My Sainted Mother worked midnights as a L&D nurse. Our most persistent memories is one of her seated at the breakfast table in a slip, smoking a cig with a two inch ash, and a cold cup of coffee in front of her.

28 So for the first time in my life, I cooked a standing rib roast today.

OK, not really. There was nothing "standing," and it was boneless. I got it at Costco, a USDA prime ribeye chunk, 5 point 3 or whatever, enough to feed our family, those that were with us, of seven.

I had bought a thermometer probe connected to a bluetooth thing that reported progress to my phone. I gave it the sea salt (lots) then pepper, then and oil rub then a whole lot of chopped fresh rosemary leaves, and a place in the fridge to brine for 14 hours. Then out and rest to get some warmth from the room, then into a 200 F. oven for . . .

You know all the rest. It was perfect. Medium rare end to end, through and through, the 525 F. quick heat bomb at the end giving it a coat of burn. Melt in your mouth beef, perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned.

All got washed down with a Cannonau de Sardegna grenache red wine, lots of it.

35 Never mind....

Merry Christmas, everyone 🎄🎄🎄

You never know which present is going to be "the one" - DD#3 loved the silly box of Panda-shaped Band-Aids that I bought on a whim. SIL#2 was thrilled with a book I got him which was out-of-print which he had been wanting for a long time. He had just checked on Amazon and was disappointed to find that it was "unavailable" ('cuz we had already bought it for him 😊, so when he opened it today, he was beyond thrilled.

Hubby asked how much we had spent on it, and I told him it didn't matter, because of how happy it made SIL (who is just the sweetest). He was okay after I told him, because he agreed with me (he's the sweetest, too!).

Gave DD#1 & DD#3 both versions of the same afghan that I made last year - different colorways that worked with their respective home decors - they both loved them! Forgot to take a picture of them with them, though, and they have already packed them up since they are leaving tomorrow 😪.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with those that they love 😊♥️🎄

48 Growing up, the start of Christmas season was when the Spiegel holiday catalog arrived. My brother and I could pick out as many things as we wanted but we only ever got one or two, if it was good year.
Mostly we got new underwear.
My wife and I just got back from our daughter and son in laws house where we celebrated with our grandsons who are five and ten. The amount of gifts they received was amazing. But the best part is when they thanked us and told us how much they love us. Not just for gifts but for what we do with them all year.
I’m going to make an old fashioned and then off to bed. Merry Christmas all.

Doug Collins has it written in his will that his heirs cannot accept the silver medal.

150 >> It’s even weirder when you consider that the very same day is also called midsummer.

There are three main season definitions. The one there is called solar seasons. The equinoxes and solstice define the middle of the seasons. There, the cross-quarter points define the start and end of the seasons.

With astronomical, they define the start. That is the one we most commonly use.

Then there's meteorological seasons, which align with calendar months, which works out pretty well at least for the typical weather patterns for us in the mid latitudes.

David Bernstein
@ProfDBernstein
If ”free Palestine“ propagandists want to claim Jesus as Palestinian, they are welcome to him, but they need to also claim Judas, the Sanhedrin, the mob that chose Barabas over Jesus, and all the other Judean actors whom Christians have laid the Deicide on, leading to centuries of violemce against Jews. “The Palestinians killed Jesus?”

215 Hello, Morons and ettes! I somehow survived the festivities &d a grand time. When I was busy I could forget my sore back & exhaustion. I've mostly been busy for three days.

I plan to spend Boxing Day in a near coma (I like to say comatoast vs comatose) vs boxing anyone.

I just remembered a black/white no audio (Civil War Era) video of me, about 6yrs old,on Christmas morning, highjacking my younger brother's pedal fire truck. We both had chickenpox and apparently I was the fittest. I was wearing a complete red cowgirl outfit with hat, six shooter, holster & boots at the time. That was probably a fun Christmas for all involved!

Chickenpox 3wks isolation with our sons was possibly the worst part of being a mother. Nightmares were made of this. One son, with curly blond hair wore his hair like Pebbles Flinstone for a week. The pediatrician said the worst case he'd ever seen...a measles-like rash that blistered. He was not itchy, he was in pain, and I was along with him. I put him in my home pediatric ICU and washed his sheets daily and changed his pillowcase twice a day. He wore socks on his hands to prevent infections from scratching, and hung out in loose pj's.He looked pitiful.

The Coast Guard uses a technique called fast-roping, where troops descend a thick rope from a helicopter to board a ship quickly. This method allows multiple personnel to deploy simultaneously, making it efficient for operations like seizing a tanker at sea

I recently learned of the traditional English Quarter Days, which were used in Medieval times to denote what we would call fiscal quarters. All contracts, especially concerning agriculture, started and ended on these days, and each marks 1/4 of the year.

The traditional dates were March 25, June 24, Sept 29, and Dec 25, and were named Lady Day, Midsummer Day, Michaelmas, and Christmas Day.
Each was treated as a great feast day.

I hope your Christmas went well. Mine did, for a wonder. Linda knew what she was getting (coffee and a jewelry box), because she'd asked for them. She also pointed me to a chain and a cat charm on eBay that she would like, both reasonably priced.

She gave me a large wooden box, like a cigar box I guess, large enough for me to store my various tobaccos; a little vial of men's cologne; and, get this, an air purifier/filter. "Tobacco-adjacent," she said. I would like to use it, but I hope it's not too noisy.

Anyway, I hope you all had a good Christmas and will be able to enjoy the rest of what everybody calls "the holidays."

Lady Day, March 25, was the start of the new calendar year in Britain until the adopted the New Style calendar in 1752 (wouldn't call it Gregorian, because Catholic).

By that time, the Gregorian had jumped 11 days ahead, and after Sept 2, they jumped to Sept 14, and then started the new year on Jan 1 thereafter. Thus 1752 had little less than 9 months.
