The Morning Rant

punk-monkey.jpg

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
-- John Adams

He had an excellent point, and the collapse of recruiting for the United States military was indicative of a loss of moral clarity on the part of our government. So why should good patriotic Americans enlist to serve our country when its government is behaving in ways that are obviously antithetical to the concept of American Exceptionalism, which is, at its core, moral and religious?

And yet in a span of one year, America has seen the change in its government and has decided that serving the country is once again an honorable thing!

Historic ICE hiring surge adds 12,000 as agency kicks off 2026 with major busts

Recruiting Boost: How US Army's Big Gains in 2025 Translate to New Year

It's amazing that the media report "massive" and constant demonstrations against ICE, yet the rest of America outside of NYC, Portland, and a few other blue city shitholes is happy to work for a government department that pays well and is doing real, quantifiable work to get our country back on track.

And the armed forces are doing just as well, with all branches reporting solid recruiting that is better than planned. The immediate and public pivot away from struggle sessions and race-baiting and transsexual worship, in conjunction with the head of the Department of War being an unabashed patriot and a man who doesn't wear three masks while looking like a weeble, has yielded instant rewards.

Add in two stunning military successes over the skies of Iran and on the ground in Venezuela, and the unequivocal message is that the American military has returned to form, and has shed the lunacy of the Biden/Obama junta, and is well on its way to purging the officer class of Obama-era apparatchiks and post-modern America haters.

We are a martial country. The 2nd Amendment wasn't written as a lark to push Americans to take up arms in defense of their freedoms; it was a response to and a defense of a well developed political and moral philosophy. That we are returning to the status quo ante Obama/Biden is a testament to the resiliency of the American body politic, and our cultural memory of exactly how we emerged from the malaise of a sclerotic Europe, and created the greatest country in the history of the world!

I guess you can just sum it all up as "It's the morality, stupid."

22 The enemy has focused their forces in a handful of high visibility cities, and a compliant media puts it focus there rather than on the 98% of the country that couldn't care less about what those (paid) protestors think or do.

I've come to realize that these paid and organized protests (just as in the color revolutions) are nothing but excuses for certain leftists in power to try to do what they always wanted to do anyways, but were blocked from doing.

But if you have a government that just laughs and ignores them (as with the infantile "No Kangzzz!!! farces) they have no meaning and no effect on anything. They simply become punchlines to a series of bad jokes.

My local “news” reported that hundreds of people protested the Maduro arrest at our city hall. If there were even 50 people there I would be surprised. It was obvious from the photos posted that there were maybe 25 people (all 60+ years old to boot) there. Being charitable, I’ll double it to say maybe the photo didn’t capture everyone. But there is 0% it was 100 let alone “hundreds”.

The media lies about everything all the time. With no exceptions.

No, I think he got it right. The system recognizes man's lust for power and its corrupting influence. But much of workings of the government is based upon a willingness to not cross certain lines. Under FJB, the democrats chose to cross over all sorts of lines - their pitiful legal attacks on Trump, their absolute corruption with foreign bribery, their efforts to suspend free speech and association. Their attacks on private property rights.

These are things that no one would have done before except perhaps in a dire emergency (yes Wilson was no saint around WWI). A moral, ethical people would not have done what they did. That has led to additional coarseness in our political life. And what do we know about the progressive left? There is no God, so they make up their morality as they see fit.

Reagan was closer, since a generation is a better estimate. No one election will collapse America.

Until we get to that point, we have a little breathing room.

Adams masterwork, "Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America" is seldom read today but it was while Revolution was fermenting in France and the US under the Articles was sliding into chaos (Shay's Rebellion and all of that). As US minister to UK, Adams had little to do as the Brits refused to talk to the US. So he wrote.

One important fact is that Adams, pretty much alone among the Founders, recognized that competing political parties would exist in the new Republic using reasoning later echoed in Madison's famous Federalist 10 which only focused on factions (aka interest groups).

But as far as what Adams wrote in a letter in 1798 (quote above), was something he more or less declared when he wrote most of the Massachusetts State Constitution a decade earlier.

Something Kind of Funny Happened in Caracas

According to the Financial Times, "A state of emergency decree, dated January 3... directed authorities to 'immediately undertake the search for and arrest . . . of any person involved in the promotion of or support for the armed attack by the US against the territory of the republic.'"

Was there a coup under way? The military rising up against the regime? Other members of the regime rising up against Rodríguez for playing nice with the United States? Even better, was the United States coming in for the round two Donald Trump keeps promising if the remaining regime members don't behave?

No. It turns out that it was none of that at all. It was apparently the Presidential Guard spotting unidentified flying objects overhead and unleashing hell upon them, probably thinking it was, indeed, the United States. But it was actually...wait for it... their own drones. These dudes were, by all accounts, shooting up their own equipment and wreaking havoc on the streets. You can't make this stuff up.

118 I've been reading some posters on X explaining why the situation there is so difficult and tricky to control right now. According to Francisco Poleo, the Rodriguez network controls the Executive, the Legislative, and what remains of the economic structure. That is who we've chosen to work through.
But there is a man named Diosdado Caballo who controls the henchmen, the paramilitary militias, and most of the street level thugs who can disrupt the entire country easily. He is not under the control of Rodriguez, but a rival. And then there is Vladimir Padrino Lopez, who controls the official military forces, and who tolerates civilian control but does not easily submit to it.
Each of these power centers are in competition with each other, and each can block the others if they are not respected. This is why Machado could not be installed as President; if that was attempted now, all 3 would move against her in unison.

Hard times tend to concentrate the mind. Both in US and Europe, quite a few young men are actually taking up faith again and a desire to rebuild their homelands as it appears that in churches, the growth in single males attending is beginning to offset the number of single females leaving churches.

