Wanna be like Bill Gates?
Step 1 - buy a 119-meter hydrogen hybrid megayacht for $650 million or thereabouts
Step 2 - spend $435K on one tank of fuel

Canadian hockey player Patrick Dovigi spent $435,000 on one tank of fuel to move Bill Gates’ former superyacht

Canadian billionaire and former National Hockey League (NHL) goaltender, Patrick Dovigi, has officially put Bill Gates’ once-hyped superyacht through its paces.

The 119-meter hydrogen hybrid megayacht, named Breakthrough, recently sailed from Europe to Miami after a massive refuelling stop in Gibraltar.

It was the longest trip that the Canadian hockey player had taken on the yacht, and the fuel he needed to take the trip came with an eye-watering price tag.

That single fuel bill reportedly came in at a staggering $435,000.

Video segment at the link. Go ahead and check it out - you'll totally feel like Bill Gates and the guy who bought his big ass boat are everyday folks like you and me.

You go four hour! Why you go four hour?

Engineer Sues Former Employer After Being Fired for Taking Extremely Long Bathroom Breaks

The man, surnamed Li, had been working as an engineer for a company in Jiangsu Province for over a decade when he was let go because of his frequent and long bathroom visits during work hours. The case was recently reported by the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions after the engineer took his former employer to court over his termination.

In its defense, the unnamed company submitted surveillance footage showing Li taking14 extremely long bathroom breaks, the longest of which lasted four hours, in a 30-day period between April and May 2024. Its lawyers also presented evidence that management had contacted Li via chat app when noticing his disappearance, but received no replies, mentioning that his position required him to always be available during work hours.

Check out the story at the link to see how everything came out.

One that jumped to mind was this one that I recall was shown during A Charlie Brown Christmas when I was a kid.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

When Fashion Meets My Over-the-Top Christmas Tree

Usually we’re swooning over the latest runway triumphs, the perfect pumps or a statement coat on Melania that left us all breathless. But this week, with the holidays twinkling brighter than a diamond tiara, my fashion obsession has spilled over into something unexpected: Christmas trees. Christmas trees, you ask? Why yes, because down here in the South, we simply don’t do subtle when it comes to our evergreens. We go big, lush, gloriously layered, and unapologetically extra. Plus, couture can make anything better, even a pine tree. So when I spotted what Burberry, Ladurée, and the like have done to hotel lobby trees this season, I knew these sensory masterpieces demanded a spotlight. Let’s step into the magic…

Burberry at Claridge's

One of the most talked-about collaborations this year is Burberry's partnership with London's Claridge's hotel. Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee designed a 16-foot traditional tree in the lobby, adorned with around 600 hand tied bows crafted from surplus Burberry fabrics, a nod to Victorian symbols of unity. Hanging bells and chess-piece ornaments inspired by Burberry's Equestrian Knight Design add a playful, heritage twist, tying into the label's signature checks and motifs. The overall vibe? Effortless British elegance meets cozy maximalism.

IMG_0026rr.jpg

IMG_0027rr.jpg

Ladurée at The St. Regis

For a dose of decadent Parisian indulgence, French patisserie Ladurée teamed up with The St. Regis hotels in New York and Washington, D.C. The 12-foot trees shimmer with sumptuous velvet bows, oversized macarons, dried florals, and colorful baubles, topped by a grand peacock-blue bow. It’s a feast for the senses, aligning with fashion's ongoing love for food-inspired motifs (think Moschino's playful collections). This collab’s vibe is glittery, gold-toned whimsy.

IMG_0029rr.jpg

David Laport at Riggs

Dutch couture darling David Laport dazzles at Riggs Washington D.C. with "Golden Origins"—an 18-foot celestial masterpiece of hand-sculpted gold pleats nodding to the hotel's banking heritage. It’s vibe is bold, architectural, and sensorially explosive.

IMG_0036rr.jpg

Urs Fischer at The Connaught

Spheres filled with AI-generated human faces glow via LED lights on this outdoor marvel. Symbolizing global togetherness, a take that blends tech with fashion's boundary-pushing narratives (think Balenciaga's digital innovations). This vibe is ethereal avant-garde.

