The Most Played Movies on HBO During the 80s Open Thread

I would call this The Beastmaster thread, but prepare for disappointment: Even the guy compiling this list is shocked that Beastmaster doesn't actually make his list.

But I do have questions. He counts by air dates. Not by times. The difference is that HBO could show a movie on a specific date, but how many times did it show it on that date? He doesn't have that information.

I know that kid-friendly PG movies played all day long on HBO, so maybe a listing of airings by number of times actually aired would give some love to Beastmaster.

Now that I've prepared you for disappointment...

36 we saw the new Knives Out movie on Netflix yesterday. Besides the endless cheap shots against Christians and conservatives or was also incredibly silly and overly complex. It's a shame, the first Knives Out has a certain charm, but each subsequent outing has gotten more messy and ridiculous. Great cast though.

We had the Big Three networks, PBS, and the religious channel that showed old TV classics. At some point we got a tape player that we could play rented movies on.

Other than that, nothing.

I went to Jack in the Box for the first time in a few...decades last week. I had their Ultimate Cheesburger, which was my go-to back when I used to occasionally stop there. The first thing I noticed is that it seemed smaller, and since I was an adult the last time I had one, it wasn't 'cause my hands are bigger. The next thing I noticed is that it tasted not far from the cafeteria cheeseburgers we used to get at school. Admittedly, that is a 4 1/2 decade-old memory, but that's what my brain seized on. I am pretty sure it didn't used to taste that way. It was just not a good burger. The less said about the fries, the better.

Sorry, Jack, but you're off the fast-food burger rotation for good.

The first Mad Max movie also bombed in the USA. So much so that the sequel was called "Road Warrior" in the USA even though it was called Mad Max 2 in Australia and elsewhere. So it wouldn't surprise me if nobody wanted to pay to show the first film in the USA.

In the 90's, Sears was a conglomerate owning a real estate firm (Coldwell Bankers), a Wall Street investment banker--Dean Witter, and insurance (Allstate). All of these made more money for the holding firm than retail sales. To pump up the retail side, they hired a guy who formerly headed Saks and he went into a splurge on softlines--aka clothes, home fashion, etc. because the profit margins at the time were higher on those items. This led to a shift away from the hardlines in investment and floor space. This move ended up flopping and left the company vulnerable for Eddie Lampert.

FWIW, Sears quit the catalog business in 1993 just before a small firm of Amazon in July 1994 started focusing on online selling of books and media.

I think "bombed" implies some kind of wide release. Not many Australian movies were getting play outside of Australia at all. The Australian film industry had essentially died out completely through the 50s and 60s (there were three straight years in the 60s where Australian produced no films at all). The 70s was the result of the Australian government heavily subsidizing film production in the country.

So...fledgling film industry has weird car-based movie...and they get it in a handful of theaters which doesn't do well.

I think Netflix too is vulnerable to death by a hundred cuts. They don't own much of the vast content that they air. That is why they are desperate for WB and its HBO streaming service which means they have negotiating power with the other streaming firms. Disney, for the same reason, opposes the merger of Netflix and WB as does Paramount for obvious reasons. And the movie theater companies also oppose the Netflix takeover due to fears of almost instant transfer of movies to streaming rather than allowing a theater run.

No one wants the WB tv cable properties really.

Blockbuster started a Netflix-like service to compete with them, and they almost succeeded in putting them out of business. The thing that stopped them from doing so was Carl Icahn. He bought a bunch of Blockbuster shares and started pressuring management to shut non-core businesses. When those shut down, it gave Netflix the room to survive, grow, and put Blockbuster out of business for good.

Debt is always a double faced sword where one side benefits a risk take if it works while the other cuts a massive hole in the corporation earnings if it doesn't.

Thus, you get the CEO driven conglomerate approach which never works as well over time as an individual investor simply buying an index fund. But it does churn stock prices.