But the love is love churches are not seeing this increase as they dwindle down to non-existence after proclaiming co-existence. It seems that only a full blooded defense of religious tenets actually sells in the marketplace over time so those faiths that are embracing past traditions and faith requirements will be the ones reaping the harvest.

We're doing that because we do not want to have to put 100,000 American Troops on the streets of Caracas.

Or DON'T we?

The Faculty Merit Act requires state universities to publish every higher-education standardized test score (SAT, ACT, CRT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, etc.) of every faculty member, as well as the standardized test score of every applicant for the faculty member’s position—of every applicant selected for a first interview and every applicant selected for a final interview. It requires everyone in the hiring process, both applicants and administrators, to affirm under penalty of perjury that they have provided every standardized test score.

Aye, we dreamed of a proper pair of drawers—cotton, mind you, not some old sack what the potatoes came in—but nay, we went bare-arsed through the snow, freezin' our nadgers off, and grateful for it! If we were lucky, we'd find a hedge to squat behind and pretend we were civilized, but most days it was just us, the elements, and a prayer that nothin' important fell off in the frost! Underwear? Pah! We'd 'ave sold our own mothers for a scrap o' cloth that didn't itch like a thousand fleas! Luxury, I tells thee! Luxury!!

In Peter's second epistle he exhorts the early Church to grow in their faith by building a chain, starting with virtue/morality, then adding knowledge through learning, exercising self-restraint and patience while striving toward higher order traits of godliness, brotherly love and charity.

And the standardized tests will promptly be even more compromised. You cannot even compare standardized tests anymore between eras as the composition and scoring have changed substantially to make them easier.

What the NAS is trying to do like so many other policy mavens, is use a blunt stick as a universal panacea. And FWIW, I did very well on standardized tests which is more like puzzle solving to me rather than something I stressed about. I never studied for them, took prep courses, etc. in the 80's and I was hungover when I took the LSAT.

Test results are no substitute nor guarantee of diligence, work ethic, honesty, empathy, or other markers of someone who is a superior faculty member.

220 And the standardized tests will promptly be even more compromised. You cannot even compare standardized tests anymore between eras as the composition and scoring have changed substantially to make them easier.

And yet, standardized test scores DO show unequivocally that schools are racially and sexually discriminating by hiring less than the best in order to meet their utopia. It is illegal and it needs to stop. This is one way to do it. If the tests have changed (they have) then make everyone take the newest tests.

Test results are no substitute nor guarantee of diligence, work ethic, honesty, empathy, or other markers of someone who is a superior faculty member.

Of course, but they are helpful to highlight when the system is deliberately discriminating against some individuals, making it harder to do.

Having served on faculty hiring committees including being a chair of such as well as going through the process myself, I find little value in what the NAS is proposing.

Simply put, its faith in standardized testing is unwarranted unless they plan on fixing ETS as well. It is trying to substitute some mechanical algorithm for what is essentially a very human process and a very human business.

I've seen it before, often the candidates that look good on paper are actually abysmal when you see them in classroom and research presentations.

If universities and colleges really want to fix the issue, you have required exit exams, much like comprehensive exams for graduate students for undergraduates.

ACS had something like that for gen chem for example. Make the exit exams publicly announced, just like Law Schools and Med Schools have to announce their passage rates for those objective exit exams.

The whole purpose is to fix education for students, not for faculty. Focus uni rewards on educating students rather than social cred and nonsense research.

283 One of the reasons I was resistant to Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land was his portrait of religion.

The dominant religion in his book was a cross between a brothel and a casino.

If you want to bang chicks and gamble, you don't need to tithe for that permission.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Heinlein's biography explains part of that. He was reacting to a pretty severe Millerite upbringing and to him the orgasmic release from sex because his vision of God. Rather repulsive note from him to his future second wife Ginny explained that he could never be faithful sexually to only one woman and she would have to put up with that. His first wife agreed with him about free love crap and as she deteriorated mentally due to alcoholism I recall, their relationship ended romantically before it ended legally. But she was his early muse and he never got away from combining sex with his faith.

284 This has always been so. Our dioceses has always been more conservative but the pews have getting fuller over the last year, or so. More liberal ones always lag. There are a lot of quasi-religious idiots using the whole "You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" thing as a biblical mandate for open borders, endless taxpayer-funded welfare, and not enforcing immigration law.

I think there's an underlying problem that no one really thinks about.

The market for tickets went from really only available to locals to being available to everyone with online ticket sales.

1,000 tickets available? In a town of 1,000,000 where there are 3,000 people who want to go, that's one level of demand. In a country of 300,000,000 where 1,000,000 want to go, that's another.

I'm sure Ticketmaster's fee policies make it worse, but the underlying issue is that the market for tickets at limited venue locations for high-demand events is just larger than it was before.

294 Having served on faculty hiring committees including being a chair of such as well as going through the process myself, I find little value in what the NAS is proposing.

Simply put, its faith in standardized testing is unwarranted unless they plan on fixing ETS as well. It is trying to substitute some mechanical algorithm for what is essentially a very human process and a very human business.

Nobody is suggesting that test scores be the only metric, nor that the proposed solution will fix the entire problem, but it will make discrimination more difficult by shining a spotlight on glaring disparities in performance. I've looked at many CVs in my day, and while it is certainly true that scores aren't a panacea, they are helpful. More importantly, they make it harder for the discriminators to deny what they're doing.

There's a reason so many schools dropped the requirement for test scores a few years ago, and have now reinstated them. The reason is that they work.

All true, but a significant portion of the demand is artificial and created by TM's policies that allow professionals and bots to buy up tix and resell them on a platform that (IIRC) TM also owns.
