Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - January 6, 2026 [Doof]

doof-epiphany1.jpg

Today is the Feast of the Epiphany.

Epiphany is a Christian feast celebrating the revelation of Jesus Christ to the world. It is connected to the Magi’s visit from the East. Christians use the day to celebrate how Jesus came not just for Israel but for all nations.

OK. Who Were the Magi That Visited Christ?

The Three Wise Men, also known as the Magi or the Three Kings, are figures mentioned in the Bible in the Gospel of Matthew. They are said to have visited the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Bible does not specify the number of Wise Men; the idea of three Wise Men likely comes from the fact that three gifts are mentioned.

Any mention of the Wise Men reminds me of this gem from Gary Larson

Theology lesson over. On to secular content!

Five Years Ago Today

doof-jan6-1.jpg

Offical White House Website J6 Page

Thousands of Americans paid the price for political failures they did not create.

Since January 6, 2021, Nancy Pelosi spent over 3 years and nearly $20 million in taxpayer funds on her partisan Select Committee, producing a scripted TV spectacle to fabricate an “insurrection” narrative and pin all blame on President Trump.

Video and audio recordings, including unaired HBO footage from her own daughter, show Nancy Pelosi repeatedly acknowledging responsibility for the catastrophic security failures - admitting “We have totally failed” and “I take full responsibility” for not having the National Guard pre-deployed, despite intelligence warnings and President Trump’s offers of troops that were ignored under her leadership as Speaker.

The Democrats masterfully reversed reality after January 6, branding peaceful patriotic protesters as “insurrectionists” and framing the event as a violent coup attempt orchestrated by Trump - despite no evidence of armed rebellion or intent to overthrow the government. In truth, it was the Democrats who staged the real insurrection by certifying a fraud-ridden election, ignoring widespread irregularities, and weaponizing federal agencies to hunt down dissenters, all while Pelosi’s own security lapses invited the chaos they later exploited to seize and consolidate power. This gaslighting narrative allowed them to persecute innocent Americans, silence opposition, and distract from their own role in undermining democracy.

3. Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts
Carefully framed photos make Plymouth Rock seem historically grand, but visitors are often surprised by how small and anticlimactic it is in person. Set below street level and behind a railing, the site feels more symbolic than impressive, with the surrounding urban setting dampening the sense of historic awe.

I got interested in the theories about the Star of Bethlehem this time. If we take "star" to mean "signs in the skies", or certain striking astronomical alignments, there are a few that happened around the Year Zero.

The slickest one, IMHO, happened around 2 BC (the year -1, using current astronomical year numbering and Julian calendar). It was a sequence that went like this.

Sept of 3 BC. Triple conjunction of Jupiter with Regulus in Leo sequence. Jupiter is the king of planets, Regulus is the king star. Then, come June 17, -1, there was a striking conjunction of Jupiter and Venus. There has never been a closer conjunction of the two since, the discs almost touched. They would've appeared in the sky as one very bright object, even with binoculars.

I repotted three peaches that I sprouted from pits this spring, and of course I broke the trunks on two of them trying to get them out of the pots. They have good roots so I am optimistic that I haven't killed them yet.

Posted by: Fen at January 06, 2026 11:02 PM (ciYHQ)

It is actually much more complicated than that. All service members are first obligated for 8 years upon signing their contract... if you are active for 4 and get out, the next 4 years you are in the Individual ready reserve, subject to call back, AND can be (but they don't) prosecuted under the UCMJ.

If you serve 20 years in the Navy as enlisted, you enter the 'Fleet Reserve', and are paid a retainer... which we all call retirement pay... but it does not legally become retired pay until you reach the age of 60.

If you are in the Fleet Reserve, you 'can' be made subject to the UCMJ, by being recalled... or lose that 'retainer' pay.

So yeah, question is legally complicated.

255 Read the other day of a magical place, Hallstatt in Austria, being overwhelmed with tourons. Only 700 people live there and sometimes have 10k visitors a day.Thankful I visited when we did. They now have time slots like overwhelmed national parks here.

I did not like Vienna, but loved Salzburg, possibly my favorite city in Europe. We were there in 2012 or so and it was not crowded. Took a train and boat to Hallstatt for the day and it was lovely. Interesting grave yard or charnel house...sort of creepy. Church was beautiful. The Alps were right there and we ate on the lake in a nice restaurant. I think in early May before tourists. Loved it!

At the time I felt totally safe shopping alone in Salzburg and wandering around, but this was pre-barbarian invasions. Probably not the same now, thanks to too many tourists and diversity.

