“Ford to convert EV battery plants to make battery storage for data centers” [Elektrek – 12/15/2025] Ford is jumping into the battery energy storage business, betting that booming demand from data centers and the electric grid can absorb the EV battery capacity it says it’s not using. To achieve this, Ford plans to repurpose its existing EV battery manufacturing capacity in Glendale, Kentucky, into a dedicated hub for manufacturing battery energy storage systems. Ford says it will invest about $2 billion over the next two years to scale the new business.Ford getting involved in battery storage systems makes as much sense as when Exxon decided to manufacture and sell office machinery. But I understand in part why Ford is doing this. Specifically, without the BESS announcement, Ford would have to own up to another multi-billion-dollar write-off for the zombie Kentucky battery plant. Plus, with this BESS project, Bill Ford can still feel proud that the company is engaging in a form of green, save-the-world posturing. For those of us Tennessee taxpayers who kicked in almost a billion dollars toward Ford’s new electric truck plant (“Blue Oval City”

Kentucky was also in on the grift.
GLENDALE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky invested $250 million in taxpayer money to bring BlueOval SK to the state. This week, every worker at the Glendale electric vehicle battery plant was laid off.. The shutdown affects all 1,600 employees at the facility and comes after a series of delays, including the decision never to open a second plant known as “Kentucky 2.” The layoffs also come just four months after production began at Kentucky 1. Honda, at one point, declared they were going ALL EV by 2035 or some such, I believe.
Posted by: Sponge ======= I think the flat Japanese economy and Honda having to rely on foreign markets like Europe and US drove that comment. Toyota has the most successful hybrid program which satisfies most of the market that EV's would plus eliminating range anxiety which EVs can't. Honda and the rest like Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, etc. simply did not have the ability to go toe to toe in hybrids so they pivoted toward full EV planning. The ironic thing is that Ford had probably the best of the dwinding Big Three in hybrid tech and threw it away to go after the EV market. Posted by: whig at December 19, 2025 11:06 AM (WDjG6) 24

You will see a lot of hybrid trucks hitting the market within two years cuz the batteries will drop in price. I always suspected the push for EVs was to grow the manufacturing base of batteries. They are the number one cost driver for hybrid vehicles. I would put money on a full sized hybrid pickups. All tradesmen these days use battery driven hand tools. Imagine driving to the jobsite and charging up your onboard big battery (the bed of your pickup) and all the little batteries simultaneously.

So Farley was "just following orders"? Sounds like a typical, miniature, worm-like personality that seems to make up much of America now.
In 1940, the CEO of GM (then the biggest most important company in the world) got a phone call out of the blue from the president of the US. He asked the CEO to leave his top job on the planet (umm, no disastrous boondoggles on his resume) and begin organizing US industry for war production. The guy (an immigrant who had worked as a stevedore, and been a boxer) said yes, right then. No "let me get back to you", no week of reflection, no PowerPoint presentation. Just - yeah, I'll do it. Compare this story to the lurid idiocy of the Farley case (and many many others). Sad! Posted by: rhomboid at December 19, 2025 11:16 AM (U/Byj) 88

Posted by: Axeman How about peanut oil? Is that a seed oil? Posted by: Bulg at December 19, 2025 11:08 AM (77rzZ) --- It really depends on the extraction process. If they have to super-heat it, put it through a chemical process, bleach it, or something along those lines, then it's bad. You can get "expeller-pressed sunflower oil" which my understanding is that it is not nearly as bad as the chemically-extracted stuff. For plant-based oils, it's best to stick with olive, avocado (although there are no quality constraints on avocado oil) and coconut. The problem with saturated--natural--fats, is that they have a low smoke-point. I think, Gee has the highest smoke point of animal fats. Posted by: Axeman at December 19, 2025 11:17 AM (krQz2) 92

