Just finished watching an odd little 1946 film noir on Movies!, Deadline at Dawn. It's based on a Cornell Woolrich story -- not sure if it was a novel or a short work -- and with script by Clifford Odets. It's a delight to see a young Susan Hayward as she was beginning her climb to stardom, plus Paul Lukas and a raft of other character actors who etch a small portrait of a summer night in a New York with strangely empty streets. A standout bit features a janitor who rushes his cat to a vet, only to find she has died of eating a chicken bone. He closes the carrier, stands up slowly, says in a dull voice, "She was my only companion," and shuffles away into the night. Affecting stuff.

- The older islands have landslides and otherwise erode and rebound.
Used to live on the SE coast of the Big Island that had a bit of subsidence. Water would lap over the shoreline road in high tide and strong sea-breezes. Now it is covered with up to a hundreds of get in fresh lava.

I know I'm being pessimistic, but I started this year feeling so hopeful. Trump was going to be President, Elon was going to clean government house, and my kids and grandkids would experience the America in which i grew up. Yet despite being the minority, the Democrats have stymied just about everything. And I really don't foresee much progress in 2026. I just hope I won't be forced to wear a hijab and burka before I'm gone.

IIRC, the Hawaii islands are created as the continental plate slides over a "hot spot" that builds a new island, and the island eventually moves away to the west, where it erodes away. This, of course, is not exactly a speedy process.

My 93 yo MIL is in a pickle, melanoma removed from scalp and not healing well. Long story but an otherwise vibrant woman is facing skin grafts and had to be placed in skilled nursing because of complications.....
Somehow YOU came into our discussions and I told her life was short and to eat the cheese cake and buy the yarn. We laughed til we cried. God bless you, sweetheart!

It can take a few weeks. It hard to tell since it depends on when the baby passed. I had one miscarriage before I had my first son at 35 and another when I was 49. Both times I tested positive and then had no heartbeat at the first sonogram around 8-12 weeks... miscarriage happened a few weeks later in both cases.

As it stands right now, this is absolutely true. However, the economic plan that Trump set in motion starting on Liberation Day, continuing with the OBBB, and set up with DOGE is all going to come together starting next year/next week. It will become obvious to the weak sisters in the GOP that Trump really is the strong horse. We began to see that with the Q3 GDP and inflation numbers. Don isn't on the ticket, but everyone knows that he is. That's why he's doing a midterm convention to remind everyone what's at stake. By the time June comes around, everyone will know that it's Morning In America once again.
I wasn't worried about the 2024 elections for a nanosecond, and I'm not worried about the midterms either. Trump's got this well in hand.

A forthcoming space telescope mission I'm getting all hepped up about is the Nancy Grace Roman observatory, which will join James Webb at L2.
That thing will be able to detect exoplanets like nothing before, down to near Moon mass objects. It will be able to detect exomoons orbiting exoplanets, and even be able to optically image large exoplanets (Jupiter mass and such not too far away).
This thing is ahead of schedule and will likely launch late next year.

The 'positive' you want to run with I've responded to sarcastically. And I feel like I'm insulting everyone here by explaining it, and some of them don't deserve it.
The SC isn't actually reliable. At all. They still look for excuses to back up the D judges where they feel they can get away with it.
More importantly, they're a different branch of government, that House Republicans in particular have no influence on them. The lazy shits in the senate can try to get some mileage on SC picks, but House pubbies need to point elsewhere for some example of doing anything at all.
I don't know, maybe they could pass the full repeal of obamacare they had no problem voting for like 50 times before Trump was elected. For example.

Yes, I can say that from my general experience, most of them are dumber than dog shit. I was down at the Franklin County Courthouse (Columbus, Ohio) with my then teen-aged son, over a legal scrape he was in. There was a Somali there that looked like an absolute moron, no exaggeration.

If you want a reliable predictor of how the Robert's Court will rule... just figure out which ruling protects or expands the power of the Courts.
Even the BIG YUGE Conservative win when they ruled that Court's did not have to just accept the Reasons for the Administration passing Regulations, which is supposed to slow down the regulatory state... just put that decision into the Hands of a Judge, instead of Government Experts.
