Sunday Overnight Open Thread 01/04/2026: Lazy Winter Edition [Doof]

IMG_0180b.jpg

Good evening, Horde! It's Sunday night in the depths of winter 2026, the perfect time to kick back and ignore the looming Monday. Welcome to the Overnight Thread - your no-judgment zone for snark, strong drinks, and whatever random thoughts are rattling around in your skull after a weekend of questionable decisions.

Retro Corner

Ah, the innocence. Back when a smiling housewife could sell you cigarettes and floor wax in the same breath.

-----

Speaking of housewives, how about a little retro snack to support eating healthier in 2026?

IMG_0182b.jpg

21 oz crabmeat
2 packages lime flavor gelatin dessert
2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
2 tbsp cider vinegar
2 tsp onion juice
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cups sour cream
1 cup finely chopped, drained unpeeled cucumber
Few drops green food coloring
3 oz cream cheese
2 tbsp cream
Chicory, watercress or parsley

Flake crab or krab, saving sections for garnish.

Dissolve lime gelatin and salt in boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Add vinegar, onion juice, Worcestershire sauce. Chill slightly until thickened.

Fold in sour cream. Blend well. Fold in cucumber and crab (or krab).

Add enough green coloring to give a medium green tone to the mixture.

For mold, use lightly oiled 6-cup capacity funnel, available in hardware stores. Plug the hole at base with foil, pour in a little gelatin and chill to keep remaining gelatin from leaking out. Stand filled funnel upright in a large measuring cup. Chill until firm.

Unmold, mash cream cheese, stirring in cream. Beat until soft and fluffy. Frost top of the mountain to look like snow. Garnish around the mold with greens and remaining crab chunks

You can’t serve this without a cocktail: 1950s Cocktails to Shake Up Your Night (we have stocked all the ingredients at the bar):

IMG_0183b.jpg

The Martini (The Ultimate Sophisticate)
Dry, gin-based martinis epitomized 1950s cool—James Bond ordered his "shaken, not stirred" in 1953's Casino Royale. Often extra-dry with just a whisper of vermouth.

Classic 1950s Recipe:
• 2½ oz gin
• ½ oz dry vermouth
• Olive or lemon twist garnish
Stir with ice, strain into a chilled coupe

-----

IMG_0184b.jpg

Grasshopper (Creamy Mint Dream)
Invented earlier but peaked in the '50s as a vibrant after-dinner treat.

Recipe:
• 1 oz green crème de menthe
• 1 oz white crème de cacao
• 1 oz heavy cream
Shake with ice, strain into coupe

-----

IMG_0185b.jpg

Stinger (Post-Dinner Digestif)
A sophisticated brandy-cognac combo popular among the elite.

Recipe:
• 1½ oz cognac
• ¾ oz white crème de menthe
Shake or stir, strain

-----

IMG_0187b.jpg

Pink Squirrel
Born in the '40s but a '50s staple in supper clubs—pink, nutty, and indulgent.

Recipe:
• 1 oz crème de noyaux (almond liqueur)
• 1 oz white crème de cacao
• 1 oz heavy cream
Shake, strain

Classic 1950s Zombie Recipe (1956 Waikiki Variation)
This is a prominent 1950s version served at Donn's Hawaii locations—sweeter and more pineapple-forward than the original.

Ingredients:
• ¾ oz fresh lime juice
• ½ oz white grapefruit juice (fresh)
• 1½ oz unsweetened pineapple juice
• ¾ oz maraschino liqueur (e.g., Luxardo)
• ¼ oz velvet falernum
• ¼ tsp grenadine
• 1¼ oz gold Puerto Rican rum (e.g., Bacardi 8 or similar)
• 1 oz dark Jamaican rum (e.g., Appleton Estate or Coruba)
• 1 oz 151-proof Demerara rum (e.g., Lemon Hart or Hamilton)
• ⅛ tsp (about 6-8 drops) Pernod or absinthe
• 2 dashes Angostura bitters
• ¾ cup (6 oz) crushed ice
Instructions:
1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
2. Flash-blend at high speed for no more than 5 seconds (just to incorporate—over-blending dilutes it).
3. Pour unstrained into a tall Zombie glass, chimney glass, or tiki mug.
4. Top with more crushed ice to mound above the rim.
5. Garnish extravagantly: mint sprig, pineapple fronds, orchid if available, or a spent lime shell with 151 rum floated and lit for drama

