The Morning Rant: The Fall Of Iran?
Protests escalated across Iran on Monday as demonstrators confronted security forces in Tehran and Mashhad, with authorities deploying tear gas amid strikes and street clashes, according to reports. An Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, reported that a large crowd of demonstrators marched along Jomhouri (Republic) Street before moving into nearby areas, including Naser Khosrow Street and Istanbul Square in Tehran.
Except...there is a wild card, and his name is President Donald Trump. Will the President take a public stand in support of this nascent popular uprising? Will he back it up with concrete actions? Will he mobilize his new friends in the Arab world to confront Iran? With Trump's and America's support, unlike in years past, it is possible that the Iranian -- or perhaps we should call them Persian -- people will have the opportunity to do what they could not do since the heady few months after the fall of the Shah. And Iran is weaker than it has been in a very long time, with Israel destroying Iranian proxies on its borders, and carefully creating security bulwarks against Iran. But they still have to deal with the comprehensive internal security apparatus that the Mullahs have assiduously created over the last 45 years. It is brutal, cruel, and all-encompassing, and unless the collapse occurs very rapidly (see: Romania), there is the possibility of horrendous death and destruction as the Mullahs lash out against their subjects. Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson will be despondent if the Mullahs fall, but that might be the best part of the whole thing!

What makes Iran different this time is that they’ve destroyed their own currency through throwing money away on all of their military adventures. So their ability to keep paying their own military is now in question, as their internal inflation rate is now 40% and unemployment approaches 50%.

As I've said on several occasions here, probably close to 50% of the world's population don't want the responsibility of being free. And that includes this country.
It takes a certain depth of character in order to be self regulating and be positively engaged in a high-trust society.
That is why totalitarianism has been the rule since expulsion from The Garden.
Even the Jews demanded of God and Samuel to give them a king despite the clear warnings of what that would look like.
Apparently slavery wasn't a problem so that they could be "just like all of the other nations".
So I don't want to hear about Judeo-Christian ethics in the foundation of this country, it was the printing press, guns and Calvinism that created the American Exception or as Ronaldus Magnus opined "the shining city on the hill".

As a California voter I am now of the belief that my vote has been gerrymandered into irrelevancy on both the state and national level. We have strong family ties to California, even though both our sons fled, and I lived my entire adult life after college here. I want to stay and fight but it seems futile. We might however establish a 'bug-out' domicile in a nearby free-state if things continue to deteriorate.

There seems to be a strain in conservative circles that anything having to do with anything in the middle east -- anything at all -- is really nothing but the USA kowtowing to Israel. I think that's what irks some people. I don't see it that way. Let's say Trump goes out and states "we love the great, luxurious people of Iran, and America has your backs! Stand up for truth, justice, and the Persian Way."

The choice at that point would be to call the State/CIA/Ayatollah bluff and go for large-scale military intervention to support the protests (unacceptable to Trump's base, and possibly disastrous) or back down and leave the protesters to get chopped up (what will actually happen).
Trump would be wise to say little or nothing here.

I've worked in tech for over 30 years so I know better than most people what Israel does for us. (One example: Intel exists today because their Haifa design team saved their ass with the original Core processor in 2006 after the US screwed the pooch in all possible ways with the Pentium 4).

Back when the Embassy was taken, I was on a planning team looking at what it would take to go there.
I came away with the knowledge that Iran is an EFFING BIG place and getting there would not be easy. Getting there in any numbers to sustain combat operations would take at least six months of buildup...probably closer to a year. And in too many places you'd be restricted to roads as crossing the desert is not an option. There are hundreds of square miles of desert that has a two-foot crust of hardpan covering rivers of flowing sand and mud beneath. Deadly for armor.

I came away with the knowledge that Iran is an EFFING BIG place and getting there would not be easy. Getting there in any numbers to sustain combat operations would take at least six months of buildup...probably closer to a year. And in too many places you'd be restricted to roads as crossing the desert is not an option. There are hundreds of square miles of desert that has a two-foot crust of hardpan covering rivers of flowing sand and mud beneath. Deadly for armor.
