Can you think of any noteworthy examples? I can! ![]() Florida (wo)man. Genius Award winner. WTF?? Woman Found Dead in a Freezer at Miami Dollar Tree Store Miami police are investigating after a woman was found dead in a freezer at a Dollar Tree location on Sunday morning. Authorities say the body was discovered around 8 a.m. by an employee at the store located at 968 SW Eighth Street. The woman was later identified as 32-year-old Massiell Garay Sanchez. According to investigators, surveillance footage shows she entered the store alone the night before her body was found. She did not make any purchases and was not employed by the store.News video clip at the link. It was the day before Christmas Eve, and recent homemakers Rob and Dianne Parsons were surprised with a knock on the door. Opening it, Rob looked upon a rather strange sight. A man stood there with a wheeled garbage bin containing his possessions, and a frozen chicken under his left arm. Rob didn’t know it at the time, but he was in the middle of an interaction that wouldn’t just change his life forever, but his community too. ***Cool story. Check out the whole thing. Every year, thousands of people end up in emergency rooms across the United States for a rather uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing reason — we keep getting things stuck in our rectum. Whether it’s out of curiosity, an accident, or for sexual experimentation, the number of these incidents is surprising. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tracks emergency room visits in a database, which includes anonymous reports of items that patients have inserted into their rectums. While the names are confidential, the items certainly aren’t. A recent review of the 2024 data has highlighted some of the most unexpected and bizarre cases. *** Some cases stood out for their sheer scale or strangeness. A doctor recounted removing an entire desktop-sized Yankee Candle — the kind scented like pumpkin spice — from a man’s rectum. In another case, an Iranian man needed surgery after a deodorant canister he had inserted traveled deep into his digestive tract. And a Florida man was found to have a thermos lodged inside him after being scanned during a drug arrest. Confusingly, some people weren’t even sure if they still had something stuck in their rectum or couldn’t remember inserting anything at all.Extensive list of items at the link. Check it out, if you dare. Really. It's fascinating what people are putting up their keisters. ----- Not related, yet somehow related

If asked why these objects are in their rectum and sometimes making way into the area where surgery is needed, they ALL say they don't recall. All say they "accidently sat on it." Oh, sure! I should have kept a record in the ED and said, "Aha! Democrats!"
There are some weird people out there, y'all. And I have not seen them in an ED for 15yrs. Heaven knows what goes on now. I came home one night and told my visiting parents that a guy thought he was a baboon. Making oooh oooh sounds and scratching his armpits and walking like an ape. A RN and I were walking by his room (I was in street clothes with a lab coat). He screeched, "White monkey!!" at me and got an erection and tried to follow me. The medics who restrained him said he appeared to want to mate. All of the medics and some of the docs were vets with big muscles and I trusted them daily with my life. They looked out for us. It was just another night in the ED for me but my father and husband loved this story. We were all quite barking mad, to be honest. Huge ED in a med center. Great docs and nurses, however, if you were in need of help. I loved them all. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at December 30, 2025 10:18 PM (WONhk) 53

They took a couple in and gave them "jobs" at the nursing home that basically consisted of saying hi to everyone. They didn't have any room in their small house so they gave them beds at the nursing home. One guy, Eddie, became part of the family. One factor in the Empire's fall was a lot of hard currency (gold and silver) left the Empire when it was spent on luxury goods from the Far East. The mining of gold and silver within the Empire couldn't keep up with the demand.
Secondary impact was due to the governments income generated by tariffs drying up as the imports decreased, due to the lack of gold and silver to pay for them. Having not yet discovered the fine art of issuing third party derivative bonds based on peacock feather futures, the financial sector declined. My ex's family owned a small nursing home while she was growing up. This was at the time they were closing mental institutions and putting a lot of people on the street because their families disowned them.
They took a couple in and gave them "jobs" at the nursing home that basically consisted of saying hi to everyone. They didn't have any room in their small house so they gave them beds at the nursing home. One guy, Eddie, became part of the family. He was with them for decades and attended every family event including our wedding where he was possibly the happiest person at the event. Nice man. People aren't disposable. Since I would, for once, be on topic tonight...I will repeat the scan the trauma surgeon and ED docs had me review one night. For my notes for his admission, they said. Right.
BS. They wanted to see how I would react, altho they knew me very well. I tried faithfully to present myself as I am, a refined Southern lady and professional (who had a husband they knew and two HS sons). Now and then they saw the real me for brief moments of lost composure. They'd crack a joke at inopportune times. I go into their office, thinking, this is new for all of them to come find me as a group... It was a large and blinking flashlight in the guy. Set on blinking or it set itself for the CT scan. Maybe he thought it was off. It only took a second for me to bend over laughing loudly like a lunatic and they were all pleased with themselves. Was I shocked, oh, hell no. Nor did I shock them by laughing like a loon, but they were all in on wanting to see what I'd say or do. I said,"hazard lights." And, yes, the man told the doc he accidently sat on it. It was never a woman who did this, by the way. Maybe now with trans, but not then. I hate hazard lights in fog on FL hwys is why I named it this. Only climate thing in Roman times that comes to mind was that the 10th (?) Legion, in Anglia, was able to cultivate vitis vinifera grapes to make their own wine. Something that would be difficult in the climate that has long prevailed there. Of course Atlantic currents probably explain 90% of it - none of that related to %s of trace gases in the troposphere of course.

