Gun Thread: Final December and Final 2025 Edition!

122825 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! It's a gol-danged double final! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be the Final December Edition and the Final 2025 Edition?! Christmas was bueno (read: quiet-o) here. How about all y'all? Did you get shooting stuff? Did you give shooting stuff? Did you both give and get shooting stuff?

Your ol' pal Weasel hopped into WeaselOne yesterday and made a quick trip to WeaselAcres to check on things, and everything was just peachy. A few extra sticks to pick up along the road, but that was it. I didn't stay long enough to do any shooting, and will remedy that next trip. How about you? Anyone get a new firearm and take it to the range?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

In accordance with longstanding Gun Thread tradition, the Final December Edition and Final 2025 Edition always focuses on revolver fundamentals.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

Please note the new and improved protonmail account gunthread at protonmail dot com. An informal Gun Thread archive can be found HERE. Future expansion plans are in the works for the site Weasel Gun Thread. If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer. If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. If you would like to remain completely anonymous, just say so. Lurkers are always welcome!

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?

9 Weasel, did you get snow where you live? We had around 4 inches up here in the PRNYC.

Also, I am reading a series of books set during the Napoleonic Wars where one of the characters carries a 7 barrel volley gun.
All barrels fire with a single press of the trigger.
It is amazing what we humans can come up with.

Sergeant Harper of the "Sharpe" series, right? IIRC, the story was the gun was invented for the Navy, but they found out the fierce recoil had a tendency to knock the sailor firing it out of the rigging.

43 Range report

Took the PPQ and did some faster drillls focusing on changing marks on the target. Side to side, a little faster than one shot per second (which is fast for me). Had to manage recoil amd sight alignment while changing focus to a different mark.

Did well.

I wonder if it would be ok to shoot a moving target. Start at 25 yards and hit the return button on the target and shoot as it approaches me.

Bingo!!!

Never read these books before. They are a good read.
Interesting hearing them describe how much better the rifles were over the musket with the only drawback being it took longer to load the rifle as the bullet had to be wrapped in greased leather so it would catch the rifling of the barrel.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at December 28, 2025 07:20 PM (PI/SC)

47 Although the BATF was in hot pursuit of Santa Claus, he managed to lose them and brought me a nice S&W Model 64. It's an LEO trade-in, with minimal wear, pristine rifling and no Hillary hole. Locks up tight, has a great trigger, and I shoot more accurately with this handgun than I do with any other double-action revolver I own.

And I also finally found a screw driver bit small enough to remove the absurdly tiny set screw in the rear sight of my Uberti 1873 lever action rifles.

I recall one memorable line from the series. Sharpe has retured from an exhausting assignment, and accepted another one. Harper, in a rare use of Shape's first name, says in his Irish brogue of rolled R's, 'Richard, Richard, your heart is making promises that your body canna keep'.

Unspecified. A quick search returns:

Bench: A bench shall be a rigidly constructed table being of a height to permit a shooter of more or less than average height to sit comfortably there at by merely increasing or decreasing the height of the stool on which he/she sits. It shall preferably be constructed to permit firing by either a right or left handed shooter.

Walther announced that they would end production for an indetermined length of time to change their production processes at the factory. This includes the threaded SD variants of the PPK and PPK/S, so get one if you've always wanted to indulge cosplaying as 007.

The other annoying thing is that those tiny screws are torqued so tight that it's hard to get them out even when you do find the right size. And, supposedly, the screws are made of softer steel than you find on rifles made by, for example, American manufacturers, so it's easy to mess them up. I bought three extra screws online, just in case.

165 Somehow, "This is a Smith and Wesson .41 Magnum, the second-most powerful handgun made." just doesn't roll off the tongue.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at December 28, 2025 07:58 PM

Ironically, the .41 Magnum was intended to provide the ideal cartridge for law enforcement, and was pushed upon
both Smith & Wesson and Remington by Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, and other notable handgunners.

The police load that was originally suggested was a 210-220 grain lead semi wadcutter, pushed at around
950 to 1000 fps. The first load to appear, however, came quite close to duplicating the performance of the 44 Magnum, causing police administrators to give the 41 little more than a cursory glance. Eventually, (too late) Remington did produce a reduced loading, more in line with the original intent of the cartridge.

Those who touted the .357 accused the 41 of generating too much recoil. On the other extreme, fans of the 44 Magnum viewed the 41 as nothing better than “second best". In truth, it should be a 'mama bear' round, "just right".

