The Met-
Ernesta Drinker, Beaux’s two-year-old niece and favorite model, clutches the hand of her nurse, Mattie, whose figure is boldly cropped at the waist. The radical composition and free brushwork reflect the artist’s appreciation of paintings by Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas. Moving at her toddler’s pace across a wide expanse of polished floor, Ernesta is also a spiritual descendant of Diego Velázquez’s royal children from the seventeenth century, simultaneously dignified and vulnerable. The nurse’s hand serves as a universal symbol of protection and security, and the large expanse of her apron sets the scale for the child’s diminutive figure. This is what you call painterly. It’s intended to be viewed from 4 or 5 feet away. When you look at it close you can see the single brushstrokes of color that look like a mess but come together when viewed from a distance. No blending, re-doing paint strokes or outlining.

One thing that always fascinates me is that we live our lives in a slow, sequential fashion, but when you read/look at/watch others from the past its just all there right away. I think Trump called the new ships "battleships" because it sounds cool, but they really aren't, if you assume that a real battleship has lots of very heavy armor.
The proposed Trump-class battleship prioritizes speed and advanced missile systems over the heavy, traditional armor of WWII-era battleships, focusing on modern defenses like anti-ship missiles and lasers rather than thick steel belts, though specifics on its hull/armor are still emerging, aiming for a lighter, faster design than Iowa-class despite similar size. Shift from Traditional Armor: Unlike historical battleships with massive steel belts (like the Iowa-class's 16-inch armor), the Trump-class moves away from this doctrine, focusing less on direct gunfire protection. Emphasis on Speed & Missiles: The design emphasizes speed and advanced missile capabilities (hypersonics, nuclear cruise missiles, railguns) over brute armor, notes New Atlas and The War Zone. Lighter Hull: Despite being similar in size to the Iowa-class, these ships are expected to be significantly lighter, indicating a different construction approach than heavily armored predecessors. Why, oh why, would they not go nuclear?
The propulsion system for the future Trump-class battleship is currently a point of discussion, with different reports suggesting two potential systems: Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) or a combined gas turbine and diesel arrangement. Potential Propulsion Systems Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP): This system, mentioned in some Navy data, uses a central electrical grid powered by multiple generators (sources vary on the primary power source) to drive electric motors for propulsion, as well as power the ship's advanced weapons and sensors. This design is similar to that initially planned for the Zumwalt-class destroyers. Combined Gas Turbine and Diesel: Other reports describe a more conventional arrangement using gas turbines for high speeds and diesel generators for more economical cruising and standard power needs (1 of 2) Posted by: Archimedes at December 23, 2025 10:20 AM (Riz8t) 198

Regardless of the specific power source, the propulsion system will need to generate a massive amount of electricity to support the ship's advanced systems, including:
High-energy weapons: The ships are intended to be equipped with directed-energy systems (lasers) and an electromagnetic railgun, both of which require substantial electrical power. Advanced sensors: The AN/SPY-6 radar and SEWIP Block III electronic warfare suites are energy-intensive systems that require significant power. Speed: The design goal is a top speed in excess of 30 knots. The final propulsion choice will likely depend on which system best balances the need for high power output, range, and efficiency (2 of 2) Posted by: Archimedes at December 23, 2025 10:21 AM (Riz8t) 200

Combined Gas Turbine and Diesel: Other reports describe a more conventional arrangement using gas turbines for high speeds and diesel generators for more economical cruising and standard power needs (1 of 2) Posted by: Archimedes at December 23, 2025 10:20 AM (Riz8t) ========================= I don't think you understand the full power of unicorn farts. Even other former nukes at my job didn’t even know we used to have nuke cruisers Then there were a couple of “Oh, Fuck” moments (USS Stark & USS Cole) that revealed the risks of damage to the nuclear core in an attack. Especially elevated risks due to the role this class of ship is tasked with. I’m not a real fan of the gas turbines, amazing just how much fuel one of those can go through. It's weird. Almost like the argument that millions of low-educated foreigners juicing GDP is actually a lie. Posted by: TheJamesMadison ====== Green policies are job and GDP killers. Illegals, visa immigrants lumped under H1B, and low skill workers depress native wages, raise inflation of key goods like food, rent, etc. And protective tariffs, as they normally do, spur domestic investment and manufacturing. The left always ignores basic economic realities in favor of ideology. Subsidize something like illegal immigrants, you get more of it, tax something, you get less of it, green Nude Eels never work other than to enrich some at the expense of impoverishing the vast populace, and government should not be counted as part of the GDP because there is no such thing as government 'investment', only costs to the domestic economy where money is taken from taxpayers could have been used elsewhere for better effect (Bastiat's Broken Window thesis extended). Doing this keeps the production line hot and doesn't create a delay for design and development. Failure of the bullet train should be sufficient to sink anyone's chances at winning the presidency. But we live in a strange timeline where maximum incompetence and corruption gets rewarded.
Posted by: Chuck Martel ===== Electoral fraud, any cheat by mail state should be assumed to have fraudulent elections--no other nation uses such as a primary election method. The rest of it is that corrupt electorates figure if they let the bigwigs tax the 'rich' for their payout, then some of that corruption will trickle down to the welfare class. 344 337 So gdp is spectacular and consumer confidence is down! I'll never understand our economy. Why isn't the market having a boffo day.
Posted by: neverenoughcaffeine at December 23, 2025 10:55 AM (2NHgQ) ------ Market is fickle and the big trading houses exert influence. Just because "the market" is up or down may or may not have any relevance to your porfolio. As I started the second sentence of this post text was recieved of my sale, at my price, of a stock that's been up for more than three months. My biggest losses came from a folio managed by Vanguard. Their porfolios have ~200/500 stocks. Never a good move. They make money with your money. One year, 4/100 girls born in the US were named Jennifer.
My girlfriend had so many friends of that name, that they had to go with Jen, Jenny, Jenna, Jennifer, and often they absolutely had to include their last names. Posted by: t-bird at December 23, 2025 11:08 AM (6LzyB) 379

and government should not be counted as part of the GDP because there is no such thing as government 'investment', only costs to the domestic economy where money is taken from taxpayers could have been used elsewhere for better effect
For every public bureaucrat, you have armies of private industry lawyers, controllers and compliance officers, their staff, their "desk costs" and the silencing effect on innovation. Then there is the implementation attempting to do a thing to get around the regulations, or abiding by them and forced to do things that are counter-productive or totally unwanted. I know of several potentially lucrative projects that were smothered in the cradle because regulatory and tax implications. OTOH, I know of many wasteful projects that came about as a result of government skewing the market and providing large subsidies and regulatory favoritism - these projects were really façades for wasteful rent seeking. We can easily make a list. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at December 23, 2025 11:10 AM (pUU4E) 382

President Donald Trump on Monday defended his administration’s plan to offer 600,000 visas to Chinese students — a move that has drawn criticism from within conservative circles.
Fox News’ Laura Ingraham pressed Trump during an interview on "The Ingraham Angle," questioning how the proposal was "pro-MAGA" if it crowded out spots for American students and whether universities were "getting rich" from Chinese money. Trump argued that foreign students — particularly from China — are vital to keeping U.S. universities financially stable, adding that cutting the number of Chinese students in half would cripple the system. — As America First as it gets.