I'm actually intrigued by this. Though a diesel engine would be better paired with the generator - but we all know how the left feels about diesel. With a properly sized generator/engine, there is enormous torque available via electric motors. So this might work. Back when the entire EV craze began to be pushed, it was well known that battery tech wasn't nearly where it needed to be for them to work, but that was ok because the demand would spur new technology and it would all work out just great.
None of the proponents paused to see the magical thinking inherent in that assumption; that something new and magical will show up just because you want it to. So lithium batteries showed up and all the cheerleaders and promoters jumped up and down and said "yes! This is all that we needed, it's all good now!" Except that they weren't that much better, and they had a host of new problems that came with them, but no one committed to the new system could afford to say the truth. So they all, for various reasons, committed to trying to ram a Big Lie down the publics throat. and now it's all falling apart. Because all lies do, eventually. The problem with the strategy on electric trucks is that it misunderstands the truck user.
The type of fellow that is forming out $70-90k on a truck needs it for the trucks abilities, hauling and towing and such. And EVs just underperform at those tasks, they aren't practical as an industrial work truck. The people that would buy electric trucks for which the truck's abilities are suitable are rural folks that need a truck bed for hauling feed, taking trash to the dump, getting a load of mulch, throw the weedeater in, etc. But those folks won't fork out $75k for a farm truck. They'll just buy an old gas truck for $5k somewhere. The power tool and garden tool industry have really done a very good job of assessing the market for battery powered tools, hence the success in those markets. But EV makers have just been stuck in some kind of ideological mindset rather than a pragmatic one. Tesla's success in the car market has been that, relative to competition, it's not egregiously overpriced for a midsize sedan. Posted by: Rural Fellow at December 19, 2025 11:18 AM (UZlJN) 98

Modern cars are a complex mix of computer, sensors, electrical system, and mechanical parts nowadays. There is a ton of bad information out there with seed oils, most of this is association, not causation. Seed oils that are cold pressed are fine, but will have a low smoke point and the taste is going to be heavy. Processed seed oils strip some nutrients but increase the smoke point and decrease the taste, which is important in baking or stir frying. Seed oils have Omega-6 in them, and there is a balance between Omega -6 and 3s we need to maintain. However, unless you are drinking the oil, which I do not recommend, using it to cook with in moderation is not going to harm you. There is a lot of seed oils in ultra processed foods - it’s the ultra processed food that is of concern in total. Avoid these.

Posted by: rhomboid Fair enough. I used to do a lot of the gunsmithing myself as you can actually fit small parts pretty well with nothing more than files and stones. Colt double action revolvers though before they went to coil spring actions in the 70's are like working on Swiss watches and had a lot of experienced Colt technicians hand fitting at the factory on key parts like the pawl and hand. From me at The American Spectator: “Banks Are Racially Profiling Mortgage Applicants - The Government Requires It”
------ [The root cause of the 2008 Financial Meltdown:] Although later weaponized by DogEater (Making NINJA Loans Great Again!), this crap started with the Clinton Administration back in 1993, announcing plans to crack down on financial institutions to uncover racial discrimination in mortgage lending The administration also made changes to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) to make mortgages more accessible to lower- and lower-middle-income families. Furthermore, they threatened to subject mortgage companies to CRA regulations if they didn't "voluntarily" increase lending to low-income borrowers and minorities, making compliance more attractive to avoid public scrutiny. HUD Secretary Fredo "The Elder" Cuomo pushed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy $2 trillion in "affordable" mortgages, effectively encouraging lenders to expand credit to minority and low-income borrowers. Banks that failed to meet CRA obligations risked having their expansion plans blocked, creating strong incentives to increase lending in minority neighborhoods. Surely this will make people worried about their immigration status show up to their court dates. /s There needs to be the ability for people to appear via video call for these things. It's outrageous that they have to turn up in person, especially in these circumstances. Well they got their first jury to support the Nazi court prosecutors. The judges dropped the ball here. As a matter of law her conviction is wrongful, and the judge should have thrown it out well before it go to the jury. Can't wait for the inevitably successful appeal. Why would they decide no on the lesser charge for concealment but convict on the greater charge that is barely any different? is this a law board? I just checked the sub name and it appears to be so. a jury heard the facts and applied it to the law and made a decision. Happens every day. If your jury is full of cult members, you are screwed, and the law doesn't seem to matter. Come meet a woman who was terrified when she saw a gun-toting dad help his wife get their baby out of the car 😂
I went to Hobby Lobby to buy a small accent table when a minivan pulled into the spot next to me. A young family stepped out, and as the father tended to their newborn, I noticed a firearm strapped to his waist. I froze with fear — especially in light of the recent shooting in Rhode Island. EV is still going pretty strong in Europe and UK. In fact, these markets have been invaded and nearly taken over by Chineseium EV cars. The Chinese effectively took over 20% of the market literally overnight, with massive spending and investment. Brands people in the USA probably never heard of. BYD, Chery (Omoda, Jaecoo), Ora, etc.
All of these brands originally partnered with Western car makers (VW, etc) to develop EV cars and tech. The Chinese stole the tech, copied the business models to the letter, and then kicked out their Western partners. Same as it ever was. Clearly the worst war-time expedient that has evolved into the biggest economic anchor around the country's neck was exempting "health insurance" coverage from income taxes.
At the time it was relatively minor as everything was different, but was the basis on which the entire superstructure of non-market irrational oligopolistic subsidized cost-shifting "health insurance" finance evolved. Many noxious wheels turning in this picture but it all started there. Companies were constrained by wage controls, labor was short, so various marginal incentives were pursued to attract bodies. LOL, no. Replacing saturated fats with PUFAs from seed oils lowers LDL and reduces CVD risk. Many many reviews have confirmed this. The biggest argument against seed oil is that it causes inflammation and oxidative stress. This isn't supported in any of the recent reviews. Reviews of seed oils among diabetic and dyslipidemic patients found seed oils improve lipid profiles, glycemic control, and reduce oxidative stress markers. @Whig and semi-literate: With BESS, the light weight of lithium isn't an advantage. It's still used because that's what exists and is best adapted for the purpose, but the primary reason to use lithium in most applications (as opposed to even regular old lead-acid batteries) is that in mobile applications the light weight of lithium is an acceptable tradeoff for the cost. Remember that in vehicle and other mobile applications, part of the energy released by the battery is used to move the battery, so you're looking at the net energy. When the use is stationary, it doesn't matter what the battery weighs, so lithium is less advantaged.

