  • Binance's Trust Wallet Chrome extension turned out to be misnamed. (Web3isGoingGreat)

It got hacked - from the inside, a so-called supply chain attack where a developer's system is compromised and used to slip malware into critical applications - and users lost $7 million.

Binance has updated the extension and will reimburse users who lost money due to the attack.

Y'know it might be time to refresh my installation library for all my GOG games, even though in this case it doesn't look like there's about to be a ton of screwage after a company gets bought out. Thanks for this, Pixy.

I grew to dislike its use of odd color pairings of text with background. Some of its blurbs were nigh on unreadable because the pairings were so bad (i.e., so close in appearance to each other).

A lot of fontophilia suffused their product, too.

It is funny how the absence of leaves on the trees leads to high winds having more of a persistent and harsher sound that, in my mind's eye, strongly suggests that it would be unpleasant to be out in that cold.

40 "Windows on Arm has had a good year." (The Verge)

My Surface Pro 8 had a hinge snap a few days before the holiday sales. This made the box useless as a PC. I ended up with a Surface Pro 11 with the Qualcomm X Plus CPU as a replacement. It does everything I need or want, does it very well, has great battery life and all the software I use is natively compiled for ARM.

The new V2 CPUs that are hitting the market in the first half of the 2026 look to be speedy things. Depending on price and performance improvements selling the SP11 is not out of the question.

I am hoping that small form factor desktop PCs with these CPUs hit the market too. The performance numbers I have seen so far indicate the V2 CPUs can easily function in a desktop box; how such a box is implemented will drive if Intel or AMD will be considered if these come to market.

As usual, YMWV based on your specific needs, but based on my experience Qualcomm PCs are viable today, and with the native software and Prism emulation rapidly improving in a few years all the compatibility concerns will/should mostly be over.

The movie "Nobody's Fool" features a wide range of "snow sounds", including the squeaks made when one walks on snow when temperatures are really, really cold.

Once you become aware of them in the film, you notice that its sonic continuity was compromised by putting scenes where it was severely cold up against scenes where it was raining, and yet all were supposed to be the same day.

64 "I grew up before cell phones, and that my son knows how to read an analog clock."

I have vague memories of as a child, having a red plastic clock face, with movable white hands, and 12 round bluish removable inserts that were numbered with the 12 hours of the clock face.

So you had to be able to place the numbers in the correct locations on the clock face, and then the hands could be positioned at any time that was desired by the parent, and you had to be able to correctly determine what time the clock face was displaying.

Re the analog clock: I don't recall when I learned how to read one. It was before I went to school, I think. I remember telling my mother that the hour after lunch ought to be "thirteen o'clock" instead of "one." Wisely, she did not confuse me by introducing military time.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 30, 2025 06:01 AM (wzUl9)

72
I certainly knew how to read before I started school. One day in the first month of first grade, my teacher asked me to stay behind after school. "Oops," I thought in terror, "I'm in trouble." But she merely sat me down and said, "Wolfus, you know how to read, don't you?" I nodded. Hey, I'd thought *everybody* knew and had wondered why my classmates stumbled over simple words during reading time. "Dick & Jane" books were hardly Shakespeare or Thomas Hardy.

So I got a field promotion to second grade. Had to go take some tests over the next summer to confirm that I was ready for third.

97 So looking up DDR5 memory at NewEgg: 2 x 32 gig sticks (DDR5 5200 / PC5 41600) $1,299.00 CDN

I bought a 64GB AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 w/ 4TB of Samsung 990 Pro SDD (and 1TB of some other performance SSD) for less than that just a few months ago (and the memory is 8000 not 5200)

And six months before that for $400 less for an otherwise similarly configured box using the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS.

I was looking at a modest upgrade to the Stryx latest with 128GB but I think I'll wait a year or two and just see what the processors are like then for the mini PC.

Not ready to do ARM but may look at it when I know that all of the docker components I'm using are ARM friendly.

The French Passport is slightly more valuable than a US passport in that your mobility options increase.

Things like visa-free travel in the Schengen zone, the ability live, work, own property without restrictions, start businesses or invest (think FATCA restrictions) in the EU.

I think the French passport also allows visa-free or visa on arrival in Japan, Australia and most of South America.

The French Passport is better than the US passport and French travelers are treated better than US travelers due to the Hate America First stigma around the globe.

Or pay in arrears - like I have to do for business expense accounts.

I just OCR / upload my receipts and qualified purchases get compensated.

I would have zero problem if some AI company with really damned good OCR abilities would get the government contract to take a phone image of a receipt and process it. AI could also do increasingly great job of real time auditing and validation.

a 50 billion dollar contract would result in a trillion in savings.
