Top Story

  • Micron says the memory shortage will get worse before it gets better, and also that it won't get better if they have anything to say about it. (Tom's Hardware)

Micron has two factories under construction in Idaho due to come on line in 2027, and another planned in New York to be operational in 2030.

Even with those three new factories churning out chips they only expect to meet half to two thirds of demand.

In the meantime, though, the company posted a revenue increase of 57% over last year, so they don't really care about you and your money, as indicated by them shutting down their Crucial consumer brand after nearly 30 years.

  • And the second of my two new mini-PCs arrived today. I set up the first one last night - just plugged it in, turned it on, lied and told Windows I didn't have internet, and it works. It's pretty fast too, with none of the lag I get with my laptop.

Partly because the CPU is nearly twice as fast as the one in my laptop, partly because it's a clean install of Windows and doesn't have about 200 different applications installed yet. I'll fix that.

It really does have 64GB of RAM. 64GB of Crucial RAM, apparently, which is now a collectors item.

It's available for sale now on Minisforum's US store, but the price is about 70% higher than in Australia even after a 20% discount, so it's no bargain.

Update: Unnamed computer #2 is plugged in and working.

18 I guess $159 for a 1TB and$249 for a 2TB version of that Corsair PCIe 5 SSD isn't a bad deal these days compared to the rest of the market.

If my motherboard even had a PCIe 5 M.2 slot I'd consider it.
Unfortunately mine only has one PCIe 4 slot and the rest are version 3.

So no go here until I get a new motherboard... around 2030 by the looks of things.

26 California, Washington State, and Oregon are about to achieve their fossil fuel-free utopia because Phillips, Chevron, and Valero are shutting down refineries in California. This will reduce gasoline output by at least 20%.

Phillips pulling out of California has a knock-on effect in Washington state that's causing their Ferndale refinery to be shut down. This has a further knock-on effect because Oregon has no refineries and gets all its gasoline out of Washington State.

All of this is self-inflicted by stupidity in the state governments with regulations and hostile government environments that have made it impossible for these companies to operate. They wanted feudal states they got them. Worse is there's no easy way to replace that gasoline shortage from other sources domestically. They will be forced to buy it from China, India and Saudi Arabia and then have to ship it to the United States.

The prediction is gasoline prices in those three states will hit at least $8 a gallon by mid 2026 and only go up from there. Of course shortages will be part of the deal.

A couple of good videos discussing this situation.

This is DDR4 not, 5:

G.SKILL Trident Z Neo Series DDR4 RAM (XMP) 64GB (2x32GB) 3600MT/s CL18-22-22-42

Granted that's a RGB version so it's a little more, but that kit is going for - $409.99

Another G.Skill Ripjaws kit, without the RGB - $379.99

That's more than I paid for my CPU last year this time.

52 Evening and morning, all. It it really Thor's Day already? Only a week until Christmas? The holiday, the Big Day, used to take *forever* to get here after Thanksgiving. Now the four weeks flash by, faster with every decade. Is it because the processing power of your brain improves (well, I *hope* it does) as you grow up? Or is it, as someone suggested, that a day or a month is a much larger proportion of your life when you are ten than it is when you are sixty?

Maybe both. Lemme have my coffee.

The one Pixy linked to has two M.2 slots so you can add a second drive.

The second M.2 drive slot is also used to the Occulink port, though, as it slots in there.

But if you don't need to use an external GPU then you don't need that Occulink port and can just remove it and keep it if you ever need it.

Git is a distributed version control software system that is capable of managing versions of source code or data. It is often used to control source code by programmers who are developing software collaboratively.

In my case, the situation was not helped by a 63-pound Borzoi kicking me while stretching out to take over much of my side of the bed.

92 There's an old French phrase, "ci-git," which apparently means "here lies" -- the translation into French of "hic jacet." Steinbeck uses it in Travels with Charley to refer to someone he calls "Monsieur Ci-Git."

98 Any advice for a kid just graduated from a great school with a CS degree who is finding it really tough to find work?

Cyber security companies are still growing. If your kid is at all interested in the field tell them to start self educating, do CTFs online research and learn.

MegaRoy used to do the zoomies across the bed when he was maybe younger than two. He's just too damned big to be effective at the parkor aspects of that. He'll run back and forth through the house breaking traction on the turns as we have hardwood floors.

Monster sounds like a damned pony galloping through when he does that. Sadly, he's 13 this year and slowing down at an alarming rate. Now it's a kinda high trot sometimes. When he wants midnight pets, it feels like copd standing with four fuzzy paws on my chest.

103 Lily the corgi is 7 years old, a 20-pound muscular sausage, not an ounce of fat, and she gets me up each day, pre-dawn, to be let out and then fed. Her technique is to pounce on my head, chest, shoulder, whatever, and keep it up until I roll out. Paws, claws, and nose in my face. There's no saying no.

106 It's typically very dark in our rural little town. After 70 mile per hour winds yesterday 90% of the area is without electricity. Right now it's incredibly dark. We have a generator, an early Christmas gift from Mr. nec and it's been running for hours. So many others don't have our luck and are in the dark and without heat and water. There isn't a water system and wells are used. This is the second high wind damage in a week and they are predicting another round late today of high winds above 5000 ft.

110 Evening and morning, all.

111 mornin yall. Another illegal truck driver has killed someone and THEN THEY LET HIM OUT. This guy came in illegally in 2023 and got a commercial license in California. Killed a father of two. People mourning the Reiners should remember that this is the kind of thing they did to our country. Will there be days of stories about the family who lost their father? No, because commie leftist Hollywood assholes are more important.

Reading the comments on that page and I suddenly realize it's just like here.

Labour vs. Liberals (Ds vs Rs) and the Labour supporters all have their heads in the sand complaining that Frydenberg is making an overtly political terrorist act political by condemning Albanese for being completely AWOL along with a complete lack of spine.

Then the rest of the comments are mostly whataboutism and the blame game.
