Skiing Mount Everest Open Thread

This is insane. He starts off skiing from the top of Mount Everest pretty slowly, but then he hits some very steep areas where slow skiing is pretty much impossible. For long dangerous runs, he's just grinding down on steep ice.

I kept wondering: What happens if he loses a ski?

Also, I wonder: What if he goes over the edge?

And he is on the edge of a precarious ridgeline a few times.

For example, at 6:45 in the video, and 10:00. And around 16:00.

This took place a month ago. Apparently it's a first. At least, climbing Everest and then skiing down without oxygen tanks is a first.

Really amazing. Insane! Consider going full screen for this one or watching it on your TV.

Having watched it all, the fish-eye lens he uses makes the drops appear steeper and deadlier than they are. But... that's really only adding a little bit to it.

And he wasn't even the only guy to ski down Everest last month. An American, Jim Morrison, skied the very dangerous North Face. Though he skied a "gnarlier line," he had the benefit of supplemental oxygen.

Not possible. There are 100s if not 1000s of climbers going up and down every day.

I guess it's possible that Red Bull rented out the entire mountain for several days to make this video, but I doubt that's possible.

As a ski mountaineer myself -- albeit at not nearly the level of these guys -- the answer is: depends.

Usually you try to find the lost ski. If not, you're only option is to make it back down any way you can. Sliding on your ass, etc.

But in cases like this multi-million dollar Red Bull production, the answer is that they have probably 10 sets of skis for the guy in case anything happens.

There probably was 25 people on the mountain shooting this, including helicopter rescue if he got hurt. The entire thing was almost certainly shot in segments, and then edited together to make it look like one long descent.

I did the Valle Blanche run in Chamonix. It takes almost an entire afternoon to make the run from the peak to the bottom. This video is 30 minutes long, including all the build-up. It was heavily edited.

Not to take anything away from the yuge brass balls on this guy, but I assure you it wasn't as dangerous as it looks in the vid.

44 Some years ago, a Japanese skier attempted this. There was a documentary at the time. He did not make the summit and instead started lower on the mountain. He also wore a parachute to slow his descent. He triggered that after only a few seconds. He didn't die but he didn't try again.
"The Man Who Skied Down Everest", was the title of the movie. It was nuts then and remains nuts now. Lots of money and attention seeking. Not worth the effort to watch.

they go up to Montreal and some crazy ones in NH and they loooooooooved to ski fast

last year was the snowboard experiment but I think that has ended. too tall for snowboarding (my conjecture). back to speed skiing (orchid gets the sweats)

205 Everest isn't like that. Let me update you. Nepalese government issues permits. Most of the guide companies now are run by Sherpas. There aren't hundreds and thousands of people going to the summit every day. There are expeditions to base camp and only base camp. There is a short period of time where the weather allows you to go for the summit. I think they went early IIRR.

They get fined by the kilogram for garbage left up there. You might read Guy Kotter's book "Everest Mountain Guide" for more recent info. He took over Adventure Consultants after Rob Hall died in 1996. And don't read Jon Krakauer's book! There are sections where he made up stuff that he hadn't witnessed.

Essentially, for a certain cohort of people that grew up watching reality TV, that is their norm--to live life out in public which is why you see utterances and behaviors inexplicably put online for everyone to see.

It is as if some of that cohort internalized wanting 'fame' at any price of privacy. Even that occurred only for a hot moment of a viral video or tweet.

In a strange way, it is a return to early years of civilization in small villages and settlements. No one had any privacy back then either.

I doubt very many parents back in the day were so dumb as to say something like that.

How a person lives their lives or enforces family discipline, etc. (other than rape, sadistic abuse, etc.) is really a matter for a family or individuals to hash out.

Outside of clearly defined boundary conditions constituting crimes of abuse, most pronouncements by people outside the family dynamic are simply virtue signalling and making claims of the proper way on the basis of some authority whether their own experiences or 'experts'. Both are fallible.

So we essentially get to the problem of the outsider kibitzer who pays no price for failure in their prescriptions and do not have skin in the game telling other people actually involved in the situation how to live.

That is where a lot of trouble starts in societies.
