Title: Saint Anthony the Abbot in the Wilderness Artist: Osservanza Master (Italian, Siena, active second quarter 15th century) Date: ca. 1435 Medium: Tempera and gold on wood Dimensions: Overall: 18 3/4 × 13 5/8 in. (47.6 × 34.6 cm) Posted by: rhennigantx at December 22, 2025 09:32 AM (gbOdA) 12

Posted by: Boss Moss at December 22, 2025 09:32 AM (kT/XV) 13
This panel is part of a cycle of scenes depicting the life of the hermit Saint Anthony Abbot. The painter's penchant for original and descriptive narrative detail appears in the treatment of the desert landscape and its fauna (symbols of the saint's temptations) beneath the luminous sky at dusk. A pot of gold in the lower left corner (which has been scraped away) symbolized the seductive worldly goods that the stalwart saint resists. The series of eight panels were likely arranged vertically, surrounding a central painted or sculpted image of Saint Anthony.

The painting "Saint Anthony the Abbot in the Wilderness" by the Osservanza Master depicts Saint Anthony resisting temptation, symbolized by a pot of gold that has been scraped away. It illustrates his struggle against worldly desires and highlights his faith as he finds solace in the church in the background, representing spiritual wealth over materialism.
The painting is characterized by its use of tempera and gold on panel, typical of 15th-century Italian art. The figures are small in relation to the canvas, emphasizing their narrative importance. The flatness of the composition and the winding path create a sense of depth, guiding the viewer's eye through the scene. covenantarthistory.blogspot.com Posted by: redridinghood at December 22, 2025 09:35 AM (NpAcC) 30

"Research in 2010 by Maria Falcone in Siena has revealed the name of the Master to be Sano di Pietro. Falcone found a document about an altarpiece by the “Master of Osservanza” for a church in Asciano, just outside Siena, which was actually under the bishopric of Arezzo. The priest of the church in Asciano did not pay the painter and therefore the city government of Siena had to make an appeal to the bishop in Arezzo to force the priest from his district to pay the artist. The artist's name was included on the document as Sano di Pietro."

I'm shocked this painting is from the 1400s. The style of the landscape makes me think of mid-20th century: minimalist and rather abstract. Then you get to the figure of Saint Anthony. The faces isn't wooden as I've seen in other art from that period. It shows emotion, contemplation. His posture reinforces that sense. Everything is still and stark except for his figure. The only points of brilliant color are the halo and his staff making a frame for his face and hands. Knowing the story of Anthony's temptation, which the viewers likely did, would make the image even more effective.

The pigments and media that fix them in place can deteriorate over time, especially in hot, humid conditions. Six centuries is a long time and I suspect that a section of a painting that was once blue can turn to mud if the work is exposed to the elements.

I saw a comment over the weekend that Ticket Carlson attacked the family of the Furry English Cigarette who murdered Charlie Kirk for turning him in, but I can't find anything about it online. Anybody know what he said?
Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at December 22, 2025 08:38 AM Via Grok: Over the December 20-21 weekend, Tucker Carlson spoke at Turning Point USA's (TPUSA) AmericaFest event in Phoenix, Arizona — an organization founded by Kirk. During his speech, Carlson addressed a hypothetical scenario involving a family member committing murder, which many interpreted as an implicit criticism of Robinson's family for turning him in. Here's the key excerpt from his remarks, based on video and eyewitness accounts shared widely on X: "If my brother went on a drug-induced murder spree, I'd defend him. I'd say, 'That's my brother, I love him.' I wouldn't condemn him. I'd try to get him out of the country if I could. Family loyalty comes first." The statement drew backlash online for its timing and venue, with commenters noting the insensitivity given that Robinson's father had turned him in just months after Kirk's killing. I think it's important that we all have and are able to express our opinions, and say the things that are on our minds, and I think it's important that I'm able to just tune out the idiots that I don't want to listen to. Saint Anthony the Abbot in the Wilderness
Osservanza Master Italian ca. 1435 Saint Anthony the Abbot (c. 251–356 AD) was an Egyptian hermit, considered the Father of Monasticism, who went into the desert after hearing hearing Jesus' words in the Gospel about selling possessions to follow Him, dedicating his life to prayer, asceticism, and temptations, becoming a legendary figure in Christian history known for his radical faith and spiritual battles, inspiring countless others into the wilderness. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 956 - In part, "This panel is the sixth in a series of eight that includes Saint Anthony at Mass (Gemäldegalerie, SMPK, Berlin); Saint Anthony Distributing His Wealth and Saint Anthony Blessed by an Old Hermit (both National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.); Saint Anthony Tempted by the Devil in the Guise of a Woman and Saint Anthony Beaten by Devils (both Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven); and Journey and Meeting of Saint Anthony with Saint Paul the Hermit and Funeral of Saint Anthony (both National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)." --- New testament vs. Old testament art. Given the life, I thought the rabbit was the gold. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at December 22, 2025 11:00 AM (NFX2v) 309
You were the first person I thought about when I heard about the outage. Glad you're OK.

And, Bannon was not Trump's "Chief Strategist". That is a construction that Bannon put on himself.

No, it is exactly where we are.
Posted by: runner at December 22, 2025 10:56 AM (g47mK) Is the "we" in the room with us right now? Or are you reading that specifically from Lizzy's words? I didn't, which suggests you are bring much of that to the conversations, which is why I classify that as out of left field. So if you stipulate that it's hyperbolic, ask yourself why he's making such a statement at an event put on by TPUSA a couple months after its founder was assassinated....
Posted by: ballistic at December 22, 2025 10:59 AM (5aZAZ) He did it specifically because Ben Shapiro named him, as someone Megan Kelly should denounce and deplatform. And many people were calling for TPUSA to deplatform him, to not let him speak at the event, even though Charlie Kirk specifically told Tucker to go hard, to not go easy on his critics. This is a fight between the Israel lobby and Tucker (and Candace). Cucker is a coward, he never will go and point a finger the Big Zionist Trump.

Shapiro has a speaking platform just like a lot of talking heads and that's the only difference between them and a blog and blog commentators. What aggravates me is the undeserved influence all of these talking heads have and the ability to reach useful idiots. I understand that's the way it's been forever though. Just had a lovely experience . Was over at the church with FenSpouse decorating for Christmas . Some foolish person ( raising my hand) forgot the make sure that the door was completely locked and a young couple came in. They are visiting our town for the holiday and were sightseeing They have family or friends here but live in Panama. They sound like the might be free Eastern Europeanoriginally. I think they might be RC since those churches are open for much of the day for Mass and prayer. Anyway, I did invite them back to our carol and candlelight service.
And thanks , God , that nobody broke in overnight to take anything from us. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 22, 2025 11:06 AM (m6Eem) 319
Apt piece of art. The church is walking a road lined with crucifixions, toward Armageddon city.