Tonight’s ONT is brought to you by truth in advertising

IMG_0181b.jpg

Tonight's ONT was concocted by Doof Enterprises, LLC. There may or may not have been a mix up in the assignments for tonight. We do our best to keep functions assigned to the properly trained personnel, but sometimes, employees take matters into their own hands and play "whatever you can do, I can do better". Apologies offered to those who are dissatisfied.

Your feedback may or may not be very important to Doof Enterprises. Follow Mr. Doof on X @doof2112 or do the email thing – doof2112 at proton dot me.

43 THE OFFICE of
KAMALA D. HARRIS

When we talk about Venezuela, we are talking about a country. And that country exists within a hemisphere. It is significant to understand the significance of the passage of time as it relates to where we were yesterday and where we are today.

Democracy is about the process. It's about the doing of the thing, not just the result of the thing. We must move forward toward a future where we have processed the processing of how those things should be done.

Because the work is the work we do every day. And that work is significant.

Got tested yesterday - it's not COVID or the flu (hubby does have bronchitis, though). Thank goodness the doctor at urgent care was willing to prescribe antibiotics for both of us.

Tomorrow I get my staples removed, which is a good thing. My skin is starting to not be happy with all of that metal! Had my port filled with a new medication which will hopefully wipe out these little tumors. I have been off of my other medication for a month, and my cancer markers shot up over the threshold amount. This is a VICIOUS disease!

Posted by: nurse ratched

You know, this could be the opening sentence of a fantastic Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest story.

It was a dark and stormy night. I had a glass of Buffalo Trace in one hand and a flashlight in the other. The wind howled through the pines like a chorus of angry ghosts, rattling the loose shutters of the old cabin I’d sworn never to return to. The bourbon burned a slow, steady fire down my throat as I nudged the warped front door open with my boot, the beam slicing through years of dust and shadow to reveal the same faded photograph on the mantel—me, grinning like an idiot, arm around the woman who’d vanished without a word twenty winters ago. Tonight the place smelled different, not just of mildew and neglect, but of something sharper, almost alive, and as the floorboards groaned beneath me I heard it: a soft, deliberate creak from the room upstairs, the kind that only comes when someone is waiting.

186 Evening, people of the gray boxes!

Just finished watching the noir experiment Lady in the Lake from 1946-47, with Robert Montgomery and Audrey Totter. The gimmick: The camera takes over Philip Marlowe's viewpoint; we see everything from his perspective except when he looks in a mirror. Clever, I guess. But it's slow and static, we keep being *told* things instead of seeing them, and Montgomery sounds like he's doing a Bogart impression -- like a man trying to sound tough rather than being tough. Not recommended despite a good cast otherwise.

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at January 04, 2026 10:41 PM (Cw/ar)

Since this a revision of previous surgery, I'm sort of used to being useless. They mean it when they say don't use it at all for six weeks, at least. Depending on what all they do. But you will start PT after two weeks, and the PT person will do the moving.

Be prepared to help with everything. Underpants and deodorant are the first tricks. It is remarkable how little you consider what two hands means until you only have one to use.

Expect very little. The time does pass. Do not skimp in PT, even if it hurts, and it will. Don't be a wimp.

Maduro himself is a low IQ blowhard who only was put into that position because he was no threat to those who really held power (sound familiar?). The man himself is of no value; but the information in his head as to who he was working with and what they were up to is incredibly valuable to us. I think we want that info far more than we care about what actually happens to him.

“ As a result of the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the early hours of January 3, 2026, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat while carrying out missions on behalf of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of counterpart agencies in the South American country," reads a Facebook post by MINIT.

