Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - December 23, 2025 [Doof]![]() Happy Festivus Today is your day, Seinfeld fans. — Ingenuous Firebrand 🐆🇺🇸 (@ING2Firebrand) December 23, 2025 Festivus begins with the Airing of Grievances. Somebody got started a bit early. Found this gem on Sunday morning at the end of Saturday's Club ONT. ![]() Festivus also includes Feats of Strength. OK - here ya go!
Is Festivus a real thing outside of the Seinfeld universe? I doubt it. Funny episode though! The airline has confirmed it will no longer automatically reimburse “customers of size” who need to buy an extra seat for space. The benefit had previously been in place for more than 20 years at Southwest Airlines. Under the original policy, passengers who “encroached upon any part of the neighboring seat” were eligible for a complimentary adjacent seat, with the airline clearly stating that armrests were the “definitive boundary” between seats. *** Starting January 27, 2026, any customer flying on Southwest who needs additional space will be required to purchase a second seat, with fewer guarantees they’ll get their money back. In a statement, the airline urged travelers to buy both seats at the time of booking to avoid “last-minute purchases or rebooking at the airport.”----- Media bias shows up in a multitude of ways. See if you can spot the bias here. Journey keyboardist opens up about relationship with Charlie Kirk Two months after releasing a song in honor of Charlie Kirk, Journey keyboardist and guitarist Jonathan Cain is opening up about his relationship with the late conservative activist. “Charlie’s one of a kind,” he said during an appearance on “The 700 Club,” a Christian talk show hosted by Wendy Griffith on the Christian Broadcasting Network. “He was irreplaceable.” Cain spoke about his single, “No One Else,” dedicated to Kirk, on the show released Tuesday, Dec. 16, and recalled first meeting Kirk at the Republican National Convention in 2016.OK so far, I'd say. Let's keep reading. “He was all excited telling us about how he was going to go to campuses and just change everybody’s mind and give conservative kids the good news, a voice,” Cain said, adding that Kirk inspired him to openly speak of his conservative and religious values. “He brought a lot of people to Jesus,” Cain went on. “He was unafraid. … You can’t silence us.” Kirk was a polarizing figure in American politics, known for his incendiary rhetoric about gender identity, race, gun rights and religion. In 2012, he founded Turning Point USA to mobilize conservative students on college campuses against what he deemed “woke” ideology. The organization was widely criticized for spreading misinformation. On Sept. 10, while speaking at Utah Valley University, he was shot and killed. A recent report by the Washington Post revealed that the man accused of the murder, Tyler Robinson, allegedly sent messages about the shooting on Discord about 80 minutes after it happened. The musician explained that he was writing a pastor appreciation song at the time of Kirk’s death, set to be part of a larger EP. Upon revisiting the music, he instead decided to dedicate the track to his slain friend as a standalone single. Cain performed “No One Else” at the end of the televised interview while a series of clips of Kirk flashed across the screen.I'm sure you noticed that completely unnecessary paragraph in there. It did nothing to improve the point of article, but it sure did signal the author's liberal bona fides. Complete garbage in an otherwise decent factual article. ----- Big news out of the Smokey Mountains. After 64 Years, Dollywood Announces Immediate Closure On Saturday, Dolly Parton’s beloved Dollywood theme park announced an “unscheduled” indefinite closure. *** On December 20, Dollywood posted a press release to its official Instagram story, explaining that the Dollywood Express attraction had indefinitely closed due to “unscheduled” but necessary maintenance work. What a misleading headline! It sure did make it seem as though the whole park was closing. Anyway, garbage "journalism" once again. ----- Fun with Charlie Brown

My favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night. Posted by: fourseasons at December 23, 2025 10:19 PM (3ek7K) --- I love that one. (I like singing it as well.) But there are a couple others that if competes with for me. • I Wonder As I Wander • O Come, Emmanuel Interesting story about that second one. I went to a Dominican Catholic church for a good portion of my childhood. The entire mass was done in a similar kind of chant. And I hated that "carol", because that was one of the ones that they would have us sing. That song made me feel like when you lose your baseball cap and your mom insists you wear your cub scout hat because it's "just as good". Almost nowhere else would I hear that hymn. Decades away from the Dominican service, it's so beautiful--and it's also pretty popular these days. Posted by: Axeman at December 23, 2025 10:27 PM (krQz2) 106

