27 All of the guns could fire both solid shot and explosive shells. The 18-caliber 274-millimeter Modèle 1870 gun fired an armor-piercing, 216.0-kilogram (476.2 lb) shell while the gun itself weighed 23.21 metric tons (22.84 long tons). The gun fired its shell at a muzzle velocity of 434 m/s (1,424 ft/s) and was credited with the ability to penetrate 360 millimeters (14.3 in) of wrought iron armor at the muzzle.

59 The level of realistic detail is incredible. I first thought it was a photograph. After looking at it for a few minutes I really began to appreciate the talent needed to create the image: exact lines, accurately placed shadows, even the fiber in the hawsers used to maneuver the cannon. (Glad I don't have to move that thing.) I wonder if this is supposed to be a new ship or a repaired one because everything is so bright and clean. Clearly it's not in a battle as the sailor is leaning nonchalantly on the housing. Also, there is no sign of ammunition at hand. This is the kind of painting I would expect to see on the wall of a naval institute or maritme museum.

That's because it is often situational. When I'm at work, or conducting commerce, I can hear just fine because people are speaking over background noise and take care with their communication because it's important things are understood so the work gets completed.

At home, people mumble, turn away, talk while walking away, talk while leaving the room and so I lose a lot of it.

When friends come over or at a party (such as Christmas yesterday), I followed conversation easily. But today everyone is now mumbling, talking into the phone, etc.

The loss is also uneven. Higher pitches are what I am losing. I can hear men just fine, but women kind of fade out. I'm trying to determine if this is a feature or a bug.

This isn't an early one. This was second generation, so all-metal construction, and there was variation between turret (Monitor-style, not Iowa-style), barbette, and central battery. Broadsides were less efficient in terms of traverse, but more seaworthy.

Right, it isn’t a racial or ethnic thing. Rioters need to be stopped regardless of skin tone. What is apparent is municipalities and state governments had a kind of smart frugality. Fire equipment, the fire department and firemen are already being paid. Garbage trucks and snowplows would be deployed around buildings, that kind of thing. Use what you have.

Today we have eleventy gazillion different agencies, and none of them can be used for anything, “not my department”, and the ones tasked for any given situation are often populated with incompetent grifters and water walkers.

One good “push” and a lot of places will go down hard, and ain’t gettin’ back up again.

My father for the last several years of his life refused to believe he was going deaf.

So much so that he chose to share the TV with everybody in the neighborhood by turning it up to 50 and then acted all confused when asked to turn the volume down so people could have a conversation with him without screaming at the top of their lungs.

His favorite phrases at that point were; “Huh?”, “What?”, and finally, “Say that again, I can’t understand you.” followed up by “Stop raising your voice at me.”

I recently saw a photo of a cannon being installed in a Civil War era warship. I don't recall the exact ship, or whether it was Union or Confederate, but it was sizeable and fixed, not movable.

127 Canon de 27 cm, modèle 1870
Gustave Bourgain

Gustave Bourgain was appointed Painter de la Marine in 1887.
Wikipedia, in part: Peintre de la Marine (French pronunciation: [pɛ̃tʁə də la maʁin], Painter of the Fleet) is a title awarded by the minister of defence in France to artists who have devoted their talents to the sea, the French Navy and other maritime subjects. It was set up in 1830 by the July Monarchy and can be awarded to painters, photographers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors.

Rights and privileges
Signature of Jean Rigaud as Peintre de la Marine
The title is unpaid but does grant certain facilities and privileges:
being able to embark on French Navy vessels
wearing a uniform
being allowed to follow one's artistic signature with an anchor
belonging to the Service historique de la Marine.
---
I couldn't locate Canon de 27 cm, modèle 1870, shipboard until reading Wikipedia, Canon de 27 C modèle 1864.

It covers in more detail for both naval and costal carriages and on ships.

In part: "The 27 cm guns on (Ironclads) Friedland and Colbert were model 1870 guns.[31]"

AI Overview - A ship's gun crew was part of a larger ~800-man crew.

Black powder was rapidly becoming ineffective as a propellant against armor, and ships had rams fitted on them as a result.

At the battle of Lissa (1866), cannon were generally ineffective against armor, but ramming worked, so boarding actions were briefly back on the menu.

Type of Powder: These guns started with standard black powder but were later modified (Mle 1870 M) to use slower-burning, higher-quality powders like Belgian Wetteren, allowing for bigger charges.
Loading: It was a muzzle-loading cannon, meaning powder was loaded from the front, followed by wadding and then the projectile.
Powder Charge: The modified 24 cm version (related to your 27cm inquiry) used around 46 kg of powder for a significant velocity boost.
Purpose: Used on naval ironclads (like Colbert-class) and coastal defenses, these big guns were essential for their time, relying on chemical propellant (gunpowder)

It's been brewing for a while. A bit issue is generational turnover. The Boomers are moving on - either to the Great Beyond or assisted living, and young families are replacing them. Truth be told, this is a super kid-friendly town.

What that means is that a higher percentage of homeowners have to pay property tax and city income tax. When the population skewed older, a big chunk of voters were exempt. Now a younger generation wants some tax relief. Our income tax has a sunset coming up, and the sense is that it will not be renewed. It only narrowly passed in the first place, and again, a bunch of it was liberals voting to tax someone else.

Hard to know whether to attribute that to skill or luck. The rail guns deployed against the Anzio beachhead rarely hit any significant target. They also could not sustain a barrage for long due to Allied air superiority, and would generally wheel out of their hiding spot, lob a small handful of shells and then scamper back into hiding.