Ford has also announced that it is getting into the industrial-scale battery electric storage systems business, also knowns as “BESS.” Let me be the first to confidently predict that there will be a multi-billion-dollar write-off for Ford’s BESS distraction in coming years. They'd have probably been better off going into the BESS business from the start. Every cellular telephone site, switching center, cable TV hub, landline telephone facility etc has backup batteries. In many cases it's mandated by FCC that these sites have x number of hours of battery backup capacity, over and above their backup diesel generators. But of course, they went EV not just because they wanted to save the planet, but to chase down those sweet, sweet government subsidy dollars. "Ford getting involved in battery storage systems makes as much sense as when Exxon decided to manufacture and sell office machinery."
Actually, it's the opposite: Exxon's 1980s office venture (word processors/typewriters) flopped amid fierce competition from Xerox/IBM, costing billions. Ford is smartly repurposing EV battery plants for large-scale LFP container systems (>5MWh) to power grids/data centers—stabilizing renewables, regulating frequency, providing backup amid AI-driven demand. This booming market (Tesla's Megapacks are highly profitable) aligns perfectly with Ford's expertise. LFP is exceptionally safe: higher thermal stability, lower fire risk than alternatives, ideal for stationary use. Strategic pivot to high-margin growth. Posted by: Piper ------ I used to do big empirical studies and a lot of the statistical methods necessary for certain tasks were first pioneered in medical statistics. The problem with most studies is a) we cannot feed people Purina Human Chow switching out key ingredients for decades to get a decent fix on optimal human food, b) impossible to separate out environmental effects like air pollution, chemicals in water and food, medicines, genetics, etc., and c) cost of panel studies running for decades is enormous and you have to have a much bigger panel at first because of attrition from people dropping out of studies. We have added d) where a lot of 'answers' are simply unacceptable socially so we muddle messages (salt intake for one). We have multiplied the number of variables to the extent that generalities like moderation are about the easiest solution to very complex interactions among relevant variables. CAFE standards are based on the entire sales base of vehicles which includes everything up through standard pickups IIRC. Apparently the F-150 EV plan now is to build a truck that has a gasoline engine whose only purpose is to act as an electric generator for the battery. What is this, a comedy routine? Posted by: Gauloises and Gitanes at December 19, 2025 12:00 PM (HTCU3) Using a gasoline engine in this application is stupid. Diesel engines are much more efficient as the generator in diesel-electric systems. A diesel engine is REALLY happy at steady RPMs for power generation. Gas engines tend to be better for variable RPM use, as in cars that need quick power application. The choice of gasoline has nothing to do with performance, it has everything to do with logistics. The gasoline supply network is built out with an existing focus on the average consumer. The diesel network is built with a focus on commercial use. Posted by: Bulg at December 19, 2025 11:11 AM (77rzZ) Olives and avocados are both seeds. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 19, 2025 12:30 PM (npFr7) 452
I'm going to press x to doubt on that one.
——— Fact. Don’t take my word for it, though. Learn for yourself. A dear departed member here named Ciampano posted an excellent treatise on the subject. A book entitled The Oiling of America ; it mentions this. You may be also shocked to learn that large corporations had an outsized effect on lobbying. Corn interests and cereal for example. Read and learn. You don’t have to accept it, or agree with it. But the Cholesterol = Heart disease was not and is not without serious controversy. Peanut Oil is tasty. Doesn’t cause too much intestinal distress with me. It’s technically a legume.
Coconut oil is excellent for frying, popping corn, etc and doesn’t seem to cause gut issues either. At least with me. I would use 90 wt gear oil if it tasted OK and the price was right. Sometimes you’ll hear “use a neutral tasting oil”, this doesn’t really make any sense either. Fat is flavor, no way around it. Posted by: Common Tater at December 19, 2025 12:53 PM (Fn30I) 454
Don’t worry. I am sure free trade will be blamed for this, not Ford’s bad business decisions.