If you only have (1) and not (b), glassing the entire USofA while turning the surface of the planet into the Fallout computer game isn't a win, unless you're insane.

And if you're that insane, getting your own country glassed at the same time isn't a loss, as long as you, personally, survive in your bunker full of c-rations. Which would be "winning" a nuclear "exchange." Pooty might be nuts, but he's not that nuts.

I realize he wrote his own Bible, and had some loopy ideas about religion, but otherwise I loved his house and gardens. His bed was between his library and bedroom; and he invented a cool reading table or bookstand...I need one, as I never read just one book at a time.

I impressed my husband by knowing the answers to questions like a nerd on the tour. Sometimes I surprise him! Loved the dining room as well.

Were there in the spring and the flower gardens were gorgeous. Loved the vegetable gardens and learning of all the flowers, vegetables and fruit he brought to the US. A busy man.

We'd take little trips from DC when we could. Horse country in VA is beautiful. The people were sort of snotty when they heard my Southern accent, but that never stops me. It's not the twangy kind but refined and they can bite me.

I mean, don't literally avoid it, but it's the gay section of Paris. No big deal during the day, it isn't like Castro Street in San Frsncisco, no debauchety or anything...but a lot of the hotels do advertise as gay friendly.

316 Horse country in VA is beautiful.

Back in 1995 or so I had to go to DC so I took a road trip into Richmond, down to Charlottesville and William & Mary and then back up the Blue Ridge highway I think it was. Went to the Natural Towers park and relaxed for an afternoon, visited Culpeper.

Don’t remember exactly where it was but a big bookstore in a dilapidated barn or something near a famous battlefield.

Beautiful country and great food. My hotel room in Mount Vernon faced a Krispy Kreme and I could look out the window and just see when the sign lit up. This was back before they went national.

317 Cicero the Marseillaise lyrics are simple and easy to learn. Always sing (well, sotto voce) when I hear the music. Best national anthem.

Also sing the words to the Deutschlandlied - the first stanza of the lyrics, not the third, as the wimps switched to after the Great Unpleasantness in the 40s. Guess it was the "Von der Maas bis an die Memel, von der Etsch bis an den Belt" part that was a little uncomfortable, given, um the recent history and all.

Russkis just kept the melody and 90% of the lyrics, adding some religious references that of course were unimaginable under You Know Who. Extemely Russian melody, ponderous and powerful.

And we both remember that one of the most fascinating / horrifying exhibits was “Esther”, this Indian mummy that had been found in the ruins, quite well preserved. She was laid out in a glass case in the focal point of the museum; I remember that her skin looked like black leather, and her face was twisted into a kind of scary snarl. Real nightmare stuff!

FUN FACT

The Soviet (now Russian) national anthem was written under pressure from Stalin during WWII by Sergey Vladimirovich Mikhalkov.

After Stalin, Mikhailov was required to change the lyrics to remove references to Stalin.

Then again after the end of the USSR. Because no USSR.

Them one more time after, when Putin decided to to re-adopt it as the Russian anthem.

Sod houses were commonplace on the prairies of the Canadian West in the early days of settlement. Farmers had ploughs, and a horse and a plough could cut a lot of sod in a day. Lay the sod like bricks for the 4 walls, and roof over with poles and thatch, and you could have a snug home built in a few days. Sod walls fifteen inches thick provide good insualtion against the cold of winter. I had the opportunity to look through a small "soddie" at a park near Calgary, and it was cozy.

My great-great something grandfather, a French Huguenot carpenter, once owned the land in Richmond where the capitol is built. He also invented some type of tables, and did well until he didn't & died in deb.Mid-1700's, I think. There's a Presbyterian church in NC that he built. At some point he moved from NC to MS and then Texas.

My family is a mix of some wealthy and mostly farmers. We never saw any of the wealth! One of my great-grandfather's was a handsome lady's man. After birthing 5 kids my great-grandmother found a note from one of his lady friends in his jacket, and threw all of his clothes and stuff into the front yard and left him. Instead of a divorce, she lived a life of a widow. He went on to Louisiana to marry again and a bigamist when he died. Have seen a photo of him.

My mother has been into genealogy since the early 80's and spends her time correcting family trees and getting into arguments on Ancestry.

It would be a formidable weapon, able to evade defenses, and all that. But if they launch 'em, we'd know about it, and respond in kind.

What I find interesting is that other countries know the words to our anthem. Canadians sang the words with Americans at a hockey game when the mic went off for the singer.

Have seen youtubes of Brits and others watching this and are amazed that they also recognize the melody and some lyrics...yet say that no other country's anthem comes to mind. It made me proud to see them watching with such interest. It's a powerful song for a powerful country.