One specific moment that really stuck out is Killian is offering Richards an opportunity to work for him and Richards argues that they made him a villain how can they now make him a hero to which Killian says, "don't worry about it" and immediately took me back to Steve Colbert persuading his audience to cheer for Comey who they had just been booing because the narrative changed Posted by: 18-1 at December 23, 2025 10:44 PM (sKqQm) 155

My festivus complaint is me.
Every single year I have a day of wearing myself out because of procrastination. If I had the energy I'd...ok, I don't know what I'd do to myself as I am not known for harm to myself or others. I buy Christmas (and birthday, etc) gifts months in advance. I buy Christmas cards a a month in advance. I know from my MIL and Martha Stewart you can feeze cookies yet I don't. Marth Stewart, that beetch, always says to wrap gifts when you buy them, but I never do. Therefore, there is always One Fine Day that all of my bad and wicked ways punish me. Today is that day. My husband did help make the entree that is safely in the fridge for dinner tomorrow. I had it all planned, you see. He helped me make some cookie dough. He is a good man who puts up with me in my day of festivus frenzy that surely has to stop this year.I wrapped gifts. He put a doll bed together. Our DIL, returning from a ski trip, texts me that she wants me to make cookies for dessert the night of Christmas. Which I planned to do anyway. Then adds that we need to talk about a side dish. I text ok. Then snap at the poor man who married me. I apologized.Festivus is here! I am going to bed!!! Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at December 23, 2025 10:59 PM (WONhk) 204

--------- Oh, that *is* annoying! My BIL does that too, but he's deaf (I think perhaps mentally 'challenged' also) and uses a relay service for calls. You'd think there's some limit to how many times they'll call the same number in 10-15 minutes' time when it is not an emergency. Finally turned off the answering machine and told him to just text me, I'd reply when able. Ugh. Posted by: JQ at December 23, 2025 10:59 PM (rdVOm) 205

Are they going to have people sit in a seat by the gate before boarding? Like some airlines do to see if your carry on fits? If your arse doesn't fit you can't commit. Or something. The next time I fly I may go to a SW gate,if nearby, to check this out. In Fort Lauderdale, it is Spirit that would entertain with wighat wrestling. I think this SW idea is not going to go well. Interesting 70s music trivia.
Ace's (the band) single hit "How Long (Has This Been Going On)" has never been about what most people take it to be about. And if you know the answer, and you re-listen to it, you'll never hear it the old way again. The secret: their bass player had been two-timing with another band that might have been going places faster. Paul Carrick wrote this song as sort of notes for the confrontation. How Long is as great as smooth mid-road pop gets, so take another listen. Posted by: Axeman at December 23, 2025 11:06 PM (krQz2) 226

Posted by: Kindltot at December 23, 2025 11:31 PM (rbvCR) Great song! I am partial to the saxophone, thanks to many years of bands with our son. He was a professional but got another degree a decade later to support himself. Music is a dicey thing and I tell him, when he moans about waiting a decade, that he did what he wanted and to be happy about his choice. All is well. He found the right girl and married her vs others (he takes after his father in this area). Other son married his HS sweetheart and never gave us any problems. He found out that sleeping on tour busses are not fun for almost a year. So he got that out of his system. This son was the hardest to raise in HS and college, but a great guy in spite of giving me fits. I thought once I was going to shoot blood out of my ears on the phone as he explained, while house sitting for us, that he invited a girl over. If I could have crawled through that line he would probably have not survived. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at December 23, 2025 11:42 PM (WONhk) 365

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at December 24, 2025 12:13 AM (snZF9) Legend. When my bf was getting serious about me, he and a good friend went out for beers. I was studying, as that's what I did. He came back to my apt to tell me this story. Apparently a good looking girl was in the bar and had car trouble. Brand new car. My guy and his friend tried to do whatever to the carburetor and started the engine on fire. Burned the engine and hood badly. They claimed to know what they were doing, but beer was involved, and it was the friend's idea. My husband gives her a ride home to her parent's and our friend puts the moves on her. After burning up her new car the friend and the girl were making out in the backseat. I do admit this friend was good looking (half Navajo/half Mexican). I had to laugh when he told me this story. I am pretty sure her father was not laughing when she told him about her car the next day. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at December 24, 2025 12:22 AM (WONhk) 447

You should look it up - it’s an amazing story, and very convincing. The key is that the Zodiac Killer, when challenged by a news reporter, wrote his name into a 13 figure cryptograph that could never be cracked. This amateur detective used AI for months to finally crack the cryptograph - and it turns out to be the name of the top suspect in the Black Dahlia murder, a name that was never released to the public.

