THE MORNING RANT: We Should Cheer for Bari Weiss to Fail in Her Effort to Rehabilitate CBS’ Reputation

CBS News logo Bari Weiss.png

There is a civil war being fought at CBS News. The battle is being played out between Bari Weiss, its new left-of-center editor-in-chief, and the left-of-Trotsky journalists she inherited at the laughingstock news operation.

There are many conservatives cheering Ms. Weiss on in her battle against her hyper-partisan corps of journalists. I’m not one of them. In fact, I’m cheering for the insurgent “journalists” to prevail, and to maintain CBS News’ well-earned reputation for being unethical, dishonest, and openly hostile to impartial political coverage.

In fact, my worst fear is that Ms. Weiss might succeed in restoring CBS News to a level of respectability such that it might able to reassert its liberal influence on politics as it once did.

The recent imbroglio is due to Ms. Weiss yanking a typical 60 Minutes hit job just hours before it was to air. If you are reading this, you are almost certainly acquainted with the story. A 60 Minutes journalist, Sharyn Alfonsi, who has a history of dishonest hit jobs against Republicans*, produced a sob story about Venezuelan illegal immigrants being deported to “CECOT,” a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. (*In 2021, Ms. Alfonsi famously ran a hit piece against Ron DeSantis accusing him of prioritizing Publix as a provider of Covid shots in exchange for campaign contributions. The story was subsequently debunked and widely criticized by Florida politicians of both parties.)

Ms. Alfonsi’s story alleged that these Venezuelan deportees were being tortured at CECOT at the behest of the Trump administration, but she did not bother to provide any rebuttals from the Trump administration, which had been provided to CBS News, as acknowledged by left-wing outlet Axios:

• One of the main reasons Weiss cited for pulling the segment was that the "60 Minutes" team didn't include any of the three on-the-record statements from the White House, State Department and Department of Homeland Security that were provided to CBS News journalists.

• According to a source familiar with the "60 Minutes" team's correspondence with the administration, journalists reached out to press officials at the White House, State Department and DHS, all of which provided comment to CBS News ahead of the piece's anticipated run date.

• None of those comments, which varied in length and substance, were included in the piece.

We all know 60 Minutes as the show on which Dan Rather self-immolated his career by using forged military documents in an effort to harm George W. Bush’s 2004 presidential campaign. It’s also the show that spliced together various ramblings of Kamala Harris in 2024 to try to make it sound like she was making coherent answers to questions. And 60 Minutes is also the show that falsely claimed Hunter Biden’s laptop was not really his in the last weeks of the 2020 election, in an effort to push Joe Biden over the finish line.

CBS News has a well-earned reputation for being a place where journalistic malpractice is not considered a problem, it’s policy. I don’t want that to change. As Margot Cleveland joked about 60 Minutes ”At this point I wouldn't even trust CBS News division to tell me how many minutes were in an hour...”

How bad is the media’s disrepute?

“Trust in Media at New Low of 28% in US: Republicans' confidence in mass media to report news ‘fully, accurately and fairly’ now at 8%” [Gallup – 10/02/2025]

Americans’ confidence in the mass media has edged down to a new low, with just 28% expressing a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in newspapers, television and radio to report the news fully, accurately and fairly. This is down from 31% last year and 40% five years ago.

Meanwhile, seven in 10 U.S. adults now say they have “not very much” confidence (36%) or “none at all” (34%).

The legacy media is fully discredited, and that is a good thing. There is no “scandal” that network news divisions can promote at this point that will be taken as fact.

It’s important to remember that Bari Weiss does not dispute the general thesis of the 60 Minutes piece that was pulled, specifically that deportees are being subject to Trump-approved torture. She simply wants the story to come across as impartial journalism, not as another clumsy “we finally got him” hit job.

Therefore, I hope Ms. Weiss fails. The last thing we need is for the legacy media to have its reputation restored to a point that it can once again promote left-wing propaganda with a veneer of respectability. Instead, let CBS and the rest of the legacy news media proceed down the path to permanent irrelevance.

20 All of network and cable news is rearranging chairs on the titanic. The average cable news viewers is late 60s and network is late 50s. The entire industry has about 10 years left before their entire audience no longer exists.

It doesn’t really matter. By the time people are that age they’re already set politically. Nobody is changing their mind because of a 60 minute segment. They’re just reconfirming the biases.

Correct. I canceled my "newspaper" years ago when they ran a large, local article about some Mammy that needed help at Christmas time for all her chirruns and to keep the heat on, blah blah blah. In the background of the picture accompanying the article, a large screen TV played in the background at Mammy's place.

31 Nobody watches TV news anymore.
Technology has moved on.
There are no more newspapers laying in suburban driveways before sun up anymore. They've gone the way of milk bottles on the stoop.
Like buggy whips, teletype, Morse code and AM radio the world has moved on.
It's just that so much money was invested for so many decades into the world of broadcasting that they can't let it go. Plus it held such sway over the culture, fed so many egos, and made l lot of people rich.
But when was the last time you sat in at breakfast in a Bob Evans with your newspaper spread out across the plates while you greedily consumed the editorial page, sports stories or comic strips.
When was the last time you sat at an airport gate and observed people reading magazines?
Broadcast media will die. Not tomorrow, but in due season. Like silent movies, it's had it's run.
But now it's time for something better.

