Using her own husband as a model, Spencer depicted the man stumbling down the street and attempting to hold on to the items in his overflowing basket, attracting gazes from at least one onlooker and suffering a public humiliation. Spencer depicted in humorous terms a real social anxiety of the time: that of setting up a household and running it efficiently.

Painted from her home, with her husband as her business manager. Moved to NYC in her middle years.

There's an old Andy Capp cartoon where Andy calls on his mate Chalkie to go down to the pub. This is apparently grocery stores' attempts at experimental design, efforts to gather data on how sitting different items next to each other or in different parts of the store affect purchasing behavior.

It's radically inefficient and a waste of pretty much everyone's time because you can design the experiments much more efficiently.

Ours did that. What had been a quick run now takes 30 minutes. I talked to the store manager, who liked it no more then we customers did. But that's upper management nowadays.