Empire stage Rome never figured a good method of succession, it was one of their greatest flaws. Inside dynasties going with an heir went badly more often then it went right, and when there was no ring dynasty it was catastrophic. During the crisis of the 3rd Century there were 26 Emperors in just a little over 50 years, and none of them died from “natural causes”.
And at the end of the western empire, the once great Roman legions were just barbarians hired to fight other barbarians by wealthy Romans who no longer cared to do any of the fighting themselves. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 30, 2025 10:45 PM (m7iZ5) 165

During the crisis of the 3rd Century there were 26 Emperors in just a little over 50 years, and none of them died from “natural causes”.
I want to say Claudius II died "naturally" but you may or may not count the Plague of Cyprian. Another job with a poor retirement plan was King Of Judah (or Israel). I was just looking it up. Queen 'Athaliah got coup'ed, then the next king Joash got coup'ed. Athaliah might have deserved it but Joash actually tried to do some good, they found a flood control dam he built. Im a big fan of Fisher Space Pens. They will definitely cost more than that (the low end ones, which are just fine, will run around $12) and then will cost about $8 just to refill. But I always have a pen with me because Im always writing, and these always work. The ink doesnt stop flowing until there is no more ink left, so they last practically forever on one refill. A closer one to look forward to is the cross-quarter point, which occurs around Feb 3. If you use the so-called "solar season" where the equinoxes and solstices defined the *middle* of the season, then the cross-quarter days mark the boundaries. The Feb 3 cross-quarter date is a pretty good marker of when the days start to become noticeably longer and longer relative to the short winter days. Posted by: Bulg at December 30, 2025 11:15 PM (77rzZ) 242
Prior to JFK Presidents used to travel everywhere in open car parades, usually standing up so the crowds could see them better. This was done since the first automobiles were purchased by the White House. Even after president elect FDR was almost smoked in a car in Miami, he did the traditional ride from the Capitol to the White House with Hoover in an open car.
Truman and Eisenhower did all kinds of auto parades in open cars, in Europe and South America. Harry used to go on daily walks around DC with just a single secret service agent. So there was absolutely nothing unusual about JFK doing yet another top down open car motorcade. The route was only finalized about a week before, because they hadn’t settled on a venue yet. Oswald had only been working at the building for maybe a month. Texas School Book depository actually had two different locations, he was randomly assigned to that one by his boss. The "NASA spent millions developing a space pen while the Rooskies used pencils" thing circulates widely, but is just an urban legend. NASA originally used pencils. Mechanical pencils, and there was a scandal in the early 60s when it was discovered they paid over $120 per pencil. That was '60s dollars. A regular wooden pencil would need sharpening, meaning shavings flying around. Graphite is conducting, and a short hazard floating around. After the Apollo fire, it was deemed a fire hazard. Fisher developed the space pen entirely with its own money, spending about $1M on development. NASA didn't spend a dime on that. They then bought them, and with a bulk discount, they paid a little over $2 per pen. The Rooskies also bought a bunch. The Rooskies noted the same problems we had with pencils, and used the new pens. The fact that docs in NYC initially were ignored on how to treat still ticks me off. Putting the patients on vents made them worse. This one NYC doc and others said to treat them as if they had decompression sickness like with the bends,vs a typical pneumonia. Vents made the lungs stiff with covid. No one listened. Some knew early on and yet the government/Fauci made it worse. We are exposed to all sorts of toddler/now 2nd grade stuff weekly. In fact our toddler boy first gave us covid in early 2021...we did fine. He did the best at 3yrs old and unfazed. His father gets the sickest, and sort of always has vs his brother in childhood. He gets sick more due to frequent air travel, sometimes international. They quarantine him and do ok. Hope your son feels better soon. Witnesses saw a man in the window on the 6th floor with a rifle. They thought he was an agent or security or whatever, and therefore did not alert a policeman just yards away. There was unprecedented security in Dallas that day, they had called everyone on duty. They didn’t sweep buildings and they didn’t round up Oswald.
Two guys were directly below Oswald on the 5th floor, they naturally clearly heard the shots, dust fell on them from the ceiling, heard the brass hitting the floor as cartridges were ejected. Last night you got me obsessed with this Feb beginning on a Sunday cycle thing. Thanks. :-) Anyway, it's not rare at all, and happens on average (sort of) 1 in 7 years, as sort of expected. However, the spacing is not regular. It goes in 6, 5, 6, 11 year cycle every 28 years, with the Gregorian skipping some century leap years shifting it around a bit. So, next cycle, 2026, 2032, 2037, 2043, then repeating in 2054. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2025 12:20 AM (w6EFb) 363