She was very instrumental in the push to get the lie about Tulsi Gabbard being a "toady" for Assad in Syria, because Tulsi had the audacity to question the narrative that was being pushed at the time, about Assad gassing his own people.

For years now it hasn't been able to explain major fires or crashes in the area (you have to go to a local TV affiliate's website for that). 78 The idea that somehow moving CBS News to "the middle" is gonna improve ratings is inherently flawed.
On top of the fact, as discussed prior, that the audience for both cable and network news in demographically dying off, the reality is that most Americans have firm views about politics and current events and tune into the outlets that already reflect their perspectives.
CBS "moving to the middle" isn't gonna draw any new conservative viewers, and most independents are LIV's that don;t pay attention to politics the way devoted progressives or conservatives do.
Therefore, all CBS is going to accomplish is LOSING a % of their current viewership that watch CBS to see their progressive perspectives reinforced.
So, this move, if it even happens, will hurt CBS ratings, not help.

I now go to a Bible Church that teaches the Bible, word for word, one book at a time. We spent last year in Revelation and we are starting Philippians in January. The church has more than doubled in size in the 8-9 years we have been going.

The fact that he has accomplished this while we can't means El Salvador's criminal justice system is far better than ours. The next step is to stop trying to do things that don't work. Punishment beyond what is necessary to protect society is pointless and is damaging to those involved in running the prison system. El Salvador has done amazing things and there is every reason to believe they can improve even more, leaving the US system further behind.

135 107 Must be a fair amount of money to be made in selling horseshit to the masses.
-----------------------------
Well, I think a more correct take would be that it's been extremely ruminative for SOME people to sell horseshit to the masses. Once a few people 'make bank', everyone else jumps on board.

This is how you end up with so many competing FM country music stations. One or two thrive, and then the others change ownership constantly because the market is already saturated.

Until the mid 1990s there was a commercial FM classical station in Philadelphia (WFLN) that had a huge reach (it was one of the first FM stations in the 1940s, so it is allowed to blast its signal more than most stations). The station had lots of classy advertisers. It can't have been doing badly. But the owners decided that since the most popular top 40 station in the market made X amount of money, if they switched from classical to top 40 they would make the same amount of money. The station went through numerous format changes and now is one of those stations with no human announcers (everything is programmed by corporate in FL or wherever).

There's actually a part of the country in the north, "Somaliland," the former British Somalia, that actually seems to have its act together, but isn't recognized by any other country.

Makes sense that it was the part of Somalia ruled by the Brits.

That the Italian-ruled part of Somalia is a basket case is not really a surprise.

Nobody outside retirement home boomers and airports watches news shows at this point anyway. As an institution, news shows are dead and leftists are just accepting losing money in order to deliver propaganda to at least SOME people.

Just like print newspapers before them. People haven't sat down and reads a newspaper in decades. Only a tiny handful of them stay in business because they still provide propaganda value.

And just like print newspapers before them, they are starting to disappear not because they lose money (they've lost money for so long they don't even consider making money a factor), but because they are no longer providing value as propaganda. Propaganda is pointless unless its actually seen.

230 A minimum of a 5-10% boost at the polls.
That's how much of a head start and advantage Democrats have in every election.

The other day, I heard someone going on about how "wait, Obama is a muslim?!"
And I was like, "yeah, this has all been known. The bit about the muzzie call to prayer being the most beautiful sound, the significant time in mulsim Indonesia (where he ate dog), the (near-impossible for non-muslims) trip to Pakistan, the bowing to all the Saudis, etc."
Not "officially" a muslim--just did and behave in all sorts of "I'm a muslim" ways.

A guy named Tim Groseclose (formerly at UCLA) put a number on how news reporting bias affected elections and you are spot on with 8-10 percent bias effect on voting toward the left. He estimated that in his "Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind" book in 2012. Very savvy guy on economics and that book made him a target for every lefty academic in poli sci. Now at George Mason in the Mercantus center.

Media has changed since then but the legacy media still has a hold on older Americans that can't seem to change their habits.

They are trying to stave off the ensuing peasant rebellions in places like France, Germany, etc. by elections. This response is likely to put paid to the EU which is a near copy of the old USSR including its incompetence and bankruptcy toward the end.

247 Ban Barnes and Noble!

Antonio Moore is a repeat offender who, according to police and eyewitnesses, entered a Palm Beach Barnes & Noble on Tuesday night just before 8 p.m. and stabbed 65-year-old Loncharich in the back before fleeing and hiding in a nearby patch of woods.

Moore told police that he stabbed her because he had an "internal buildup that led to his fight-or-flight response kicking in," AKA he had a psychotic episode and stabbed the nearest person to him.

Groseclose's work relies on econometrics to a high degree which makes it inaccessible to some. Tim was a Stanford Business School PhD in the 90's.

Where the key nexus for the future is social media and the Internet which is why the Euros are so frantic as is the left in this country. The amount of fake and gay propaganda even spewed by bots and paid per post shills is simply astonishing in its magnitude. And with algorithms, etc. for repressing some people's voices while amplifying others, is something that propagandists have dreamed about for decades.

But, in decentralization and breakup of the mass media, the left is trying to get the band back together by censorship and Big Tech control. Musk buying Twitter is one of those situations where the left and censors simply cannot abide so you get the Eurocoms going after him.