Ford's problem with EVs is that they don't know how to make them for a profit.
It's clear that the future is EV for cars and trucks. Only one company, Tesla, makes EVs at a profit. Ford hired some ex-Tesla guys and they are heading a "skunkworks" project to build EVs that can actually make a profit. Expect this to be big news when it's unveiled. I expect their first EV to be a small car, not a truck. Building an EV truck with an onboard generator isn't completely stupid. Stellantis is planning to sell a truck like that too. But IMHO it's better to have a pure ICE truck or a pure EV truck... instead of hauling a generator around, just run on gas or else put extra batteries in the truck. But since Ford can't build EVs at a profit yet, the hybrid EV truck looks good to them. Posted by: mr_jack at December 19, 2025 01:00 PM (LNPSJ) 456
If there was massive election fraud why has no believable witness come forward ? I am sure they would be quite well rewarded for exposing this?

It really depends on the extraction process. If they have to super-heat it, put it through a chemical process, bleach it, or something along those lines, then it's bad. You can get "expeller-pressed sunflower oil" which my understanding is that it is not nearly as bad as the chemically-extracted stuff. For vegetarian oils, it's best to stick with olive, avocado (although there are no quality constraints on avocado oil) and coconut. The problem with saturated--natural--fats, is that they have a low smoke-point. I think, Gee has the highest smoke point of animal fats. "Subjugation of a highly mobile society is difficult." If I was a dictator in charge of the federal goverment it would have been easier for me to inmobilize you if you drive a gas vehicle instead of an EV. Just close the refineries, blow away the pipelines and good luck fueling your vehicle. If you have an EV, there are many ways to get the energy to "fuel it" that are out of my reach. There are 132 refineries in the USA according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Meanwhile, there were as of 2022 12,538 utility-scale electric power plants in the USA as per the same source. Posted by: DominicanVoices at December 19, 2025 01:37 PM (9IJFs) 460

