07, 2026 09:34 AM (RHGPo) 442

So, we now own this mess. Sorry, no. We don't. The Venezuelans own this mess. They wanted Chavez and Maduro as their leaders enough to allow them to seize and consolidate power, and a substantial number of them were willing to cheer on El Jefe when he poked the bear to the North who also happened to be the world's one remaining superpower. They brought this upon themselves by being a Pee Wee League football team trying to take on the '72 Miami Dolphins. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at January 07, 2026 09:42 AM (y9nCu) 449

"So, if all we did here was a little bit of Titanic deck chair rearrangement on the Lido Deck, then have we really accomplished anything? If we're concerned about maintaining the support of the military and ruling elites then I fear the question is rhetorical. Rodriguez has made some very nice pronouncements of looking forward to working with President Trump and forging a new relationship, for whatever that's worth."
I don't see the problem. Vulgar display of power, remove Maduro, encourage the remaining regime to liberalize. It's long and slow but so is occupation and regime change. No Americans died, few Venezuelans died. I liken this to Cambodia. Khmer Rouge remnants ran the country (and still do to this day) and slowly liberalized over the years without the need to nuke and pave the country. They're not a beacon of democracy but they're also no longer a Stalinist hell hole. Posted by: Leninism at January 07, 2026 09:52 AM (C7PXe) 454
Forcing health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions is a central feature of Obamacare, and one that drives insurance costs through the roof as those companies pass on to taxpayers the otherwise foreseeable and preventable losses from taking on sick insureds. That particular requirement is also what has allowed a family member of mine to receive continuing expensive treatments for cancer despite changes in jobs and carriers over more than a decade.
I am left in a personal moral pickle. I generally object to the high costs of this terrible policy in the abstract based on numerous conservative reasons from fiscal prudence to freedom of contract, yet I directly benefit from this very policy in a very real way. I don't like being flamed on them interwebs, but I am open to constructive advice or critique of my thinking? Posted by: MarkW at January 07, 2026 10:06 AM (VhqzG) 455

You could continue coverage before even with a new company when you changed jobs but there was a time limit. Maybe 3 months? The idea was if you had been covered, you could stay covered. The problem was it was expensive if you needed to maintain coverage beyond that 3 month window and people did with the Cobra plans. This allowed you to obtain coverage with a new company even when you were sick. Posted by: ... at January 07, 2026 10:11 AM (Q4G+n) 457