I would hazard a guess they added some sort of PTO to the rear axle, with a clutch that engaged when the spare tire was jacked down all the way. Or they simply could have used an electric motor.

There was a similar gadget from the early 1950's. Hydraulic rams forced small conical rollers down under the front of the rear tires, lifting them off the ground. The rollers spun on axes parallel to the front-rear axis of the car, and when the rear wheels turned, the rollers would move the rear of the car sideways. Worked like bevel gears.

396 So, I saw a really unusual old floor model hi-fi at a thrift store today. Had a Garrard chamger in it, and sitting on top was a stack of LP's in some sort of magazine affair. Not sure if it belonged or not. And the tuning dial on it was reallu oddball: a two-axis dial. AM stations along the Y axis, and FM stations along the X axis. A center aluminum disc with hairline pointers reaching both axes. Looked like a graph!

I camped out in the Florida keys way back in the late 70's, before I met my hubs. I went with a female co-worker and a guy that I went to high school with (non-romantic partner), we had a blast down there, I would imagine that it has changed greatly since that time.

Having Jorge Antonio Rodriguez as her actual father does not necessarily rule out her being Jackal's stepdaughter. If old Jorge croaked, and his widow married the Jackal, then Delcy would become his stepdaughter. But clearly, they ran in the same crowd. Unlikely a Marxist activist would not be familiar with old Carlos.

446 I lived on a canal in Cocoa Beach for a while. The one thing about living on a canal is that you can have privacy issues with the back of you house being visible from across the canal.

So after living there for a while I noticed that one house had what appeared to be a Christmas tree with lights on it that sat inside the rear sliding glass door. I could never be sure and it really wasn't any of my business so I really didn't check it out.

One day, there was a dog in her backyard I had never seen before and it managed to dig a tunnel under her side fence and escape. I hopped on my bike and managed to grab the dog in her side yard. I knocked on the door to giver her the dog back and she asked me to come in.

Sure enough, there was a Christmas tree set up , I think it was summer because it was hot.. I mentioned it to her and she said she "Just LOVES Christmas" and asked me if I wanted any Christmas cookies. She said she celebrates Christmas all year. I glance around and noticed that the whole place was extensively decorated for Christmas. She live there alone and adopted dogs to keep her company.

She brought a big plate of home made Christmas cookies out from the kitchen. NO WAY!

Denmark subsidizes each Greenlander to the tune of about 12-14k each in USD. 56,000 or so Greenlanders. Your math may vary.

There have been US military on Greenland since 1941 (and pre-Pearl Harbor).

A million per seems high.

Also, Danish law prohibits Greenlanders from doing their traditional main job of hunting and killing whales.

I'm not screwing with you.

What's the story?
Posted by: pawn

Which story?

I am far too old to engage in bullshit v. bullshit games. I do like to hear other peoples' stories. A History degree...it changes a man.

459 I learned to never, ever, read the comments at ZeroH. It's like Barnhardt Memes-- always comes around to H8 Trump and H8 Jooooos.

Posted by: JQ at January 07, 2026 02:07 AM (rdVOm)

I never read comments anywhere, just here, and thats only because after 2 decades of this place with the shit ton of funny shit I have read here over the years its all I need. I'm not an internet surfer. JJ's morning report is all I need for news, and ONT for the funnies. I'm good.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 07, 2026 02:17 AM (snZF9)

460 This is the only place I read comments. Here, everybody knows each other, where they are coming from. As random as it appears there is a general intent and purpose. ZH and others is a thousand random voices screaming.

461 Yes, Bers-- this here blog is the only place what has comments *worth* reading. LOL.

463 Miklos,

With all due respect, I was asking to hear the story of CTJ's unvarnished hijinks that you mentioned earlier.

You said you believed this Delcy woman was his step daughter.

464 ZH and others is a thousand random voices screaming.

Posted by: Braenyard

Apparently at Bluesky, each commenter has a thousand voices screaming in their own individual heads.

Kudos the the burden on-taker who reports from DU.

That must be wearing as well as amusing.

Why... why... they'll be *held in contempt!* Maybe even *censured* (can a state be censured?)

And, and, they'll receive Sternly Worded Letters!

Yeah, that's the ticket...

Posted by: pawn

Oh that

I did say step-daughter, but maybe daughter, I can't go as far as that *cough Obarky's real father cough*.

Carlos (for short) was a Revolutionary Comrade and associate of Delcy's father. Who died.

Carlos married the widow for a time, circumstances unclear, then skedaddled to Hungary. The wife/step-daughter did not accompany him. Carlos was quite the ladies man.