"Ev cars are where battery power tools were 40 years ago. Shiny, new, and totally impractical. They took hours and hours to charge, and lasted 20 minutes if you were lucky." Tell me you don't know anything about EVs without telling me that you don't know anything about EVs. It takes seconds to charge an EV. You just plug it in when you arrive at your home, office or wherever. Go on and do your business and when you come back your "tank" is full. There are even more EV "fuel" sources if you count houses with solar panels. My house can charge my car most months of the year. (I live at a northern latitude and December/January are not good months for solar production.) I think few of the people who read this blog have an oil well plus refinery in their home. This is an advantage for EVs. My car could be remotely disabled, but if I was really worried about that I could disable the cellular antenna and never hook the car up to WiFi. An EV with remote access disabled is the most dictator-safe vehicle you could get. In fact there are portable solar panels that you could carry in your EV. They would take days to recharge the car, but you totally could be off-grid and moving around from place to place. Posted by: mr_jack at December 19, 2025 01:47 PM (LNPSJ) 462

"Ford's problem with EVs is that they don't know how to make them for a profit. It's clear that the future is EV for cars and trucks. Only one company, Tesla, makes EVs at a profit." Correct. My concern with the author of this piece and others covering EVs in conservative media is their reluctance to ground opinions in facts. Claims that EVs are neither practical nor profitable must address Tesla's success: a viable business with $97.69 billion in revenue in 2024, $7.1 billion in GAAP net income, and 1.789 million vehicles delivered. Millions of Tesla vehicles are on roads globally. Tesla (and Elon Musk specifically) shares some responsibility due to limited traditional advertising of vehicles and EV benefits. As evident in comments here, much public 'knowledge' about EVs stems from persistent myths. Posted by: DominicanVoices at December 19, 2025 01:52 PM (9IJFs) 463

I have an EV as my daily driver. I hook it up to my home charger when I need to charge. It takes less time to charge than I take to sleep so overnight charging seems "instant". On long road trips I need to stop at a fast charger. The car takes a similar amount of time to charge as I would want to stop for a meal anyway. On very long road trips, like coast to coast, the charging would annoy me. But I never do that, and at least I would be saving some money vs. paying for gasoline. My longest trip was down the west coast, to visit family in California. I would totally do that trip again in my EV. When I have to rent a gasoline car, I'm always shocked again by how much worse the car is compared to my EV. To those of you who prefer gas: good for you, keep driving gas cars. However, please don't try to tell me what EVs are like. Posted by: mr_jack at December 19, 2025 01:54 PM (LNPSJ) 464

Something that I ask critics of EVs is if they ever count the numbers of cars on the side of the road when on long trips and see how many of them are EVs. I honestly can't recall ever seeing one. Not that it never happens, but not as often as regular vehicles. This is important because how often critics claims that they might get stuck on the side of the road with an empty battery. REally late to this thread and admit to not reading all of the previous comments, but...
This is something that Akio Toyoda (Chairman, BoD, Toyota) recognized when the whole EV surge began. Although Toyota (the car company) built some EV's and plugin hybrids, they really went hard on the "fully" hybrid market. This was SMART! There are advantages to direct drive electric motors to the wheels. Torque, HP, even regen braking. But for MILEAGE and REFUELING, there is NOTHING that beats an ICE. If Ford had introduced a HYBRID F150 instead of fully electric, I "might" have considered one. Instead I opted for a 5.0L V8 (and even considered their 6.2L). Only IDIOTS buy fully electric EVs!!!! -SLV Posted by: Shy Lurking Voter at December 19, 2025 06:22 PM (e/Osv) 468
Ford drops thille EV fiasco. Don't worry, they are still stuck on stupid. Hey look!! Ford brought back the Ranger pickup!! Hell, they just manufactured a almost full size pickup. Ford ignored the popularity of the original Ranger, it was small, fuel efficient, still had a cargo compartment that could haul a few things. And on top of that, people loved it. There are still hundreds for thousand still on the road. The marketing/engineering departments along with the senior department heads were sure they new more than the buying public. I'm always thanking my lucky stars that I dumped Ford stock before this latest ignorant decission.

Barack Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, gave Ford $5.9 Billion to retool its manufacturing for EVs. Joe Biden gave Ford a $9.2 Billion loan in 2023 and a $1.7 Billion grant in 2024.
Separately, Biden's DOE, aka Jenny Granholm, gave PG&E $15 Billion in 11/24 just for keeping electricity prices high. Clearly, Ford made a bad trade. Posted by: wferrin at December 19, 2025 08:12 PM (lCdHU) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.087 seconds. |
