22 Re : Commodore 64 -

I'm never sure what the point of retro is sometimes. I love a bit of nostalgia, especially retro computing as someone who rode the wave of new home computing as a kid, but I'm not sure what the point of this is.

Why create hardware to run things that you can run on a free emulator? I don't think people want to choose playing 8 bit games for anything other than the nostalgia factor. I don't think there would be much interest in an equivalent 8 bit game that runs on an xbox.

Posted by: Political Mcguffin at December 17, 2025 04:26 AM (8x4B6)

23 My first computer was a C64. Disk drive, printer and modem (300 bit). I tried the emulator and didn't really enjoy it. It was fun for about an hour, and that was it.

Posted by: colin at December 17, 2025 04:38 AM (wlQdF)

24 I think some of the love for things like the Commodore 64 is less nostalgia for the technology but instead nostalgia for something I was really good at when I was young.

25 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 27 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high somewhere in the low 40s predicted. It is supposed to rain on Friday, which I hope will wash away the snow still on the ground.

The usual 3 hours of work ahead.

Took a quick look at the stories Ace posted yesterday. I see the impotent mouth-flapping from the usual suspects in lieu of action. As I live in Maskachusetts, my vote has already been stolen and I have no representation in DC, so midterm 'voting' would be a useless enterprise anyway, but even if it weren't, I see absolutely no reason to vote GOP.

32 Evening and morning on this Woden's Day to you late toilers and insomaniacals! I'm among the latter group. For some reason I snapped awake about 3:20, out of a dream that did not seem like a dream about Miss Linda coming over, moving around in my living room without turning on a light, then sliding into my bathroom for a shower -- still without turning on a light. I could have sworn I was awake for that, but I guess not. Weirdness indeed.

Oh, pish. No one in the White House is saying "we're all gonna be fired". 100% certain that's a fabricated quote.

What did they accomplish? They got the newsfaces talking about Literally Nothing again. They disseminated the message that "Yes, yes indeed, we are Coming For You". I'm not overly fussed about any of that.

45 The latest goofbally-ness from Da Swamp: The city is talking about erecting a *permanent* gate at the entrance to Bourbon St., where the terror attack took place this past January 1. "18 permanent swing gates to be installed along Bourbon Street from Canal to St. Ann streets" -- which is nearly half the length of the thoroughfare.

I've said for years the city, which for decades has been frantically catering to tourists instead of locals, was going to erect a big shiny gate at that point and charge people to enter. Looks like they've found an excuse to do it.

it's all so frustrating. Of course we want Our Team to look like the protagonist in a good movie, never making a misstep, always looking like a badass, always being one step ahead of the Bad Guys. But that isn't possible without everything being scripted and workshopped to death and going through twenty takes and copious editing. In reality we just have a bunch of people we can only hope don't want us quite as dead as the mutants they're up against, who explicitly and vociferously want us dead. So I'm more or less at the point where if a story is not about an actual story, and entirely about What I'm Supposed To Feel About What We Say That Your Guy Said, I assume that the people pushing the Feels are manipulative scumbags and I should probably, to be safe, feel the opposite.

It went undetected for 5 months and the only reason they knew about it was a customer inquired about unusual activity in his or her account.

Undisclosed in the article is whether or not North Korea smugly noted in their propaganda that something like this could never happen there.

58 I think part of it at least fits in with the growing "meta" of demonstrating almost Socratically that all these people are lying to us about everything and have been for years.

It started with the judo-flip of their term "Fake News", which Trump seized on like a starving wolf wandered into the meat section of the local grocery store.

We've had a slew of lawsuits, successful or not, forcing various newsface agencies to admit publicly and officially that their pants are, indeed, combustible.

Latest one is the BBC fiasco of slobberknockingly disingenuous editing concerning The Thing We Were All Required To Care About for a solid half of a decade.

I have to imagine this interview was just another little combat patrol on this very same front.

Telling everyone that these people are liars gets you nowhere. Showing everyone, maybe, might.

62 If you don't want a SmartTV it's getting more and more difficult to find a TV without the internet connection.

However, if you're looking for a smaller size, you can buy computer monitors without internet connections and use one of those instead. They are usually topping out at 32" but you can get some up to 37".

A TV manufacturer could probably make decent sales if they sold several 'dumb' models these days. If somebody wants to add streaming to it they could always add a streaming box, but you're opening yourself up to the same privacy problems with those.

65 In a perverse kind of way, right now is the perfect time to be destabilizing and dismantling the Newsface Industrial Complex. They've just spent a solid decade or more firing everyone who knows how to psy-op, and hiring a bunch of theater kids who are too obsessed with their own crotches to know how to even write in complete sentences. You'd have never busted the Palace Guard of the Krankheit era just by mocking them. Hell, thirty years ago Bernie Goldberg started to gently, politely insinuate that maybe the NIC wasn't quite as objective as they made out, and they crucified the poor bastard.

Now? It's pretty much the conventional wisdom amongst people who aren't network or cable news addicts that the Newsfaces' shit is all retarded and they do, actually, kinda talk like fags.

HE STEPPED IN TO PROTECT A LITTLE GIRL

27-year-old Dan Elkayam from France was killed in the Sydney terror attack.

Dan was a young French Jewish engineer from Le Bourget.

Dan loved playing soccer and was proud to represent France and the Jewish community at the 2022 Maccabiah International Tournament.

On the first night of Hanukkah, like so many young Jews far from home, he came to bond with his people at the Chanukkah Menorah lighting.

As the bullets began flying, Dan rushed to protect a little girl with his own body and succumbed to the terrorists' bullets.

May his memory be a blessing.

I installed my first modem in my 8088 Compuadd PC in '89 or so, to upload my COBOL programs to the school mainframe -- which would compile it and print out the result. Then the next day at work, I'd pick up the printout and see just how many errors I'd made. Fortunately, when you fixed one error in COBOL, that often cleared up four others.

Could be that browsers have added something in updates that screwed up Responsive Design site loading.

As in; it was working fine for years, and then the developers did something that screwed up everything down the line.

153 I've gotten really hard-line on this, lately, because I enjoy ham radio, which is apparently so pointless and fucked-up that some people feel perfectly okay about shitting on it and think that that is funny.

Does not seem pointless at all to me

159 Apropos of the C64, my current fascination is the Quark Linux SOC I picked up, inside of its 3d printed case it measures 1.5x1.75x.75 inches has a oled monitor, USB, WiFi, Bluetooth and has enough horsepower to emulate a c64 and serve the games on webpage.

Picked it up for 50 bucks and it’s a blast.

I'm a little bent out of shape because of a few commenters (don't know, consciously avoided knowing who) who very openly feel ... differently.

I know most everyone here is not like that, but once in a while it busts loose inside me ... and yes, I was just thinking how, in its way, that's like yelling back at a troll - you're letting them know that they actually scored a touch. stupid.

173 Watching the pressers following all of these tragedies, I'm struck by how totally incompetent the "leadership" is. It seems like we used to install people who were both talented and competent. Now we have women and men who have absolutely no achievements in life but are really, REALLY proud of their gender studies degree. But they can deflect, deny and blame others with great confidence (with an assist from the propaganda press).