IMG_0037rr.jpg

John Derian x The Green Vase at The Dewberry

In Charleston at my beloved Dewberry, John Derian joins forces with Livia Cetti of The Green Vase for a celebration of pure American style and artistry. The central tree stands tall in a miniature mossy forest of smaller evergreens and faux bois, while paper garlands bloom with delicate dewberry flowers, paperwhites, and amaryllis, handcrafted petals so lifelike you can almost feel their velvety softness and catch a faint, fresh floral whisper. The vibe is layered, collected elegance with a whimsical decoupage charm. Utterly divine.

IMG_0028rr.jpg

My own tree? It’s a full-on spectacle: floor-to-ceiling Fraser fir dripping in layers of ribbon, chinoiserie ornaments, velvet bows, polished metals and just enough sparkle for an aesthetic of nostalgic elegance. Tell me about your tree and if you went with a fancy vibe, traditional aesthetic, or something completely different!

Thanks, Piper!

There's a radio show in Sarasota devoted to investment advice. Host told a story about how he hired a guy to bring his 50-ish foot boat from California to Cabo, or thereabouts. The guy told him what the fuel requirement would be. Apparently, most marinas are cash-only, so he gave the guy something like sixteen grand in a suitcase to cover it. No big deal. Well, the bank closed his account not long afterwards, and he had a hell of a time finding another bank to take his business. The struggle is real, I guess...

Every person stepping off the plane was carrying E coli into the US - it's the principal bacterium in the human colon. So, unless this was a super-duper E. coli that Xiang was smuggling in, there was no need to smuggle it - it's already here.

Yep. Not just the shopping of course but the vibe. It had a life to it, buzzing with not just consumerism but a sense of optimism and enjoyment. It was a wholesome social hub for teenagers, a place to develop your interpersonal skills, navigate current culture and trends, and scope out chicks with your buddies. A true piece of Americana. Instagram and Discord have taken the place of hanging out with friends in real life. Recession and mail order and COVID have devastated brick and mortar retail stores. Inflation has made even the food court and a movie an expensive proposition rather than a cheap outing for broke high school kids. It's a tremendous loss.

Trump just blew the so-called “experts” out of the water by rattling off how hard drug prices are crashing.

Look at this

Blood thinner: $750 → $16
HIV meds: $1,500 → $217
Hep B treatment: $1,400 → $413
Hep C drugs: $25,000 → $2,500

I remember Crystal Castles. Basically had a track ball instead of a joystick.

Back in the 80s, there was a gameshow called Starcade that had contestants competing playing video games. The only episode of it I remember had a kid whose favorite game was Crystal Castles. It was one of the games contestants could choose. The kid avoided it until the final round, and the kid kicked his oppenent's ass.

Galaga and Ms Pac Man were my go-to games, but I loved Tempest too.

Qix annoyed me. I liked it, but once it got to the levels where the Qix split in half, so you could get a bonus for drawing a line between them, I'd work so hard at that that I'd draw myself into a corner.

Then the more-complex later-80s games..... I spent way too much on Gauntlet 2 and Rampage. That 'add another quarter to continue' thing was murder on the wallet.

President Trump just referenced Title 18, Chapter 115, Section 2387, drawing attention to serious federal statutes—and directly addressed Commander Kirk Lippold (U.S. Navy).

The law is clear. Violations carry severe criminal penalties.

Trump’s message was unmistakable:
“Follow the law. Do your duty.”

The allegation is explosive—claims of sedition involving Sen. Mark Kelly are now being openly discussed.

This is no longer political chatter.
This is legal scrutiny.

And when the law is invoked at this level, accountability—not rhetoric—comes next.

183 Greetings from the eternal south wind of the Intermountain West. We are having a not white Christmas along with other mountains. There is a bit but not a lot at resorts nearby. I am bummed but it is Christmas and I will focus on the reason when not feeling whiney.

I don't mind window rattling south winds if snow follows. This woke me at 3am. My husband said our primroses have blooms today, which made me sad.

In the South we always got a cedar tree from our farm. In fact, my most favorite photo of our sons is bringing the tree (or trying to) near my father's lake. I keep intending to paint it for Christmas cards. I keep intending to do a lot of things. They are wicked to decorate due to sharp little needles, but we did.