I would wager that it was the crud in the striker channel as that causes light primer strikes normally. Slows the striker down. Rarely it can be a headspace issue on a very worn firearm.

Guide rod issues manifest differently as in loading issues and extraction/ejection.

Two (that I know) of the PDs that adopted it were San Antonio and San Francisco. the SFPD had that exact problem, particularly with women, who were beginning to come onto the force.

I shoot full .41 Mags out of a 657 Mountain Gun. It's certainly doable, but not something I'd enjoy putting in 100+ rounds in a session. Full-on .41 and .44 Mags really aren't duty rounds for police, IMO.

Of course, even Dirty Harry shot .44 Specials.

204 Had to check out the relay videos.
Actually worked on them in a way distant past life…anyone remember Western Electric?
They were the manufacturing and installation arm of Ma Bell, way back when.
I worked for them, and actually installed and wired these relays. It was called a number 5 crossbar system, and the relay racks were 12’ tall. It was fascinating. The ladders to get to the top and in between that and ground level were rolling ladders on tracks. Starting about 10:00 am, the clicking and chattering of all those relays approached deafening. I LOVED that job!
Anyone know of the wiring method called wire-wrapping? I lived it for years…
On another note, I’m looking at a 10mm to replace my Kimber 45acp. It’s just a boomer, and I want something a little more tame, but with bigger teeth than my 9.
Saw a S&W performance center one that looks extremely nice. But I also saw an Sig that was equally as nice looking.

======
Easier to design rifles around rimless than rimmed.

Rimmed cartridges came from an era of bad brass and mercuric primers that softened the brass even more. The rims sealed the chamber from gas events from head separations etc. New rifle cartridges have been rimless for a long time while there are very few rimmed rifle cartridges still around. Still useful in handgun cartridges for revolvers as the extractor star works far better than any of the hodge podge alterations (moon clips, Charter's system for rimless retention in cylinders, etc.)

I'm not sure you'll find 10mm less of a boomer than .45 ACP. (Full disclosure, 10mm is my 2nd fav cal, behind .41M.) One regrettable anecdote from my wife's hospital stay - she was intubated, a state that would naturally agitate just about any of us, and she was fighting against the restraints they had to use. A nurse came in and effectively yelled at her, "You need to calm down!" My daughter, who had the bedside watch at that time, had to suppress an intrusive desire to thwack that insensitive nurse upside the head, but discretion prevailed.

Besides no particular use for them, caliber-creep in reloading, which will be required due to $ of ammo. Really need to shoot what I've got a lot more before adding anything to the stable.

233 Less boom than a .45 but more power than a 9mm? What you want is a .40 S&W. The bad news is the .40 is currently in ill-odor, as police departments abandon it for the 9mm with new and improved bullets. The good news is there are lots of police trade-ins out there right now.

I haven't found Mag-N-Porting on a .41 particularly efficacious. The .41 is easy to reload, and almost a necessity for both cost and versatility reasons. It's a great hunting cartridge.

240 Found a nice gun shop here called The Bullet Hole. Roommate Brent is a firearms snob and asked about a Ruger Speed Six. They were familiar and took his name in case one hit the market. I brought his Henry 22 survival rifle to the TX MOME. It was like buttah. At some point, I'll get a sidearm for myself. There was a nice Sig that fit my hand pretty well. About 800 bucks. I've shot Glocks and Colts, so maybe I just need to fire a few and decide from there.

Another one to look for in the heavy metal 10mm group is the S&W 10x6 series, if you can find one and also find magazines for them. I have a 1076 and the added weight helps with controlling recoil for sure.

273 Dear Morons, my hubby has a question. We attended TX MoMe but got there Saturday too late to shoot. He did help pick up brass on the pistol range. Anyhow, He asks:

Any good bench-rest shooters here?

I have an AR10 that I built as best as I could after a lot of research - I rank myself at about 6 out of 10 for bench rest shooting skills, and have gotten many 0.7 MoA groups out of it. I'm interested in seeing what someone who really knows their business could get out of it. I have little doubt that it could do quite a bit better with somebody who knew WTF they were doing.

In a nutshell: Bartlein/Craddock barrel, Diamond triggertech, JP SCS and the best assembly/fitting practices I could find.

Best ammo tried is Federal Gold Medal Match and Swiss P Sniper RUAG, but darn near everything shoots great out of it (except for True Velocity, that stuff is total shit).

Anyone willing to give it a try in the 2026 meetup?