On a related note, I recall being a bit disappointed that we didn't have a double-leap year in 2000, meaning a Feb 30th, since 2000 is neatly divisible by 400 and I thought the next two decimal places in the number of days in a year was also '25' as in 365.2525 days in a year. At some point don't we have to account for those figures beyond 365.25? Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at December 31, 2025 12:33 AM (QGaXH) 369

The Gregorian 400 yr cycle estimates the mean tropical year indeed at 365.2425, or 365 + 97/400 days. The actual mean tropical year as of epoch J2000 is 365.2421896698 ephemeris days. In mean solar days (earth's slower rotation) on J2000 that was 365.24217 mean solar days. So the Gregorian still slightly overestimates the length of the tropical year, and that difference means a drift of about 1 day in 3200 years. That's damn good, but still drifts. The problem is, at that level of precision, over ten millennia time scales, the wig-woggle in the astronomical cycles itself becomes significant, not to mention the secular slowing of the earth's rotation. The Gregorian 400 yr cycle estimates the mean tropical year indeed at 365.2425, or 365 + 97/400 days. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2025 12:52 AM (w6EFb) So I don't know where I got 365.2525 from... Instead it seems we'll need to skip a leap year or two or three every 400 years ? Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at December 31, 2025 01:00 AM (QGaXH) 392
'Something going around'-- always.
Peppermints are good for soothing, too. Cinnamon & clove as well. Or, go for the warm whisky & honey tea! For stuffy nose? Go for the spicy-hottest food you can stand. Add wasabi or chinese hot mustard to plain rice. Posted by: JQ at December 31, 2025 01:01 AM (rdVOm) 393
On this leg of the various Milankovich cycles, the tropical year is actually getting shorter, and then the earth is slowing down, long term. That will make the drift in the Gregorian a little bit worse over the next couple thousand years. This will make the equinox be about 1 day behind around the year 3200, rather than expected 3200 + 1600 = year 4800 or so. A ad-hoc thing that would sort of compensate for that would be to skip the leap year in 3200, then continute as normal to the year 4000, and then switch to a 500 yr rather than 400 year cycle. This would average out over the long term about as best as could be done giving the uncertainties in the astronomical cycles and earth's rotation. It would initially underestimate the year on the front end, then overestimate on the back end, and average out over maybe 10 - 20K years. The equinox would drift maybe +/- days over that period. >> Instead it seems we'll need to skip a leap year or two or three every 400 years ?
That's the Gregorian rule. Skip the leap year every century that's not a multiple of 4. The leap year in 2000 was the first such century leap year since 1600. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 31, 2025 01:03 AM (w6EFb) 395

Posted by: JQ --- I did a thorough enough search to satisfy me that contrindications are about zero. ChristyBlinky has mentioned that it can ifluence hearts that have fibrulation problems. I've had atrial fibrulation, an ablation, a shock to get it in rhythm and other mechanical devices. I've done (not at one time) one and 3/4 tubes of paste, that's probably (recollection) 6 times (it's measured on the syringe) and no problems but the symptoms went away.
