30 Spencer portrayed the unvarnished reality of male-female relationships in this painting, which chronicles the travails of early married life. Here, the unseen young wife is not in full command of her kitchen, having sent her young husband out to procure the groceries—a task for which he is evidently not qualified. Using her own husband as a model, Spencer depicted the man stumbling down the street and attempting to hold on to the items in his overflowing basket, attracting gazes from at least one onlooker and suffering a public humiliation. Spencer depicted in humorous terms a real social anxiety of the time: that of setting up a household and running it efficiently.

37 The sneer on the face of the man in the background reminds me of a Punch cartoon from (I believe) the 1860s, showing a man in full Victorian regalia holding his young daughter with one hand and carrying her doll in the other.

Because that sort of fatherly affection in public was thought to be unmanly, the title of the cartoon was True Courage.

I see the same dynamic here.

>The famously funny yet enigmatic chorus, Simon said, came from a funny memory of going to a party at the New York apartment of Pierre Boulez, the conductor-composer. Simon and his first wife Peggy arrived, meeting their host at the door, who evidently had no clue who they were. Boulez introduced them to his guests as “Al and Betty.”

There's an old Andy Capp cartoon where Andy calls on his mate Chalkie to go down to the pub. Chalkie says that he won't, because he feels guilty about going off and having fun while his wife is in bed with the flu. "Suit yourself," Andy shrugs, and the last panel is of Chalkie doing dishes and saying, "'E's a smashin' mate. 'E likes me in spite of me virtues."

This is apparently grocery stores' attempts at experimental design, efforts to gather data on how sitting different items next to each other or in different parts of the store affect purchasing behavior.

It's radically inefficient and a waste of pretty much everyone's time because you can design the experiments much more efficiently.

263 Young Husband: First Marketing
Lilly Martin Spencer, American
1854

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 758

"Spencer portrayed the unvarnished reality of male-female relationships in this painting, which chronicles the travails of early married life. Spencer depicted in humorous terms a real social anxiety of the time: that of setting up a household and running it efficiently."

It's a well-done and lighthearted painting. Lily Martin Spencer's 'Young Wife: First Stew' is too. I like the featured painting and the other mentioned a great deal & might hang them as a set.

Thanks.

277 Our local Kroger's decided to completely rearrange every store. The new layout makes zero sense. Every non-frozen or refrigerated product has been moved. Even canned vegetables are scattered about, and not in their own aisle.

They do that periodically to keep you in the store longer. The theory is if you are wandering around - you may buy something on impulse. They are idiots to do that because they don't account for the pissed off customers who are angry at the store for wasting their time, and figure "I'll just shop somewhere else if I have to learn a whole new layout".

NEW: House Oversight Committee Chairman @RepJamesComer announces the committee’s first hearing into the MN Somali fraud scandal will be on January 7th & will feature MN state lawmakers who sounded the alarm on the fraud & were allegedly ignored. MN Gov. Tim Walz & AG Keith Ellison are being invited to testify before the committee in a second hearing on February 10th.

“Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison have either been asleep at the wheel or complicit in a massive fraud involving taxpayer dollars in Minnesota’s social services programs,” Comer writes. “Next week, we will hear from Minnesota state lawmakers who sounded the alarm on this fraud — and whose warnings were ignored by the Walz administration. This misconduct cannot be swept aside, and Congress will not stop until taxpayers get the answers and accountability they deserve.”