“Faithful to their responsibilities for security and defense, our compatriots fulfilled their duty with dignity and heroism and fell, after fierce resistance, in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of the bombing of the facilities,” they added.

289 Doof...I briefly looked at the music and came up with nothing.

Regarding the drinks. I came from a Southern family whose father had a beer with seafood. Decades later I started them on the path of Gin and Tonics, that I still love in the summer.

My grandmother's rare drink set you spinning eggnog that they let me have before legal age. The only time she had booze.

The other grandmother had no idea she and her elderly sister were drinking Bloody Mary's at a wedding but did love that tomato juice! They were giddy by all reports.

I meet my Long Island future in-laws who believed in daily cocktail hour on the dot of 5pm. Martinis.Or, later, straight vodka on the rocks.

I was first asked what I wanted to drink when meeting them as a nursing student. Beer or wine were all I could think of. She started me drinking Manhattan's. Then Gimlets.

After marriage I'd sometimes go home after a Rusty Nail on top of a cocktail and wine with dinner at their house. My new husband and I noticed I'd have a happy cry with weeping on the way home.Sentimental weirdness. Which was pretty odd as I rarely cry at all. He stopped those Rusty Nails quickly.

I've seen clips of protestors burning govt buildings, chasing down IRGC guards, masses blocking major roads. They seem to be coalescing around Reza Pahlavi. When I watched his address to the Iranians I wondered if this will be historic.

336 Speaking of underwear...our first son solved laundry as a freshman in college by buying 30pr of new underwear every month.

We once went to his university for a recital for his jazz teacher. His tux was buried, and I am not kidding, under a foot of clothes in his closet. I hauled it out and ironed it for the nitwit.

He and his roommate lived like cavemen in that apt. I saw a plate with petrified pizza in his roommate's bedroom. Dishes piled in the sink (I washed them). Roommate kept pizza, in the box, in the oven for days and ate it (he also only ate some sort of beans from cans). No doubt our son ate out like he was a trust fund baby (he wasn't).

Considering all he did in his college years to drive us loco, I am amazed we still speak to him much less love him.

He's the one who dated probably 30 girls or more (that I know of). Finally married a girl a decade younger. I have to say he was far worse than his father in finding the right one.We hope she keeps him.

Message from Venezuela to the world and to the United States

Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to peace and peaceful coexistence. Our country aspires to live without external threats, in an environment of respect and international cooperation. We believe that global peace is built by first guaranteeing peace within each nation.

We consider it a priority to move toward a balanced and respectful international relationship between the United States and Venezuela, and between Venezuela and the countries of the region, based on sovereign equality and non-interference. These principles guide our diplomacy with the rest of the world.

We extend an invitation to the US government to work together on a cooperation agenda aimed at shared development, within the framework of international law, and to strengthen lasting community coexistence.

351 My analysis from foreign press

Delcy Rodriguez was apparently agreed on to be the president interim as she was a) already in the chain of command which Maria Corina Machado was not, b) had actual status in the country and government, c) was the one who oversaw the recovery of Maduro's oil industry from near collapse, d) was instrumental in turning the economy a bit more market driven and less a straight dictatorship. and E) apparently was willing to spit Trump and Rubio in the eye.

She is also the daughter of an economist who started out as a marxist revolutionary, and she blames the US on her father's death at the hands of one of the pre-Chavez governments, and claimed she accepted to position under Maduro because of this.
But Corina Machado would have to fight for enough legitimacy to hold elections, and Rodriguez won't have that extra step.

I am hoping and praying the nephrologist clears him for kidney-friendly psych meds and doesn't take a "let's wait and see" approach like she has in the past. If she does, we are fully prepared to jump to the VA's Urology Department, because Pooky NEEDS his meds, he is hanging on by a thread.