The bigger impact was the randomness and the sound of an incoming shell, described as "like a freight train." Quite terrifying.

Anzio Annie was firing blind. No spotting. No correction. It was a nuisance/terror weapon.

In naval gunnery they watch the fall of the shot and do correction, and as ranges extended, they had "clocks" on the masts so that other ships could adjust fire knowing what their neighbors were shooting at.

Pretty amazing stuff in terms of applied math.

True, dat. Hearing aids also amplify the noise. My own hearing loss makes for me being unable to focus my hearing on the desired source of the sound I want to hear.

So a deaf guy gets Elon Musk's neuralink implant, couple to an AI, so that his hearing aids can be focused precisely. He goes back to the doctor a few days later. "They don't work. I went to the strip club, and didn't hear a damned thing." Doctor says, "well, tits don't make any noise."

If I recall from the book “Sink the Bismarck” the German guns were shooting in a high parabolic arc so that the shells would be dropping straight down and would pierce the deck.

And dad, married, 3 kids. They’re pretty cool, never heard anything political from them. Never see any political signs on their lawn, no stickers on the cars, etc. They go to church. The dad is into dirt bikes with his sons. Not exactly leftists.

167 True, dat.

176 One interesting bit about the German WWII rail guns is the fact that the gun carriage had very little ability to traverse (side to side) so for directional aiming had to be located at a curved section of rail line, and the train would move along the curve until the barrel was pointed in the right direction. It wasn't a terribly precise aiming technique.

People I know who complain about them, when I ask how long ago they got theirs, and they say "Oh, about 20 years ago," I try to convince them to get new ones, but if they made up their minds 20 years ago, it's hard to get them to change it now.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon
======
Not much talked about but semi smokeless (adding nitrocellulose to black powder) or duplex loading for awhile was a thing as well using a small charge of smokeless powder to set off the larger black powder charge. Navies did it in reverse using a small blackpowder charge to set off the larger smokeless main charge.

Schuetzen rifle shooters often loaded duplex loads as the nitrocellulose burned hotter and reduced fouling of the blackpowder. Not recommended for experimentation for the most part for all but the most experienced reloaders and definitely not appropriate for antiques or black powder only guns due to pressures generated being rather unpredictable.

Lesmok and Kings were examples of commercial semi smokeless powders and loaded ammo available roughly coinciding with the rise and fall of mercuric primers.

226 AI Overview, in part -

French systems were more advanced, developing an effective interrupted-screw obturator (sealing mechanism) in 1872 with the De Bange system, which would eventually become the standard for large-caliber naval artillery. French ironclads built in the 1870s, such as the Colbert class, were equipped with breech-loading guns like the Canon de 24 C modèle 1870.

The universal transition to large-caliber breech-loading guns on ironclads was a gradual process that occurred throughout the 1870s and 1880s. A serious accident on board the British HMS Thunderer in 1879, where a muzzle-loading gun exploded because it had been double-loaded, highlighted the safety risks of muzzle-loading systems and was a pivotal event that led the Royal Navy to decisively change to breech-loaders.

By the mid-1880s, breech-loading rifled cannons had largely superseded muzzle-loaders as the primary armament on warships worldwide, allowing for longer barrels, higher projectile velocities, and improved armor penetration.

229 It’s not going to do much. H1Bs are for 3 years with an extension up to 6 years. So the $100k is really $16,600 a year.

Is it nothing? No. But it’s still nowhere near the difference between H1B and US salaries. An H1B is paid $50-60/h a comparable American gets $100+.

That $16k a year is made up by February.

Is that $100k upfront? Because shelling out $100k upfront for 100 H1b's changes the equation, regardless of how it breaks down.

Upfront. The new rule on prevailing wages takes it out of employer's hands to determine as well. H1B workers have to be paid prevailing wage using three sources only. The Gubmint itself, an authoritative body (usually professional socieites), or hiring an expensive expert analyst to do a study for that particular job. The last two can be challenged by Dept of Labor, only the first is a safe harbor.

I was a teenager going to lunch at the nearby McD when the girl looked at me after my order and said, "Sir, it's going to be a moment while we rotate your nuggets", I gave her a head tilt and then we both laughed our asses off.

232 H1b fee of $100k applies,
"The supplemental $100,000 payment applies to:

H-1B petitions filed on or after September 21, 2025, for individuals who are outside the United States and do not hold a valid H-1B visa; and
Petitions requesting consular processing (visa issuance abroad), port of entry notification, or pre-flight inspection for beneficiaries inside the U.S.
The payment also applies if:

A petition requests a change of status, amendment, or extension of stay, and USCIS finds the individual is ineligible for these requests (e.g., not in a valid non-immigrant status), or
The individual departs the U.S. before the petition is adjudicated."

It applies to the 3 yr extension requests. From the USCIS website.

233 My mother ignored her hearing aids, too. When I tried to help her, I realized a big part of the problem was her hands were too arthritic to manage inserting and removing them.

If . . . AND . . . .

So it applies IF the "USCIS finds the individual is ineligible for these requests (e.g., not in a valid non-immigrant status) . . . ." I read that not in a valid H1B status or similar non-immigrant statuses of which I am not currently aware.* That sounds like a small subset of overall H1Bs to my reading.

*Or also left the U.S., basically restarting H1B process.

And nood.