My current tree is a fake but realistic 10' one with antique ornaments, ornaments collected since our '78 engagement, sterling snowflakes, crystal snowflakes (do you see a trend of what I want for Christmas yet?).

This year I added antique chandelier crystals for sparkle and pretend icicles (that I don't have hanging off the house, either...sometimes gigantic). I am getting more for next year as I like the effect (from etsy).

Love you all. Please send snow.

247 I loved having fresh, real trees at Christmas. No allergy issues, thankfully.

They'd smell so good. Each had its own character-- "turn the bare spot to the wall!" or "the branches won't hold up those heavy ones" -- so the ornament choices would vary from year to year.

Had to water frequently. Stoopid tree stands never had a large enough reservoir, so a quart or two, 3-4 times a day at first. Let it go dry *one time* and tree would turn to a crisp within days. Sad.

After removal? UGH!!! Would be vacuuming up the dropped needles for months.

Artificial trees have improved MUCH over the years. I'd still rather put on the lights myself, though. Pre-lit is *too perfect* ya know?

Well, the solstice (sol-stice, sun-still) clocked in for me at ~34.75N degrees latitude at 09:45:25 of daylight. This is 4 seconds longer than the year I was born. The Erf's axial tilt, currently on a decreasing leg of that Milankovich cycle has decreased that much since 1967.

Well, this is the shortest day of the year (for those in the Northern hemisphere), tomorrow will be the longest. What? Today is the shortest in terms of daylight, sunrise to sunset times. However, the apparent solar day, the time between successive high noons, reaches a maximum tomorrow, the 2nd at just under 30 seconds longer than 24 hours. Due to earth's tilt and eccentricity, with perihelion close to the winter solstice, the true sun's longitudinal speed is the greatest tomorrow -- thus is takes the longest for the earth to rotate enough to catch back up with it.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc.
---------

Dad's mother lived in a tiny town up in north Idaho. "Unincorporated" said the sign. Population 104(? or so). Freight train would come through twice a week-- didn't stop on Saturday nights but would just blow the horn and rumble on through.

The General Store was a short walk from her house, and about a dozen yards from the tracks. Sucked for the stock clerk when deliveries came on a rainy day, because nothing was paved 'in town'. There were 2 pumps $$$ out front of the store. Dad gassed up at grandma's-- she had her own pump by the driveway.

Creek ran past grandma's back yard. She'd set out lines in the morning, so we'd have pan-fried tiny trout for lunch. Game Warden? Nah, bro... never came around.

301 Well, the solstice (sol-stice, sun-still) clocked in for me at ~34.75N degrees latitude at 09:45:25 of daylight.

You can easily how the length of the day changes as the terminator angle changes.

I stuck to malls that spelled Town as Towne. They never had a Nordstrom or a Macy's; instead they had odd ball chains that went under years ago. Mostly likely because they were money laundering schemes for cocaine dealers. If you go to those today the open shops are run by illegal immigrants selling stuff they found at a garage sale.

Whole thing is silly IMO. Russia does not have the population to exploit the resources they already have... why would they want to put themselves in a position where they have to occupy Europe...

When the better play is to just sell to the EU.

Now, conversely, it is entirely in the EUs interest to start a war with Russia, and take the Resources Russia has in abundance, that the EU now needs.

It was bad enough when I was boarding Merchant ships looking for embargoed Arms in the Persian Gulf... at least we had some cover form the UN on that...

Here's it's orbit info page from InTheSky:
https://is.gd/bNZnLk

Click on the solar system viewer for a full screen where you can shift the view angle around and play the orbit. It came in like a bat out of hell, "hyperbolic excess velocity" of around 60 km/s. That's so fast the sun barely bends it's trajectory. Eccentricity is thus 6.1 (0 for a circle, 1 is a parabola exactly, and >1 is a hyperbola).

Launching some from earth with a short notice time to catch something like 3I/ATLAS is impossible with current rockets. You'd need something far better. Not an Epstein Drive, but something far more efficient and higher thrust than we've got now.

They do have proposals to preposition some spacecraft, probably around the orbit of Mars or better and just lay in wait for the next interstellar object to come through. There, with enough detection lead time, you could maneuver the craft to be close enough for a good flyby. Not station keeping, just close enough to get some pictures and measurements as it whips by.