Right now I am thrilled if she's wearing boots with snow on the ground. I think her mother has given up with the new baby and lets her dress herself. Sometimes she looks normal, today she did not. What, that Rubio's demand before accepting SoS was the destruction of the Castros? Or his greatest dream is probably to give the victory speech from Fidel's favorite soapbox in Havana's Plaza de la Revolución, preferrably after they rip that ghastly modern art portrait of Che off the facade of the building behind him and leave it a pile of twisted rubble?

It needs to happen. It is going to be hard to keep all the elements from tearing each other apart while it is going on. The Cubans are really beaten down after 50 years, and a lot of them only see what they don't have. Their sense of humor is vile, that goes along with it.
No one wants to own up to the fact that it not only was their fault, but also there was nothing that could be done to change it because of the powers beyond their control were making it happen the way it turned out.

467 Cuba was the driving force for revolution in the Americas in the 50's and 60's. They were in every country outside of Peru (which had Chinese funded revolutionaries) funded by USSR and trained in Cuba.
Most of the screaming about the Plan Condor that was the basic anticommunist playbook for Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil was in response to the Cubans' revolutions, and these countries were under an actual undeclared revolution.
The Communists and their fellow travelers today claim oppression and extra legal execution and jailing, but the numbers the revolutionary cadres killed, kidnapped and bombed were higher.
Castro was a murderer and a slaver of his own people, and I am frustrated that he died in his sleep.

478 457 Oxygen was actually toxic to plants if going back far enough.

I don’t know if it’s related, but Chitin, the stuff insect bodies are made with, is strong and light, though such characteristics that it is physically impossible for for them to get too big, so no monster sized predatory dragonflies on people or whatever. Pity! Could make outdoor gatherings more interesting
Posted by: Common Tater at January 05, 2026 12:21 AM (umyLr)

Insect/arthropod size is also dependant on oxygen levels, because of their passive respiratory systems. When the atmosphere had a larger percentage of oxygen, we did have dragonflies with 2.5 foot wingspan and centipedes over eight feet long.

IIRC, two foot dragonflies existed in the Permian period. Doubt they would have preyed upon human-sized critters, though. Maybe smaller bugs and lizards.

When I was a tarbender many yrs ago if a patron ordered an extra dry martini I'd pour a dash of dry vermouth into the glass, swish it around and then throw it out. Proceed with ice, gin or vodka and garnish.

This was in a N IL version of a WI supper club, bout 40 yrs ago. We even had pickled mushrooms as a garnish and made our own anchovy-stuffed olives.

481 I want to see a free Cuba with Venezuela.

Because I lived in post-Civil War times, we had bomb drills, children. Along with fire drills. I knew about bombs but as a 2nd grade kid was not too concerned in MS about Cuba. And the Bay of Pigs, which I thought was literal. My parents did not alarm us that we might actually die, which was good.

Parents would receive, at the beginning of the school year, a note for "one canned good" for the class pantry. My mother sent a large can of fruit cocktail that was supposed to sustain me for the rest of my life (she said that's what she had handy with no thought of protein). I hope it was a shared pantry with Spam or peanut butter..."Here, I will trade you a piece of pineapple."

Anyway, there would be monthly notices of the drills & no matter the temp I'd wear leotards under my skirts or dresses. Because the boy's idea of the bomb drills were to look under our dresses.

Otherwise clueless to how close we apparently came to being goners. I never saw the "duck and cover" cartoons. We squatted under our desks to survive.
I guess if wounded, "rub some dirt on it." Yes, it's a little radioactive but all will be well.

I love Cubans in Florida.

Just saw somebody quoting a NYT article on how Kimberly Guilfoyle is doing as Ambassador to Greece:

... Rapunzel hair, false eyelashes, plumped lips, figure-hugging sheath dresses and high heels. 'In terms of public relations, she has done an excellent job,” [the Greek commenter said]. But the 'submissiveness' of so many Greeks lining up to meet her, he said, 'makes us look like a Third World country.' Mr. Georgiadis, the health minister, shrugged off the buzz. 'When she was first named, the people were, "What’s that?"' he said. But the early energy deals, he said, have proved that she has substance. 'If she delivers,' he said, 'who cares if she has a see-through dress?'..."