I have to admit that I have avoided listening to Dream Theater, since Images and Words never impressed me as much as it did some of my friends.
Pull Me Under has always been one of my favorite tracks from them, but the rest of I&W seemed a little ... twee, IIRC. And I had kind of expected DT to be prog-metal for mass consumers. But in listening to that clip of Octavarium I'm hearing chord progressions reminiscent of Tony Banks, where it keeps a tonal feeling but it doesn't seem to be in any one key. And I'm also hearing quite a bit of Spock's Beard, which might make sense because Portnoy was already a long-time frequent collaborator with Neal Morse by 2005. So, it could be easily the case that he was influenced by the Beard, from the mid-90s. Posted by: Axeman at December 24, 2025 12:49 AM (krQz2) 474

Happy Christmas Eve!...not here yet due to time change.
Another burnt up car story. I was with a bunch of HS girls at youth club. Back in the Civil War times we had wooden purses (which, I know, was weird).I guess I was known by my purse. I left it in the car. We were watching a movie at a church (it was interdenominaltion) and a guy came up to me & said, "your car is on fire." It was not my car but my friend's mother's. We had been smoking cigs en route & a girl threw hers out the window & it came back in and set the backseat on fire. Someone yanked it out & it was smoldering. You could see all the way back to the trunk. Driving home my friend had the brilliant idea to "run away to NOLA." I said no, because I wasn't going to get into much trouble, & didn't. We drive to her house & she tells her father. He came roaring out of the house cussing (no one cussed then, & it gave me some stress). I called my mother to come fetch me. Reasons unknown they put the still smoldering backseat on the front porch of their 100yr old wooden farmhouse. Her older brother came home later & threw it onto the front yard before their house burned down. Country girls have adventures. Still an hour to go, before Christmas Eve.
The ghosts of Christmases Past, dancing in my dreams. Mom. Dad. Grandparents. Friends, pets, memories... Damned dusty here. Posted by: JQ at December 24, 2025 02:08 AM (rdVOm) Yeah it sucks watching things shrink over the year. My grandmother had a large christmas eve gathering. 20-25 people minimum, sometimes closer to to 30. I watched it all dwindle to just a few of us now at my brother's for christmas eve. Posted by: Romeo13 at December 24, 2025 02:49 AM (mP0Kj) I do. I moved to a house twice the size so I can have decent christmas gatherings on christmas day, and I make sure a few of my unmarried friends with no families left are here. Mrs b has a few friends in the same position that show up too. I don't have kids, so its an adult gathering, but its something. Lord, many of the Horde are weary and hurting and fearful tonight. Wrap them in your love and remind them that you're still with them- and yes, that's no matter what happens and how tired and grief-filled and disappointed they are. Help us to remember that, always.
In Jesus' precious name, Amen. Posted by: Barkingmad59, wandering lurkette at December 24, 2025 03:18 AM (0lzjf) 522
Welp, Cat came in. It's cold out thar!
Time for shuteye. Good night, Horde. We'll make it through the holiday season, yes we will. Merry Christmas Eve. Posted by: JQ at December 24, 2025 03:23 AM (rdVOm) 523

My mom's sister did the thanksgiving thing. She had a fairly large house on a few acres, and that was good for over 30 people minimum, plus a few neighbors. My mother's other sister did easter, so almost the same crowd. My grandmother on my father's side had the huge christmas eve thing. All gone, grandparents gone, all aunts and uncles are gone, mom's entire family is wiped out. The exception is my father and his siblings since they all have the methuselah gene. The cousins are all over the country now, the 2 oldest cousins on my mother's side are gone. Nobody does shit anymore. No “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics?
And I don't know how a Dreams music theme on AoSHQ doesn’t include “Silent Lucidity” by everybody’s favorite band; Queensrÿche. Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 24, 2025 03:36 AM (6ydKt) Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at December 24, 2025 03:38 AM (sAmhv) 526
